Minnesota Vikings Quarterback J.J. McCarthy has CANNON for an arm!
Purple Daily is daily Vikings entertainment. I just want the Vikings to win a Super Bowl before we die. I will ride with this group. Seriously, man. Please. And away we go. And away we do go. Phase two of the offseason program. Judg, Chip Scoggins. That means the show is purple access. and Chipper and I reliving old times out at TCO yesterday watching the Vikings go through their uh second OTAA of the offseason. It’s actually the first one that we watched. And Chipper, let’s just get right to it and let’s get right to the topic everyone is going to want to touch on, which is Yeah, JJ McCarthy. Um, what were your takeaways? What were your takeaways from an organized team activity of the Vikings QB1 teaching and learning, Jud? Do not chart his throws. Okay. Do not chart the interception. You don’t know what you’re looking at. I I tried to chart. I tried to chart. It was It was hopeless. Brian Flores is blitzing guys and the offense is like, “Oh, we’re we’re installing. This is teaching and learning, not corner blitz time flow.” Um, you know, the one thing I want to talk about, where did the narrative start about his arm strength? Funny you mentioned that. Um, I don’t know. Where did did that originate during the during the draft process where some anonymous scout said something? Because I I watched him throw the ball and I don’t understand that narrative at all. I said the same thing. Did Did it start and and I’m I’m asking a question here. Did it start with the draft Nicks who thought that they didn’t see I I will say this as as a non-scout football reporter. Okay, I will say this. Unless you have Brett Favre’s arm, I honestly think it’s hard to see um as much about arm strength on tape as it is in person. Watching his watching the ball come out of his hand and seeing how the ball travels yesterday to me drove home what we what we saw last summer in training camp which I don’t know if you get I don’t know if film especially for an untrained eye like mine. I don’t know if film gives you the same okay that that is a real that ball is traveling that ball’s a missile. Yeah. I I I don’t know, but I it’s a complete uh wrong narrative because it looks like he slings the heck out of the ball. It looks like he’s got great arm strength and it’s almost like a flick of the wrist. I mean, he just um I I think he throws, you know, with high velocity on his passes. So, I I don’t That’s the one thing that jumped out to me. Obviously, they’re not even going half speed on some of this stuff. the lineman basically uh pull up in team drills. But you know, it’s interesting. I was thinking about this when you asked KO this question yesterday, Jud. Um because normally in a football practice to me, the only really interesting part is when they go full team, right, where you got 11 guys out there, but you can’t um simulate the actual speed the way you can seven on seven. Now, seven on seven, you don’t have defensive lineman, but you do simulate the speed of breaks, cuts, you’re right, wide receivers going to run, defensive backs are going to break on the ball. So, I think that’s probably uh when we talk about uh McCarthy getting used to the speed of the game. Now, it changes when you have lineman trying to kill you, but in terms of establishing the the chemistry and the understanding how his receivers run uh routes and breaks and all those things, I I think the seven on seven gives you a good semblance of like, okay, here’s how JJ is going to set guys up. And so I I do think it’s um I think it’s really important and I don’t think it’s by coincidence that Jefferson, Addison, Hawinson, all these guys are here during OTAAS pretty much. It sounds like they’ve been regulars here because they understand the importance of developing that connection with with McCarthy. So I think that’s huge. The other thing is and you know this became an overblown thing last year was his size because he lost weight. Uh but when you saw him in the locker room and then you see him yesterday walk out and he it looks like a completely different person in terms of like the muscle mass and the size and he we waited had to wait a little bit longer for a press conference because he went and got a weightlifting in. Um but just his his his body, you know, you could tell he’s back to pre-injjury and and fill it out and all that. So, um, but other than that, it’s hard to really glean a whole lot from those OTAAS cuz they’re just not going full speed at all. I think your point about attendance is huge, though. The I I I would say the number one storyline that I took and yeah, I mean, the arm strength is definitely not a problem. And and there are some there are some things he did good and bad as well, but I mean