The effects of the 4 Nations on Vegas Golden Knights players such as Jack Eichel and Mark Stone

The effects of the Four Nations face off on VGK comes your way next right here on the WTF edition of Locked On Golden Knights. Your Locked On Golden Knights, your daily podcast on the Vegas Golden Knights, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Well, hi again everyone. Tony Kordasco and Chris Golick from Las Vegas. I am a longtime sports cer marketing consultant and the host of the Saturday Sportsbeat radio show on Odyssey from 8 to 9:00 a.m. Pacific time every Saturday. He is Chris Golick, the collectibles editor of the hockey news and the owner of Silver State Cards and Sports. Thanks for making us your first listen each and every day. Coming up ahead on today’s show, the Panthers continue to roll. Can the Oilers tie up the series tonight? WTF day and our top story today, the Four Nations faceoff gave us some of the best hockey that we have seen, right Chris? And national pride for players and all of that. A chance to make Olympic rosters coming up ahead for this season. Uh but on the downside, some of the top players were sidelined uh due to effects there that uh were suffered during the four nations face off. And the top names around the league that you look at uh Matthew Kachchuck, he was placed on LTIR afterwards. Defenseman Charlie Coyle um and on the home front for VGK Shay Theodore uh missed time due to that broken wrist. Plus, there were numerous other minor injuries and those who participated in the Ford Nations uh returned home sore and tired, beat down a little bit. VK’s Jack Eel and Mark Stone, they returned to Las Vegas. VK had its first seven games at home after the break and it was kind of peculiar to me. Uh Bruce Cassidy said that Stone and Eel didn’t want any time off but eventually attrition u not having a break there and the physical grind of playing in the four nations I felt took a toll. There’s no doubt it took a toll. Um and you can tell there was a conscious effort after the four nations to manage minutes. Now to be fair this might have just been hey it’s after the all-star break if you have it. It’s time to dial things back a little bit. You look at Jack Eels and Mark Stone’s um minutes per game on hockey reference. You see a noticeable change between February 8th and not long after February 22nd. The eye test will tell you that Mark Stone had a lot less games with 20 minutes or greater time on ice. Same can be said about Jack Eel. So again, that’s on hockey reference under the game logs. Kind of interesting. Again, directly related to the four nations. Maybe, maybe not. Um number of players that were selected to the final four teams. Florida Panthers had eight players selected. Um Edmonton three, Dallas seven, Hurricanes had three, Golden Knights had seven. Ultimately five win cuz Carlson and Petrangelo did not go. So looking at like in the Washington Capitals, best record in in uh the East and everything had nobody nobody wins. Logan Thompson discussion. Save that for another show. We’ve hit that already. So you do wonder in the grand scheme of things, how much did it matter on the fatigue side? Did it matter? Of course it mattered. Definitely mattered. Can we measure how much it mattered? I don’t know about that. On the plus side, you had a lot of good things that did happen. But I’m sure we’re going to drag it plenty in this in thish segment, but Conor McDavid learned how to score a goal in a in a huge moment in his career. A lot of players on that Team Canada roster that have not won a Stanley Cup got a chance to win a huge winner take all. And on the losing side, same can be said about team the players on team USA getting that big big big game experience. So, there’s a lot of positive, but again, the fatigue, the injuries, the the few superstars that did get hurt, it’s just I don’t know. Was the carrot worth was the pearl worth the dive? I’m not sure about that. Yeah, the NHL has to weigh the risk because uh it is kind of risky. And now, as we head into 2026 and Italy in the Olympic Games, uh how are they going to have players regroup and come back? because wasn’t it just a couple of days right right after the four nations that they jumped back into the regular schedule and so you need a little bit of time to recover there as well and I know that there’s a short window for the NHL but they’ve need to figure out a way because it’s very risky to put a lot of these top-notch players um in that in that uh situation the Olympics you’ll have many many many many more players going too this was the four nations uh I what the number is off top of my head, but what 10 plus teams will have NHL representation in the Olympics? Again, I’m spitballing. I don’t know the actual answer off the top of my head. Um, you know, seen players like