Will Clarity and Consequences Help the Nashville Predators Bounce Back from a Disastrous Season?

This week we have covered Barry Trotz’s thoughts on what went wrong last season. Today we’re going to share his list of 2024-25 accomplishments and then we’re going to wrestle with the real question this off season. What will actually be different next fall. Your Locked On Predators, your daily podcast on the Nashville Predators, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Happy Friday, everybody. Welcome to the Locked On Predators podcast. Thanks so much for making us your first listen of the day. We are of course your free daily Nashville Predators podcast. We are a part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. want to kick off our Friday episode shouting out our Locked on Predators insiders community and of course our everydayers who tune in to talk Nashville Predators hockey with us. I am Anne Kimmel. I am a writer and a co-host with Penalty Box Radio and my friends I have a partner in crime. You do? I am Emma Lingan and I’m the Predator site editor and reporter for the hockey news. So this week, Emma, you and I have wrestled through some of what Barry Trot shared as kind of the on ice issues that have affected the on ice product over the course of last season. Today, we’re going to talk about the positive spin that we heard from Barry Trotz. He’s going to share the things this team did accomplish, two words that he says are going to guide the team going forward, and then where he expects to see improvement next season. And Emma and I are going to tell you, do we do we buy that berry trots? We’re going to wrestle with that. Before we dive into all of that, do want to let you know today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new FanDuel customers can get $200 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. All right, Emma, we’ve talked about kind of those off ice issues that Barry Trotz shared in his uh end of the season press conference earlier this week that he really felt like affected the outcome of the team and and let’s remember the outcome not terrific. It’s not been terrific, friends. He talked about leadership paralysis and kind of meshing the old and the new in the locker room and how that affected different things. He also talked about buyin, which I thought was so interesting and kind of the consequences of not finding success. Um, and and I don’t believe by any stretch of the imagination that this was a comprehensive list we got from Barry Trotz on Monday. At least I hope it is not a comprehensive list of what went wrong because I think if Barry Trotz unfurled that scroll, it would roll all the way down the hallway out of the media room and down around the corner and down past the sign and over through the double curtains because a lot went wrong. But I do think it was interesting and I appreciated this about Barry Trotz’s time with us. When you do an autopsy, you of course note like, hey, this is what killed the person. But also in the autopsy on this gloomy Friday day as we talk about this, they also do note like here are the healthy organs and and I think Barry Trots I appreciated that Barry Trotz did say hey there were some healthy things that happened for this team and I think you have to take just a moment and look at that as a Nashville Predator fan so that you don’t turn into Ryan O’Reilly and waterboard yourself this entire off season. So, some of the things that uh Trotz talked about um very interesting. I I judged things maybe a little differently than he did, but this is what Trotz said on like, hey, I know it was a rough season, but here are some things that we accomplished. All that said, uh we accomplished a couple things um through the year. You always look for the positives. Uh we added some young veterans um to our group. Uh we added draft assets and cap space which are valuable quantities to have uh and we added opportunity and a path for our young players. All said uh the culture that we created uh uh I think over time is still good. It’s still a good culture here. Um we we practice hard, we played hard. I think it did slip a little bit. It slipped early trying to make everybody fit in. um the the players that we acquired are the they’re part of the solution, not part of the problem. So, when it comes to positives that Trotz takes away, he mentioned acquiring some young vets for the roster, adding draft assets and some cap space, the opportunity for some of these young players that was created, and just building a culture. When you hear that list, Emma, what do you think is the most important piece? And how certain are you that it’s in a positive place? Um, I think it is important that he and I’m sure a lot of the fan base will not agree with this, but I believe that Barry Trotz is correct in saying that the pieces they added the like the the guys that they added specifically last off season are going to be part of the solution. and not part of the problem. I think that it’s not, you know, there’s