again, it’s OTAA too. I think the buyin is my storyline, though. Yeah, the buyin. I mean, Justin Jefferson flat out and yeah, it was contractual a little bit in the past couple of years, but Justin has never been, I don’t think, a regular attendee beyond probably his rookie season at OTAAS, right? And when you looked on that field yesterday offensively, everyone was there. I think everyone all the Yeah, the receivers were there. Exactly. Uh Fry not practicing, Darasaw not. Anyway, I think the buyin is is huge because Chipper, what the buyin speaks to me is this. The narrative of well, Vikings are probably going to take a step back. It’s a young QB, first year starter. I think they think it’s garbage. I I think this team I think the buyin is we won 14 games and our expectation is that we are going to be Super Bowl contenders again or or we so I don’t think that this whole thing about well yeah I mean 14 wins was nice but Darnold’s gone the I don’t see any plan for this team to let up and as Okonnell said too in his uh postpractice presser you know when when 18 is out there busting his hump and going hard in May. No one else has an excuse of, “Well, I didn’t feel like it.” Well, that’s what we were saying on the sideline yesterday. When when Jefferson and Harrison Smith are there, you better show up. You better take it serious when those two guys uh are there. But I agree with you because this is a team that won 14 games and the players look around and they look at the roster. They look at what the improvements they they had and said, “You know what? this is a team that’s built to win right now and so they have to maximize every bit of this window that they have. And so I also think it’s it’s the uh I I think it’s the you know culture, climate, whatever you want to call it that’s inside the organization right now where guys like being there. Um they like being together. They like the vibe is good. It’s not, you know, like oh I got to go to OTAAS now. I mean there might be a little bit of that. you got to get on the plane some of these guys. But I think they understand that and their opportunities right here like, you know, they they won 14 games and they improved the roster. Now you had a you’re adding an unknown so far at quarterback, but I think at least from Jefferson and them’s perspective, I think they looked at as like, hey, we need to be here for him. Like we need to be here for for McCarthy. need to be here to develop this so there’s not any fall off from what they had last year offensively. Um and so I I I was impressed by that. I don’t know how you know what the percentage of attendance rate at other teams is if it’s you know if all like contending teams or teams that are in this kind of window of win now are like this. But um I think it’s just a mark of a pretty motivated team with a really strong veteran core that understands yes, you know, it’s OTAAS, you’re in shorts and stuff, but you can still get a lot of good work in. And the uh to be clear, too, so so attendance is not certainly mandatory at the OTAAS. Guys do come and go. So like a guy that was there on Monday might not be there on Tuesday but and it’s been very good I think with Okonnell as coach. Yeah. But but when Jefferson shows up or Harrison Smith shows up that’s to to me to me attendance being good is great. That’s fine. But it’s also who shows up because if Jefferson’s the one guy who’s not there it’s like hey Justin Jefferson’s not here. So yeah, I I think that and Okonnell alluded to at least I took it from his quote that he definitely had talked to Justin about this like he he’s like we talk a lot and I think that there is just they’re trying to get everybody on the the same page and I think that Justin does like McCarthy a lot. I think that their that their developing burgeoning relationship is real, but I also think that there is just a key thing put on. Justin Jefferson is right now the captain of th this team. Like they’ve got eight of them or whatever, but he’s the captain. And just the presence there to me in May has a sensibility of okay, you’re buying in now. That’s pretty damn important. Well, he’s Okonnell’s talked he talked about a lot last year with with Jefferson becoming a captain and all that meant and taking more ownership and he he stressed it again yesterday when he talked about him being here and and just understanding that he’s the guy like he’s the guy everybody follows. He sets the tone about work ethic, about all the things, you know, showing up, doing working really hard in practice, doing all these things. Like every team has a or I think great team has a guy they should follow, right? Like we just coming off the Timberwolves season, Anthony Edwards is that guy, right? He’s the guy who sets the tone for the