Tigers confirmed to have a 5+ year offer on the table for Bregman. The Astros’ standing offer of 6 years/$156 million is described as “unlikely to get the deal done”.
I wish we had more cold, hard facts…would imagine if he said his baseline is 6 years that us saying we’d only do 5 (tops) we would have fell outta competition by now, no? So are we going to be willing to match the 6 and not beat the deal and get our guy for an extra 10m over 6 years? Then that also begs the question wtf does this guy actually want? like is it worth uprooting your and your fams life for 10m over 6 years? Which is way less than that when taxes and agent fees come into play?
So 6 years is a long shot but 5 keeps us in the running?
Surely we won’t end up with *two* Javy Baezes!
I’d be happy with a 5 year deal. I wonder why he hasn’t accepted? He must be looking for something more? It’s really hard to know because we just don’t get many details at all.
I get where Bregman is coming from. What 31 year old wouldn’t love to lock in a 6+ year deal. His problem is he’s coming off a down year stats wise and that understandably has a lot of teams really questioning his potential production 2-3 years out, let alone 6.
I honestly hope the Tigers don’t go any longer than apparently they already have on the table for him. I can see him being a value over the next 2 years, but beyond that they’re going to have some young guns now in the farm system ready to go and Bregman may just end up being a big contract in the way of that.
He’s a top 10 3rd baseman and we don’t have a great 3rd base prospect. PAY HIM! Who cares what the back end of his contract looks like? Tigers have one of the lowest payrolls and they will waste 2 two years of Skubal if they don’t step up.
If we are offering 5. Just offer 6. Our payroll is 100 million come on already
