Personally I have never seen anything spectacular with Eberflus and only remember years of mediocrity when he was the DC with the colts. I was then super shocked to see him get a head coaching spot anywhere and I know the bears stinking wasn’t all on him, but he didn’t do much to help.
I know there are plenty worse options, but has anyone ever been impressed with this dude?

  1. bears love colts rejects.

then all the sudden you have had 2 “great jobs” and get hired in name alone

  2. There was a couple year stretch where I think he was really impressive. Fans are always annoyed when DCs don’t blitz a ton (of course, also get annoyed if you get beat deep…) but there was a couple of years where the Colts’ D was a turnover creating machine, and his “swarm to the ball” type of defense is one of the reasons. When Shaq Leonard was crushing it, it was because Eberflus knew how to use him.

  3. I mean, he took the Colts defense from one of the worst in the league to a 8-12 ranking every year he was here.

  4. He came to us from the cowboys so he has links there. Plus, Jerry probably got him on a pretty cheap deal since he does not like to pay coaches top dollar

  5. I know the last couple of years have been grim around here but at least we aren’t the Cowboys.

  6. I don’t think he’s anything spectacular, but a solid DC. Not a good HC. He was top 10 in points allowed 2 of 4 years with the colts. To be fair, I wouldn’t say we had massive defensive talent at that time either.

  7. Eberflus was hated by the fans because the DC is the easiest person to blame when expectations aren’t met.

The year before he came, we were 30th in overall defense and scoring defense. We were 10th in his first year and in the top 10 from 2018-2021. There’s a reason he was a HC candidate, and even if he sucked at that, he was a very good DC. Colts fans rejoiced when he left but should have known it could get (much) worse.

  8. Great hire imo. For all the unnecessary hate he gets, he’s one of the best DC in the league period.

  9. He’s great with linebackers imo. He also was the lb coach for Dallas I believe when we hired him so the connection makes sense

  10. He’s a better DC than most people think, but I wouldn’t call him elite.

He has ties to Dallas though. When we brought him over, we hired him from Dallas where he was the LB coach. Denico Autry was a mid-level guy brought over as a liaison for his scheme as well.

  11. I thought he was a good coordinator but I agree not sure how he got into these positions just like that. He had some good defenses on an overall mediocre team and then got a head coaching job.

Same thing with Sirianni. I was under the impression he wasn’t even calling plays on offense while he was here and Frank was doing play calling. Obviously worked out for him, but not sure how either of them were big head coach candidates.

  12. As Head Coach was awful but as DC is a lot better than some people think his job with the Colts was that have him being the Head Coach in the league.
