Utah Hockey BLOCKED from Copyrighted Yeti name?

The Utah Hockey Club is having issues getting the trademark for its preferred permanent name.

It’s no secret that “Yetis” or “Yeti” has long been the favorite to replace the team’s temporary “Hockey Club” moniker — with everyone from management and players hinting at it as early as last summer.

But there could be a snag. Namely, YETI is already a pretty big brand.

Earlier this month, the trademark for “Utah Yetis” was refused by the United States Patent and Trademark Office due to a “likelihood of confusion”

“Trademark Act Section 2(d) bars registration of an applied-for mark that is so similar to a registered mark that it is likely consumers would be confused, mistaken, or deceived as to the commercial source of the goods and/or services of the parties,” a non-final action issued on Jan. 9 said.

  4. Feels like the simple solution is to have yeti be the company make any cups that the the hockey club produces. Unless there is an NHL deal for producing cups which is possible but something I’m unaware of.

  5. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. It seems to me Yeti could be beneficial to the HC and to the drinkware company, with the HC even selling their drinkware products, but what do I know! I'm actually Ok with the Utah Hockey Club moniker. Maybe have a Yeti as a mascot. But then I suppose that could get a cease and desist order like the old Salt Lake Buzz baseball team being sued by Georgia Tech whose mascot is a yellow jacket named Buzz! I still say go back to local history and name the team "The Golden Eagles". The golden eagle is native to Utah and is the state bird of prey!

  7. I wasn’t aware that the hockey club was going to put a picture of a cooler on their jerseys. This is stupid, it would be free advertising for both entities.

  16. Yeti is a word that can't be reserved in trademark. Simailar to coke. The trademark that Yeti has cannot be infringed upon, but the word itself is NOT a trademark. If you ask people what is a yeti they would probably tell you that a yeti is a bigfoot from the Himalaya Mountains, not a cooler or thermos.

    If "Utah" can't be trademarked and the word Yeti is the issue, then how do the LA Kings/Sac Kings not have conflicts? New York Jets/ Winnipeg Jets? Both of those teams have the same "product" name if the location can't be trademarked. This same argument was used to not go with Raptors, yet other pro franchises do it without issue.

    Seems like the trademark office is being difficult intentionally. Venom is an energy drink brand that's barely hanging on anymore. Blizzard im guessing the game dev company? Neither of those 2 would have cross over in merchandise sold. I doubt many stores carry Venom energy drink beanies or Blizzard Entertainment t-shirts.

  30. Now that this has likely been shot down thanks to the YETI drinkware/cooler company, I've been seeing Mammoth as another popular name so that would be cool if considered…

    In relation to another team of Utah's though, why on earth did the Jazz when they relocated from New Orleans to Salt Lake City opt to just keep that name? Nothing about about Utah screams jazz to me!

  32. So then shouldnt the NHL copyright block Stanley Cups… i always found that one weird, and thought either collab and make a Stanley Cup Stanley Cup or block them from using the name.
