Sources: What I’m Hearing About Pete Alonso, Blue Jays, Mets (Trade for Torkelson?)

“What I’m hearing” and then it’s just links to tweets. Damn boss I’m hearing the same thing!
Boras now has to use another dumb FO to gain leverage. Maybe they fall for it and overpay the oaf.
The article linked by OP is from Pat Ragazzo, that was written yesterday.
Ragazzo’s article today, has the following interesting tidbits:
“Free agent first baseman Pete Alonso and his camp met with the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, as multiple sources told Mets On SI.
Alonso has been in talks with the Toronto Blue Jays but nothing was close there as of Friday afternoon.”
“As for the Mets, the door appears to be closed with Alonso, their homegrown franchise star, right now. That doesn’t mean things can’t change on that front, but since last week nothing has changed: Alonso is still unlikely to return to Queens.”
“As for external options, one first base fit the Mets are considering is a trade for former No. 1 overall draft pick Spencer Torkelson. The 25-year-old righty bat is coming off a poor 2024 campaign and there’s currently no path for him to play everyday after the Detroit Tigers signed second baseman Gleyber Torres and plan to move Colt Keith to first base.”
I love Pete but Torkelson is intriguing. He’s obviously not the premier player we need in the middle of the lineup, but he’s young, a former #1 pick, and hit 31 HR in 2023 and has the talent to be a premier player. There’s lots of upside here. If he works out it could be an amazing coup if he goes on to have a Dansby Swanson change of career.

Sports Illustrated is garbage
Shoutout to Pat Ragazzo for prompting ChatGPT to write a summary of two days of Heyman articles and Martino tweets
Not sure how I feel about Ragazzo as a source. Robert Murray said on his live show today he was unable to confirm Pete’s supposed meeting in LA.
I know he was the first to tie us to Griffin Canning (and honestly his reporting on that was similar to how he dropped our interest in Scherzer earlier today, so wouldn’t be totally shocked if something materializes there), but it seems like nobody truly knows what’s going on with Pete. It was just a little over 24 hours ago Martino said he and the Jays were at the 10 yard line lol.
Nothing new in this article, just a collation of yesterday’s news.
As far as trading for Torkelson goes, it’s an interesting proposition although one I’m pretty mixed on. It’s hard not to get excited about his college results and his scouting report, but his hit tool has lagged badly against MLB-caliber and even AAA-caliber pitching. He’s still young so I wouldn’t count him out, but he looks a lot more like “store brand Jay Bruce at best” to me than “Pete Alonso’s successor” so far and nearly 1.5k major league plate appearances isn’t a trivial sample size to struggle in.
Stearns must have full support of Cohen on this the way he’s played it.
Soto will be 1B
Based on the Santander contract, I can’t imaging they’d pay more than the Mets current offer.
Aren’t pitchers and catchers reporting in like two weeks? Regardless of Alonso coming back or not, what’s going on?
Do we have a set infield other than him? Or is it all in the balance if we get Pete back?
Ugh 😑 can’t wait for opening day!!
Pete likely going into spring unemployed
Let me get this straight. There are Mets fans here “intrigued” by Torkelson, while also saying that we shouldn’t pay Pete because he will “only” be a 2.5 WAR guy. Spencer Torkelsons career WAR in 3 seasons (361 Games) is a NEGATIVE .3. His Career OPS + is a 94. Pete Alonso in his worst year was a 123. The ONLY reason Torkelson is even in the major leagues still is he was drafted #1 in 2020. Absolutely zero chance the Mets ever do this
Torkelson is absolute trash. I believe this is all just a dance to get Pete back.
When Pete inevitably doesn’t get the contract he wants and signs like a 2 year with an opt out… I kind of have the feeling he’ll have a career year or near it because he’ll probably try to lose the dad bod. Become more mobile. And try and get that contract next season.
But then again given how he’s managed to screw this up for himself he’s probably too stupid to actually make those changes on his end.
I’d take Tork. New scene might be what he needs
Torkelson still has an option. Whether or not we get Pete I see no downside to adding Torkelson to the roster