all of this, oh, we brought in these new guys and it took so long to figure out how to fit them in and that screwed up team chemistry and these guys don’t fit in. It’s not an ego thing with these guys. As we talked about on yesterday’s show, if anything, it’s the reverse of that. They don’t have enough of an ego to like take over. And so I think that it is important that you know to look at it in the sense that look bringing in these free agent signings and these you know acquisitions didn’t that’s not what I mean yes in a sense it’s what caused the problem but not because of the players themselves and like what they did on the ice or didn’t do on the ice. It’s not like, oh, this player’s performance completely tanked this team this year. I don’t know if that makes sense, but I I think it’s more of just like the collective. These guys are talented. And you and I have said this a lot. It’s not a talent thing. It’s not like, oh, well, you know, Jonathan Marsheso has just completely lost his his mojo and that’s why the Predators were so bad this year. No, it’s just I think it’s just a combination of things. Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head with that because just because something fails, people’s tendency is to say, look at the biggest change. What was the biggest change? Well, you know what we need to do? And I’ve seen plenty of this from different as you know, different people in different, you know, areas of the fan base. You know what we need to do? We need to get rid of Stam Coast and we need to get rid of Marcho and we need to embrace the tank and we need to just because something was the biggest change doesn’t mean it was the biggest catalyst to failure or to disappointment. I agree with that and I think there are a lot of people who don’t and that is why I think this season is going to be really important and early success is going to be important because there is a a lot there are a lot of people who blame July 1st for the absolute disaster and and I mean let’s just be honest not only did the predators not meet expectations they fell so far short. Like I think people would have been surprised if the Predators hadn’t, you know, had had snuck in Wild Card 2. I think they would have been like, “Wow, that wasn’t how we thought it was going to go.” Well, friends, it was even worse. In case you missed it, in case you’re just waking up now, it was even worse. So, I think people tend to blame the biggest change as the biggest catalyst for what went wrong. I don’t think that was it. I don’t um You and I were talking before we recorded. I was like, “Okay, Emma.” He talked about acquiring young veterans. Uh, Michael Bunting, Jacob Brana, Justin Baron, Jordan Osterly, Andreas England. Um, the average age of those five guys is 28.4 years old. And I was like, what is young and what is old in the NHL? Because when I tend to think of young vets, I tend to think of them more on the like 25 26 range. But then Emma and I got to kind of giggling about this because if you think about the veterans, the quote unquote old veterans, they’re on the high end of the veteran age. Like, you know, they’re they’re they’re there are some elder statesmen in the Nashville Predators locker room. I don’t know. When I look at the list of the young vets they acquired, um the one I am most excited about handsdown is Michael Bunting because Michael Bunting came in and he did the things that no one else was doing, which was go to the hard area and stay there and do the dirty work. And so for me, uh that is one thing that I I do feel really excited about. I think that was a really good quote unquote hockey trade that Barry Trotz has talked about wanting to do. I I like that. How important do you think it is, Emma, to have added a little bit of cap space for this team moving forward? Is Barry Trots going to use it? Well, it’s important to have it. It’s more important to use it wisely. And that’s something that I’ve said before which is like that’s great you know and it’s why I’ve cautioned about you know we know my feelings on Justin Baron as a defenseman have been well documented lovely person but oof um I but you know what I had always said even saying that I acknowledge that we may not know like in the immediate term Justin Baron for Alex Kerier I and Montreal far and away won that trade in the immediate term. But I I still believe that it’s like we won’t know for sure until we see like the full ramifications of this because you get Justin Baron, but you also get the cap space. And I think maybe when the trade first happened and people were thinking, oh, Barry Trotz is he’s gearing up for something. He’s clearing cap space. And they thought that move was going to come immediately and it didn’t. people immediately just like well that was a horrible trade you know it’s like well in the immediate term it was but I think that now that you have that space I mean that was one of the biggest criticisms last July 1st when everyone wanted to throw Barry trots a parade for getting all of