NOTE: I am a small-town sportswriter by trade and a sports history nerd by hobby, but I am relatively new to being a Hurricanes fan and to ice hockey in general. I thought this might be a fun way for me to learn some of our team history and provide some interesting posts in the process, as long as there are no objections. I plan to cover all areas of New England Whalers/Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes history in the process.

March 18, 2012

Final score: Carolina Hurricanes 4, Winnipeg Jets 3

Arena: MTS Centre

Attendance: 15,004

In 2012, the Carolina Hurricanes won for the fourth consecutive March 18 with a road win over the Winnipeg Jets 4-3.

Carolina also defeated the New Jersey Devils 4-2 in 2009, the Washington Capitals 4-3 in overtime in 2010, and the New York Islanders 3-2 in OT in 2011.

Against the Jets, the Hurricanes trailed 3-2 after two periods, but stormed back to win on Chad LaRose's goal off assists from captain Eric Staal and Jussi Jokinen with 1:22 left to play. Carolina had tied the game just minutes earlier when Staal scored his 21st goal of the season off a Jokinen assist.

Jokinen got the Hurricanes on the board first with a shorthanded goal in the first period. Staal put Carolina ahead 2-1 early in the second on a power play goal assisted by Tim Brent and Jiří Tlustý.

Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward made 30 saves on 33 shots to take the decision over the Jets' Ondřej Pavelec.

Antti Miettinen (two) and Nik Antropov scored goals for Winnipeg.

Carolina went on to finish the 2011-12 season 33-33-16. Staal finished with 70 points (24 goals, 46 assists), Jokinen with 46 (12, 34), and LaRose with 32 (19, 13).

The Hurricanes'/Whalers' all-time record on March 18 is 17 wins, nine losses, one tie, one overtime loss, and two shootout losses.

Carolina most recently played on March 18 in 2023, beating the Philadelphia Flyers 5-4 in OT in Raleigh.
