Pittsburgh Pirates fans are getting fed up, and they made their voices heard on Friday all throughout their home-opening 9-4 loss to the New York Yankees. The message to owner Bob Nutting is very, very clear — it is time to sell.
Not only was the announced attendance roughly 2,000 below PNC Park’s capacity, but multiple “sell the team” chants rained down from the stands every time something went wrong for the Pirates on the field.
When a series of errors in the third inning helped lead to a 4-0 lead, the chants started.

They continued at various points throughout the day and reached their loudest in the sixth inning when shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa was picked off first base in what was, at the time, a 7-1 game.
Somebody also purchased a “sell the team” banner to be flown over the stadium before first pitch.

The only way things will change is for fans to quit going to the games, not wearing bags over your heads.
First of all he lied to the people of Allegheny county. He said, he would spend as revenues increased. He did not. Bob nutting after the 2015 season refused to sustain the team. The only reason he owns the Pirates is that he does make a profit. That is all he cares about. The Pirates did nothing in the off-season to improve the team and nobody is asking for Pittsburgh to spend like New York or LA. What fans are asking is simply sign key players that can improve your lineup. They don't sign anyone. It is a joke. Bob Nutting destroyed the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Pirates ownership and management live in their own insular world. Fan concerns are the least of their concerns. The current organization is equal parts incompetence and arrogance, which means nothing can or will ever change. Pirate fans have been particularly disrespected since the 2020 season after Ben Cherington and Derek Shelton were hired.
Bob Nutting, Ben Cherington, and Derek Shelton have said repeatedly, "Our focus is winning." Look at the product on the field since 2020. Not only have the fans had to suffer through most of the games, but they still have to deal with an organization that hasn't bothered to establish a genuine relationship with the fan base. Blatant fan disregard, lies and misinformation, and an ethos of superiority appear to be the cornerstones of an intentional fan-suppression strategy.
This organization is a shitshow on purpose. The owner and management team are being well-compensated for continual incompetence and minimal-to-no effort. This is a cozy gig so they don't need to change a thing. They'll just stay in their no-accountability comfort zone, while deluding themselves with the belief that fans will believe anything they say publicly. This organization is toxic with a capital T.
Local governments shouldn’t pay for ballparks or stadiums for billionaires.
Baseball has been struggling with attendance. One could even argue the steroid era saved baseball, as attendance was also bad then. Bonds, Mcguire, Sosa. They made things interesting it drew people. Point i am making is baseball dont have the popularity to be paying these players what they are paying them. People are not going to the park, look at opening days across the sport. Lackluster turnouts. Its going to only get worst as the season goes. They need to make it more accessible to people, easier to become interested. If not baseball has lots if hurdles ahead.
Pirates REMOVED RETIRED ROBERTO CLEMENTE number for an AD !
AA team playing in a top 5 park in MLB.
Re: re-signing star players – the Pirates will argue they have done that by extending Reynolds, Keller & Hayes. They managed to do that in the past with Cutch and others. Not sure how that bodes for extending Skenes. It was generally accepted that they had no chance extending Cole before he was traded. I think their biggest issue is developing and maximizing the players they do have. Their roster is so brutally thin because they just don’t have depth of talent.
Same thing happening in St. Louis! Growing up in St. Louis as a Cardinals fan I have never seen this small of an opening day attendance.
It's similar to the Guardians' situation with cheap ownership. We come within three wins of the world series and decide to trade away the middle of our batting order… Meanwhile, the rich keep getting richer with the Dodgers signing players to deferred salaries. The finances of the game need to be fixed and fast or these small markets are just going to lose interest in the sport eventually.
Paul Skenes wouldn’t turn down the biggest contract for a pitcher in history to stay with a team that has no interest in contending
some day youth will prevail over fat cat power houses some super scouting and some luck with a few vets it could happen i wonder how much it cost to go to a pirates game ? i live in nyc area and ugh ! give me a sunny afternoon game in july with few beers and hot dogs and change from a 50 wow ! thats ok to me if the team at least shows effort
The Pittsburgh Pirates are the Nutting family's cash cow. Any profits the organization makes are siphoned off to line the family's pockets. They make token expenditures on their minor league system — which producing nothing in the way of young major league capable talent.
The Nutting's other holdings are small town newspapers, a golf course and trap and skeet range, plus a hodgepodge of other puny businesses. The Nuttings are known for holding onto whatever they own forever while being extraordinarily cheap. They care for no one in their organizations. If you're not a family member — forget about working there.
They are so cheap reporters at their newspapers have to share notebook computers. You read that right. A $200 Chromebook is too much for them to spend on an employee — while the Nuttings fly off for vacations on the company dime. At their Seven Springs resorts, they fired long-time employees who had decades long relationships with customers for a bunch of minimum wage employees brought in from a resort management company. After propping up the numbers for a year they unloaded the place before they collapsed — a rare move for them.
They held onto their newspaper businesses past their peak. Same with a yellow pages directory business and a bunch of commercial printing plants they used to print their newspapers plus other project work. They just focus on the bottom line and that's it. They hire second rate people across the board because they're cheap — then tell them what to do. As a result, they make gigantic blunders like giving their local television rights away for peanuts right as the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels, and other teams began scoring gigantic deals.
