The HARSH REALITY Of The Winnipeg Jets Season
Handshake lines are a timeless tradition in hockey. And whether you hate the Winnipeg Jets or the biggest fan of the Dallas Stars, there was nothing more touching than seeing the respect and care put into the conversations around Mark Shley following the passing of his father and the Jets game six loss to the Stars. Today, we’re going to focus on what happened to the Jets in their playoff run. But before we do that, I just want to send my deepest condolences to Mark, his family, the Jets players, and the organization. The dedication that Shes has for the game is a representation of why hockey is the greatest sport on earth. And the respect shown by the Stars players, organization, and more importantly, their fan base is why this community is so special. Playing in that game could not have been an easy decision, but Mark’s dedication to hockey and his family, it’s all shown just through his passion for the game. So, the hockey community and myself stand with you and send prayers and condolences to your family. We’re all thinking of you in these tough times. It’s always tough to transition from a topic like that, but I think the easiest way is to just dive right into what we’re going to in this video. So, with that all being said, what a roller coaster season it’s been for the Winnipeg Jets. from being labeled as frauds set to miss the playoffs all the way to winning the President’s Trophy after nearly being front runners from the very start of the season. But let’s be honest for a second. I think Jets fans, they’re pretty sick of being a dominant regular season team just to fold in the playoffs. But why does this folding keep on happening? And more importantly, why doesn’t the Jets play from the regular season translate to the postseason if they’re such a deep and well-rounded team? Well, let’s see if we can answer those questions. To start, there were a lot of storylines for the Jets going into the postseason, or better put, things that needed to go right if the Jets wanted to go deep this year. But easily the biggest story line of them all was Connor Hlebuk. Heli is likely to win the third Vzna of his career, two in back-to-back seasons. But despite all of his regular season success, Hlebuck’s playoff performances have been less than stellar. Through the regular season, Hellabuk averaged a 0.925 save percentage and a 2.00 goals against average. Flip to the postseason and you can see the dramatic drop off that he was experiencing going from that 925 to an 865 in save percentage and from that 2.00 goals against average to a 3.08. What’s really astonishing though, if you peek behind the curtain, is Hella Buck’s home and away record during the postseason this year. In his own barn, Hlebuck was 6 and1 with two shutouts and a respectable 903 save percentage. His record on the road, however, was 0 and7 with an 835 save percentage and a 5.72 goals against average. Not exactly ideal for the best goalie in hockey when you needed him most. It is also worth noting that Hellbuck had a 3.85 goals against average and 830 save percentage in the first round, but that did improve in round two where he had a 905 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average. Highlighting that Helluck’s not the only reason for the Jets elimination and even though he does deserve the majority of the blame because he’s such a special player, there are other things to blame when it comes to how the Jets overall performed in this year’s playoffs. Let’s be honest, the bad road record, it’s a combination of a lot of things, and it isn’t all on the goalie. The Jets were solid in the playoffs at Canada Life Center. 6-1 to be exact. Elsewhere, eh, not so much. Winnipeg, which had the NHL’s best 26 road wins during the regular season, went 0 and6 and were outscored 27 to9 in two rounds. Sure, Connor Hllabuk wasn’t at his best during the playoffs, particularly during round one, that stretch where he was pulled in three games, allowing 16 goals on 66 shots for a 758 save percentage. But only nine goals in six games, it’s just simply not enough from your offense. even if Hellabuk stood on his head in some of those games to try and pull off a win. Home ice advantage did allow the Jets to get away with a sneaky first round playoff series win. But with Dallas winning game one of the second round, all they had to do is find a way to win one game on the road and they just couldn’t get it done. So, while I do understand people blaming Hella Buck for this, there are a few other things that we need to look at with the Jets because you can’t not win a single game on the road even if your goalie is playing subpar. When you really look at this Jets team, historically they haven’t been great on the road throughout the postseason. But this year, I feel like there were three major things that killed them. Lack of scoring from their