If the Vegas Golden Knights sign Mitch Marner, where does he fit in?

What might a VK lineup look like with Mitch Mner in it? The fans want to talk more about the possibility of Marner to Vegas. We’re all for it ahead on Locked on Golden Nights. You’re Locked on Golden Nights, your daily podcast on the Vegas Golden Knights, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Hi again everyone. I am Tony Kardasco, longtime sports cer, marketing consultant and the host of Believe in Vegas the podcast. He is Chris Golick. He is the owner of Silver State Cards and Sports and the collectibles editor for the hockey news. Coming up ahead on today’s show, well the first segment, we’ll be talking about possible lines for Mitch Marner if he joins the VGK. A lot of talk about that. And uh is it worth getting rid of all of the depth and selling it off? We’ll talk about that in our second segment. And the Canes come back to break that record. Their first win in an Eastern Conference final in 19 years. 84 years. In 84 years. We appreciate you making us your first listen every day. We are the only daily VGK podcast. So, Garlic got the fans talking on Monday, potential lines with Mitch Mner, and you posted all that on Marner Monday. We have to make that a thing. That has to be a thing. Every Monday, we’ll have something about MNER, if not more frequently. And of course, uh, you have Eel Mner on the right wing. Yes. Tanner Pearson on the left wing. That, uh, sent the fans to a little bit of a little bit of a tizzy. Why did you have Pearson there? Why not? What What do you need on a line with up to 200 points when you have Eel and Mner? You need someone who can just get to the get to the soft ice and get the puck on that. They Martner and Eel would have so much attention. You could play in that left wing, Tony. Okay. So, the second line, if Stone remains Golden Knight, he’ll be there with Hurdle and Dorif. Okay. In agreement there. And then uh you moved the flying burrito brother to the third line. So Kolasar on the third line and uh you have him there with Carlson and and Smith if Riley resigns and not sure about that right now. Um I noticed that you are missing Nick Wah howen centering two HSK players on the fourth line. talk about the forwards in this fantasy lineup of yours and this is what happens on May 26th, May 26th. There’s a lot of Marner talk right now and you know the fans are talking about so we’re going to talk about it. That’s why we’re doing this. Um so we’ll talk about the depth pieces that would leave and more what that would mean but basically this would mean Barbashev White Cloud and Nick W would not be Golden Nightkin. talk more about Sod’s name. Sad, where’s he at? Sad is not in this as well. Sad’s not in this. I was going more with the regular Cogs in the lineup. Okay. Sad would not be there and Olivess would not be with the Golden Knights either. Wow. So, going line. Wow. Going from the bottom up, Howen between a couple HSK players. You got Lzinski, you got Lavois, you got Burke, you’ve got Ron Burg depending on what happens with his RFA situation. Trevor Connelly. Trevor Connelly. Sure. I know McCrimman, he just is not going to tell a player they can’t make a team. Fine, I get it. Fine, whatever. We’ll see if Connelly and Listen, if Connelly is developed at that point, that’s great because you knock Kasard back down to his regular spot and Connelly is least in the top nine. But that’s that’s a tall ask. It’s a real tall ask right there. Um like I said, Pearson left wing with Eel and Marner. Again, we’re just this is May 26. There’s a lot of things that can happen. You don’t need Doraf in that spot. You do not need Doraf in that spot because as long as Pearson can get a shot to the net or get in front, he’s going to have dynamite chances. You got the second line, Hurdle Stone, Dorfie. Dorf goes from right to left. I don’t know if that matters a whole lot for Doraf. He’s a sniper. He’s a shoot first player. He’s a goal scorer. You got Hurdle and Stone, two responsible players. Doraf can focus on being a scorer. Kolar was top line, second line. Kolar was all over last year. I think Kolasar can migrate to a third line role if that’s what was needed. You got the responsibility in William Carlson and Riley Smith. That becomes your tough line to play against for the opposition. And then fourth line, Howd in between a couple question marks. A lot of ways that could go. Lavois can play on the wing and also center. So that’s a possibility. I could see that. And they’re pretty high on him. Uh when you talk about defenseman, you