Round 2, Game 1 | Brandon Saad Postgame: We Didn’t Play Up To Our Standard

Bron, when things started to turn, did you feel like it was more adjustments that they made or something that you guys lacked? Well, I think it’s both. I think they have a great hockey team, but at the same time, I don’t think we played up to our standard tonight. And obviously, they took advantage of it. What was it in the second period in particular that you feel wasn’t up to the standard? I just think we weren’t sharp with the puck. We were kind of slow. We were going east west plays rather than playing north, getting on the for check. Um, so they create turnovers. They got a great hockey team. They make plays. Uh yeah, for us that was just establishing that for trick. But in reality, I mean the first period of period that you guys were playing up to your standard. I mean, how does it just stop? Is this something they did? Well, I think there’s a push back and then I think for us it’s uh just not executing on plays, you know, we we weren’t sharp with the puck and when we turn it over, they sustain more zone time and when they have the puck, they’re a hard team to check and uh so yeah, I think it was just a little bit of execution for us. You mentioned that you guys were going east west, not so much up north. Is that more imperative against a team like that where you have to go north and not play east west? Yeah, I think uh especially against that team, you don’t want to have any turnovers and you want to get on the for check and um that’s kind of how our identity is built too. So when we don’t get to that, we’re not playing playing good enough hockey. Mark mentioned execution in the neutral zone. That’s something that’s easily correctable you feel like game to game. Yeah, I think we can bounce back. You know, we’re confident in our group. We let that one slip away, which is tough, especially at home. But uh for us, I think there’s no panic. It’s just reset and get on to the next. You guys know Edmonton pretty well as divisional rivals, but is there anything that maybe surprised you about their game tonight? Not too much. You know, I think it’s it’s pretty standard. We know how good of a hockey team they are. We all watched the playoffs. We saw they matched up against LA. So, um, not too much. I just think we we didn’t have a good enough hockey game. Seems like after you guys have a poor puck management game, you guys follow up with a decent one. How how important is it to get the puck management cleaned up before game two? Yeah, it’s huge. I mean, we need a bounceback game, especially here at home before traveling to Edmonton and uh, yeah, so it’s a very important game next game.

  1. VKG, you need to put more pressure on the career backup, Calvin Picard. There is no way youโ€™ll beat Edmonton if you merely try to preserve a lead. Ask the Kings about that. You will be out in five unless you play with more intensity. Ninety-seven and 29 are confident they can score enough goals in the third period to win.
