Reviewing Devils vs Hurricanes Game Five

Welcome back. All right, second of four reviews. We’re now going to discuss the New Jersey Devils and the Carolina Hurricanes. The game that was played tonight. Uh Markstrom versus Coach Chatco. This game was crazy and then it kind of settled down. Uh but it was it was uh definitely crazy early. So the Canes had the early jump, but they weren’t able to get to the net and New Jersey would score first. At 346, Mercer buries one in close from Peshi. Uh there was reviews about, you know, could they challenge for goalie interference? Well, either way, they don’t challenge for goalie interference. The shots are 4 nothing for the Devils 5 minutes in. So, the Devils really good start to this one on the road. Uh, playing some desperate hockey, and that’s what you want to see in the playoffs when your team is down three games to one and they need a win to stay in the stay in the series. So, at 531, uh, Meyer wires a shot from the slot into the net. Peshi with his second assist of the first period. It’s suddenly two nothing in favor of New Jersey. Very quiet crowd in Carolina at that point. Uh the Canes press to respond. We then get a power play for the Devils. There’s an early clear. Devils cycle. There’s a short-handed rush by Slavven. Uh short-handed chance for Orlov gets blocked. There’s a late cycle. Pucks kill or the the power plays killed off. And then at 9:55 just after the power play comes to an end. Nason makes it 3 nothing for the New Jersey Devils. Uh Nemits and Hamilton with the assists. things that get pushed in a hold by Kachetkov who was very shaky early in this one. Uh Coachette had his struggles in the first period. He did recover and end up with pretty decent stats considering the start, but he definitely was having his struggles in the beginning. Uh shots are 9 to4 for the Devils with 8 and 1/2 minutes left. Uh the Canes press are kept to the outside. Martinook has a rush chance it’s defended. Svetchnikov has a rush chance it’s held. We get some pushing there. Not an overly physical game though. Uh I mean it it went on I mean the hits are there but when you look at the amount of minutes played and everything not as physical as uh a game or two I’m thinking of from tonight. So the Kane’s press are kept to the outside. Martinook has a rush chances defended. There we go. I already read that part. So the teams trade rushes. Now I’m up to the part where I should be should be. Uh Robinson has a net drive chances blocked. Robinson was all around the net tonight. Really. Uh another Fetchnikov rush chance is saved with 17.8 seconds left. There’s a power play for Carolina. So that runs to the end of the first period. It’s three nothing for New Jersey. Really important they have a good second period though. Uh second period, the Canes set up early. The Devils clear. Gost Despair is a shot that’s tipped wide. They Carolina Hurricane cycle. New Jersey clears it. They do kill off the penalty, but at 146, Stanovven buries a cross ice pass just after it’s come to an end. Hall and Slavven with the assist. So it’s three to one. And there’s kind of a switch that seems to go on in this game as the Canes then look for another. Brad has a chance that’s held. There’s some pushing. And then at 40:01, uh Jackson Blake goes short side from in close. Janowski with the assist and suddenly it’s 3 to2. The crowd is very noisy. Uh Carolina suddenly has their confidence back. It’s all bad news for New Jersey at that stage. We do get a timeout called by Sheldon Keefe here. Shots are 4 to2 for the Devils at 5 1/2 minutes, meaning the only two shots Carolina’s had in the period have gone in. So as tough a start as Kachchettov had, now it’s Marstrom that’s not making the saves. And then the third shot that Carolina got one in the net as well. Uh Sachnikov, it’s past a screen. It is from the left circle. Orano with the assists at 540. So shortly after I write the 4 to2 Devil shots while the third shot for Carolina goes in the net. So, not a great start to the period for Marstrom whether these were savable or not. Still no saves on three shots. Not something a goalender wants. Uh, but then at 7:26, heir answers to give New Jersey the lead back at four to three. It’s Arista from the right circle. Good for checking sets that up. The assist to Nason and Carter. So, suddenly New Jersey has their lead back. Uh, then uh the Devils look for another, but we get a power play for Carolina. There’s an early clear. Fetchnikov is a shot that’s turned aside. The Kane cycle and they would draw another penalty. We get 55 seconds of five on three. That’s too long. The Kane cycle and with a wister from the right circle, Aaho scores during the five on three. The assist to Jarvis and Goss to spare at 1127. Uh the Devils then do kill off the five on four. So we’re in a 4-4 tie. And it looks like this one’s going to be crazy. I was like, which 80s magnet am I going to use for this? Anyways, uh the Devils Press with 5 minutes left. There’s more pressure by New Jersey with four minutes left. How a Nason. There’s a near miss there. The Canes have a two-on-one that’s broken up, but it’s 4-4 after two periods of play. We go to the third. Blake has a chance that’s held. That’s the only shot Carolina