Dryside are going to get their chance out there and so on and so forth. So, yeah, there’s a lot of moving parts and Italy’s, you know, slightly farther away too than Canada and Boston or uh Toronto and Boston. Toronto and Boston really played the games or no, Montreal and Boston, pardon me. Montreal and Boston is coming from overseas to get back and then you get that short window and everything. So yeah, there’s a lot of challenges and everything that will go into the Olympics. Is that next year already? Yeah, 2026. It’s crazy. It’s coming fast. Life’s coming fast. School year ends already today. Early WTF. Um but yeah, I mean there’s so many challenges and we’re not even talking about what happens on the ice. We’re not even talking about the rigor of uh you know the round robin play and then the elevated play once the knockout stage starts and of course whoever makes it to the final game and the metal games and everything. So you will see similar attrition with the injuries. You will see big names go to LTI. Maybe the general managers want that. I don’t know. Um but you will see big players going on LTIR. And I get it like it’s I’ll tolerate the Olympics all day, right? That’s just international pride and everything. Four nations exhibition tournament. They got a trophy and medals. Okay, fine, whatever. But still felt like an exhibition tournament at the end of the day because nothing is like the Olympics. Nothing is like the worlds that are going on right now. Denmark huge upset over team Canada last night. I mean or yesterday morning probably our time. So yeah, I mean those those tournaments in my opinion matter a heck of a lot more than the four nations, but the four nations had all the all the sexy bells and whistles because of the timing and uh just four nations. So it was the best of the best pretty much. Not again. A lot of players didn’t go, you know, but pretty much the best of the best. It increased international hockey interest. Uh they averaged around 7 million uh viewers per game. 16.1 million I think uh Chris was the final number for the uh USA and Canada. Um but again, I think it had a an impact on the playoff contention. Uh a lot of teams things shook out and Florida wasn’t uh by far world leaders in that second half. They wound up what in third place uh I think right in their division. Kachchuck LT from that moment on. Yeah. And then Brady Kachchuck was injured. Vincent Trochek was injured. U but I never understood right earlier too. And Charlie Coyle. Yeah, we mentioned him. But I never understood why Cassidy, why VGK couldn’t just shut down Eel and Stone. Uh they made it seem as though the players had the option to play or not. And of course, given that opportunity and Eichel’s chasing 100 points, sure, I mean, I’m going to want to play and and the contract is coming up again. Let’s mention that for Eel. So, yeah. I mean, if he hits 100 points, then he probably could get more than 14 million for Oh, I think Eel’s contract is is no pun intended set in stone. Wherever he ends up with whether it was 94 or 102 points, I don’t think that’s going to matter really. The last thing there’s two more things that can really affect Jack Eel’s contract. Although, they’re not going to happen during this one because he’s going to sign a massive extension hopefully in the next uh hopefully in the next about 37 days somewhere in that window. Um he’s going to sign a massive extension. But if he were to win a Khan Smite, if he were to win a Selky or at least become a Selki finalist, maybe that knocks him up a little bit more. But there’s not much a player like Eel can do. You know who Eel is. He’s a great two-way player. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Okay, he’s not a Four Nations champion. Give the guy 100,000 less. Like that. I don’t think that’s necessarily how that’s going to play out. Uh, another player that was injured was Matias Ekholm. Uh, gets sick at the Four Nations, returns to action, and was injured. And I’m not sure if it was anything to do with the effects of playing in the four nations. Uh but I think a lot of these players even eventually eventually wore down. And I can go back and say that could be a result of playing those extra games and the physical grind and the mental grind on top of it and wanting to win for their countries. I can’t imagine cannot imagine all the pressure being put on team Canada and those players. Everything matters. I mean, it’s all it’s all in the stew. It’s the butterfly effect. Everything matters from the four nations. And yeah, I mean, we’ll see. I mean, Ekol should be getting back in there, right? Uh sometime this series, I think. I don’t know. He said he had a miraculous recovery now. So, he was on the ice yesterday. Coming up next, the Florida Panthers go up two games to none in their series over the Carolina Hurricanes. 