Its Not the Pitching That is an Issue with the Milwaukee Brewers

I feel a lot of the blame for the Brewers inconsistent play this year is heaped upon the pitching staff when it it’s the offense. Some of the guys were counting on aren’t doing their job and you got to point to the off season. The Brewers did not do a good enough job in the offseason. I figured we’d be this was going to happen. We’ll get to all that coming up next on this edition of Lockdown Brewery. You are Locked On Brewers, your daily Milwaukee Brewers podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Anytime the Brewers lose a game, I feel like, well, the Brewers will come down on Trevor McIll. Like, uh, he allowed the go-ahad run, the game-winning run on Saturday. And you go to Twitter and it’s like I’ll go to my DMs and it’s like, well, Miguel, he’s not the same guy he was last year. He’s not this. He’s not that. How about the Brewers scoring some runs? And this is the same problem the Brewers had last year and the year before that. And it’s been a constant with these guys with the the offense with these guys. I feel like the pitching is holding them in. If the pitching did not hold in, uh, where would the Brewers be at this point? We’ll get to all that coming up next. Check for Lockdown Brewers, part of Lockdown Podcast Network. We are your team every day. This episode brought to you by Monarch Money. Take control of your finances. Monarch Money. Use the promo code lockdown MLB at monarchmoney.com. 50% off your first year. Yeah, where would this team not be without some of the guys stepping up? Yeah, there wasn’t a there weren’t long starts this weekend. Kintana did not have a long one on Friday. Tobias Meyers, who we’re going to get to. Same with him on Saturday. and Chad Patrick. But Chad Patrick, you know, he’s pitching in the majors and putting in we’re putting him in the starting rotation for the first time on a team that’s coming off a division title. He’s doing a darn good job. And he didn’t have the best of outings, but I thought he kept this team in the game. How about scoring some runs? Two runs, three runs on Saturday, two on Friday, three on Saturday, and then on Sunday, they score four runs to win. I feel like the Brewers, I mean, they were living on the edge all weekend long putting pressure on the pitching staff, hoping and praying the pitching staff, and I thought the bullpen did a great job this weekend. I really did. I thought the bullpen did its job. How about giving these guys some support? The Brewers exhausted their bullpen over the weekend. And I thought Tyler Alexander coming in and getting him five outs on Sunday when this is a guy who I don’t really count on much to be honest with you. He’s a 30-year-old journeyman and he came in and when he came in on Sunday I thought, “Oh boy, here we go.” But he got five big outs. He bridged the gap to the rest of the bullpen and that allowed Miguel to go one, two, three in the ninth inning and make all those Miguel detractors out there. very happy at least for another 24 hours. But don’t blame the pitching staff. The pitching staff has lost all and I’m not I don’t want to use this as an excuse, but it is. They’ve lost several starters, preferred starters to injury, okay? Some of the right when camp started, you go all the way back to DL Hall and working your way through that all these guys who have missed some time. Okay. And Tobias Meyers, as I said, we’re going to get to him a little bit. hasn’t been great. I don’t think he’s been bad as people want to say, but this is what the pitching staff, I think, is holding him in. Chad Patrick doing a heck of a job out there in his eight starts, I feel. All right, Freddy Peralta, same thing. Uh Kintana didn’t have a great one on Friday, but kept his team in the ball game for crying out loud. But look at this. Look at these batting average. This is pathetic. This is pathetic right here. the the what these guys are doing offensively and again on Sunday terrible with runners in scoring position once again stranding guys on base putting pressure on the pitching staff but not coming up with a clutch hit. Uh Freelick is slumping. He’s down to 279. Cheerio cut him some slack again. He’s 21 years old. Second year in the majors hitting 260 but he came up with a big hit on Friday night trying to keep his team in the ball game. Yelled two hits on Sunday. He’s up to 208. think Christian Yelich, I’m gonna say it. I think he’s passed his prime. Yeah, I I really do. I’m gonna be the first guy to say I think Christian Yelich has seen better days. Sure, he’s going to have a game like he did. Had a big hit in the eighth inning on Sunday. Hit an early home run when him and Contrarus went back to back for a second time this year. But still, I think Yelli has seen better days. I know it’s going to draw some heat out there, but let’s be honest. Let’s be honest. you know, without we’re going to take the gloves off with the with the Milwaukee Brewers for a change and Yelli’s on the downside of his career. I’m convinced at that at this point. Contrarus, he’s playing through a hand injury. 