Edwin Díaz talked about the 2026 WBC. “If I get selected for the Puerto Rican national team, I’ll say 100% yes. If the Mets give me permission, I can participate.”

  1. Fuck it, let everyone play. That last WBC was some of the best baseball we’ve ever gotten to see.

  2. There shouldn’t be any “if my team gives me permission” every guy that wants to play should be allowed to play

  3. He’s basically a lock to get selected. I wonder if the Mets and other teams are going to be less willing to let their stars go because of his injury. IIRC most of the opt outs last time were the players decision.

  4. If Diaz tore his patellar tendon for jumping up and down, he was probably going to get injured in spring training anyways had he not participated in the WBC

edit: A patellar tendon tears usually after sudden, high force movements (like jumping up and down). It is possible that a perfectly healthy patellar tendon tears when this happens, but the risk increases when the tendon is overused. It’s safe to assume that Diaz’s patellar tendon was already being overused and was going to tear eventually, regardless of if it was in the WBC or not.

  5. Freak 1 in a million injury. Also if you watched the Mets in the playoffs he has since instituted a no celebration policy.

  6. Does he not realize he probably won’t be under contract with the Mets after this year? Or is he actually planning not to opt out?

  7. The playoff run was a good test of his ability to celebrate without injury. He passed. Let the kids play.