these these guys the only like criticism well there were a couple one was they’re too old but the other one was oh crap you don’t have any cap space anymore and it’s like Well, on one hand, this is nice because people have been begging for ever like, “Okay, you have this cap space. Do something with it. You can’t take it with you.” So, yes. And and so he did the thing. He went and he was aggressive with it. And the outcome was uh not good. But, you know, just because the the outcome was bad doesn’t mean that the thought process was. And so I think that now, you know, part of me wonders like, ooh, is Barry going to be gunshy with spending now after what happened last year, or is he going to double down and continue, you know, trying to to find the right pieces uh from outside the organization? And so I think, you know, again, having cap space is all well and good, um, but it’s how you use it. I love that you say that. You got to use it wisely. You know, don’t just spend to spend, use it wisely. It’ll be interesting to see what he does with it over the off seasonason. Uh we do want to talk about the one other accomplishment Barry Trotz mentioned, which is uh playing time for young players. Also, Barry Trotz used two very interesting words to describe what was going to guide the franchise moving forward. We’re going to share those two words with you and his vision for what is going to look different come September. Did you know that your Fire TV is also an Xbox? Uh Barry Trotz listed some some positives that came out of last season and I think the one that really should stand out to fans and the one that I think is most exciting is the fact that a lot of young players got quality ice time in the NHL Trotz mentioned seven NHL debuts this past season. The previous season there was one. It was Mark Delgiso, patron saint of the Lockdown Predators podcast and the player Emma made cry. U just it was a moment. They had a moment. But yes, I will I will never never forgive myself. I will never live that down. The world may have a new pope, but Locked on Predator still has the same patron saint, baby. Mark Deliso. I love that. But I do think that that is one of the few areas where PRS fans can go, you know what? So very many things sucked this season. But the one thing that didn’t suck is we got to see some of these players we’ve been talking about for seasons and how they did on the ice in the NHL. Emma, I think that that is a a huge plus. Yeah. I mean, it’s the only kind of plus you can take out of a season like this one. So, I mean, it’s good. I think and even you know I think people it’s it’s tempting to think of that as like well if the veterans you know if the season is lost already then you bring up the young kids and you let them play and you like the only hope that we have is for these young kids to completely show out and look amazing and you know just take over and it’s like well that’s not the only way that playing the young kids can be a success because I think that it’s still successful by learning what you have. Like maybe you think, and I’m just making up like throwing out a name here, but it’s like maybe you thought that Fedorchoff was a legitimate 1C. I’m not saying the Predators think that, but go with me on this. But it’s like maybe you thought he was a legitimate ones. he gets up to the NHL, gets an extended look at the NHL, and you realize, oh, you know what, he might be more of a Tucce or, you know, as an example. So, I think it’s it’s still successful in that you learn what you have. And had the Predators immediately been successful off the bat this year, I don’t know that we would have gotten those extended looks. Maybe you see, you know, maybe they’re still thinking Fedorvetchkov is is the 1C and then when he eventually does come up and he’s not, then you panic. And I don’t know. I again, I think that’s all hypothetical as far as the specific player. But just examples of you know just because they didn’t come up and have immediate success that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s means now you know oh this is not we don’t have what we thought we did in this particular player or group of players and now we know what to address going forward. And the flip side of this whole coin, if Nashville had been outrageously successful and if Emma and I were covering the postseason right now for the Nashville Predators and Nashville still had the kind of draft capital that they have that David Pyle helped stockpile, um the Predators would be going into the draft with that much draft capital at a disadvantage. timing matters. And as much as I think everybody can agree, not interested in repeating last season at all, the timing of it may work to Nashville’s favor in the sense of what Emma were just saying. You know, you’ve got a really good look at Zach Laroo. You know, not only, okay, he can be the pesky younger brother on the fourth line, but now we have some idea of like who could he play with and can he handle top six minutes. The same thing with Yokam