The Pirates could easily bring in someone like Pittsburgh sports attorney Chuck Greenberg, who negotiated the Texas Rangers' landmark local television rights deal, to give the organization a breath of fresh air, creativity, and revenue — but that will never happen because the Nuttings believe nobody's smarter than them — then get rid of anyone who is. They're simply terrible, terrible people who deserve zero fan support.
Of course, when their contract at PNC is up — they'll shop the Pirates around Nashville or some other place desperate for a baseball team and will have no problem moving a team with over a century of history as long as the envelope they receive is thicker than the one from Pittsburgh.
While the Nuttings aren't as over the top stupid as Tepper of the Carolina Panthers or blindingly creepy as the owner the City Less Athletics — they're right up there with the worst owners in sports. And MLB lets them get away with it.
Other than Frazier the largest deal they offered anyone was to the kid that pulled the one of one Skenes card. Pathetic.
It's weird to hear PNC Park referred to as relatively new at about 24 years old. I know it's completely true compared to say Fenway or Wrigley but it's just weird when I remember that Three Rivers Stadium only lasted about 30 years
Skenes will be traded for a number of prospects the Yankees have given up on, utility players, and cash. 💰
MLB has big problems that have to be addressed. Dead beat owners, archaic television deals, horrible stadiums, deep pocket teams gobbling up all the talent among the league. I do not envy whomever the new commissioner will be, but I hope that they tackle some of these big issues.
It’s just so frustrating that we have one of the most electrifying pitchers ever and all of us are just waiting for the day he leaves Pittsburgh already because of their unwillingness to competw
The Orioles are headed back to be irrelevant. Young players are not being be offered contract extension and signing free agents that are at point in their carriers where they are not building a contender.
As a Pittsburgher and a long time pirates fan, I understand the frustration and wish we do a lot more. However, Bob Nutting is committed to keeping the team in Pittsburgh and I do give him a lot of credit for not being an owner looking to get the team out of town.
Just took a nice road trip to Pittsburgh for open weekend versus the Yankees… Beautiful city, beautiful ballpark cool fans. Gotta say though having a smaller market team with a smaller payroll I got to sit behind home plate for $65. Seats like that at Yankee Stadium or Dodgers stadium are untouchable at a reasonable price.
My wife was born in Pittsburgh, so they're my third team (behind Rangers & Phillies).
The first time they had a winning season was some years ago when they were in Texas playing the Rangers. I got to witness that in person. Mostly their big highlight of late.
who wanna buy the team if the team getting sell, and also I'm not buying the Pirates
I get the Skenes Yankee jersey, because only the Dodgers and Yankees can afford any star anymore. Sometimes the Mets. And it is getting very boring watching them buy up everything and skewing the league so much. The most boring championship of my lifetime last year. A true bought championship. And if that is the only 2 or 3 teams that all the biggest stars are going to go to anymore, what is the point of following the MLB anymore unless your a fan of one of those two or three teams?
It’s a shame to watch the Bucs struggle like this. Pittsburgh is a very proud sports city and rightfully so. A lot of this I blame on MLB’s mismanagement of the sport. A salary cap is needed and/or revenue sharing regulations need updating. Owners shouldn’t be allowed to spend endless money and teams shouldn’t be allowed to keep revenue sharing money the way they do. I’ve been a fan of baseball since 1972 so I remember some of the great Bucs teams. They need to spend more (Skanes extension MUST be top priority) plus ownership need work with city to figure out improvements to baseball’s most beautiful park
As a 28 year old Yankee fan that has lived about an hour north of Pittsburgh my whole life, I can’t describe how much I hate what Nutting and previous owners have done to the Pirates smh. Even when I was a kid, I realized that they’d never be truly competitive bc of how cheap the owner was and how incompetent the front office was. The only reason I became a Yankee fan is bc I watched movies like 61 and the pride of the Yankees with my dad as a kid. I’ve always cheered for the Pirates but I refuse to support them financially until something changes smh.
I'm not mad at the Players for the Pirates,.. it's the franchise and Nutting, not doing what's necessary for the team to be a post season contender. Hasn't been done since 2013,14, and 2015. It's f'n terrible 😒… 😔
Paul Skenes is an example of why he wants to go out there on the mound and dominate the game.
He and the rest of the players are probably on the same page. Nutting! We're are not minor league team. We're are the Pittsburgh Pirates, damnit 😠
We were that team, who won 5 World Series titles within 116 years ( 1909, 1925, 1960, 1971, 1979 ) and haven't seen the " big one" in over 45 years. Fans are not happy with the progress made here in helping this team prevail to the postseason/ World Series, and neither am I 😔
The same thing is going on in St. Louis and Cincinnati. Without a salary cap in baseball, 10 teams will control the game, and 20 will serve as fodder for the other 10. It wasn't okay when Kansas City served as the Yankees AAAA team until Charlie Finley bought the team. Now, 2/3 of the league are like 1950s Athletics.
at this point i’m fine with them leaving pittsburgh all together! get them to a city who is bored enough to want a suffering team in their city.
Pirates have Cruz & Skenes and are messing up. So sad.
PNC is a beautiful park.
Please don't change it.
Nutting is a joke
To be fair, the single playoff game kinda screwed them. Been a fan my whole life. Was in three rivers stadium in 1992. Haven’t seen anything like that till the blackout game.
The Pirates should be flush with cash. However, Hutting used the funds for his other "investments." Call it like it is. He's selfish, hates his labor force and never let fan loyalty get in the way of making a "Buc"!
No pennant since 1979.
If ownership won't support the team….why should the fans.