organization. Justin Jefferson sets the tone. Typically, it’s the quarterback, but right now because it’s they have a young guy, it’s Justin Jefferson, right? And I got this sense like from the weekly conversations with uh Jefferson, like that means a lot to him. Like he really take he’s taking ownership of it. like it’s it’s something he takes pride in that hey um this organization’s basically looking at me to be the face of it to be the the you know kind of the the driving force behind you know a team that has some really good star players but he’s the one guy that they look at. So I I think he’s I actually think it’s it’s uh I think it’s been good for him to kind of have to be in this in this role. I mean, I think he’s embraced it. And so, I think it’s good. It’ll be good for you mentioned him and McCarthy. I mean, you know, it might not be major thing, but you know, them going to a Timberwolves game together and sitting beside each other. I mean, just the closer you have that connection, um, and then having them there doing all the work and because McCarthy was asked last year how many reps he got in OTAA with Jefferson. He couldn’t remember a ton obviously because it’s, you know, yeah, I mean, I don’t know exact number, but I mean, think about what this means to McCarthy’s develop because I, you know, I was thinking about this. He he mentioned yesterday that this is the time for him to take risks and I asked him like, you know, what does that look like? What do you what do you mean by that? And it’s like this is a good uh phase or just time for him to figure out, okay, can I get away with this? He mentioned anticip anticipation anticipatories throws like I got to throw to a spot and know that Jefferson’s going to be there. I got to throw to a spot and know that Hawinson or Addison’s going to be there. So that those reps, that’s the only way he’s going to learn this stuff is if he’s, you know, he’s taking these risks in OTAA where it doesn’t matter if he throws an interception or he makes a mistake. He’s got to learn like, okay, what can I do? What’s the boundaries? What, you know, how, you know, how far can I really push this on on some things? So, uh, I think it’s invaluable. And Jefferson, as KO talked about too, basically wants him to make those throws because he he said that that, you know, Justin tells every QB that he plays with, I’m going to win at the top of the route. And so, yeah, this is going to be I I actually think so. the seven on seven pass uh for Jefferson o over the middle that got tipped by Murphy and picked by Pace I thought was a perfect example of that because you do have to you do have to figure out in the NFL right with your arm strength and arguably the best receiver right now in the entire game but these guys on defense are good too so there’s definitely a learning curve what I like about McCarthy is I think he’s mature enough to get that Yeah. Like like he he does come across as an old soul, which could be good or bad, but I think in this case it’s good. I think he gets it, but he also but he also knows that he’s young. And so yeah, it it feels like he’s not trying to impress you. It feels like his throws are testing things. And then to your point off the top of the show, which I also think is a fascinating thing, and you pointed this out to me during the practice, which is look at how often KO goes to him after just what plays, like not series, just plays, and they converse as well. So, I mean, you talk about you talk about an interesting dynamic here. This is really really going to be fun to watch, I think. Well, yeah. just kind of paint the picture for the people watching is they’ll run a play then the other 10 guys will go huddle up over here and and Okonnell’s standing what 10 feet 15 feet up you know off to the side Yep. And it’s not just McCarthy it’s the other quarterbacks but we we watch McCarthy most because he’s getting the most reps and he goes over there and they have like a just a conversation about that play. I mean, I’d love to hear kind of the inside ball what they’re talking about the finer points, but it’s like it’s almost like you’re in math class, you do a you do a a problem and then the teacher comes over and says, “Okay, this is what this is why you did it. Here’s the steps.” It’s like it was like every play every play. Yeah. So, it was um you know, Okconor calls this the teaching and learning and like that’s legitimately what it is. like you can tell um he’s wanting to like really break down the process of every situation for him and so I’m sure some of it McCarthy’s heads might be spinning a little bit because there’s so much coming at him but you know you said old soul I think that’s right and I think you hear the thing the saying oh he’s mature beyond his years