πŸ”΄ LIVE: San Diego Padres vs Miami Marlins | MLB Full Game | May 26, 2025 | Highlights

Coming to you live from Southern California baseball coming up on this Memorial Day. It’s the Miami Marlins and the San Diego Padres’s. And now first pitch coming at you right after San Diego Padre. So just about set now getting the nod in this one. Michael King, tell us about him in that sub3 RA. Sigy. Well, anytime you can keep your ERA under three, you’re doing a lot of things right and you’re putting your team in a position to win a lot of ball games as well. and he’s doing tremendous out there on the mound. Every time he gets the ball, you expect him to go out there and dominate. And that’s what he’s been to this point. We’ll see how he is today. Jesus Sanchez, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one and a ground ball to first. cheats steps on the bag and an easy out to start the game. And time now for the Marlins lineup. Singing not a lot of star power in this lineup against the top arm on the mound in this one. Yeah, I might see something special out there on the bump in this one and they definitely have their work cut out for them, you know. But some players, they actually take that challenge of facing an ace and they actually raise their games. Take me for example, not to pat myself on the back, but I did hit 370 off of Roy Holidayiday for my career. Whoa. Hey, how’d you do against Tim Wakefield, Chris? Uh, yeah, like I said, Berg, I I hit 370 against Roy Holiday. Augustine Ramirez, the batter now as he swings and misses for strike one. Next offering is fouled back. A swing and a miss. Michael King the strike out. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Two outs. Space is empty. Otto Lopez the next up for the Marlins. Right through there for a strike. 01’s the count. Two down to ground ball up the middle and that one finds its way through. Nice swing to drive that pitch up the middle. could have easily been out in front on the off speed and pulled off of it, but he was looking to use the big part of the field and he executed his plan perfectly. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. And here is Kyle Sters swinging a foul straight back. [Music] And that one is downstairs and the count even one and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. Lopez off of first with two away. Swings and misses. Struck him out. One left for Miami. And now the Friars will get their first chance. No score. Back after this on the show. Back here at Petco Park and on the hill today, Ronnie Enriquez and Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah, and you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpen mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Fernando Tatis Jr. the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one. With Tatis at the plate, we’re looking at a player that is never going to be considered boring. He’s an electric player that manages to make plays most players wouldn’t consider trying. And he plays the game his own way. It’s a big reason why he’s considered such a fan favorite. Just missed. Next pitch misses way outside. [Applause] Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. [Music] Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Ramirez pulls it in and there’s one away. As we take a look at the Padres’s lineup and it’s clear the most important job they have today is getting to the starting pitcher early and often. No doubt about that. That’s the best way to disrupt a game. But can they do it? Certainly something for us to pay attention to in this one. Partner Luis Arise stands in. Let’s go. And that’s through there for a strike. One and one. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. Edge of the zone for a strike and it’s nothing and two. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit to first. Got him. Oh, we talk about how the ball is coming out of the pitcher hand. the way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Here’s Machado. Obviously a guy who makes good contact, hits for average, but one of the things in today’s game, the value in the fact that he hits both righties and lefties on the ground to third, zips it to first. That’s the inning. Padres’s go down quietly, scoreless after one. Second inning set to go. Now here’s the Marlins DH Eric Wagaman. They’re so reliant on the matchups nowadays, Chris. And it’s huge when you don’t have to sit a guy or platoon him. When you can hit, you know, both sides in terms of pitchers arms, you’re a guy that it’s hard to take out of the lineup. And I think it’s very important today when everything is under the microscope. He steps on the bag and quickly one away in the second. Batting six, the catcher number 34, Liam. And up next for Miami, Liam Hicks on the inside corner for a strike. That one missed. Carl Dixon working the plate in this one. You know, we often hear and talk about umpires being a pitcher umpire, but Boo Dixon maybe a little bit more hitter friendly than most. He’s kind of tight on the corners. So, we’ll see if that comes into play at all in this one. One down, base is empty. Just missed. Fans don’t really understand the familiarity and relationship players and coaches have with umpires. I mean, you see them a lot. Yeah, Boo. They’re all out there trying to do their best and perform at a high level. So when you respect that, I think over time you can develop a relationship with them. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubhouses where they have pictures of all four umpires, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of Small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Two down, base is empty. Here’s the third baseman, Connor Norby. That one in the dirt and that is ball one. Two out. Space is empty. That one not close and it’s two and 0. Foul ball there. Next offering way off the plate. Second inning here. No score. And that one fouled off the other way. He’ll do it himself. Marlin set down in order. No runs, no hits, no errors. We go to the bottom of inning number two. No score. Bottom half of inning number two. And now the center fielder Jackson Merrill. He’s got pop which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field, but he can jump you if you make a mistake. on the ground right side and that chance handled. Tosses to first. One up, one down. Batting the shortstop Xander. And here comes Sander Bogarts. Come on. Fast ball for a strike. Looks like a really good fast ball today. You can hear that catcher mitt popping. Looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one. And that’s outside up the middle on the run. Sends it over to first. Got him. Nice play. impressive backhand stop, but he had a little trouble getting rid of it and had to take that extra step which could have cost him. But good job to make sure he got a good handle on it and he got off a good strong throw to still get the out. Here’s Gavin Sheets now left hand bat. And that’s off the outside edge and it’s one and0. Two outs. They say you’re win. One and one. Come on. He swings and hits a fly ball center field. Snags it on the run. And that is that. We’ll move to the third with no score. Back here in San Diego leading off Matt MV. MV King back to work. Swing and a tapper then rolls foul. Ball one. I got one ball, one strike. The next pitch misses now. Two balls in a strike. Right through there for a strike. drilled in the air out towards right center. Merrill on his way over. He’s got it. And there’s one away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Number 41 stands in here. Leaves that one off the inside. One out. Base is empty. Little bit low. And that gets the top of the zone for a [Applause] [Music] strike. That’s hard hit on the line. No trouble here. Puts it away for the eye. It is two away. Now battle the right field. Jesus. Pesu Sanchez will hit next. Grounded out his first time. Sanchez in his third season hitting lead off in today’s game and he was born in the Dominican Republic. That missed by a lot and that’s ball one. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Here’s a highf fly ball out to center. Merrill and makes the play and that’s out number three. Home half of the third coming up. No score and welcome back to the ballpark. Now here’s Jake Croninworth Croninworth seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way. [Music] Missed with a change up and one and one swing and a miss. Nice change up. Change up right there. Just pulled the string. Next offering miss is down and away. [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Pulled the string on the change up. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Diaz. Here’s Elias Diaz on the outside corner and that is strike one. Still tied at zero. Last of the third. hit weakly on the ground. Norby throws to first and two straight set down to begin the bottom of the third. Good late bite on that slider. Got the hitter out in front. Rolled over on it. Exactly what it was supposed to do. Brandon Lockidge the next up for the Padres’s. That misses and that’s ball one. Now a drag bunt third base side and that’s a foul ball. Two down to slider misses outside. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. Just missed. Fernando Tatiz Jr. in the San Diego on deck [Music] circle and it’s ball four. He missed down low and that’s their first base runner of the game. You can stomach a twoon walk to certain players but with this speed, this guy out there on the base pass, it can turn into two or three bases. [Applause] Tatis at the plate now. That’s ball one. Well, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. That one finds the zone and a count even at one. Cold night like tonight, last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end. Trying to find that sweet spot on the bat. Tell you what, you’re going to be trying to catch things out front. So off speed pitches may be a good compliment to that fast ball. Tatiz weights. There’s the strike. Highf fly ball out towards left center. Sters sizing this one up. He’s got it. And that’s the inning. One left for San Diego and we’re still knotted at zero. And we’re back now. The number two hitter, Augustine Ramirez. Ramirez inside ball one. You know, these Marlins just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches. They’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. And that’s downstairs and outside. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond, and they just keep eating right out of your hand. It’s a leadoff walk and that’s the go-ahad run that could jump start an offense that’s really struggled to score in this one. Don’t want to wake a team up with the free pass. [Applause] Lopez takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. [Applause] six straight outside the strike zone. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. Two and0 to Cal. Here it comes. And that misses as well. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Music] [Applause] There’s the strike. Three and one on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. [Applause] And ball four to a board. Up next for the Marlins, Kyle Stard, the next up for the Marlins. He struck out swinging at his first at bat. Immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. There’s an opportunity to do some damage, but you’ve got to be selective. Make sure you get a pitch that you can handle. [Applause] up the middle and he knocks it down. No throw and they don’t get the out. Base is loaded, nobody out. And now for the Marlins, Eric Wagaban. Golden opportunity right here. Pitch misses inside and that is ball one [Music] [Applause] outside corner for a strike. Hey strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup something. But you’ve got to make some pitches. But if he can battle and get through