[schefter] Former Vikings QB Daniel Jones is finalizing a one-year, $14 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts, per sources. Jones had a chance to return to Minnesota, but now becomes the challenger to the Colts’ former first-round pick Anthony Richardson.

  1. Calling it now: Daniel Jones shocks the colts staff with his conservative play style and checkdown passing. They name him the starter. And we suck ass.

  2. Has a real chance to revive his career here under Steichen if AR doesn’t pan out (who I’m still rooting for). Think he is definitely more talented than Minshew and we were on the cusp of a playoff berth with him

  3. I am not mad about it. In the grand scheme of things, he didn’t cost that much. He is a mid player, but a great character. Put some pressure on Anthony and help him improve into the starter he can be!

  4. Honestly expected this for a couple of weeks, I’m alright with it. Obviously, I hope AR beats him out though in training camp.

  5. Why not just run with ARich for the whole year and if he’s good, great, if he sucks just use the high pick? I don’t see how this makes the Colts contenders or helps tank.

  6. I mean, the available QB market is so poor that this makes sense. Sadly, if he beats out AR – it doesn’t mean that Jones is that good, but rather that AR just that bad. Do I see it happening? Who knows at this point.

  7. I mean. I love the 1 year part and the move in general

But I was hoping closer to 8.

  8. We now have the versatility of a QB that only throws the long ball and is turnover prone PLUS a QB that only throws the checkdown and is also turnover prone!

  9. Idk how to feel about this signing. If he beats out AR, then I’ll be sad, but also happy that we can fire Ballard for having 8 years and having not won a single divisional title. IMO, if he beats out AR, then we can get over AR and can start tanking for the next potential franchise QB. It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out

  10. All the qb signings over the years I’ve felt good about turned out to be bad. That means this one is going to work out, right?

  11. Was it a slight overpay by a few million bucks? Probably. Is that what you have to do to add depth in free agency. Yes usually. Are the same people who hate Ballard for not spending in free agency the ones crying foul over the price? Probably.

  12. Lowest passer rating in the NFL over the past two seasons:
    Daniel Jones
    Anthony Richardson ([@Ihartitz](https://x.com/Ihartitz))

Chris didnt lie, if he brought someone better there would be no competition

  13. If you’ve read my post you know I’m a pretty big Ballard detractor and cannot wait for him to be out of the job however he is actually paying free agency money to players which is a good sign that maybe he has tried to adjust a little bit.

No, we didn’t get DK Metcalf or Justin Fields, but he obviously is trying to loosen up his historically tight purse strings. You can not win in this league without overpaying for free agents. That is how you get a free agent to come to your team instead of staying with their own. We still have a long way to go, and I don’t think Jones will move the needle, but for once, at least he’s doing something in the free agent market.

  14. I am fine with this. Look, we are looking for neither a QB1 or a QB2, but somewhere in between like QB1.5. Ballard wanted to create competition. How many candidates are there for this role, a competent competitor for QB1, who is also accepting this role and wiling to create some real competition and proving himself? I am not sure. This seems a good fit to me.

  15. Wouldn’t shock me if AR “wins” the starting job and then we find out how much of a lie that was during the season.