I mean that’s that’s the way he comes across to me and I think that’s just the way he’s I think quarterbacks anymore because there’s so uh coached and trained from the time they’re 12 years old. They all have their specialty coach. I mean, they every quarterback now in high school has, you know, these coaching uh quarterback coaches and camps that they go to. And then, you know, you do that and then you go to Michigan and all that. And and I just think it’s with McCarthy, I think he’s very process driven, like very wants to pick apart everything and very um detailed about like literally every facet of his life and every facet of playing that position. So, I I find him fascinating when he talks. I think he’s he’s very kind of introspective about playing a position and just being a leader of a team. Agreed. Yeah, exactly. So, I I find him very comfortable in that role. Don’t you don’t you get the sense like he he’s under a big spotlight right now stepping be but I don’t think he’ll be bothered by that one bit. I also think outside of the fact that there is no positive from him not being able to practice last season. I also think in watching this Chipper that in some ways it’s a good thing that he didn’t have to start or play because like you see him now trying to process and learn and do and this is with a year in the system when we know he worked his ass off. So like he knows a lot like like you realize the complexities, right? Like if you’re a kid out of college and you are thrown in and we’re all like, “Well, why aren’t you better than this?” Right? And and Okonnell is sort of it’s like I would trust him. He 100% knows what he’s doing with QBs. And he’s still like teaching after every play in an OTAA of year two for JJ. I just think the process of developing a a QB and I mean this all goes back to Okonnell’s quote which is teams fail young quarterbacks more than young QBs fail teams and you see what the intricacies of what they’re what they’re doing and you know I do think that there is there’s a big negative and he couldn’t practice there’s a big positive in he got the year to basically just learn and you can tell he’s still learning. Yeah. And I think and he’s mentioned this before, but watching Darnold prepare throughout a week for a game and like what that entails because I’m sure it’s, you know, it’s not apples to oranges to what you do in college, but just so much more intense and and because the game’s so much more complicated, but just seeing, you know, I think Darnold is a smart veteran guy who’s, you you know, seeing different things and and to be in Okonnell system and just see how, okay, Monday you’re doing this, Tuesday you’re doing this off day, Wednesday here’s what you’re doing and just kind of systematically going through the week even if he’s not practicing and getting those reps just to kind of observe that and see and have the earpiece on and all those things. I can’t help but you know pick up a lot of stuff there. But as Okonnell made the point yesterday, watching it on film and getting on the field and doing it is two different things. And so, right, that’s what this is about. Like, getting I think it was to your question, right? Like because the speed is going to keep getting ramped up like I I just ask when the speed might get picked up a little bit. Day two. I want to see a little bit more. But that’s it. Like that’s But I I do, you know, I never really thought about seven on seven because I’m like there’s not linemen trying to sack. coaches like it though, passing camp. But but it is because your receivers are running the the speed they’re going to run in the game, right? They’re not just jogging through these things. They’re running full speed and so that’s where you’re getting the beneficial. Now the next things comes when the pocket collapses in two seconds. What are you going to do? You know, so um but yeah, I mean I I agree with you that having a red shirt year I don’t think ever having a red shirt is a bad thing, right? Yeah. Yeah. I you’re you’re right though team drills both sides are like in installing things and so it’s really slow and methodical seven on seven because the best part is be flow turns him loose. Well that’s it. Yeah. In seven on seven it gets crazy. Ain’t it uh interesting too like um I don’t think he didn’t do it with Kirk Cousins. He didn’t do it with Sam Darnold. I don’t think he’s going to do it with JJ McCarthy. Brian Flores is not going to care that care that he’s a young quarterback. He’s trying to prepare his defense, you know. Yes. Oh, got it. And it was it was interesting to hear uh Van Ginkle talk about uh flow and just, you know, the offseason, how he goes about. He’s like, it almost sound like a mad scientist. He’s coming up with different things that