Kimmel. We got a brief look at him. Well, we know now what he needs to be working on at the AHL level to earn his spot. Azie Wisblat. We didn’t know anything about Azie Wise Blat. Well, we’ve seen him now. And the Predators are headed into this draft with three firstround picks. You want to talk about not wasting something? The Predators have a much better idea of what they have and what they need because they absolutely sucked this season at the NHL level. They have a better idea. And while it’s unpleasant and we would like to not repeat it, there is a silver lining to it. They know Barry Trotz talked about, look, some things are going to be different next year. And and all God’s people said, amen, Barry Trotz. Okay. uh this is this is what we are going to need. So what is going to be different? This is what Barry Trot said outlining that this year wasn’t the year that we all expected. Um I think you’ll have a much more determined group. I think that you’ll have the buyin of the group u because they have to rely on each other uh going forward. So we just got to tighten that up a little bit. Uh I just think that uh you know when you have a really good culture we just when it slips a little bit you just got to have make sure that our we have really good clarity uh and consequences uh if you know if there’s anything that slips there. So uh that is part part of uh you know the the process of what we’re we’re talking about. We will be better defensively. Uh we’ll play better five on five. uh we will need to to everybody will need to step up. A lot of uh I’ll say a lot of um stuff was maybe directed at our older players last year that they you know they got to step up. They got to step up. Um but we also need more production from our younger guys. They need to step up as well. Okay. Before we get to the two words that he talked about that I think I I want to examine with you, Emma, can I just tell you that I had this moment live at the Barry Trotz presser, then when I play this video back, I have this moment and it’s so ridiculous that I’m going to share it publicly, but when Barry Trotz said, “We will be better defensively. We will be better at five on five.” I had this flashback to the episode of The Office where Michael Scott comes out into the main room and he goes, “I declare bankruptcy.” Like Barry Trotz is going to walk in the locker room the first day of training camp and he’s going to say, “We will be better at five on five. We will be better defensively. We will be. I just love his declaration like walk in that Barry Trotz. Barry Trotz just declared bankruptcy you all and it is going to be better next September. Just I mean, yeah, here’s the thing. I think that a lot of people would have uh bought that last year uh and not after the season that just unfolded before us. Um, I I truly I mean right now because I mean we have to wait for next season, but right now it kind of seems like like does Barry think he can just speak this into existence and it’s going to happen because like how how are you going to be better defensively? How are you going to be better at five on five? Like what are you Barry going to do? Like that’s under your control. Um because he can’t he can’t be like well you know Justin Baron’s not going to commit as many turnovers. I’m sorry I’m ragging on him today but he was front of mind. It’s like well that’s not under Barry Trotz’s control. It’s like well are you going to be better defensively because you’re going to go you’re in going to invest in improving the defense. Like that would be great if you said that but by saying well we’re going to be better. Sounds like what? Are we just relying on the power of a positive attitude? And yeah, like and that’s just going to carry us all the way. Like I don’t think I mean I don’t think that that is going to carry any weight with the fan base anyway, but especially not now. And I’m not saying that that is for sure what he’s doing. But by not being more specific, it does kind of sound like it’s like, well, listen guys, we’re going to run it back with the exact same group that we have and everything is going to be different. And it’s like, right, no, that makes no sense. Like there is there is no meat on that bone. Yeah. Like I it’s like Barry, are you okay? Like did you see what just happened this year? Um, so it’s like I want to believe that because he acknowledged the problems that he understands that he has a hand in fixing them and and he did take some of the blame, you know, when he was talking about Andrew Brunette uh saying like I I gave him, you know, a difficult hand, which in many ways is true. Yes. But I, you know, it’s like, okay, well, if we’re going to be better at five on five, it’s like part of me wonders. It’s like, oh, Barry, are you not are you really not going to do anything? But part of me wonders, does he not want to get too specific because he doesn’t want to paint himself into a corner and then have to explain to fans later because we know Barry Trotz is an open book sometimes to