T-Mac calls out Larkin

  1. From the article: “Todd McLellan delivered a blistering assessment of Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin after an unusually flat performance.

“I can’t beat around the bush — he was missing,” the Wings head coach said after their 5-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday. “He’s a big boy, he can handle hearing that. He’s going to hear it from me. Just a lot of mishandles, unsure plays that he usually makes.””

He also dismissed him being tired from four nations saying we’re “already so far past that”

  2. The team didn’t look good right off the hop and Larkin was absent. This is much needed tough love and I think McLellan is doing his job here

  3. Larkin should be put on blast, all players should. It’s an issue of accountability and that needs to be there in order to make the playoffs.

The trick is though not to turn accountability into berating players and toxicity which hurts production

  4. Teams are playing physical with him. Minnesota did it too. The fist line has been absent lately. I hope that changes

  5. Accountability.

It was what was missing from the Lalonde regime.

I’d much rather hear an honest assessment over the old Newsy classic: “lots of positives to take from this loss, we’ll get em’ next time”.

  6. I like the accountability.. He didn’t go on a Torts rant and backs the captain to the gondola to watch.

He stated simple facts and nothing that 71 wouldn’t admit.

  7. Bring on the downvotes. Over valuing the 4 Nations tournament is a huge mistake for what is essentially a glorified all star game. It does not matter and players should not be risking their seasons to play in it

  8. 1. He’s not wrong
    2. 100% he told Larkin this was coming before he said it to the press.

They’re all professionals, hopefully it gives the whole team a spark.

  9. Good on him , the problem with lalonde was he let things snowball, one bad performance leads to another and another so on and so on .. call it out now before it becomes something more than just one bad game

  10. Dylan knows the score; he’s a Captain, recognizes what’s up, and will respond with his performance.

  11. I thought this was about Tracy McGrady. Like damn, even retired NBA players are noticing Larkin’s bad game last night.

  12. This is the type of honest assessment I want to hear from a coach. He’ll have them ready to bounce back for the stadium game tomorrow

  13. I’m a huge Larks fan. He is the heart of the team but last night was a brutal game for him. Can’t remember if I have said to myself “wtf Larkin?!”As much as I did last night. I have faith the kid will have a monster game outdoors tomorrow though.

  14. I was at the Blue Jackets game yesterday and there was indeed some notable mumbling about Larkin among the crowd around me: “I think he’s tired”, “he doesn’t seem to be on the ice much”, “I think he’s hurting”, “he’s not handling the faceoffs”. Heard all those yesterday.

In my mind I suspected like many that he may going through a fatigue hangover from the Four Nations. I see it’s been reported Todd called that out as a non-factor but nonetheless Larkin is human and I can still imagine fatigue being a factor regardless of what Todd says.

  15. The difference between lalonde and Todd is so clear. LaLonde has no idea how to command respect from a room. Can’t get people to buy in. Todd doesn’t give a fuck. He will demote and call out the captain to get results

  16. Can the mods please implement a rule where the post headline cannot be editorialized? It’s worked well for the Detroit and Michigan subs. Thanks!

It’s a mix of the below:

    * Scapegoat. Todd is using it as a distraction from the fact that he is swimming a lil’ bit attempting to figure out how to juggle lines with Copp being gone for the season. Lines in a blender for sure.

    * Stalling. McLellan is just buying the team some time until Yzerman pulls the wool over another GM’s eyes before next Friday. Another piece is coming.

    * Motivation. Larkin *must* pull the wagon for a pivotal game in front of a huge live and televised crowd in less than 48 hours. Wolverine blood runs deep and Copp was apart of that.

  17. I respect a coach that will just straight up say it like it is, and so do the players…no fluff, and not being crazy disrespectful…just saying exactly what is going on

Last time was “play fucking hockey”, and we all know how that turned out

  18. Good! No country club handling of the adults, please 👍.

At the same time, this critique comes with the understanding that Larkin fights *hard* so these off games are more noticeable.

  19. This is what good coaches do.

You can’t excuse a poor performance because of good performances in the past.

End of story. And in reality, this whole thing is a non-story.

  20. This is what annoys me about Larkin’s game. He’s elite for like 85-90% of games, but when he puts up a bad performance, it’s very noticeable and almost a detriment to the team. He can get really careless with the puck, especially on power plays. I’m glad Todd is calling him out.

  21. Wasn’t there some guy in here that has been saying that Larkin takes nights off for the last few years?

  22. I get TMac calling Larks out but L-O-Fucking-L to all these keyboard warriors dogpilling on saying what does an extra 4 games mean. We’re behind screens while dude plays a professional sport with a grueling season.

I bet he’ll get right soon but some of y’all need to shut the hell up.

  23. “Calls out” is big-time editorializing.

He answered a question, and he answered it honestly — and his answer reflected what a lot of us saw and observed on our own: Larkin wasn’t at his best last night.

*Which is probably OK.* There are a lot of games in a season, and not every player is playing at their top level every single game.
