Bruce Cassidy 5/9: Now Is The Time For Guys To Step Up

morning Bruce Good morning Any update on uh Braden McNab and also second question just uh thoughts on Nick W getting a hearing for the Department of Player Safety yeah I got nothing new on Nabber Um we’ll see where he’s at tomorrow terms of game status Um Nick will have a hearing later and yeah that’s it I mean he uh very atypical of Nick but they called it and was the right call We’ll see what uh what comes of it That’s nothing else to say on that one You guys were able to get a lot more shots through a lot more opportunities to score last night What did What did you maybe do different between game one and game two to where those opportunities were there well we tried to spread out a little more right to get a little more time and space and then attack the interior right they block shots well They take care of the slot So like Minnesota you you got to try to stretch them out of those areas so you can get some second chances recover some puck So that’s that’s where I thought we did the a better job We had a day to kind of work on that and thought allowed us to have a little more offense Uh supported the puck well around the low slot area when when we did get it back So get some looks from there Just you know I know Pearson Barbashev some guys had some good looks Unfortunately we didn’t convert The the success you’ve had on special teams on both sides both killing and on the power play I mean is that encouraging that you can take that forward or discouraging that you weren’t able to take advantage of that no that’s encouraging That’s a positive Um power play’s been pretty consistent all year in the top five Our I think our PK is better than our numbers indicate in the regular season I thought we did a better job than maybe the percentage but um I mean it was a great kill five minutes I mean you’re up against it there So good on us Too bad we couldn’t take advantage of it Usually that gives you a lot of momentum and we weren’t able to uh you know convert but that doesn’t preclude us from having confidence going forward in it right so we got to keep killing like that Uh if we get ourselves into penalty uh problems because that is a momentum shift for the you know the team that does kill especially against you know a strong PP like Edmonton has So those are both positives So we need our power play to come through for us if we’re not finishing well Last night I thought we generate a lot of good looks but still we’re we’re we’re off net a little bit missing some that we need to convert on So that’s got to change for us going forward in terms of I’ll go right to the start of the game We had a great backdoor opportunity you know get get an early lead We got you know we need to finish some of those We typically do So I if we keep generating those I I think they will go in our favor What’s your message to the team then going into game three knowing that you played better in game two than Well it’s a little bit of that We we did play better Put ourselves in a much better position to win the game We’re always going to you know Darren look at a few things and that’ll probably come tomorrow morning You know we’ll go through the technical part tonight There’ll be a little conversation about you know where we’re at and keep getting better because we were much better than game one Um and we’re going to have to be better if we expect to win the series So keep progressing in that direction Um then tomorrow we’ll talk about what we did well to play a better game and then a few things that they continue to do well that we can do a better job of taking away Those are little tactical things and there’s not a million things there I think both teams know each other well And you know creating some of your own puck luck Um sticking with it you know when you go through a series usually that that pendulum can swing if you stay with it but you know two equal teams not put us in those categories So um that that’s the message And listen we won three in a row against Minnesota right so we’re certainly capable of it Um last year we were up two nothing won some road games and didn’t win the series So we have previous history right in front of us of how a series can change So I I I think the guys understand that They lived it So um we’re disappointed but we’re not discouraged so to speak You know we wanted to win the game I thought we played well enough to We didn’t So let’s go play better and win the next one You kind of answer but the fact that you guys were up to it last year and and they came back on you instead of you able to draw from that and Well I think so It’s right there It’s It’s Listen it’s a different year and all that but it’s it’s I don’t always like to bring that stuff up because I think the player we got a smart group they they know um they you know Alex Vanzo’s probably been through you know 10 different series that have swung and and and different guys in that locker room So you know that’s that’s they don’t need me to point that out I mean some of maybe some of the newer players or younger players um though we’re you know they’re they’re halfway to what they need and we’re still a ways away to what we need So as long as we’re getting better throughout the series we’ll be okay Bruce in the in the event that you don’t have Nabber and and Nick how vital is that depth that you built over the course of the season to come in this time of year well we’re you know they need to go in the players that may or may not go in Let’s assume some guys have to go in because of that Um you know they got to do their part but then it becomes a little more You look around the room then probably need a couple guys in the room to elevate as well right that have been in the series and have been playing all the games that that’s what you’re looking for and would we love a Miko Rant Nesh type of game from somebody of course but like that’s not we’re not keeping our fingers crossed I mean that’d be great if it happened but you know like I said a couple of guys that maybe feel like they can give a little more well now’s the time now’s the time um as I said I don’t think we ever need heroes but guys to step up and be a little better um in situational hockey because that’s what usually comes down to when you’re in close games be a little bit better in those situations Finish a little better make an extra save whatever the case may be Get a clear a block um make the play to to spring a guy to give yourself a better offense whatever the case may be That’s what we need a little bit more of the guys that are capable of doing that and have done it So that you know that’s that’s as simple as I can make it You can’t put too much in the guys going in Can’t expect them you know they just hey do your job and and uh help us win Um so that would be the message to any of the if if new guys are going in The mentality in the playoffs is always that game’s over on to the next How much more difficult is that the sequence at the end of last night everybody was so frustrated with non-all goal How much more difficult got to move past it We addressed it last night I thought it was a clear trip didn’t get called That’s it It’s over Um we’ll see how the health of our player is because of that but at the end of the day you got to move on We got to Nobody cares so to speak right like we got to get ready for game three Um put that behind us Did you hear from the league at all about that Nonco no No All I know is Nick’s got a a hearing and and that that it’ll affect our lineup and or may or may not I assume it will if he has a hearing but I don’t know that We’ve asked you about a couple of other guys but any update on Pavlo Dorf yeah he’s going to travel Skated this morning doing much better So uh is a chance for tomorrow but the news we got today So uh that’s encouraging

  1. Edmonton seems unstoppable. The Oilers can let 97 and 29 rest until the third period and then unleash them. McDavid and Draisaitl can't be kept off the score sheet when it counts. Oilers in five.

  2. Your not gonna outscore Edmonton. You have to rely on your defence and staying out of the box / wearing them out with your big bodies and physicality

  3. oil fan: this guy is a helluva good coach…this is FANTASTIC hockey…both teams are 100% engaged…officiating notwithstanding…what more could you want as a hockey fan?

  4. Pickard played WAY above his standing last Knight. It was a one-off IMO. VGK will win one in Edmonton and again in Vegas. So this one's going at least 6 games.

  5. Mr. Cassidy pretty shaky, not the same guy as usual lol. what goes up, must come down lol. vegas coming down. doesn't pay to cheat. sucks to lose. cross check to the face? really? desperation tactic. sucks to lose eh?

  6. Vegas would have dominated the Wild and the Oilers so far if Adin Hill was playing 100%. He’s been giving the other team easy goals. Only seen one or two that were earned and the OT winner was probably the one.