had the pairings of McNab and Theodore Hannneathan and Pro and Corzac with White Cloud. No, Nick Hey. Nick Hegy’s going to probably The cheapest contract Nick Heg is going to get is this year. It’s his last last RFA deal. I think if he goes I think AFP said if he goes for a one-year bridge, he’s in the three something range. Three something. Yeah. if he goes for a multi-year deal, he’s in the four something, even five, depending on if another team values Nick Hey. So again, this is part of the depth pieces that just need to be sold and Corsac is ready to be an everyday player. Ben Hutton is probably an everyday defensive player on everyday defender on many teams in the National Hockey League. So you got that depth. You got someone like Luke Cormier still in Henderson who did get a who did have a cup of coffee with the Golden Knights um in the previous year. There’s some other players I don’t know if like a Jake Bishoff is ready or something like that, but Luke Cormier could slide into that seventh probably the seventh role the way the Golden Knights value Ben Hutton. And so yeah, I mean it works. This this line we’re talking about this this day of game lineup right here is cab compliant to the penny. to the they cannot one penny on this just so we know how this is. Okay, but it’s also fantasy land. Oh, 100% it’s fantasy land. 100% at 12.5. There’s no way that he’s going to sign for less than 135. Why why would he take Why would he take that for Vegas with the tax benefits? Why would he take that? And you have Riley Smith at 2.4 4 million when they that’s a strong possibility around 4 million deferred payments. I’m And I’m not deferred payments until 2064, but yes. Okay. He’ll be on the uh the Bobby Bonia plan. Yeah. So, uh again, like and and you have Pearson around 1 million. Yes. He deserves a little bit of a bump up in pay cuz he did play well as a guy that was just trying out for this team. Yeah. But I’m really surprised. No, Brandon Sad because again, Mcrimman singing his praises there when they were cleaning out the lockers. Brandon Sad, the issue is age and durability at this stage of his career. He’s been durable for a while, yes, but it’s just one of those choices that needs to be made at this point. And if Brandon Sad felt like a rental from the word go, uh Brandon Sod also, he’s looking for a payment. He’s looking to he was willing to take to give away what is $4 million AAV or 4.5 even. It was high to leave the Blues, terminate his contract and start fresh. Kelly Mcrimman swoops right in. Kelly Mcrimman swoops right in, sees a situation and Sod, you know, he was okay. Unfortunately, he was hurt down the stretch right there. And if listen, if Brandon Sod listen, Brandon Sod or Riley Smith at 2.4, fine. Give me one or the other. But there’s not really a path to both using this. I mean, I guess if they’re going to shed uh Zack Whitecloud too, then sure, you can have Brandon Sad. But Brandon uh sorry, uh White Cloud has a very team friendly deal for a couple more years, especially for a reliable third pairing defender. And Wah versus Hen. Why would you take Hen over Wah? Um is that a jump ball? Not that I would take out an overwh So a lot that So we’re talking fantasy land right now and the fantasy land that a lot of people live in, you don’t see players after they get an extension getting moved right away. People are saying, “Well, trade Shay Theodore.” No, Theodore got extended last year. They are not trading Sheay Theodore. Brett Houden is on again the stuff outside of this that’s another that’ll come up another time but we’re simply talking about Howen the on ice player right now and Houden just got a disgusting extension as far as what he was worth this in in this current season and if he can be a 15 goal scorer he’s going to hit value with his ability to play on the PK as well and help out on upper lines when he’s needed Nicholas W I just feel like He’s expendable right now. He’s always buried in that bottom four. He cannot Howen here’s the answer to your question. Howden could play center. Hen could play wing. Nick Walk can play center. Nick W cannot play wing. There’s your answer. Okay. And then Kolasar. Kolasar and Hen worked out a ton last summer and then they came back. They were gang busters at the start, but both of them pretty much cooled off, especially Kasar 100%. And Kolasar could possibly replicate that. We’ll have to see. Coming up next, is it worth selling off the depth pieces for Mitch Martyr? Back with more right after this on Lockdown Golden Nights. Welcome back on this edition of Lockdown