offense, defensive lapses, and of course, subpar goalending, leading to what was the worst record on the road by any NHL team in this year’s playoffs. You can even look back further for this Jets team, because I think it’s important to highlight this. They have now lost every road game of the last two playoff runs. with the last win for them on the road being against Vegas in 2023 when they won 5 to1 going on to lose the next four games and being eliminated. Besides their horrid playoff record on the road, there are a few other things that I think are important to highlight when it comes to what went wrong for the Winnipeg Jets. And these are very specific things that I haven’t heard a lot of people talking about. First off, yes, I know everyone’s dealing with injuries in the playoffs. We’ve been through this before. But I do think it’s important to highlight that the Jets did weather some pretty tough ones from the very start. First off, they didn’t have Eers or Valardi for the start of the first round. Valardi, who missed the final 11 regular season games with an upper body injury, came back in game five against the Blues and from then on just didn’t really make a big impact. Eers, who suffered a lower body injury on April 3rd and then reagravated it on April 12th, returned for game six against St. Lewis. And again, he did have a few moments, but wasn’t as impactful as the Jets had probably hoped. Shley was out for games six and seven against the Blues after sustaining an undisclosed injury in game five. And then we all know Moresy went down with an injury missing most of game seven. And even though they did pull it off against the St. Louis Blues, I’m sure some of these things were still lingering with these players as they entered round two. So overall, just a tough go for the Jets when it came to their roster and their overall health. Related to the injuries is the lack of depth scoring from the Winnipeg Jets. And unfortunately, I think they really wanted to bring their game plan over from the regular season, but just really couldn’t because of all of the things they were dealing with healthwise. Looking at the scoring lineup for Winnipeg, Kyle Connor led the Jets with 17 points, five goals, and 12 assists in 13 games. Mark Shiffley was next up, even though he did miss a few. He had 11 points, five goals, and six assists in 11 games. Gabe Valardi, like I mentioned earlier, he only had one goal in this playoff run, so not exactly impactful when you look at him in the regular season when he had 27 goals. I follow was pretty much a ghost as well. And outside of a few big time goals and moments from guys like Perfetti and Lowry, the Jets, especially on the road, just couldn’t find scoring past their top guys. The last very notable thing that I want to talk about is their special teams. I think that special teams is one of the most important factors to winning the Stanley Cup. And the Jets fall off from the regular season to the postseason in this specific category is pretty drastic. Winnipeg entered the playoffs with the league’s best power play, scoring at a 28.9% rate. It didn’t translate enough to the postseason, though, because they went 8 for 43, only scoring at an 18.6% rate, which ranked them 12th amongst playoff teams. The penalty kill was a bit better. They were ninth in the postseason, killing 31 of 42 for a kill rate of 73.8%. But in the final moments to keep their season alive, the unit ultimately came up short. This drop off, while slightly expected because teams typically see a lack of production from their special teams when the playoffs start, was a big reason for the Jets lack of scoring and their penalty kill. If you look back on some of those goals, they were stagnant and nowhere near the level of execution that we saw during the team’s dominant President’s Trophy run. So, a combination of below average goalending, special teams dropping off, injuries, lack of secondary scoring, and just overall offensive production is ultimately what led to the Jets demise. But cheer up Jets fans. I’m not going to be completely negative in this video because I think there are still some positive things to look forward to if you’re a fan of this team. The Jets are set to have an interesting off season with some decisions to make on potential restricted and unrestricted free agents like Eers, Tanv, Appleton, Valardi, Baron, Kari, Samberg amongst others. And while the Jets are a small market team and a lot of players don’t want to play for the organization for whatever reason, I do think that their playoff run this year and just the overall culture that has been built by the organization has made them a much more attractive destination as of late. Signing Valardi and Dealer should be priority number one for Chevy, but I know that both of these players may not want to stay in Winnipeg. So, there is the other option of maybe offer