had early. Shots are two to one for New Jersey at 2 and 1/2 minutes. The Canes press at 3 minutes. Or has a screenshot that goes wide. Then there’s a post for Svetchnikov from the slot. We get a power play for Carolina. They cycle. Gosh Despair has a shot that deflects wide. Power plays killed off. Markstrom recovers from a rough second period. He’s excellent in the third. Honestly, Marstrom was fantastic the rest of the game. Uh so, uh yeah, post goes or where am I at here? Yeah, Markstrom sharpen the third. Now I know where I’m at. When it’s all the lines and I don’t have the goals to break it up, it can sometimes be a situation where I turn to face the camera and talk to all you fine people and I miss where I was at. So, um power play for the Devils. There’s an early clear and another uh then there’s a short-handed near miss for Jarvis. The Canes really never let that power play get set up. It is killed off. Devils press after it’s finished. Uh Slavven then has a shot from the slot that gets blocked by the Devils. Devils go back to the power play. There’s an early clear. Uh short-handed rush by Martin Nook is saved. There’s a late cycle. Pucks cleared again. Power plays killed off. The Devils 04 the series. And it is definitely noteworthy that the New Jersey Devils power play, which wasn’t bad during the regular season, Carolina made it look really bad in the postseason. So that’s definitely a a conversation starter. So U shots are 10-7 Carolina with 4 and 1/2 minutes left. Duman has a point shot that’s blocked. The Kane’s clear. Or has a slapper that’s held as well. Kane’s press with 2 and 1/2 minutes left. Hall has a net drive chance that’s held. The Kane’s press to close it out. So we go to overtime. In overtime, Fetchnikov has a chance that’s caught and held. Stalls denied. The Devils rush the other way. Kane’s press at 3 minutes. Burns has a shot that’s held. Coke and Yummy is a net feed that’s blocked. The team’s trade rushes. Robinson’s absolutely robbed. Markstrom holds there. 6 minutes into the overtime. The shots are 7 to1 Carolina. It is Marstrom against the Canes. Uh Kerier is a shot that’s held again. All Canes. There’s no path to the Carolina net. Carolina did a fantastic job. Every time that New Jersey would get into their zone, there were five of these jerseys right there. Um, if you heard the the the door outside, that alarmed me as well. Uh, anyways, Kier shot that tells all Kanees, no path to the Canad’s net. Martin Nooks denied from the slot. The Devils press at 14 minutes, but are they getting a path to the net? No. Uh, there’s a post for Jarvis. Meer has a net feed that’s held. The Devils ice the puck with 32.6 seconds left. It’s noteworthy because it’s late in the overtime, everybody’s tired, and it gives Carolina a chance to get new guys on the ice. But we go to double overtime for the second time in this series. In fact, this is the only series that’s gone to double overtime in the playoffs. Uh so in the double overtime, heir has a slot shot that’s caught and held. Koken goes down. It’s a 4-minute power play for the Carolina Hurricanes. You just can’t have that. So Mercer’s watching from the box. It means that the series is on the line now. you’ve got to kill off a double minor uh with Carolina’s power play in this series being pretty darn good. Yeah, it’s not great. Uh and Mercer pretty good defensive forward there too. So that’s another part that’s not great. So Aaho has the screenshot that’s held. The Devils clear. They do kill off the first two minutes. Uh the Kane cycle is the second two half minutes is rolling on. Uh Gost Despair has a shot this blocked and then at 417 AO ends the series. So it’s on the second half of the 4-minute power play. Goss to spare and Jarvis with the assist. So Carolina is the first team to move on to round two. New Jersey the first team eliminated from the playoffs. It’s a 5-4 double overtime win. New Jersey didn’t make it easy for Carolina. Well, Marstrom didn’t make it easy for them in this one. Uh for New Jersey, they go back to the drawing board now. Uh for Carolina, they move on to round two and they await likely the Capitals in the next round. Uh that could be an interesting series. Shots on net. 13-9 Devils in the first, 10 a piece in the second, and then Carolina takes over. Uh 15-8 in the third period, and then they outshoot New Jersey 14-3 in the first overtime and 5 to1 in the second. So once we got to extra time, the shots were 19 to4. New Jersey just couldn’t get to the net. Final shots are 53 to 35 for the Carolina Hurricanes. Power plays, New Jersey 0 for3, Carolina 2 for six. Uh the hits 46 to 39 for Carolina. Markstrom saves 48 out of 53. He was excellent. Uh Coachov, uh he bounces back from a rough first period. Uh 31 saves on 35 shots. So for New Jersey, the story line’s going to be that a lot of key players were out. Uh once you’re missing some top forwards and half your defense, uh it does make it more difficult against a team like Carolina where most of their players are healthy. And that is the story line that as we go through the playoffs, the teams that are able to avoid the injury bug the most usually end up doing pretty well in the playoffs. But there you go. As always, I will talk to you again soon.