237. I cut him loads of slack. Loads of slack. Terra, he’s coming down a little bit. Did we ever think Tang was a 330 hitter? No. He’s down to 296. Hoskins is the one guy on this team I feel like is is overachieving. Yeah, the power numbers. He’s only got four home runs. He said 275 big RBI single gives some insurance there in the eighth inning. How many times has Hoskins done that? He’s done that plenty of times. Delivered for the Brewers. Then you look at, you know, T Collins playing in the outfield. He’s given all he can with 230 and they got injuries out in the outfield. But Collins when he’s out there, I think he’s doing a heck of a job. Isaac Collins, Jake Bowers batting 265. It’s about 65 points, 66 points higher than he did last year. And then you got Ortiz, you know, I mean, we’re not going to spend this podcast blasting Ortiz, but he’s just having a terrible year. 176. And then Durban rookie 203. Uh they’re c and then again part of this is the Brewers the front office put the Brewers in a terrible spot this off season. I think they got a little fat in the offseason and thought well we could just we’ll go we’ll go with we’ll give um Ortiz the shorts stop spot. We we think enough of him to give Ortiz the shorts stop spot with no backup plan whatsoever. I feel like the the third base spot with Dunn over there and with Vinnie Capra, they grossly underestimated the third base spot. And now Durban is over there as the everyday third baseman, but you have nobody else to turn to at 203. Their left side of the infield absolutely killing them. And I and I said this in the offseason. Go back to some of those podcasts. I knew this was going to be a problem. I didn’t think Ortiz was going to be like this. I thought he’d be better than this. I didn’t think it’d be this bad, but I knew third base was going to be a problem. And finally, cutting Vinnie Capra on Friday. I I’ll never understand how that guy got such a long rope, but those just putrid numbers. Nothing against the kid at 28 years old, but what were you going to get out of him? What did What did you think was going to happen there? Okay. I I don’t get that at all. I do not get what the long rope was on Vinnie Kapra, but it’s the offense. It’s the offense that has been a problem on this team. It’s not the pitching. It’s not the starting pitching. It’s not the bullpen. But then again, if you look at the numbers, look at these numbers here. The Brewers are averaging 4.6 runs a game. That’s 12th in baseball. Boy, is that deceiving. 12th in baseball. Their ERA, again, their pitching, I think, has been pretty good. 20th in baseball at 4.27. Her clutch hitting sucks though. I mean, I hate to use that word, but it really stinks. It’s just awful. Awful. Uh, and the Brewers, thank goodness they just just like when the Cubs last weekend, the Brewers were thankful to win that final game against the Cubs to avoid the sweep last week. And the Brewers against a mediocre Tampa team came back and won Sunday to avoid getting swept. In three games, they could have won, but they didn’t do it. They didn’t do it. I feel like last year when they had that fourleaf clover in their back pocket, they would have won at least one of those games Friday or Saturday. Somebody would come up with a clutch head and won those games. Those that same magic that they happened last year is not happening either. Pat Murphy will say this team does not have the edge and maybe that is it. Look at these batting averages. as you go up and down this lineup and the only guy who’s I think overachieving offensively is Hoskins. Although the power numbers not quite what I wanted, but Hoskins hitting 275. The guy’s never hit more than like 259 for his career. So, pretty impressive. Hoskins, he’s the guy who’s coming up with the clutch hits. How many times this year has he come up with a RBI base hit to left field to tie or put his team ahead or give his team an insurance run like they did Sunday? Reese Hoskins not getting heavy but shortening up that swing it seems like and delivering base hits and Tobias Meyers for some reason Tobias Meyers there is a short leash with that guy and I don’t I don’t understand why what is going on with the short leash. We’ll explain coming up next. Chuck Freeman here on Locked on Brewers. Lockdown Brewers part of the lockdown podcast network. We are your team every day. Monarch Money. Yeah, a little surprised on Saturday when the Brewers sent Tobias Meyers down and I don’t think it’s