making a spectacle by describing this as an open competition? Doesn’t it further undermine Anthony Richardson, which the Colts arguably already did at times last season? Strange.
2) Still not convinced the Colts are going to land a truly impactful QB. Most w options will seek a team without an incumbent starter. Sure, the Colts are calling it an open competition. But let's be serious: It's in everyone's best interest for Richardson to win the job.
3) I had an incalculable number of interactions during the Combine that included questions on the status of Ballard. Lots of folks surprised he was retained. It solidifies the idea he’s seen as being on the hot seat in ‘25. Very hot, perhaps. In a couple weeks, we'll see if it translates into a more active free agency period. My sense is it will.
4) Lots of Colts fans in love w Penn State TE Tyler Warren. No surprise here, but seems the Colts are high on him too. But the question I came away with is whether he gets to pick 14. His camp thinks there are multiple landing spots before Indy. Will he fall to them? (END)

If AR has the fire that people claim then maybe this will make him feel like he has something to prove…which as of today he still has alot to prove.
The Colts aren’t signing actual QB competition. They’re just trying to sound tough to fans. So they’re gonna sign a vet starter, solidifying the idea Ballard (who’s already on the hot seat) can’t draft a winning roster?
You call it an open competition to light a fire under your QB and hold him accountable. If calling him out publicly undermines him, then maybe that’s the answer you need? Not sure what the big deal is from Holder here.
Gotta make it public so agents and free agent QBs know they’ve got a shot. If I’m Justin Fields I would jump at this opportunity since there’s zero chance the Colts would supplant him in the draft.
Draft Quinn Ewers in round 2 or 3 and I guarantee he will beat out Richardson.
I think what most people are missing that Chris and the front office is probably trying to drive interest from someone like Fields who will probably have some options
That 4-13 record is feeling more and more like

I’m sorry…Holder does some good shit but this take is fcking stupid.
EVERYBODY SAW HOW ANTHONY PLAYED. WHO HONESTLY THINKS THERE SHOULDN’T BE COMPETITION AT THE SPOT.
YOU’RE STRUGGLING TO UNDERSTAND THE RATIONALE BEHIND SAYING A QB WHO HAS THE 3rd LOWEST COMPLETION PERCENTAGE IN THE MODERN ERA WILL HAVE COMPETITION?
I swear…the reporting on the colts can be just as bad as the product on the field.
There is no spectacle here. BALLARD IS THE GM AND HE STILL HAS A JOB TO DO. That doesn’t mean sugar coating Anthony Richardson.
Ffs this shit is terrible. Y’all will find a way to cry about ANY AND EVERYTHING.
And other front offices are surprised the colts are going to let Ballard end with Anthony? You’re telling me not one front office personnel made that connection? That’s probably why you get situations like the Bears where Caleb already has a fired coach because the Bears wanted to keep Eberflus and their gm through another lottery qb cycle.
The cool things is I’ve stepped off this train until the season starts and now it doesn’t bother me any more. I’ll probably see who they draft and then it’s back offline.
Only thing I notice is when the headlines across my Reddit feed like this.
I don’t think it’s calling him out. He hasn’t been up to snuff on or off the field. Something needs to change.
By prepping the fans if they bring in a guy and he takes the job.
Might light a fire under his ass. “Let’s coddle a grown man who hasn’t done his job” is a weak ass take. The fact he hasn’t already been cut is more than he’s earned on the field.
Unfortunately, we have terrible leaders in this organization. It shows with the decisions and actions. PR fumbles like this make you shake your head. Letting your starting linebacker and “leader” get on a podcast and talk each week during the season creating noise/distractions. It’s all a mess, I don’t see it changing until the leadership does. I’ll be here regardless, always am. Peyton years were my formative years so I’m a lifetime fan on nostalgia alone at this point.
I’m assuming ticket sales are struggling and the feedback is that fans are tired of not having a competent QB so they are trying to get butts in seats.
I know my ticket rep mentioned AR and his struggles when he called a couple weeks ago.
It’s not an open competition for QB, Ballard is just saying this to appease the fans.
Holder is way overthinking this. It’s a press conference, Ballard and Shane know they are going to be asked about it, and they know they can’t give a half-assed answer. So they said what is happening. Not at all odd
If there is an “open competition” maybe potential competing qb’s will be more interested in challenging for the position
Ballard doesn’t have a plan. So he’s broadcasting signals that he does into the public because he knows that’s where his trial is being held. I don’t think Irsay has any idea what he’s doing here, so he’s watching how the public reacts. Ballard knows this, so that’s where he’s performing his theater.
Ballard trying to appease some PR between the AR lovers and haters.
Remember it’s all about keeping folks going to games.
The Colts and the StL Cardinals are both just embarrassing themselves with personnel decisions and speaking out of pocket in the offseason.
Fortunately for me, I get to be a fan of both
Old folks on this app say calling it an open competition, “Will light a fire,…but knowing this younger generation, it breads like of trust and zero confidence …be careful what you wish for
Tells me that the Colts are putting public pressure on a not dedicated quarterback to get his butt in gear and work much harder in the off season or he is gone. Bigger indicator will be who they sign for “competition “. Will it be a washed up older former starter or a high draft choice young former starter cut loose by his team?
