[Talkin’ Baseball] Nick Castellanos is being kept out of today’s lineup for making an inappropriate comment after he was pulled from last night’s game, per @charlottevarnes

  1. He’s gonna need to start getting used to being replaced for better defense in games where we are leading in the 8th/9th. I have no idea why we didn’t do it more to begin with. His bat is still valuable (sorta) but if he thinks he should be in the field he’s delusional.

It’s a team sport, Nick. Have some damn self awareness.

  2. I am so intrigued. Was he just so mad at Rob he said something he shouldn’t have? Was he mad at a teammate? Did he say something about Bryce’s wife?? Like what does this mean

  3. I’m a Nicky C enjoyer, but if he was that crabby about being pulled in a close game, it sounds like he needed the day off.

  4. Topper’s management style involves deferring to his veteran players and allowing them to heavily weigh in on what they feel they need to succeed (e.g. playing through a slump). For him to bench Casty for an “inappropriate comment” tells me it definitely crossed a line. Hopefully this is something they can all move on from after tonight.

  5. What could have Nick said? If he said it privately he doesn’t deserve to be benched. We are all adults and he is a passionate solid player with the longest streak since Pete Rose? Confused…

  6. Rob Thompson: I lost the clubhouse 2 years ago. So now it’s time to do something about it. I don’t even care if we lose to the Marlins.

  7. Should’ve benched him after the first inning. Rob’s a loser and there was a reason he was never the manager before this team

  8. No player has cost their team more runs due to poor fielding over the last 4 years than Nick. He has no business being in the field late in games.

  9. I get it. I get it. This sub is just a bunch of Rob Tompson apologists.

  10. Last time something happened between Casty & the team (players, coaches, media, etc…), we went on a deep WS run so i’m here for it.

  11. Seems to be an unpopular opinion but I don’t think having a games started streak is alone enough reason to automatically never get benched.

The reality is Castellanos is the worst defensive outfielder in the majors and subbing him was perfectly logical. If he takes offense to that it’s an issue that needs to be addressed because frankly it’s something that should be happening more often.

  12. Good on Rob, across the board in sports these players are coddled as fuck. Have to understand that we’re all human and dumb actions will result in consequences.

  13. Can we all agree if he criticized Topper’s bullpen management Castellanos probably shouldn’t be benched?

  14. Well, we can all rest assured that despite having won 5 straight and 30 of 46, that Rob Thomson has the lost the clubhouse and the team will never win a championship as long as he’s around!

  15. Wtf is up with all the Thomson hate in here?! First, to my knowledge, it hasn’t even been reported what Nick said, so nobody can really evaluate whether this benching is appropriate.

But more fundamentally, Thomson is arguably the most successful manager in Phillies history after Charlie and Dallas Green. The fact that y’all can’t show even a little perspective about this situation is evidence that everyone has just totally forgotten the pain of Philadelphia baseball prior to Topper’s assuming the job as Manager.

  16. Well he already got his 4RBIs on the week, so this probably helps avoid his inevitable 3K effort tonight.

  17. Unless Casty literally threatened his life, then benching him is bullshit. For one, he’s been pretty reliable at bat, and we need him. For two, whatever he said to Rob was probably true.

And it’s bullshit to not let him keep his streak going.

  18. My biggest problem with this is he had NO BUSINESS starting all 162 games last year. But Rob did it anyway and now arbitrarily he’s like I think I’ll control the clubhouse for once in my management career.

    Alright. I’m done.