going to be for a short time. I think this is a little roster adjustment, little roster massaging that is Brandon Woodruff is going to come down. We knew somebody was going to leave this rotation, but Brandon Woodruff appears to be the guy. Now, Meyers has made four starts since being activated. Started the year on the injury list with the oblique. Uh, and Woodruff is is likely going to start Saturday, but the Brewers have to activate him on on Tuesday because of some quirky rule. Well, it’s just a rule. They have to activate him off the injured. They have to restate him off the injured list on Tuesday. So, in the meantime, they called up Pigaro and he’ll take the roster spot of Tobias Meyers. Now, Meyers, you know, the the Brewers are saying right now he’s not consistent enough. This is what this is coming from Matt Arnold, the GM. Myers is not consistent enough. I don’t know. Give the guy a break. He’s coming off an oblique injury. They pulled him after a second start after two innings when other guys they give long ropes to the Vinnie Capras. How many pitchers have they given long ropes around? Do I even have to go down the Elvin Rodriguez road again? Yeah, Tobias Meyers. I don’t know. Why are they messing with him again? He got pulled in his second start. Meyers got uh little control issues in just his second start and they yanked him after two innings. I don’t know. I hope Myers is back soon. He’s 1 and0. A 3.86 earn run average. probably doesn’t show the whole details and maybe some of his inconsistencies, but I don’t think he’s been all that bad. I I don’t watch Tobias Myers and say, “Now, is he as good as he was last year?” No, but he was incredible last year. He’s a pitcher of the year for the Brewers and now they’re sending him down. Well, hopefully it’s going to be for a short time because the Brewers need Tobias Myers to be good. But on the other side, I’ll say this. those guys who are late bloomers and who have been career minor leaguers and bounced around the minor leagues like Tobias. I always look with an eye, you know, do the old side eye thing. Is that really the which Tobias Myers is it? The guy who’s been laboring in minors or the Myers we saw pitched lights out last year from the very beginning, his very first start when he got called up in May. So, I think there’s part of that that yeah, what is the real Tobias Meyers? I was not gonna put all goal in on Meyers. Although at times he pitched like a number one starter last year, but we’ll see. I don’t think he’s all that bad as he didn’t deserve a trip down to the miners. But again, might have been the short straw thing massaging the roster a little bit. Needed to make room for Brandon Woodruff and then Perl extra man an extra man in that bullpen because they exhausted the bullpen this weekend in all three of those games. Kintana, they used what six guys on on Saturday after they pulled Meyers after after four plus innings. And then Chad Patrick did not have a long start and they used multiple relievers on Sunday. So Eddie um Edwin Pigro who um was pitching better not a triple AAA. I liked them better two years ago, not as much as Pamps. Uh, did I say Edwin? Elvis Pierro. Edwin. I got Edwin, Elvin, and Elvis all mixed up. This is Elvis Pierro called up. I saw a little interview that was done on Adam McKelie’s Twitter today. Uh they were talking with Matt Arnold and uh they say Pagarro or as they called him Peggy. Didn’t know what his nickname you know those you know baseball everybody’s got a nickname. Peggy. I was like who is Peggy? Oh Pagarero. Never heard of it before. So Peggy apparently has been throwing better at Triple A. All right. As far as this weekend, yeah, took lost to a three, but the Brewers had the best record in baseball on Mother’s Day. 36 and 22. If only every playoff game could be played on Mother’s Day. The Brewers would be World Series champs if every day was Mother’s Day. And you know what? Every day should be Mother’s Day, right? And happy Mother’s Day if we even have any mothers who listen to this. I don’t I haven’t heard from many ladies lately who watch the Locked on Brewers podcast, but if you are a lady out there watching this podcast, appreciate you joining us. But lately, it’s all I’m hearing from are the fellas. I haven’t heard from from many ladies lately watching the Lockdown Brewers podcast. If you catch us wherever you catch us, drop me a line. Let me know you listen to the podcast, but and a happy Mother’s Day to you if you are a mother as well. Um, apparently we have 11% of our following lady followers on Lockdown Brewers. 