Golden Nights, the nighttime edition. Lockdown Golden Knights at night on Mner Monday. Mner Monday. We have to definitely do something there for the remainder of June. We’ll have plenty of cont. I dropped something. I don’t know what that was. I tried. I don’t know what that was outside and something. Was it a pistachio? Might have been. So, uh, is it worth it to gut VK’s depth? Is it worth it to gut their depth? I say yes. I say yes because that’s all they had this season outside of the top line. So, we heard coach Cassidy talk about a shoot first team. We saw what Mcrimman did. He Mcrimman put together a very good regular season team that was not a good playoff team and Oilers are a really good team. Let’s be clear about this here. But this team, definition of insanity, doing the same thing over expecting a different result, right? So Olison, Sod, Riley Smith, part ways, whatever. Nick Haye gets his contract. Uh, you know, and you got basically the same lineup as last year. They maybe go shopping for maybe they get a $4.5 million player, a couple $2 million players. It’s the same thing. It’s the same thing. And then 2026, 27, it’s going to be the same thing. So, this is where you wonder if advocating for that change might be worth it. It’s going to take some luck for it to work out. You’re going to need a player from Henderson to step up. You’re going to need a new Brendan um Brett Houden to have a gang busters year. Hurdle is going to have to be better. All these things are going to have to happen for this to work. Tanner Pearson is going to score 21 goals on that top line. I mean, so where I’m going with all of this right now is why not make the change? Because what happened last year didn’t work. What happened the previous year, granted injuries, different situation against the Stars, but that team was still good. If they would have snuck past the Stars in that game seven, I think we’re talking about a team that might have made a run at least to the conference final right there. So, I’m all for it. I know the bigger problem happens when Doria needs his contract after the 2020 2526 season. But Golden Knights have never worried about the then, you know, the future. They worry about the now. And you know what? I’m not a 8* 12.5. Give Michael his 8 time 13 so he can be the man in Vegas. These are these are who it is. This is who I think they’re both going to be higher. I think MNER comes in around 135. I think Eel wouldn’t want to sacrifice a bill a year for that for Mner. I’m not quite sure. I’m not quite sure. I’m not either, but you know, I mean, listen, okay, everyone’s got issues with Mark Stone’s contract right now. Well, Mark Stone, he’s got a full no movement clause. He’s likely not going to be traded 2526 the upcoming season now and then the following season 26 27 he’s at 95 and then he’s going to be UFA. So Stone comes back after that he’s getting half that money at that point of his career as a 35 36 year old. Your favorite William Carlson he’s getting 5’9 upcoming season and the following season UFA and he’ll probably get a pay raise though right Tony probably get about 78 78. Yeah he’ll get he’ll get more money because the cap’s going up but this is a team that needs stars. They need players that can score, that can contribute, that can be clutch, all of that. A team that was fifth in goal scoring in the NHL this past season in the regular season. Could you imagine if they were able to get him back? I mean, Maris, I’m not saying they need Marcho, but you see how much Marcho was missed. And I’m not saying I’m not saying Marcho is the difference maker and the Golden Knights are still playing hockey if Maroso is out there, but you didn’t have that player. And Mitch Mner may or may not be that player. We don’t know. But I keep seeing pe people talking about Mitch Mner chokes in the playoffs. Dude’s got 63 points in 70 career playoff games. Okay, that’s pretty good. That’s pretty pretty good. 100 point pace, three regular seasons, once actually hitting that level. So, you know what? This is Vegas. Bill Foley is pedal to the metal. Doesn’t believe in a rebuild. Mcrimman is the magician, not Mitch Martyr. Mcrimman’s the magician. I’m for the change right now. I said Hurdle was the magician because we watched him disappear in the round against Edmonton. Yeah, that that that that was So what what were some of what were some of the objections or some of the feedback from from fans? Uh what were they A lot of fans do not want to part with Barb. Why? Again, like this is a business and I don’t care if they just revamp the entire