like this is trial and error time for Brian Flores. It’s like, okay, let’s see if this work. Let’s see if that works. And so McCarthy is not seeing vanilla defenses, vanilla coverages, you know. So, you’re right. And that’s good for his development, too. I mean, I’m sure it drives Okonnell crazy sometimes because they want to see, you know, not Brian Flores’s, you know, u brainchild creations, uh, with some of these schemes, but, um, that’ll be good for him, too. So, but even like Van Gole, he said that, you know, sometimes you show up, you don’t know what to expect, and you’re going to see new wrinkles, which I think’s, uh, you know, is good for that side, too. Two things off of that, too. one, the personnel changes and and like like there’s more parts now and we’ll we’ll talk about that in a second. There’s more parts and two Brian Flores knows that OC’s and coaches have spent the summer or or the springtime watching what he did, right? And they copy it, but if you don’t change it up, they’re going to find ways to beat So, like the game, that’s what makes the sport so great. The cat and mouse game in the pro game is constantly changing. And so, so I’m sure Okonnell is seeing looks where he’s like, “What? We didn’t see that last year.” And Be’s like, “You sure didn’t?” And Mard’s like, “What the hell am I supposed to do?” Well, and that’s what you know, Van Genko said. He’s like, I mean, these teams were studying the Vikings defense to try to figure out how to attack it. And so, as he said, you got to try to stay one step ahead of what’s, you know, the adjustments that teams are going to make to you. So, um, so I think that’s where you’re right. When you have new personnel or or different personnel or even if you if you brought back the same guys, I think Flores is smart enough to know like, hey, we can’t be the same version of that we were last year because these coaches are too good at identifying your weaknesses. So, um, so it’s, you know, it reminds you that they got a really good coaching staff, like guys that that are just top, you know. No question. Uh, yeah. Flores, Mardle, Macau, like just to to name three. Uh, they’ve got No, he’s put together he’s put together a coaching staff that eventually is going to get more pilered. like they’re fortunate that has not been completely pilered yet, but uh I think Macau’s going to be a head coach within the next couple of years. Will Flores get another shot? He deserves it. I don’t know he’ll get it. Yeah, he could be, but he certainly could, but he certainly qualified. Um all right, upfront defensive line. Let’s talk about it. Yeah, Javon Hargrave looks the part of the guys that we No, no, no. He’s not Jerry Ball. He’s not Ted Washington. Not Pat Williams. Not Pat. Exactly. Right. But 2025, he looks the part. Been a while since I’ve seen a guy that said that’s a big man in the middle. That Yeah, it jumped out. I was like, that’s what a guy in this insul should look like. He he looks like he could play in the middle and clog up some rain lanes. Yeah, he he’s a big He’s a big dude. Um and you know, we saw him and Jonathan Allen together there uh side by side. That that’s a a good looking interior defensive line. So, uh, you know, the only one we didn’t see yesterday was Josh Matelis, I think. And, um, who else? Isaiah Rogers was Rogers, which surprised me because I think he’s gonna I think he’s got a great chance to start. Yeah. Um, and you know, obviously it’s not mentors. We don’t Jeffa got a ton of work. Yeah. He was with some ones. Yeah. Yeah. So, um, but we saw, you know, different packages with um Dallas Turner, you know. So, but yeah, it I would say the interior line at least on paper and just optics looking it looks different particularly the hard grave because he’s a he’s a space eater there. Speaking of big guys, I think the biggest body difference that we saw Jaylen Naylor looks like a different dude and a different number. Yeah. Yeah. He’s gone from what 83 to1. Uh but physically he has changed himself now. Now two things off of him. One is last year of his contract, which always helps. And two is I do think that at some point in time, probably in training camp, Addison’s going to get suspended for a few games. Yeah, Jaylen could bump up to to the two. But um it wasn’t like you can tell that that guy when the season came to an end, went to the weight room, and I don’t think he came out until the OTAA started. That’s right. We saw him yesterday. He looks totally different to me. Yeah, he his body’s certainly changed and um you know, I talked to him a few times and he seems like a very uh really motivated individual to try to be the best. I did a column on him this year about how he did the um Pilates like he was uh his first year and he felt like he was