this, he can earn some points. And a pitch and fouled [Applause] off. Comes a two- two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. [Applause] The 2-2 and that one missing low. Two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. Ball four and a run comes in to score. He’s really gotten himself into a mess out there and now forces home a run with the wall. This inning’s definitely getting away from him. So bases all loaded up. Hicks the next to hit. He’s over for one [Applause] outside with a breaking ball. The opportunity for a huge inning exists right here. Bases loaded, nobody out. But as a hitter can’t be over anxious. That pitcher is up against the wall. Make him come to you. Hit on the ground. Might be two on a Cronin. And a run scores on the double play. It’s always great when you can add a run, but in this situation with the bases loaded, double play is kind of a rally killer. Connor Norby the next up for the Marlins. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. [Applause] Rolled softly, but that goes foul. And foul ball. Sters on third with two out. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Good job at damage control right there. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. And midway in the fourth, it’s the Marlins two and the Padres’s nothing. Back here at Petco Park, John Chami and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Luis Az and a line drive into right field. Sanchez makes the grab and there’s one down. The third baseman number 13. Here’s Manny Machado now grounded out his first time off. You know, Boo, Petco Park seems to be transforming into Machado’s castle. I mean, nobody’s hit more home runs in this ballpark. And Machado passed Adrien Gonzalez for the top spot on the list in 2023. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. One and one. The Marlins leading by two. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Next offering is down low. And that one is inside. Oh, they have had a hard time scoring in this one. The pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking. make sure that they don’t get any confidence. That’s ball four. Tried another sinker but couldn’t find a zone. Thought he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Didn’t offer it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Stepping in for San Diego. Jackson Merrill grounded out his first time up. And that’s outside. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch. Not even close. That one in there. Across the letters. That one to first. And that’s just foul. man at first. One away. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] Swings and lines a base hit into left field. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds at second with one gone. Now batting the shorts stop a dangerous hitter coming up to hit and Xander Bogarts grounded out his first time. Check swing and he went strike one. All eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Runners at first and second with one gone. [Applause] down and moved his feet. Two on, one out. Just missed. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. [Applause] on the ground to first. Could be two. Here’s Lopez for one. Return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. So, no runs here in a base hit. No errors and one left. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the Marlins two and the Padres’s nothing. back here in San Diego. And now the first baseman, Matt Mvis. You know, the first manager to ever win a game here at Petco Park was Tony Gwyn. Yes, Tony Gwyn. They had a college baseball tournament here in March 2004 and Tony managed San Diego State to a win. And that’s in there for a strike and quickly nothing at two. Swings and misses make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Number 41 swings through that one as he comes to the plate for the second time today. Next offering is fouled back. Let’s go fans. Another and that’s three straight strikeouts. [Applause] Back to the top of the Miami order. Jesus Sanchez getting ready to hit. Bowl for two in this one. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Well, on the mound, very efficient, able to produce an outcome, it seems like within the third or fourth pitch of just about every at bat. That’s in there. And now it’s even one and one. Swearing in a miss. Looked off balance that time. Two strike. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. fouls it off. Still one and two. Two outs. The change up missing and the count is even. Two and two. Two strike. Gets a piece and stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Two- two on the way and a foul ball. He stays alive. Misses inside and the count is filled up. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Laser could be trouble around first. Heading for two. He’s there. It’s a two out double. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. So runner at second, two down. And now it’s going to be Augustine Ramirez. He is struck out and he is walked. Not close with that one. Ball one. Sanchez at second with two down. [Music] just missed. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Nick Paveta, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Kick warming up as well. There’s a strike up high and it’s two and one. One strike. And a popup right side foul territory. And that is that a double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. Last half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Marlins two and the Padres’s nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the inning. So digging in now for San Diego, Gavin Sheets. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball first strike. You know, these Padres’s to put it bluntly need to put together more competitive at bats. And I don’t think they’ve lived up to their own expectations at the plate. They really haven’t worked many deep counts or long at bats. And that’s fine if you’re having a lot of success, but at this point, I think it’s time to make an adjustment. And that is downstairs. And the count is three and one. One strike. [Music] And that one fouled off. Ripped to third and caught. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after another line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Croninworth stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Lifted in the air down the left side. Sters coming on. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Up next for the Padres. There comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Ronnie Enriquez won’t go any further tonight. And that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Now pitching for now on the bump. Valente Beoo still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. And now it’s Elias Diaz. First time up he grounded to third swinging a foul pushed off to the right and that will get out of play. The Padres’s down by a pair last half of inning number five and ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Jansen Junk appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Cut on and lifted in the air. Sanchez gets under it, makes the catch and over. out of the bullpen for the Padres’s. Nick Paveta. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. And here is Otto Lopez. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list. That one lined in left field and that’s base hit and the leadoff man aboard. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. Sters. Kyle Sters now at the plate. His splits between April and May there. Yeah, we go beyond just uh, you know, fielding percentage and, you know, what it looks like, but the ability to have range and, you know, close holes that, you know, are normally there against an average defender. But this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness. Lifted in the air right center field. Merrill. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. Now batting the designated hitter, Eric Wagaman. Now Eric Wagaman, Bavetta, 32 years old and he was born in Canada. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Movement in the bullpen. Steven Kolic up and throwing. Reynolds also getting ready. Lopez over at first with one away. Clips the corner and it’s a ball to strike. I got a ball. One strike. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] hammers that one deep left field and forget it. A laser to left. Home run number five on the season. It’s 4 nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. For a pitcher, the odds are in your favor if you keep that breaking ball down. That time he got punished for it. Hitter just did a really good job of staying within himself and getting the barrel to the baseball. Base is empty, one away. Liam Hicks digs in now. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. 10. fast for a strike. Still only one out here in the inning. Swing and a miss. That’s a real nice cutter right there. I mean, this guy can struggle with the inside pitch at times. So, I’d say that’s pretty effective if you can continue to command it on that side of the plate. Got away with that curveball, no doubt about it, and passed right through the heart of the strike zone and he just couldn’t get the bat on it. When you strike out on one like that, that’s when you start having conversations with yourself and they’re not usually very friendly. Connor Norby, the next up for the Marlins. Norby having a lot more success on the road this season. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Breaking ball misses down and away. Last couple of pitches. Breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. the 2-1 [Applause] and delivers outside. Stays alive. Base is empty, two away, but two runs are in. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. hit softly on the ground to third. Machado now the throw to first on the run and that’s a nice play to end the inning. Two-run shot for Miami in this inning. It’s now a 4 nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. And we’re back ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now here is Brandon Lockidge shoots a line drive single into right center. So now back to the top of the order. So the San Diego batting order turns over. Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offense aside for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Now move to first and he’s back in easily. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat, automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. Highfly ball down the left field line [Applause] and a foul ball. And now one and two. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Struck him out looking. Now the DH for the Padres. Louis. Now, this guy’s definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. The Padres’s down by four here in the bottom of the six. Bezo picks over and he’s back in there. that pitch in for a strike and the count one and one. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. You got this. Fouls that off to the left. And we’ll do it again. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes. There’s the ball. Throw to second. Great jump. And that is a stolen base. It wasn’t even close. Runner at second here. One gone. Next pitch is outside. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. And ball forward. Two aboard. Oh, looking for a swing anding miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take. First and second, one out. Here comes Manny Machado. He’s 0 for one. And there’s a foul ball. A little out front there as he swings through it. Sometimes being lucky is a swing and miss. If he makes contact with that pitch, probably hits into a double play. Lockage the lead runner at second. A rise at first. One gone. That one not close. It’s a ball in two strikes. And that’s downed away. Two balls, two strikes. Check swing on the 2- two appeal to first. Yes, he did. That’s a swing according to Eric Summerskill. So far, just one of those days for this lineup. You get a couple of runners on and you’re looking at having a big inning and that strike out right there just pours water on the fire. You look for the next hitter to step up and try to do something. Pick up his teammate and his club. Merrill in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Two aboard, two outs. [Music] San Diego keeps the bat going with a foul [Music] ball. Two on, two outs. That one lifted to left. Sters on the move. Drops into the glove and that will end the inning. Padres’s leave a pair. They trail it here. 4 nothing. Back here at Petco Park now at the plate. Matt MVvis. MV. Pavetta back to work that clips the inside corner for a strike. Ball one there. The one-1 is fouled off. Got him swinging. Oh, that was perfect execution of that curve ball down and in. He gets it out of the danger zone and you really can’t do it much better than that. It’s in the zone the entire way. So, you have to swing as a hitter, but then it just falls off the table and almost hits you in the back foot. Number 41 in the box now. No balls in a strike. Base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. Next offering is in for a strike. One ball, two strikes. Pretty standard high O2 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Catcher tosses the mask, settles under it, hauls it in for the out, and there are two down. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Two outs, space is empty. Next to hit, Jesus Sanchez, one for three. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And that’s him for a strike. One and one. [Music] That’s in there. One and two. So far, all we’ve seen in this bat are fast balls. Look for him to slow it down right here ahead in the count. And that swing. It’s a strike out. Miami down a quarter, but they’re in front four nothing. Now pitching forward, a new pitcher in the game. Jesus Tanoko. He’s averaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season and that’s not where you want to be at all. So, we’ll see how he does here. It’s Xander Bogart now for the Padres. The Padres’s in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Close one. Doesn’t get the call and that’s ball one. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. In this situation, you expect the batters to be a little more patient, possibly take until they get a strike. With that, you don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count. He didn’t right there. ground ball left side and it goes just fouled. The one two swings through that and it’s a strikeout and one away in the bottom of the seventh. So digging in Gavin Sheets. There’s a swing and a drive and that one hops the wall. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in into second and he’s got a double. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that. You have to bury it otherwise it’s not too difficult to get the bat to it like he did that time. [Applause] Now it’s the second baseman, Jake Croninworth. 10 in the dirt. Blocked. Next offering is downstairs. Signs of activity in the pen for the Marlins. Jansen Junk, the young right-hander up and throwing. Quantrol also throwing and he grounds one to the right side. Gets it to first. That takes care of Cronin Worth. The catcher number 17, Alias. Next, it’s the catcher for the Padres’s, Elias Diaz. Swing and a ground ball base hit right field. In comes the run from third to trim the lead. It’s an RBI single. It’s 4-1. Comes through with the RBI. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box. Got a pitch he liked and he got it done. Now a chance for Brandon Lockage. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Diaz the runner at first with two gone. [Applause] Yep, that ball went out. Highfly ball out into left center field. Ramirez makes the grab. That is the inning. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now 4-1. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Pitching for Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Shawn Reynolds. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Here’s the center fielder, Augustinine Ramirez. Augustine Ramirez upstairs, that’s ball one. [Music] Right through there for a [Applause] strike. Ball on a strike in the air. Pretty deep out to center field. Merrill sizes this one up. Makes the grab. One away. The batter number six Lopez the next up for the Marlins swings through that. When you throw a fast ball by a guy like that, I imagine it’s got to feel incredible. Look for him to throw it again at some point. San Diego. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. One down. Base is empty. Outside low. Going to count one and two. Activity in the bullpen. Steven Kolic. the right-handed sinker baller. He looks to be readying himself. [Music] And that one ripped into right. Tatis makes the play. Out number two. Two down. Base is empty. Now here is Kyle Starders. [Applause] First pitch misses. And another ball. Two balls. No strikes. [Music] That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. Little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taken a note. Look for an off speed pitch on this next one. Two down. Nobody on. Foul ball. Breaking ball in there. Got him looking and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Offense held in check there. Last half of the eighth coming up. It’s the Marlins four and the Padres’s one. Now pitching back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Calvin Foch. Well, he struggled quite a bit. So this is another opportunity to get on the right track. He’s given up more than one hit per inning pitch so far this season. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. 0 for three with two fly outs and a strike out. Tatis Junior. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. Next pitch is downstairs. I got one ball, one strike, and that’s outside. [Applause] That one misses. And now three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there. Anyhow, the designated hitter number. So, here’s the Padres’s DH Luz. [Music] [Applause] That one misses. That’s five straight. Ball one. No strike. And that one wrapped foul. [Music] And there’s the ball. Back down. [Applause] Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Two two now. [Applause] swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field and that’ll fall for a base hit. Lead runner to second. So, two on and nobody out. You know, I was watching his rounds during practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that. But so far, I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. Manny Machado to the dish for a pivotal at bat. Now a rip into left center. Get out of town. His second homer of this series. It’s 44. The brighter the lights, the more he shines. Yeah, this guy lives for big moments. And right there made a statement big time. [Applause] Well, he went up there. O looking to do damage. I think he had his sights set on that pitch. He went and got it and circled the bases. Now the Marlins manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Calvin Foscher departs and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. back with a new arm after a quick break. On the mound now, Kade Gibson bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s. Jackson Merrill. Slapped hard the other way, but foul. [Applause] Tied at four. And that one is in the dirt. One and one. Action in the pen down there. Jansen Junk. The hardth throwing righty is up and loosen it. [Applause] Next offering misses and it’s two and one. You get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there’s some base hits. So, very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you, if you will. Got one out to right. Pulls it down and he makes the catch. One away. The batter number two, shortstop, Xander. Now, Xander Bogarts gets a chance to hit. 0 for three with two ground outs and a strike out. And that’s in there for strike [Music] one. Line drive and this might be trouble. The throw to second and he’s into second base with one away as the go ahead run. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. One out, runner at second. Sheets will hit next. This one in the air right [Applause] field. Sanchez makes the grab on the run. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Now the pinch hitter coming on for the Padres’s, Jose Glaciius. And this is a big bat in this ball [Applause] game. Late swing, fouled off. This is a hitter who takes his game to another level playing at night. [Music] [Applause] Strike two. He’s falling behind in a huge spot. Boo. Got to do what it takes to come through. Maybe choke up on the bat a little bit. Spread out those feet. Whatever it takes. And that’s in the dirt. Two strike. [Applause] Foul ball still a one and two count. [Applause] [Applause] breaking ball and that guy he had two strikes on him and he hit him number seven and now the catcher comes up to him Diaz it’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full [Applause] Speed line drive. Fair ball. One runs in. Here’s the throw coming home. Across is the runner from first and they lead by two. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing and there he doesn’t try to do too [Applause] much. Now the left fielder Brandon Lockidge off the mark there. One and0. [Applause] That’s ripped to right down the line. Sanchez pulls it down and that’s the third out. But nine batters hit in the inning, five come around to score through eight full. It’s the Padres’s six and the Marlins four. Now pitching for back now and on the mound a closer Robert Suarez. Well, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the lock down win. So, this game has gone to plan more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. Leave it off for Miami. The designated hitter, Eric. [Applause] That is upstairs for ball one. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. And a foul ball. [Music] [Applause] And that one hit 97 on the gun. Swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. Well, the first batter it’s always a big one for the closer. I mean, you get that punch out, you get settled in, you feel like you’re in command out there on the mound from the jump and kind of prevents any doubt from creeping into your mind or the fielders that are playing behind you that, you know, you’re going to wrap this thing up. Picks stands in now and watches strike one. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. and misses inside. Base is empty. One away here at the top of the [Applause] ninth. Inside corner the knees. That’s a strike. Good fast ball. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Ball two. Two balls, two strikes. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. [Applause] Two down. Fights it off. He’ll see another ninth pitch of the at bat. Do next goes down looking for the strike out. And the Marlins with just one out left. Well, it’s kind of tough right here. Closer comes in and he strikes out the first two hitters. It’s hard not to feel defeated and that this is going to go quickly, but you got to go up there, maybe try to find a way to choke up on the bat, spread out, put the ball in play, and maybe you can extend this inning. Norby in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. [Applause] Sends it to center and that’s going to do it. And that is the ball game. Nice work out of the bullpin for that first MLB win. They turned to him when they didn’t have the lead. He kept things steady and he’s rewarded with the W. And this one ends with a final score of six to four. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shabi. Thanks for joining us.