team. It needs some retooling. It definitely does. I I didn’t think again I never bought into this being a playoff team. I told you that from the get-go, Golic, I did. And they were a division winner, Tony. So, what do you know? I know nothing obviously. But I do know that come playoff time, they weren’t going to score. And I talked about them the annual drought. The annual Tony, you were ahead of that. But was that more that you wanted to happen or more you thought it was going to happen? No, I thought it would happen. Come on. So you never trade three for one. I don’t dis I don’t agree with that. It I mean it’s essentially Barbashev Wah and and uh Hey, that those are the kind of the three right now. Fair. Fair. So I I don’t agree. I mean I think when you’re making a trade, if you get the and it’s not a trade, but it is a trade to a degree. If you come out with the best player in the trade, you win the deal. I know there’s a lot more to it than that, obviously. Someone says 2.4 for Riley Smith is way too much. the the intern got in there and said AFP is suggesting he’s over four million which is fine and uh he’ll definitely the 30-year-old he’s a playoff choker’s a playoff choker again see previous comments 63.7 games oh some of the VK players the five players that didn’t score a goal in the Edmonton series is that a choke or no I mean borders on a choke borders on a choke yeah I mean someone’s saying there’s wingers on Tahoe stop it players don’t make it to the NHL knock it off. Um, and I mean topic and I appreciate all the discussion. Someone said howen should go to the top line and basically the fourth line becomes you know the HSK line and all that and there’s other people talking about all the cont. It’s a good conversation to have because this is Vegas and people want to say this there’s no way it’s going to happen. Well, there’s no way Eel was going to happen and then it did. Eel was happening. It got quiet and then it did. And then back to the back to the topic here. Is it worth selling all this depth? I say why not roll the dice. You need a You need a Ron Burek. You need a Tanner Lzinski. Ron can’t score. Ron Burk can’t score. No, but he can be a third line left wing lock down. You need players that can hit the net. Not on the fourth line. You don’t. Okay. So that’s going to be the saw in Denmark. They all got two goals. Okay. Yeah. Sweden. Denmark. No, Denmark. It’s Denmark. So maybe wears his Denmark as Great Dane. They were they weren’t they weren’t beating Team Ken until Ron Bureick joined him. So watch it here. Okay. This was a VK team that heavily relied on the top line. They were topheavy. This would be topheavy. Uh perhaps top line. The second line should be pretty good as well. And we’ll have to see, you know, in the second year for Doraf, that’s a big question mark right now for me. Doraf has a very important year coming up because another 30 goal season, he’s looking at five times five. If he goes down to 14 goals in 82 games, he’s looking at three times five. It’s huge right now for Dora Fav. And we’re talking about the depth. You tell me a third line featuring Rodley Smith, William Carlson, and Lavois, Kolasar, whoever winds up getting that other winger spot. I don’t think Pearson will be on the top line no matter what. I don’t think so either, but I never thought that Kasar would be on the top line. I never thought Pearson would be on the top line, but here we are in the playoffs. He was on the top line two or three times starting the game. Yeah, he sure was. Coming up next, can the Carolina Hurricanes, can they claw their way back into this series? Uh, they win for the first time in 19 years. What’s more likely, Hurricanes getting back in the series or Mitch Martner? Sorry. Go ahead, Tony. Or Mitch Martyr. And then we’ll also talk about Stars Oilers when we return right here on this nighttime edition of Lockdown Golden Nights. Welcome back on Lockdown Golden Nights. Tony Kardasco, Chris Collick from Las Vegas. We appreciate you making us your first listen every day and night. Of course, we are the only daily BGK podcast and we’re still at it here. And a couple of nighttime editions here, uh, get it in early and the fans could have us first thing in the morning or late at night before they go to sleep. Sweet dreams. I think you need to sing to sing some lullabibis maybe for a lot of our listeners and viewers. And don’t forget to subscribe to our Lockdown Golden Nights YouTube channel. Shut up, Tony. There’s your lullabi. Chat GBT said that William Carlson was one of the top scorers of this past