looking for an edge and something that might give him an advantage. So, he took up Pilates and became like a dedicated uh person. and he felt like that helped him. And so I think he’s constantly looking to improve himself. And you can see with his body, I mean, he’s changed his body for sure. And so, hey, that third receiver spot’s there, you know, it’s there to to uh to be had. So, and you’re right about Addison, you still waiting on see what kind of punishment he’s going to have from the NFL. And so, there there could be an opening, you know, early in the season for someone to step into that that role. The only the only thing that I would say on Jaylen is you got to secure the football because because like he he caught I think 24 passes. He had six touchdown catches. So like he was great there. Um but the drop against the Rams in the Thursday night game comes to to mind. There were a few plays there. But yeah, I I mean he I don’t think he’s got a chance to break the bank elsewhere, but I think he definitely has a chance if he can have a good good year to bump up to like a two on another team. and certainly make some money. Well, and that’s the thing. It’s like I know there’s only so many opportunities when you have Jefferson and Hawinson and Addison, but you know what? They draw so much attention that there is opportunities for you to make because you’re you’re going to get a lesser defender on you. And so, there’s opportunities there. And um at least we’ve seen with with uh you know we’ve seen it with the quarterbacks and I don’t know if it’s the way it’s just coached or the scheme or whatever. It’s like they’re not afraid to go to different guys if if you know the top two guys are covered. Let’s finish with this question for you Chip Scoggins. Let’s go back to quarterback but not QB1 QB2. I got a question for you. Given and and and it was one OTAA, but I was struck by Sam Howell’s lack of arm strength. And so my question for you is this. How convinced percentage-wise, something like that. Are you that QB2 is on the roster right now? I’m not 100% sold at all. 50% I you know I just um yeah I was I felt the same way with you and again one OTAA first time I ever seen a guy in practice so you know I didn’t if you’re talking about arm strength comparing his and JJ’s you know um I just don’t think you can do it and you know it’s it’s the history of turnovers Jud I mean it’s like well you can see sort of why though like I don’t know what what his arms there’s a one along the sideline right Yes, it reminds me, and this is not to denigrate this guy cuz his savvy and moxy ma made him effective, but it reminds me of what I remember seeing in Mano in 2005 from Brad Johnson, but the difference was Brad was brilliant. Yeah. you know, um, but I mean, I’m sorry, but if that’s the AR and I don’t know why you wouldn’t be throw like I don’t think that you would, you know, I think you’re throwing. So, I just I came away from that thinking to myself, I am not positive QB2 because we you can make the case for Brett Ripen, but at the end of the day, I think he’s QB3, and I think he’s he’s like a coach type in waiting. I just don’t I’m throwing it out there that I’m not convinced the QB2 is set. Well, and you know, you can say, okay, we’re talking about the quarterback, too, but like this team is built to win right now. Like, you can’t punt on that position. You need to try to find the best option that you can at that position just in case, right? I mean, hell yeah. You can’t, you know, um you need somebody that you can can get you to the playoffs if something happened to JJ McCarthy like Yes, sir. So, I I I don’t know that it’s uh how um again, I don’t know like what trades are out there. I don’t know what, you know, who would even be available. That’s probably something as you get into training camp, you find out who’s kind of lost a position battle, who’s you know, whatever. Um but I I had the same thoughts in terms about velocity that you had yesterday. And don’t forget too, an important part of this discussion is in uh 200 2023 when Kirk got got hurt and they went through what they went through dos, Hall and Mullins. At the end of that season, Mark Wolf basically said the fact that we didn’t have a competent QB to back up Kirk was not an excuse. Yeah. So like no spent a lot of money on this roster. I was going to say and when you spent the amount that they spent in March, I’m with them. So, I just in watching Howell I I don’t know that there’s a lot, you know, I don’t know that there’s a ton of excitement and he’s QB, too, so I sort of get that. But I also I’m with you, which is you can’t punt. Like, you can’t be like, well, and McCarthy, God love him, is coming off, yeah, a torn meniscus, which required two procedures. So, you also