11% of the audience. I never hear from him, but apparently according to all the analytics, 11%. Uh, yeah, I thought of Yuribe pitched well. Had a help from a friendly double play ball and a line drive that was snagged by Terraang at second base. But Urebe again I think is doing the job working his working more and more in trust from that Brewer brass and maybe one day at closer. I see I see closer stuff out of here. But again I want to reiterate what I said in the beginning. Don’t blame the pitching staff. Score more runs. One crooked number in a three-game series against Tampa isn’t good enough. I mean Drew Raspersonson was pitching for we remember him, right? Drew Rasperson was pitching I mean, is he any good? All right, we come back, we will u see where the Brewers are in the standings after this weekend, dropping a series. Look ahead to the Cleveland series. And how good are the Guardians? That’s next here on Lockdown Brewers. Wonderful Pistachios, a great sponsor of Locked On Brewers. Tell you about them here in a little bit. Uh, you know, I like I said, if you just watching this podcast or listening this podcast for first time, I follow the standings every day. Every day. I look at the standings soon as the Brewers lose, the updated standings. You could do that online. You know, the, you know, the old days you had to weigh the newspaper the next day. But I I just follow every team. I got alerts set on my phone on how teams are doing. I don’t have an alert for the St. Louis Cardinals, but what has gotten into the Cardinals now? They’re a game behind the Cubs. The Brewer, the Cubs are 23 and 18. And I said last week, the Cubs are approaching going over the 10 games above 500 mark and pretty soon 15. That’s how good the Cubs are playing. Cubs are playing a tough schedule. They got beat two or three this weekend by the Mets and they’re coming back to the pack. The Brewers are lucky the Cubs are not running away with this thing because the Cubs have talent that they should be, but they’re letting everybody else hang in the race. The Brewers are still three games out at 20 and 21. As bad as it looks sometimes for the Brewers, they had a three-game skid ended on Sunday. Still only three games out. We’ll take it. Cincinnati half a game behind the Brewers at 20 and 22. I also checked the wild card. Even though I think the Brewers have no shot at the wild card because they have to leaprog too many teams. The Brewers right now are fourth four games up in the wild card and they’re leaprogging a lot of teams there. So, I don’t really want to look at the wild card. It’s division or bust, I think, for the Brewers. All right, the pitching matchups. Cleveland, Cleveland’s got little twoame skid. They got beat two or three this weekend by Philadelphia. Uh nothing great about them really. Team batting average at 238. Steven Quan, the one guy who’s been hitting for them, uh batting 327. I think it’s up to 333 now. 333, 331. I saw his batting average before the game. He was batting 327. Jos Ramirez is always a home run threat at the plate. They could be explosive. They could be explosive. I was watching their game with the Nationals last uh Thursday, I want to say. Wednesday or Thursday or Tuesday. Scored eight runs in a game. Might have been Monday as well. I feel like they’ve been putting up some big numbers in some of their games this year. Explosive. Um, Emanuel Class, their closer, who I felt was the best closer in baseball, he’s not having a great year at all. But I thought going into the year, finishing up last year, Class A was the best pitcher in baseball. He’s not have he’s not backing up that argument this year. In fact, far from it. Uh, the pitching matchups, they’ll face Dan Lively on Monday. 505 first pitch, by the way. Uh, he’s 2 and2, a 3.46 earn run average. Logan Allen goes on Saturday or on Tuesday and then Gavin Williams on on Wednesday in the afternoon wrap-up. The Brewers three-game pitchers. Freddy goes in game one, priest in game two and Kintana comes back in the uh afternoon getaway game on Wednesday. And then the Brewers come home on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday after the six-game road trip. They got Minnesota coming up and Brandon Woodruff, it looks like he’s going to start on Saturday. According to the reports out there, looks like Woody is finally going to make that first start on Saturday. They’re clearing roster spots available for him. Got to be activated on Tuesday, barring a setback, which he has had none so far. Looks like Woody on what? They’re giving away a cribage board on Saturday. Giving away a cribage board on Saturday. First time the Brewers ever done that. Never played cribage in my life, but it looks like a pretty cool piece of hardware there. I’ll I’ll I’ll take it. Just don’t know. Just never played it. And I think it’s a Wisconsin tradition to play cribage. I think everybody in Wisconsin knows how to play that and KASA and all that. I’m just not a card player. Not a card player