season. I’m telling you right now, the is going to ruin the world. So, so Carolina stunning Florida three to nothing and uh the 15game losing streak comes to an end in the conference finals. First time that they’ve won an Eastern Conference final game in 19 years. And uh they even had a goal that was waved off due to an offside call. And uh it was uh a Carolina team that came out and played with a purpose. Uh they killed off eight consecutive uh Canes penalties. Uh the Canes did they killed off the Florida Panthers penalties I should say. And Freddy Anderson with the shutout win. But you have to keep in mind that Florida played without Mikola, without Greer and Reinhardt. Three really important pieces, especially especially Mikola who’s 66. He’s just gargantuan and he’s a heavy sort of a player. So, um we’ll have to see. Now, they shift back to uh to Carolina. You just you don’t have to travel very far and I think uh Florida will have its wits about them and uh they’ll do this the next game. They should do it. I mean, it’s it’s tough to beat the team four games in a row. Ask the Edmonson Oilers about how that went last year against the Florida Panthers. It’s it’s hard in any circumstance for that to happen. And I mean, listen, the Hurricanes got one. Cool. Fine. They, you know, they they got the gentleman’s sweep, I guess, wrapped up. And, uh, you know, here’s here’s the fun part, right? Now, they they’re going back home. They win this game. Now, it’s on now it’s on the Panthers mind, right? If we lose the next game, we’re going to a game seven. And, uh, again, this is why a sevengame series is just the best playoff format in the world because even when you’re down 3 0, there’s a path to getting to game seven. I mean, obviously, it’s far-fetched, but there’s still that path. And now it’s simply it’s on the it’s on the the the Panthers mind. Do I think they’re going to come back? No. Um FanDuel thinks uh you’ll get plus 860 on your money if you want to take a chance on the Hurricanes. I think I think minus600 on the Florida Panthers. That actually feels a little bit light personally, but uh you know, do you think the injuries might have something to do with that too? Stan Coven had the winning goal. Did you know that he’s 5’8? Did you know that? Yeah, Dan Kovvin’s solid and if he can if it’s Hurricanes, he gets his name on the cup. Yeah, Nate Schmidt. Who knew? He had a clapper there that hit the post. Clappers. Yeah, he had Nick Schmid had like three goals in the first two games of the playoffs or something. It was a It was a bomb though, too. Like I don’t remember him um the way that he hit the puck, the way he struck the puck there on the slap shot. I I don’t think I’ve I saw that here in Vegas. I’m going to be honest with you. got seven points in 16 games. Not bad. Uh his best offensive output was with the Golden Knights in 1920 in the playoffs, nine points in 20 playoff games. So, I mean, geez, what is He’s 33 years old right now. So, good on shaved his head. Um and and uh kind of that was I think that was natural causes. Oh, is that natural causes? Natural causes. Someone said they shaved their heads, but I don’t He was the only one. Um, so Edmonton uh takes a two to one series lead into game number four and that’ll be on Tuesday night in Edmonton. Connor Brown, my X factor is out. He plays a big role with this team and I think they’re going to miss him again. But uh when you talk about obviously uh McDavid comes to life there in the last game to give his team the victory and Steuart Skinner’s just been playing way way way over Tom Smith. Baby, you said plus 11,000, right? Let me see if that’s changed at all since then. FanDuel apparently has the best. I know we have a we have a huge impact. So I’m sure it changed. It’s probably plus,600 now cuz you put it out there, Colleic. It’s down to plus 8,000. So, it moved. It moved 3,000. See, someone made a $20 bet and FanDuel’s like, “Whoa, pump up the brakes, guys. We got a big fan.” I Why didn’t I bet that? I got We I got to get action on that. Uh so, uh Edmonton. Uh so, our guy David Staples in the last game, uh won by Edmonton. We love David Staples of the Edmonton Journal. 