can’t say fully he’s going to be an Iron Man. I just I think it’s worth monitoring probably more than I thought after the trade was made. So that’s Yeah, that’s that’s probably the right thing. And and here’s the thing I got to imagine is this regime has has shown a willingness to if they see a problem try to go make a move to and and Okonnell’s going to know, right? He’s going to say, you know what, this is not and maybe he doesn’t feel that way. maybe says, “You know what? I see I can help him get to a certain level.” I don’t know. But, um, but I don’t think he’s going to sit there and be like, “Well, you know, I’ll put that off because that’s, you know, we’re all focused on JJ.” I think he wants to have the best quarterback room he can possibly have. I don’t think Okonnell So, the the one the one mistake that I think is made is Okonnell like is come one, come all if you’re a quarterback. No, that’s not the case. I also think he has a tell and that this is not a surprise at all, but I don’t think that he thinks that a lack of arm strength can be worked around. Yeah. You know, like you look at his quarterbacks, right? The guys he liked and they could all throw the ball. Um Yeah. There were just a few of those passes that I was like, “Oh, oh, hold on a second here. That’s not going to get it done.” the sports net alarm sounding. Well, I mean, Kevin Oconor, you can’t coach around that. Yeah. No, like if the ball’s going like this through the air in slow motion, you know, Justin Jefferson might win every time, but it’s not going to matter. Anyway, I just thought that that was an that just a first observation and I was like, okay, that’s at least interesting. So, but I will say this with you on this. Whoever came up with the narrative that JJ McCarthy doesn’t have arm strength, I I you’re 100% right. I I completely uh disagree with that one. I smell a Scagggin. That’s right. That’s what I smell. I smell a SC. You get to the bottom of it. Find out who said you’re right. Absolutely incorrect. All right, Chip Scoggins. Talk to you next week. Purple access. We will see you later.
J.J. McCarthy has a HUGE arm! Where did the narrative about J.J. McCarthy’s lack of arm strength come from for the Minnesota Vikings Quarterback? Purple Daily/SKOR North’s Judd Zulgad is joined by The Minnesota Star Tribune’s Chip Scoggins to discuss just that. Neither believe the narrative is fair. Judd and Chip also discuss possible benefits of J.J. McCarthy not having to play last season. Could that actually benefit the Minnesota Vikings in 2025?

He has a cannon for an arm but has glass knees!!
The narrative originated from Buckeye, Spartans, Crimson Tide, & Huskie fans whos behinds were still hurting from the spankings he gave em for 2 years
The Chipster!!
Forno was one of the guys that ran with the weak arm narrative.
Not much point to having a cannon for an arm if you've already shown the ability to get season ending injuries.
What? Lmfao. No silly. Just because he has zip doesnt mean he can throw far with velocity. Ya so clueless. Stop trolling these sad fans.
these guys could use advice on camera placement
My biggest concern about JJ’s arm last year was the line drive balls. I don’t know who could have watched him and thought he had a weak arm.
My thought is that no matter if it's "voluntary" to show up for OTAs or not. If you're getting paid 30+million a year…IE Jettas, you should be there. Why wouldn't you put forth max effort for your team and teammates?
I am loving Jetta’s leadership right now. And his (seemingly) awesome relationship with KOC but I hope KOC has told him “I will ride with you always but if you become a punk-diva, it’s over!” Jetta can really be a legend if he keeps performing while still being a great team mate.
I wish no rookie QBs could start. Just sit and learn. Can’t hurt. Remember when the rule for evaluating WRs was to wait three years? Been easier for WRs to acclimate. NFL QB is the hardest position in sports to play.
B-Flo needs to tell KOC “I plan to send some guys at JJM today…not often but they will be coming.” And KOC should be saying “OK!”
We have the horses now we need to win a championship this season go Vikes
Let's see if he can survive longer than a 1/2 of a preseason game this year.
Why exactly are people optimistic again? Am I missing something?
Dynasty, skol brother #1
that canon arm bro picture perfect
27:16 uh oh… time to bring in ARodge
Are you sure JJ has skipped out on OTA practices before? I seem to remember he hasbt
I don't remember them saying he didn't have arm strength. I remember they said he didn't put touch on the ball which if you watch his college tape you do see that he didn't put touch on it. That's something he said he wanted to to show at the combine.
He's got a hose…
For an arm