his death. And so, yeah, I just I really wonder like how I just don’t know. I know. It’s very hard not to be like, “Time out. Time out. Time out. Time out.” How? How? I love it. I love the enthusiasm. I love the declaration. He declared bankruptcy. We love the enthusiasm, but no one is going to No one is buying what you’re selling after the year that we just had. like no, you can’t really get by anymore on the the good vibes and the good feels and ooh, we’re going to bring this fast, you know, highpace brand of hockey that’s going to get people out of their seats. Like the vibes are gone. Like all of those vibes are gone. They’re completely dead. So, I think that you now if you’re Barry Trotz, you realize that you can’t really like the fan base, I mean, if he hasn’t figured that out yet, is not going to be as forgiving uh as they were when he first took over as GM. So, I think that he needs to be prepared to answer for that. Yeah. two words that he used that I thought were very interesting and and seemed intentionally chosen because they’re not words you use in everyday conversation when he talks about what’s going to be different. We are going to have clarity and we are going to have consequences. And I got to tell you, I was kind of like, huh, interesting clarity. I think you look back now and I’m like, I can see just straight eye test. Ignore the stats. Just go with straight looks on faces in the locker room. Emma, clarity seems like something that will be necessary moving forward. I don’t know that anybody quite knew what was happening to them this season, but consequences. Interesting to me. I I I wasn’t 100% sure what to take away from that. Uh, another part of this long conversation that Barry Trotz had with the media was about accountability. And so I don’t know how much, you know, how much of that ties into, you know, holding veterans accountable, holding players accountable. I just think it’s interesting that the two words that he chose that are going to help change things moving forward are clarity and consequences, Emma. Yeah. Like you said, of note. Of note, perhaps. Uh but again, it’s like who are there going to be consequences for? Is it going to be the veteran players? Is it going to be the coaching staff? Is it going to be Barry Trotz holding himself accountable and you know like self-imposed consequences? I don’t know. Again, it’s vague and it could be, you know, GM Barry Trotz just growing up right in front of our eyes and realizing that maybe he does need to kind of be a little bit more vague with with some of the things that he says. And so it’s like it leaves some up to the imagination about like okay consequences and then it allow I mean the danger in that though is people are going to read into that what they want to read into it. So maybe, again, totally hypothetical, maybe Barry Trotz is saying consequences, and in his head, he’s thinking consequences for the veterans when they underperform. But fans are hoping that he means consequences for Andrew Brunette, who’s going to be on a short leash if they don’t perform. So then if that doesn’t happen, then the fans are going to be upset even more. So, again, not that Barry is necessarily beholdened to the fans as much as fans may think he is. He’s not. Um, I just I don’t know. Part of me is like, I get why you’re being vague, but the other part of me is like, you’re going to have to answer for that later. Yeah. We are going to be watching for clarity and consequences all off season and next season, you all. And we may just have to start like a little chart, some sort of visual for clarity and consequences just to see. Coming up, uh there is of course no Nashville Predators in the postseason for the NHL in case you were wondering. Uh but you can see some of your favorite Predators players on the ice starting today. We are going to tell you who they are and how you can catch them playing. Coming up, today’s episode’s brought to you by FanDuel. Nashville Predators involved in all of zero of it, friends, in case you were wondering. But if you are missing some of your favorite PRs players, you can watch them back on the ice. Men’s IIHF Worlds kicks off today and some Nashville Predators players are going to be on the ice for their respective countries. You know, they love representing their countries and this is just a taste of what is to come with the Olympics next year. Uh Ryan O’Reilly has stepped away from spearing himself or waterboarding himself or looking in the mirror and listing his many sins. And he is playing with team Canada, coincidentally, Emma, under assistant head coach Andrew Brunette. How about them apples? Yes. Yes. Uh glad for him that he is you know it’s something that you know when they talk about for like sports with with you know at risk youth it keeps them off the streets. It keeps them I’m like this is going to keep Ryan O’Reilly from you know waterboarding himself after the season that was. So, I I’m glad that he’s I’m glad that he’s found that outlet and I hope that team