5- nothing the final shutout win last night. We talk about the Panthers dominance and the Kane’s futility next right here on Lockdown Golden Knights. Do you ever check your bank account and wonder where in the world did all my money go? Welcome back on this WTF edition of Lockdown Golden Knights. Tony Kasco and Chris Gollock reporting. I need a command center for watching too much sports right now because it definitely cuts into focusing on things that are important to me and getting work done and I’ll have a game on in the background. I get caught up in it and then I’m up till 1 and 2 in the morning. Uh don’t forget tomorrow maybe perhaps the Chris Times Chris Jr. show. We’ll see. We’ll see. 14 consecutive losses in the conference finals for the Carolina Hurricanes, which is just an unbelievable. Uh the Panthers, one thing I noticed last night, a massive size advantage. Uh two nothing the series lead for the Panthers as they head back to Sunrise. A physical series. Uh Sam Reinhardt now clipped by Sebastian Aaho. Seth Jarvis rocked by Nico Mikola. Um it’s a very big size advantage for Florida and that’s another team that VGK is gonna have to catch up with. We talk about sandpaper and take a look at what Florida is doing. U Florida I have to point out something here. Florida’s goal differential Chris is plus 25. Plus 25. And that is a record in the NHL. That’s the best ever if they can keep that up. 17 shots on goal only for Carolina. Seven shots through the first couple of periods in that game. And the best part of the game last night. Uh so they have seven shots through uh two periods and like late in the second period the the fans all chanting in unison, shoot the puck. Shoot the puck. I mean what are you gonna do there? You know, I it’s I I would Rod Bindmore. I I feel for him. I mean, what is going through his mind right now? He’s a a proud uh representative of that team, not only on the coaching side, but played for a large number of his career. And now here we are. And you almost I think he got an it got extended recently, too. So, he’s I mean, listen, you’re hired to be fired, fine, whatever. But, okay, here’s a here’s the question. And here’s the angle. Here’s the angle. If the Golden Knights and the I know the answer already because Pete Dbor got fired, but if the Golden How many conference finals losses in a row would it take for the Golden Knights to fire a coach? And the answer is less than Rod Brydemore in the Carolina Hurricanes because it basically happened to Pete Dbor. I mean, yes, it was two conference finals then miss a missed playoff, but still. So, a lot more patience maybe in rally in Raleigh than there is uh in Vegas. But it’s Yeah, I mean, going to the Panthers side, right? big heavy team. This is a very reminiscent of the 2022 23 Golden Knights, at least the way the Golden Knights played on the ice as far as that big and heavy game. Um then definitely don’t look as big and heavy now unfortunately when they in the first two rounds. So yeah, I mean you mentioned copycat league, right? Gold Knights got to find a way to uh put a team together to compete with the Oilers and uh ultimately with the Florida Panthers because they’re not done with this anytime soon. I don’t think Marianne comes back down there. But outside of that, I mean, that team is just so strong. They lost some pieces. It doesn’t matter. They’re well coached. And right now, the Florida Panthers on FanDuel are the Stanley Cup favorite at plus 125. Stars plus 190. Oilers plus 370. That’s that’s the bet right there. Carolina Hurricanes plus 10,000. That’s flushing money down the down the drain, down the toilet. Yeah. Uh here’s something that stood out and you do need to keep up with the set Jones. Let’s keep up with uh Florida’s defenseman 34 points, Chris, in the playoffs. Think about that. Was a great acquisition for him. I know. And 34 points. 13 goals for the Blueliners and every defenseman has scored a goal in the playoffs. So, think about that and the impact that they’re getting a complete performance every night. Yeah. I mean, comparing that to the Golden Knights, right? You got three players who can put the puck in the net pretty well. Petrangelo, Theodore, No Hannifan. McNab is good for a couple of uh goals that catch you off off guard. Hopefully a Hagar bomb here or there and Whitecloud. Whitecloud’s offensive game I think is better than his numbers indicate. He does take some chances and he’s comfortable doing so. Wonder if uh how White Cloud’s game will evolve in the next couple of years on the offensive side. But yeah, I mean contributions everywhere and it’s not just about having the best team. It’s the best team at the right time. There’s luck that goes into it. Kelly McKerman talked about that again at his at his closing press. It all