Utah Hockey abandons YETI… adds “Wasatch” name

The Utah Yeti is dead.
The next step to finding the Utah Hockey Club’s permanent name will begin Wednesday night at the Delta Center with a fan survey between the final three names: Utah Hockey Club, Utah Mammoth and … Utah Wasatch.
Wait — what?
Yep, a new name (Wasatch) has emerged as things reach the top three — along with a pretty glaring omission.
The perceived favorite Utah Yeti(s) is out as an option; though, not necessarily by the team’s choice.
“At the end of the day, (Yeti coolers) have a trademark that allows them to print Yeti or Yetis on clothing and other licensed merchandise, and without a coexistence agreement, we would not be able to print that,” Smith Entertainment Group executive Mike Maughan said.
A coexistence agreement is a deal struck by the two companies, allowing each to use the name. But both sides would have had to say yes to such a deal, and the cooler company declined.

This could’ve all been avoided if Utah had been allowed to keep the Coyotes name and brand. Typical NHL getting in its own way.
I really am so confused why this Shark vacuum guy seems to like hockey so much. … Also, as a Utahn who participated in the voting phase last year, I'm disappointed so many of the names from that survey got nyxed. One of the options was Mountaineers. That's like the thing that brings almost all cultures together in Utah is the love of the mountains.
It's so weird that they didn't push harder to get the name. If it can't be that, I hope it's mammoth 🦣 though

Last night I was at the Utah Pittsburgh hockey game and they let us fans vote on the 3 names and logos that the team will be using. You had to give them your phone while you voted on a iPad and got see the new logo for the Utah hockey Club, Wasatch and the Mammoth. The logo for the hockey club and Wasatch are the same design while the Mammoth is a completely different design. The logo we got to see is the logo they would have used for the Yeti if they could have gotten that name. Very good looking logo for both designs. The next 3 games fans at the game get to vote for their favorite. Colors of the logo and uniforms are the same as they are now.
Those drinking cups are not called Stanley cups. They are Stanley Quenchers, Hydrates, Coolers, Jigs, etc. People just call them Stanley cups. Drink ware sporting the name Utah Yetis could eventually just be called Yeti Cups and people will eventually confuse the two; buying a Utah Yeti cup when they think they are buying a YETI cup.
what sucks is that as a Utah resident who isn't going to the games to vote on the new name has less of a say on the name as visiting team fans who are going to those games.
In the National Lacrosse League which is indoors and is fun and inexpensive to go to. There is a team called the Colorado Mammoth with a Mammoth mascot called Wolly If there's a team near your city check them out.
If its utc or wasatch, make the mascot a yeti
This is ridiculous. The yeti is a mythological creature. You shouldn't be allowed to claim the exclusive rights over an existing word outside of your own industry.
I think Wasatch would be a cool compromise to make up for not being able to use Yeti.
They should stick with the name Utah Hockey Club.
Shows just how common sense isn't a thing at the trademark office but if it's gotta be one of those names Mammoth is the best of the 3 and I think the logo could be very cool

When you ask if the fans are the ultimate decider, I long thought that it didn’t matter what the fans chose, as long as a majority were happy enough with Yeti we would be the Yeti. Now that YETI coolers threw a wrench in that, I don’t know

Yeti pay a MLS team to place their name on the front of a jersey each year, why let a NHL do it for free and devalue the sponsorship

I think Outlaws sounds better than either Mammoth or Wasatch. But that’s just me.
While I watched this video I was sipping water from a Yeti tumbler, and honestly I had no idea. Not until I actually looked at the cup. I think the Yeti brand could greatly enhance their presence simply by making a deal! Whenever someone looks at the NHL standings they are going to be reminded of Yeti.
Hockey Club stinks to high heaven, too much connection to soccer. And, don't get me started at mixing soccer with hockey! Wasatch is horrible, doesn't flow well verbally and too many will go, "what's a Wasatch?" Mammoth is the best of the 3, but not as good as some other options. I wasn't wild about Yeti, but at least it flowed verbally.
Part of the negotiation with the Yeti brand could be, "Hmm,… we could always choose Mammoth, with also starting our own brand of Mammoth mugs, tumblers, coolers, etc."
Utah Tusks or Tuskers
Drink cups sold at the stadiums are trash. I would not want my company name associated. People will think the cheap ones are Yeti brand.
It's very possible that YETI has sponsorship agreements with other NHL clubs and that could be where the confusion could actually come in.