Canada, for his sake, I hope that team Canada experiences some success this year because may bring you joy. May it bring you joy. Ryan O’Reilly, Michael McCarron, and Brady Sheay are playing for Team USA. As an aside, friends, when Peggy signed with the Nashville Predators and I saw the way his last name was spelled, you could have bet the farm. I would have bet everything I had that that man was not someone who would play for team USA. But yep, Brady Hi, is Was he born? He was born in Minnesota, right? Minnesota or Michigan. Minnesota is from Minnesota. Yeah. So, they’re representing Team USA, Michael McCarron. It’s funny like with with uh names in the NHL because there are so many foreign players, you assume that things like certain names are going to be more exotic than they actually are. Like I remember the first time I met when I was covering the Hurricanes and the first time I met Alex Nadulkovich and he got called up from the and I I met him. I’m expecting some kind of like thick accent to come out. And he’s like, “Hey, how’s it going?” And like perfect English. And I was like, “Yeah.” I looked him up. He’s from Ohio. And I was like, “Okay.” Nadulkovic from Ohio. Sure. And then even my first season with the Predators. uh when they signed uh John Leonard who is the older brother of uh Capitals rookie now Ryan who’s been you know in a lot of headlines uh even though he was healthy scratch last night but um anyway that was his older brother and again because we are so used to these foreign names in the NHL I remember a lot of us thinking like okay so we’re calling up a John Leonard like, okay, yeah. And we’re like, nope, it’s literally Leonard. It’s Leonard to make it fancy. But it’s like, we’re all just assuming it’s something more exotic and different than it actually is. And it’s like, oh, no, it is the most generic white person name ever. Just John Leonard. And it’s like, oh, John Leonard. I wonder where he’s from. Yeah. Is he French? Yeah, see this is the text that I sent Emma last night during one of the games. This is poor poor Emma is working. She’s working you all. She is doing a live playoff frenzy show for the hockey news. And this is what this is me blowing up her phone. This is what I say. I mean this with total respect to his heritage, but truly one of my biggest pet peeves in hockey is that the dude’s name is spelled R O Y but is pronounced Wah. Like that’s not real and I hate it. My name is spelled an correct pronunciation is queen. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. Poor Emma. Hash pray for Emma. She works with Ann. Yeah. Brady Shay team USA. do things that I originally would not have put together. If you were curious and you’re like, you know what I miss? I miss a good Nashville Predators goalender friends, team Finland, Jussi Soros and Eustace Anin. Love those boys, the two juices. And for me, for my own personal Swedish joy, Philip Forsber is playing for team Sweden. So, you know, I will be cheering for team Sweden. If you want to check out the games, uh they’re going to be kind of all over. NHL Network is going to cover a lot of them. So check out there. ESPN Plus will have some. IHF TV will be covering them there, too. I don’t know if there’s a subscription there or not, so look into that. But Nashville Predators, some of the guys, they are back on the ice, back in action, hoping to cleanse their pallet after the season that was. Uh, the other thing I want to shout out, Milwaukee Admirals back at it tonight. Elimination game number two. They survived and thrived quite frankly Wednesday night with a 6-2 win on the road in Rockford. got to win tonight to take this back to a game five back in Milwaukee on Sunday night. So Milwaukee Admirals tonight flow hockey FLW or Lo pronounced flow hockey. It’s Friday, y’all. Just we’re going to need you to go with that. It’s just like Roy pronounced Wah. It’s like it every time I scan they zoom in on Roy and I’m like go to the guy who committed the penalty. What? like this cameraman sucks. No friends and sucks. Anyway, you can check out your favorite Nashville Predators players uh on the ice and it’s going to be great and hopefully they are going to be playing with clarity and consequences and find some success because that’s what we are looking for. Emma, before we log off on this Friday and wrap up this week here at Lockdown Predators, will you let everyone know where they can find you and your work? Yes. Uh first of all, an does not suck. Just want to be on record saying that. Second of all, uh what does suck is fire alarms happening elsewhere in my building right now, which is why you might hear upper management uh being vocal in the background here. Um yeah, she’s just she’s not happy. So, we’re just going to wrap this up right now. And you can find me on social media at emma Lincoln and you can find all my work at the hockey news. You can find me on social media at ank_mama on ice. You can find my work with penalty box radio as well. Next week we are going to dive into draft information.