has to align. It all has to align. It all has to align. And uh speaking of align, I guess can the we’ll see if my uh if my perspective on the Stars Oilers series starts to align tonight and if the Oilers get back into it because I was pretty confident that the Stars win the first game and then Oilers come back and win the series. So, we’ll see. Dallas looks to go up two nothing in that series. If they do that, it’s going to be difficult to come back. We saw what happened with VGK. Uh the Stars three consecutive power play goals in the last victory. Um that was just unbelievable. Steve spot in this in this economy with Steve spot. That might be the That’s definitely the line of That’s legendary. That’s legendary. Um do you think we see uh have we heard anything about the goalending situation early in the season, early in the series, I should say? Calvin Pickard might be the choice here if he’s uh back at 100%. I think Grant Fur is going to address tonight between the pipes for the Oilers. Um, you know, listen, the recipe for success for the Oilers, stay out of the ding-dang penalty box, right? I mean, their their penalty kill was bad. And that’s a place where the Gold Knights could not capitalize as well in that series. I mean, it’s important to recognize that the Gold Knights power play was one of the couple of failures that led to us talking about what golf course the Gold Knights are going to be on today. So, we’ll see exactly um if the Oilers can stay out of the box because I mean, again, you look at look at the the game, you know, all scenarios and everything. Oilers stay out of the box, they win a hockey game. They’re up one nothing in the series. And credit the Stars for taking control. We’re not knocking the the Stars by any means. They took advantage of what was in front of them, which you have to do this time of year. It’s that opportunistic moment. It’s that big play. It’s that big circumstance. And again, all the things the Golden Knights did not do. One of the big goals there the other night there for the Dallas Stars. Uh Rupe Hints gets a an assist. Uh so he’s sliding down, gives up the puck as he’s laying down. Uh behind him is Duchaine. And Duchaine takes a shot, first one off the butt of Rupe Hints, reathers the puck and then he puts it in the net. And so I didn’t notice that. I’m watching the game live. About that luck. It’s about that luck. I’m telling you, they didn’t have a really You have to have the luck. You have to have the luck. They did not have a good uh review of that on uh TV. Uh, I thought, you know, for VGK, if they were going to win the cup, this would have been the degree of difficulty would have been far more than it was a couple of years ago. Take nothing away from that championship run, but I just thought the teams were more balanced and and maybe better that they would have to go through to win the cup this year. It was a special run for the Golden Knights. the luck, the injuries. I mean, will they lose two man games in the entire Stanley Cup playoff? It was uh that odd game against the Jets where Theodore Well, why Pahal’s name gone in the Stanley Cup basically. So, injuries were were pretty much trying to trigger me this morning, aren’t you? I know. I know. I know. William Carlson playing for team Sweden right now in the in the Worlds, too. So, there you go. Has he scored anything? Has he hit the net at all? I don’t know. Okay. Coming up next, it is that time of the week. It is what the Friday WTF. We’ll get to that as we return on this edition of Lockdown Golden [Music] Nights. Welcome back from Las Vegas. Tony Kredasco and Chris Gollik reporting. Thanks for making us your first listen each and every day. You can find us wherever you get your podcasts. And uh tonight is the Las Vegas Aces WNBA opener. I’ll be there. So that’ll be good. and check that out. Um, we want to get into some of the WTFs of the day and um, something that stood out and I think you were the first one you I heard it on locker cleanout day and then you accentuated it if you will. My favorite. I don’t manage, I coach. That is such an odd WTF comment for Bruce Cassidy. Yeah, it’s it’s odd. And you know, I guess I don’t think he and again, I think people thought I was thinking it was a negative thing. I don’t think that’s necessarily how I how I took that. You think they’re drawing the lines are the No, I think you’re 100% right on that, Tony, because Kelly Mcrimman was very quick when he first hired Coach Cassidy. Oh, the the roster composition is independent from the coach. I forgot the specific quote, but it was paraphrasing. I’m going to do my job. He’s going to do his job with the roster I gave him. So Bruce Cassidy couple years later, hey, I don’t manage. I’m the coach. So I’m okay with it. I’m okay with it. You know, you can look at it as that. You