Eliminated: New Jersey Devils End of Season Analysis
Hello everyone. This is Kingrats here. Welcome back to the channel, guys. Today I’m going to be doing a little bit more of a NHL playoff analysis. As of last night, we officially have our first team that has been eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs for 2025, and that is unfortunately the New Jersey Devils. New Jersey was eliminated last night in double overtime by the Carolina Hurricanes with their series officially concluding with Carolina winning in five games. and kind of what everyone was expecting. Uh if you watched my series prediction video for the playoffs this year, you know how bad this whole prediction was. I for some reason had New Jersey going all the way to like the conference finals. And that was of course with a lack of context on my part because I really failed miserably to actually read the situation for New Jersey. So that’s my bad. But yeah, for the Devils, the series ends in a gentleman’s sweep at the hands of the Hurricanes, who have sneakily worked their way back into the contenders picture. They will play the winner between the Washington Capitals and the Montreal Canadians, which could happen tonight considering the Caps are up three games to one going into game five. So, we’ll see how things go there. But this video is just going to be a quick run through of the New Jersey Devils and what they’re looking like going into the off season and basically how this year went about and why they fell apart in the playoffs so quickly. Before I get into it, if you guys enjoy this type of content, please leave a like, subscribe to the channel for more content if you like this one, and I’ll get into it right now. Starting off, New Jersey started the year with almost like a fresh page. For one, last year it was disappointing that they missed the playoffs, but due to a a number of injuries to their key players that really killed their season. In the offseason, they brought in Sheldon Keefe to be their new head coach. And of course, he brought with him tons of playoff experience or well, whatever playoff experience he got out of Toronto, let’s be honest. And of course, a brand new coaching philosophy. They also made a couple of major trades, notably, for example, bringing in Jacob Marstrom from the Calgary Flames in an offseason trade. and that really bolstered their goalending. Uh the start of the year, they looked pretty good. Um they were getting really good work out of their goalending. Their defense was strong. They were getting good numbers out of guys like Nico Heir and Jack Hughes. But then after the All-Star break, things started to basically come off the rails for them. They lost Jack Hughes to a season ending injury against a game in Vegas and that basically costed him for the rest of the year. And then when we got to the playoffs, this Devils team was really depleted. They had already lost a few guys extra to injuries on the back end. I don’t think they got back, for example, Ducky Hamilton until like the last game of the regular season. Guys like Jonas Seganthaler couldn’t play. I don’t know if Kova Seavich got much playing time either because of injuries. Uh Jacob Marstrom had to really shoulder a lot of the load cuz the defense was falling apart for the Devils and their offense definitely came apart, especially when we get to playoff time. And by the season’s end, they finished third in the Metro. and they were basically locked into a series with Carolina for I don’t know maybe the last like 10 or 15 games of the regular season. Like I remember it was like the earliest matchup that they had already set on schedule before the regular season ended for the Devils. Once they got into the playoffs, this was already a very depleted roster. Most people expected these guys to probably not even win a game. They did win at least one game, so there is that, but um it was a very short-lived success there. Following up with the injuries, this team suffered even more of them in the playoffs. Notably, they lost Luke Hughes and Brendan Dylan after game one. And both of these guys would not play for the rest of the series. So, that really tested their depth and just this depleted roster left a ginormous talent gap between them and Carolina. And the Hurricanes took full advantage of it. The special teams were fully in favor of Carolina. the Devils were plagued by issues on uh the power play and the penalty kill the first two games and that carried over for the rest of the series. It would have taken really a herculean effort by Jacob Marstrom just to keep the Devils within games and especially we saw that in game five where he basically had to stand on his head for the entire time and it was just like a you know a solid play in overtime that got the game winner for Carolina. But um you know it’s just it was only a matter of time that the Devils are probably just going to run out of gas. Some people will probably argue that Marstrom was left out to dry because of how the team was performing defensively and also the fact that they weren’t really giving him a lot of goal supports. I mean that’s kind of the consequence of getting a depleted roster because of injuries considering most of their talent was outs. But you know it is what it is right. Uh it really hurt the team in the short term having all these injuries. If Jack Hughes was fully healthy going into this series, maybe things would have been a lot different, but I I just don’t really know moving forward. I I would expect that the Devils probably do some major improvements in the offseason. Maybe they try to get some more guys out of free agency or whatnot. They did get some changes last off season and bringing in some more veteran pieces, but we’ll have to see how things go. the the best thing forward for them is if they can get a clean bill of health for all their players and if they can actually like totally stay healthy through the regular season into the postseason next year assuming that they get there. Uh I do like Jacob Marstrom and Jake Allen as their goalending as they’ve definitely proven themselves to be very good. Marstrom shows that he still has a lot left in the tank. So that’s really good to see from them. but they need a clean bill of health from guys like Jack Hughes, Nicoir, Jesper Brat across the season. And until we see that, then it’s going to be tough to see this Devil’s team making any progress moving forward. Uh, but anyway guys, uh, just a real quick analysis here. I don’t want to really get too far into the details, but um, thank you guys so much for watching. Good analysis and good info thank you
Unfortunately, in today’s game, it seems that unless a team plays a structured (trap) system. It becomes increasingly difficult to progress in the playoffs.
Of course you need a goaltender and some high-end players.
It’s not much of a criticism as it is an observation. Unless the team plays defence first, they are pretty much toast.