17 gradea chances for the Oilers and Dallas had 11 and uh game number three. So a lot of pucks were on net a lot and in front of the net too. So good goalending uh for a while there even uh for for Dallas in that game. the Golden Knights uh to compare were in the single digits I think the entire series for high dangers besides the overtime uh the first overtime game where the Golden Knights ultimately lost in overtime the 5-4 loss. Um I mean listen it the Star I’m sorry the the Panthers the Oilers still on a collision course and I mean I don’t know I’ll say it I’m I’m rooting for the Oilers. I think it’d be nice for McDavid. It’ be good for my business personally if McDavid got the cup and everything. And if it if and win win win and if it does wind up being Oilers, Panthers, it’ll be a great series. It’ll be a really great series. Give me seven games. Maybe a little more balance this time. And uh you know, you can’t go wrong, right? If McDavid wins, cool, but uh Vegas fans wouldn’t mind seeing Schmidy uh lift the cup. He’d be one of the first people to get the cup, too. He’s probably one of the uh older players that doesn’t have one yet. Yeah, that would be really cool. And you you can just I heard McDavid after the game just talking about again he has to keep harping we do play defense, we do have a defense. You haven’t seen media saying these things. That’s the his own guy. That’s why he’s I know. And they keep asking him. I think it’s kind of funny. Uh but he also says how much he enjoys playing at Rogers Place. And so his contract comes up in a couple of seasons, right? Looking for an extension in uh a year from now perhaps, right? Yeah, him, Dry Cidle, Kale McCar, Nate McKinnon, they’re all taking turns being the highest paid player in the league as their contracts expire. And I mean, even Jack Eel has a chance to match Leand dryitle as far as his 14 million AE depending on how that shakes out. And Ike I mean Eel could be the highest paid player in the NHL for a minute. That’s pretty crazy to think about that. But um yeah, if it if it does materialize, Chris, I just I would like that top line regardless of who the third piece is. But I would let’s go. It’s Pearson season. I would say Eel Mner, you know what? Don’t play defense. Like, give that up. He doesn’t need to be a 200 foot player to prove to anyone. Defensive metrics aren’t. He’s always been a plus. No, I’m talking about Eel. I I No, me too. That’s my point, though. There’s responsibility on that line. Yeah. And okay, if you’re if you’re going to play two to one games, fine. But if you want to open it up and you want to score goals and you want to be consistent and score goals in the playoffs, then you need to shoot the stinking puck and put it on net. That’s it. Something need to change. That’s that that’s the nature and that’s why you and I think are both on board to for the concept. Getting a couple three or four or five million dollar cogs into the lineup while extending Smith and Olivesson and possibly Hey, like I don’t that’s it’s it’ll be the same thing. You’ll have a team that does well in the Pacific division. Possibly they’ll run it back, get another banner to win the division. Maybe they get second or third place depending on what happens with the Oilers or the Kings for that matter. And other teams are getting better besides the Golden Knights. That’s also kind of forgotten about right now, but it’s the same thing. And then playoffs are going to come. Stone’s a year older. Petrangelo is a year older playing like he’s eight years older. Noah Hannneathan, don’t know which one’s going to show up. Shay Theodore is going to do some great things and he’s gonna make like Nate Schmidt by the time we’re done watching him sometimes, too. Yeah, we don’t know if Hurdle’s going to show up. uh this season and yeah the turtle turtle the turtle but you didn’t add you didn’t h add any heavy players to this lineup and that’s what they’re lacking so well that’s someone from Henderson needs to take that take that situation Joe Fleming baby we appreciate everyone tuning in thank you so much something you and the some you and your favorite intern agree on actually we we appreciate you tuning in thank you so much especially our everydayers tuning in around the And uh we’ll be back again on Wednesday and we’ll have another edition. Of course, don’t forget Friday’s WTF, Saturdays sometimes Chris and Chris Junior show. For my man Chris Golic, I am Tony Cordasco from Las Vegas. We appreciate you tuning in. We’ll see you again on Wednesday right here on Lockdown Golden Nights. And please take care.

Toronto Maple Leafs free agent Mitch Marner has indicated interest in playing for the Vegas Golden Knights. If VGK were to sign Marner, what line would he be on? Is it worth sacrificing depth pieces to sign the superstar? The Carolina Hurricanes are trying to claw back into the Eastern Conference Final vs. the Florida Panthers. Can the Edmonton Oilers go up 3-1 on the Dallas Stars?