can look at it as if it’s relationship with the players perspective. However you want to shake out that quote. Um I think people took that a little too far on in on Twitter and stuff. There was like 30,000 views on the tweet and a lot of people thought Dragon Cassidy. It was like I thought it was interesting. I thought it was interesting and I still to this moment I don’t have an exact perspective but I thought it was an interesting observation and if Cassid’s taken a little shot at Mcrimman fine good on him good on him is the boss rolls downhill but you know so at least Mcrimman wasn’t looking over his shoulder like he was at the introductory oh he was watching he was up in his he was up in his perch on and watching uh I’ll fire a couple here right now number one you had what Austin Matthews Mitch Marner, John Tavvarus golfing. They were golfing. They were blowing off some steam. 72 hours after this tragic game seven loss moment of silence. Okay. People are upset that they are living their lives. Like it’s the scene in what fever pitch, right? When it’s before game seven or something like that and Johnny Damon and what Manny Ramirez and all the players on the team are eating with gusto. Like you know the players are human. the season’s over. Like, their obligation to win hockey games is done. Let them blow off some steam. I know Leafs fans are uh, you know, hoping to not die before they win a Stanley Cup, but the reality is these are humans. Let them enjoy their time. So, WTF Leafs fans, slow it down. Uh, WWE WTF WWE Wrestlemania maybe coming back for two years in a row. That’s pretty exciting. So, that’s a positive WTF for me right there. Negative WTF traffic, Tony. Traffic. We went to the We went to um Paint the Ice. Our session was 3:00. Had a dinner at Samurai Sams on the way home. Shout out to Samurai Sams. That was yummy. And then the drive down 215 from uh getting on by like windmill over there was abysmal. It was terrible. We pulled up the map on Google. It was like that deep burgundy red and like that’s an everyday occurrence now in that stretch. So our our city’s getting crowded. their infrastructure lacks and uh yet they keep building more homes and more houses and more apartments and everything. So yeah, WTF old man grunting about too much traffic because our infrastructure city lacks VGK might have to break the bank right when it comes to Jack Eel. Uh we had conversations. It’s not going to end. We’ll be talking about this until perhaps a new deal is struck. And that is the first order of business we have to point out. But where now does that leave the other players? So do you think things could be at six of them get extensions before Jack Eel is what’s what’s going to happen? Riley Smith and Sad Sad uh Olivesson and Pearson and those guys. But keep in mind, right, uh they’re estimating 8 times 14 million. Uh but again that money is not coming from this upcoming season. This would take effect a year from now and I think that’s something that caused some confusion with the WTF fans. Yeah, they’ll probably defer the money for 15 years. Anyway, that’s what I said. I had an up and back uh with someone last night about uh Riley Smith defer the payments 600,000 a year times whatever. Okay, that’s stupid. Um Alen Walsh. Alen Walsh, everyone’s favorite agent to dump on. He puts a tweet out there. Unblocked. You saw a tweet? I got blocked, bro. I He unblocked me. Alan Walsh unblocked me. Honestly, really? Yeah. I don’t know what I don’t know what I did, how that happened. But, uh, you know what his Twitter handle is? I I need to check that out. I don’t know. I don’t know. I’ll look it up, whatever. But he puts a tweet out there about the TV ratings being down for the playoffs, and they are down substantially. And this is a concern. Yeah. Yeah. No, it’s definitely a concern. And need the consolation cup between Carolina and Toronto. No, you don’t need a cons. That’s what fans are craving. You don’t need No, no, no. You don’t need a double C. Um, but going back to Walsh’s tweet here. Listen, I can’t stand the guy. I think he’s toxic in a lot of ways, but I also understand him putting a tweet out there talking about the TV viewership down. And the NHL needs to find a way to continue the excitement, right? Four nations lit the sporting world, not just the hockey world, but the sporting world completely on fire. And now they have to find a way to continue that in the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, especially if and win and if the big markets were to go down. I mean, just imagine if the final, no disrespect, but if the final ended up being Dallas Carolina NHL, I mean, it’d be the worst one of the view worst viewed Stanley Cup finals in the final, I should say, in the history of the NHL. And that’s a problem. But I understand Walsh standing up