whatsoever. But it’s a pretty cool thing. The Brewers wouldn’t be giving those things out if there was not a demand for something like that. So, that’ll be Saturday night with Woodruff pitching and they’ll be giving out the cribage boards. All right, that’s going to do it for Lockdown Brewers. Appreciate you all for doing it. And by the I was watching one more thing. I was watching the u Tampa Bay feed of the game today. Somehow was I couldn’t get the Brewer feed. I was watching the Tampa Bay feed on the broadcast. So, I I did not see in the Brewer broadcast, did they show the Bill Hall pink bat home run? Did they show that at all? Because I feel like every Easter Sunday they show the Brewers winning in 1987 to go 12-0. And then another tradition is on Mother’s Day, they show the Bill Hall home run from 2006. Did they show that on the Brewer broadcast? Again, I was watching the Tampa Bay feed. They didn’t show it on there, but Bill Hall going yard in 2006. I would have guessed they would have showed it. You know, we don’t have many monumental days in Brewers history, but that certainly was. I remember being at that game with my kid who was nine at the time, and I was showing him how to score. It was the first game he uh I taught him how to score. We’re sitting in the right field grandstand as it was way what the section well was um the 200 section right field good seats but I was taught my kid how to score that game and I cannot find the score the box score the score sheet at all I know I know it’s around here somewhere all right I’m rambling time to finish off hey everybody you get our podcast on Google Spotify Apple wherever you download your audio podcast where the number one viewers podcast on the internet because of you great Brewer fans out there. The Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff kept the team in all three of its games this weekend in Tampa. However, why is it the fans seem to rail on the staff- after losses.. When-in fact-its been the offense that has been brutal. Why the short leash with Tobias Myers this season? and now he is headed for the minors. The road trip continues with another American League opponent- the Cleveland Guardians on Monday Night.. We will get into all this on this episode of “Locked on Brewers”

  1. I realize that we're a small market team, but guys like Capra and Elvin Rodriguez don't belong in the show. The front office needs to find us major league level players, especially for a position like third base. I already like Durbin, but we have a big hole in our roster. Our offense is lukewarm and inconsistent. I wonder if Perkins would have any effect on this team if he was healthy?

  2. I disagree. The first 2 games in the Rays series was on the pitching. The Rays are offensively challenged. We had a rare series vs a team that was even weaker than us. 5 walks per game. 6 of the 7 Runs we gave up were gifts.
Jedi is correct. Stearns did nothing to boost our bench. And blind devotion to Elvin R when we have so much better in the minors.

  3. Lol, I guess I'm a "Megill detractor". Happy he finally came through on game #3 in TB. But, do I have confidence in Megill if we're up by one or two runs in the rubber game during the post season? No, I don't. Anyone else confident in this scenerio?

  4. Way too many .200 and below hitters. The pitching has been..i think less good than you say based on the 20th metric, but not terrible. Lot of that can probably be explained by a few horrificly bad starts from elvin or tyler alexander, priester. The games they keep them in, we can't bat guys in. Lot of holes for this team this year

  5. Sadly, we're a small market team that can't afford to retool every year. We can blame the players union and MLB for that. It's a development year and if we make the playoffs too, all the better. Waiting for the next wave of talent to come through. As for the McGill complainers, we wouldn't be better off with Williams, as he's already gotten demoted. Somebody does need to reign in the young Chourio and get him to be more disciplined at the plate or he'll never get good pitches to hit.

  6. I agree Chuck about Tobias Meyers. I don't understand the tight leash. Let's see if he can work through the control issues. And it's not like he's been awful: 3.86 ERA. There's much worse out there. Plus, he had a great year last year, so you know he can produce. And, I don't care if he's a late bloomer. That happens sometimes, so I don't see the point of sending him down. Put him the bullpen, if you aren't ready to start him.

  7. I predict that when ACE, Brandon Woodruff, rejoins the team, the whole atmosphere in the locker room and the play in the field and at the plate will increase dramatically. Ace Pitcher is like QB1. Mark my prediction and give me credit, Chuck.