This one needed extra time. Markstrom did everything he could once we got there.

  1. Kudos to New Jersey for a scrappy effort, especially considering the adversity. Markstrom was brilliant. It was a clean, well-played series to watch…The Canes are lucky to get out of this series with time to rest, because the semi finals with (presumably) the Caps will be vicious…

  2. Anyone who is not a fan of either team who watched this series would assume Carolina finished with 20+ more points in the standings, not 8.

  3. Aho has now 7 points in the last 3 games and 8 points in the last 4 games. I love this new Canes team and i think they will get at least to Conference Finals and has a real possibility to take it all the way to the Cup Finals.

  4. My only wish was that we could put out our full legit team. Banged up or not. Unfortunately, it didn't pan out that way, so there will always be the "what if" we were somewhat healthy like the Canes. Maybe next year. Guys have to hit the gym and take care of their bodies. And that goes double for Jack Hughes.

  5. what really surprised me about the end of the devils season was how long we had without jack hughes. How did we not figure out how to play without him at a high caliber. Just don’t get it.

  6. LFG Canes!

Markstrom was great, PK was a re-bound machine.

Svech was video game good & AHO works his OT magic & Slavin is just amazing.

Burns is lookin like his old school self a bit too!

  7. Man down, man down. First causality of the 2025 NHL playoffs. Markstrom was the only Devil trying to win this game. Canes all 3rd period were all over the Devils. I figured if the Devils win its a crazy bounce and just a lucky break because the Canes where in full control. Better team won. Got 1 match up correct on most of my brackets.

  8. The Refs, the NHL and the N.J. Devils Organization all played a key rolls in having the season end like this for the Devils. I hope the owner of this team makes himself heard and rectifies this. All. the league cares about is there New York market and their control of the television market. Screw the fans.and players who were targeted and hurt.

  9. Has to be the biggest choke of the season. The boys, and more importantly, ownership, have a lot of soul searching to do over the off season. Cheers, Ace! Cheers to the end of this heart attack inducing season…

  10. I couldn't bring myself to watch the recap the next day…That was completely traumatizing and I'm still sick from my head to my stomach with this empty feeling. This went from a dream start to a Vietnam flashback. I imagine captain Nico dragging people away from the frontline, then at the end Markstrom lifting wounded teammates over his back, then in slow motion the saddest scene, he goes down like that scene in we were soldiers with a man over his shoulders 😢. Once mercer old yeller'd us me and my father who I was watching it with both looked at each other and knew that was it. This was a tough way to go out, congrats to a relentless Canes team…

  11. Devils fought hard, considering that they had problems with injuries to some of the key players. Gotta give credit when it's do. Carolina was able to overcome Devils leading 3-0, and good teams find a way to win. We're off golfing, and hopefully, we are healthy next year, and some moves are made. Good luck with Washington.