for, you know, for the the fact that the TV is down because that means the TV deals are down. That means the sponsorship money is down. If all that’s down, if the owners have less money, his players get less money, which means he gets less money. So, I understand Walsh’s tweet. I’m on his side with this one. The and this is on the IHL for still failing at capitalizing on marketing its biggest assets. So, WTF on that one right there. And then just one more. A lot of comments on YouTube. A lot of passionate fans right now. Appreciate every one of you guys coming in. Even uh I think Bowie who tells me coaches don’t matter. I appreciate you just as much and just keep coming on every day to tell us that the coaches don’t matter. We appreciate it. But I want to talk about trades for a second here. This is not and I did this earlier in the week too. This is not a video game. You don’t just The goalies are not trading Noah Hannifan and Petangelo and Aiden Hill and recycling them for elevated talents, players that are better than them. We’re not playing NHL06 here or NHL 12 or NHL 2027, whatever godforsaken year they’re on right now. It’s not as easy as just trading four or five major pieces and starting over. Will there be some movement? Of course. We’ve talked about the possibilities of a Barbashev, a White Cloud, a HEG, maybe something else unexpected. But I think that it’s that’s where it’s going to end. Players in that range and then maybe they do go after a $6 to 8 million asset while keeping enough money for the 26 27 season and the next eight years after that to extend Jack Eel and possibly him have him retire as a Vegas Golden Knights. So, it’s not a video game. It’s going to take time. There’s concerns about where the Golden Knights are right now. if they can open the window more or if the window is going to continue to close even tighter for their current Stanley Cup window. Okay, if we were to say where is the WTF, you just prompted me to think of something else. Maybe another topic, maybe something on the nap napkin, maybe something that we park as they say in Boston. Okay, where would VGK rank right now like in the NHL in the grand scheme of things? Would they be the fifth best team, the seventh best team? Where are they at? Maybe we can do that next week. We’ve got a couple Monday, honestly. Okay, we can try that. WTF from TA Nman. Where is Sammy? Did he move away already? I didn’t see him interviewed at locker cleanout day. So, milk carton. Yeah, just wondering too. And so, why not why doesn’t why don’t they have every player come out and meet with the media? Oh, I like that reaction. Look at that reaction. I mean, there’s there’s one player who will not be talking to the media right now. Leave that one alone. But as far as every other player who is not in the middle of a trial, um why don’t I think they should honestly I think I think it would be good to get that pulse and I want and and I’m not going to drag the Gold Knights because I don’t know how your Rangers do it. I don’t know how Toronto or I don’t know how the major major like Gold Knights are a good market. They’re not a major market. People relax. how the major market teams do it. If they just drag everybody out there, if they put them all in the locker room, I don’t know, but I think more perspective the better. And I think it would be interesting to hear Samson’s perspective on the air. Yeah. Uh, one final one. WTF? This is from Clyde Matt. Uh, WTF, we need grit. We have skill. Florida has grit. We need to give something of value to get some grit. Uh, you can’t win in the playoffs without it. And he’s absolutely right. And that’s in our sandpaper category. Uh, we appreciate every was on was on the milk carton, too. He ain’t having any grit either. Okay. We appreciate everyone tuning in, especially our everydayers. Right, Gollic? We’re going to be back on Monday. Is that what you said? I think so. We should We should come back on Monday. Okay. We’ll be back on Monday. Thank you so much for tuning in wherever you might be. From my man Chris Golic, I am Tony Kardasco. Have a great day. Have a great weekend everyone. We’ll see you again on Monday right here on Lockdown Golden Nights. And please take care. [Music]

  1. The older players who participated in the tournament I'm sure for them was too good to pass up. I understand why gm's are not at all thrilled with these international contests

  2. vgk needs to get younger/buffalo needs to get older, match made in Heaven. vgk needs speed n scorer with Eiche;l/ buffalo needs experienced RD, Whitecloud and Roy for Tuch and Zack Benson, same $ basically. Tuch fast 30 to 40 goals last 2 yrs on lousy team n 1 yr left on 4.75 per yr. Extend… Benson 20 yr old 2 full yrs in nhl high ceiling small but fearless n scrappy like a brady tchakuk. No brainer……….
