[Cabot] Why Kevin Stefanski calling plays over Tommy Rees is smart, and why the Browns should also hire a quarterbacks coach

  1. Seems like another “Why the Browns should trade for Cooper, Jeudy, Moore etc.” story by MKC.

Mentions specifically Ashton Grant who’s had a role in coaching QBs the past two seasons.

“One obvious choice would be Ashton Grant, who spent 2023 and 2024 as the Browns assistant quarterbacks coach. The quarterbacks respond well to Grant, and he appears ready for the job as he heads into his sixth season with the Browns.”

Would make sense to promote him if he’s done well

  2. Every article she writes should just be titled “Why the Browns continue to be the smartest team in the NFL” by Mary Kay Hoynsie

  3. Has the FO/ownership ever provided a reason they didn’t hire a quarterbacks coach? Clearly money is not the issue

  4. The answer – Because, like 2024, when the Desean Watson lead offense is a dumpster fire again, the play calling can be “handed over” to Tommy Rees and we’ll have our new fall guy for why the offense was so bad in 2025 and Stefanski’s hands are clean.

  5. It’s smart because Stefanski is really on the hook this year, so he should be given full control to perform or fail.

  6. I think it’s been pretty evident that Stefanski’s offense/play calling has not been the biggest problem with the offense. Turns out Watson is pretty fuckin awful no matter what offense we try.

  7. I’m actually shocked that we didn’t have a QB coach. I never thought to check, I just assumed it was an industry standard across every team in the NFL.

  8. At this point, maybe we should have a head qb coach, run qb coordinator, pass qb coordinator, and a handful of qb analysts.

  9. As long as we don’t have an abnormal amount of pre snap penalties I don’t give a shit who is calling the plays. Tommy and Kevin will be working on the plays in the offseason and the order in which they come out just comes down to situational football knowledge which I’m confident Kevin has and I would assume Tommy would as well. The only reason I was ready for Kevin to give it up this year was all the miscommunication issues we were having.