sheeting players. That could just be a potential route for Winnipeg. Players do take notice of how organizations take care of their guys. And I think Winnipeg, in my eyes, is a team that truly values their players. We’ve seen it with all of the guys that they’ve drafted. They all hang around. They all get good contracts. And I think more importantly, their fan base, they love their hockey team. I think the Jets should be offer shooting guys like Matthew Ny, maybe Evan Buchard, Mason McTavish if you want. These are just some of the top names off of my head. Not sure if they’ll be a great fit, but there are potential players who could work out in Winnipeg. And they should also speak to big players like Mitch Mner. Prepare to give him a big bag if you want to. And maybe it’ll work out, maybe it won’t. But you have a window to compete here. And your fan base, they are locked in and they want a championship. and being complacent with how you build out this roster, it’s just not going to work. Sad ending for the Winnipeg Jets. I really wanted to see them succeed. I love a lot of their players and I think that their fan base, you guys are some of the best in all of hockey. But if you’re a fan of the Jets or just a neutral bystander, how do you feel about their season? Are you disappointed? Do you feel happy based on the expectations from early in the year? Let’s talk about this and anything else about the Winnipeg Jets from this video. Thank you guys so much for watching this one. If you enjoyed it, give it a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel. I have a few other pieces of content right here for you on the screen if you want to check those out. Again, thank you guys as always for watching. I will see you in the next episode.
Today let’s delve into arguably the most surprising story of the NHL Season, the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets completely shocked the hockey world not only making the playoffs after all their offseason changes, but also winning the presidents trophy in a dominant fashion. But even with all their regular season success fans were more interested in how the Jets game would translate to the postseason, which we now know is a bit of a toss up. So today let’s breakdown and analyze the Winnipeg Jets Season and why they had such a sad ending to their story. Subscribe to Jimmy Hockey for more NHL News and Breakdowns.

Jets are like the 'Leafs
The Stars are just great from all levels top to bottom. As a Texas resident I have never had a bad interaction with a Stars fan
I genuinely hate bitching that the refs screwed us over because thats the sort of thing you should be able to push through if you want a cup.
However… the Jets, on top of all their injuries, had the most ass luck on the road.
Obviously round 1 and 2 were pretty different situations, but i want to talk about momentum.
The 1st two periods in game 3 were close. Then the go ahead goal was kicked in, and the Stars came out swinging. Not a good look for the Jets.
In game 3, however, they did play better. Even better then Dallas most of the time. And in that game they got the most bs penalties i have ever seen. Constantly being on the PK kills momentum. I wont deny Otter was absolutely the better goalie, too. But the penalties against the just were just awful. So much so, i think, that even the league felt they made bad calls, because back in Winnipeg they made some calls (or ignored penalties) in the Jets favor for a while.
I was glad they stayed out of game 6 for the most part and let the Boys cook.
The Stars had a strong performance, both goalies played very well, and losing Josh Morrissey in the second was, in my mind, the tipping point between two pretty even teams. Hes a big part of the penalty kill, and playing 5D against Dallas was just too much.
I wish the Jets could have gone further, but there are 31 other teams that say the same thing
The Jets this year have given their fans memories that will last a lifetime – both in the regular season and in the playoffs. As entertainers, that's their jobs, so on that metric – this has been a very successful season
Proud of the Jets this year. Even if they didn't get past the Stars, theyre also a very good and hungry team. It sucks when the best teams in the league are in the same division.
Connor Hellebuyck will never backstop the team to a Western Conference championship let alone a Stanley Cup title. Unless GM Chevy trade him away, Jets fans will continue to waste their money.
Forgot to mention the refs. 😅
0-6 road record for helly! Not 0-7
Florida and Dallas just look like monsters. Heart breaking the way the Jet's went out but hockey is hockey.
The Jets are a good playoff team. They just ran into a wagon of a Stars team.
Only the unseasoned jets fans are up in arms, more mature ones understand the process of growth and appreciate the successes we had such as game 7.
