Islanders Interested in Sabres JJ Peterka | New York Islanders Rumors

you’re listening to Up the Turnpike with host Mitch Anderson and Mattal [Music] hello and welcome into the Up the Turnpike YouTube channel what’s going on matt Ori alongside Mitch Anderson mitch have to hop on again today hey we said yesterday rumor season galore right we got another one to bat around apparently Islanders interested kicking the tires on JJ Purka your reaction and let’s hop into it man I mean my immediate reaction is good these are the types of players that we should be kicking the tires on um not to say that it’s going to go anywhere beyond that but that’s my initial reaction like yes this is what we should be doing uh it’s great to see the new GM arguably because who knows if this is true or not but well let’s assume it is arguably looking to bring in reinforcements in the top six we’ve been wanting that for years i I’m assuming you’re having relatively the same reaction yeah and yes number one and two something that I really like and where I wanted to go first he’s 23 years old and doesn’t turn 24 until January so you know about the midway point or maybe a little less than midway point but you get the idea during the the season is when he turns 24 so he’ll start this upcoming season still at age 23 two back-to-back pretty nice goalc scoring seasons he had 28 two years ago 27 this year 68 points in 77 games you know pretty much he played two games in 21-22 but his three years in the league I think you could argue has gotten better every single year 32 points in year one up to 50 in year two as a 20 22 year old and then 68 points 27 goals in 77 games as a 23-y old to me trending in the right direction and RFA so he’s going to have to get a contract but I this is the type of player that I would be interested in for the Islanders absolutely um it’s just how much is it going to cost to pick up JJ Purker because as you said the he’s an RFA so the Buffalo Sabres are under no obligation of course they’re under no obligation to trade anyone but it seems that their hand is being forced here but Purka doesn’t want to stay for like relatively good reasons like Buffalo has been a dumpster fire for the better part of a decade if not longer um but still you’re talking about a 23-y old player who as you rightfully mentioned is only getting better was virtually a 30 goal scorer last year you said 27 goals in 77 games like I think pace-wise that ends up being 29ish rounded up um still it’s not going to be cheap do we have the assets to pull that off on top of the other things that we would like to do as well correct i think this would take the Islanders out of the Shaggens camp of getting both Schaefer and Hagens because my next thing that I was going to go to was you’re not trading the first overall pick which is their only first round pick this year you do have two first round picks next year do you think Colorado’s first is enticing enough plus something else i’m not saying like a Cal Richie but pick pick something what What do you think the the package would have to look like yeah that’s the thing that I I don’t know right i don’t know if Buffalo’s interested in more picks they’re they’re trying to get into the playoffs at some point and so the improvements need to be made now not in a couple of years from now so I don’t know if a pick a first round pick that could be a late first round pick at that next year really entices them in any way shape or form sure it’s got value but to them it’s going like great but we don’t care we need help now today and we’re losing a guy who’s only going to be getting better so we need to kind of fill that void as well um I just don’t know what it’s going to take to get him and if we have those pieces I’m bouncing around online like with different um armchair GMs if you will to see what other people have been putting forward and like it’s it’s a bunch of like they they move Purka for Dawson Mercer Sheamus Casey in like two seconds i don’t know if that’s enough man like Dawson Mercer third line player at best sheamus Casey upandcoming player right-handed defenseman but you wasn’t like crazy productive in Utah last year and then two seconds one this year and next year like this is just an example and I’ve seen relative like packages relatively close to that as well again it seems like NHL EA right we we’ve hit the value fader but does that value fader stick when you’re talking to the Buffalo GM i don’t think so no I don’t think so either right like although I get what you’re saying where they don’t want they don’t necessarily want more picks right now but could they then flip that pick in season for someone at the deadline would be my question you’re absolutely right they absolutely could so like it’s got value then it’s just if Purka’s moved it’s not going to be a draft day so I I think for us it’s kind of like a backup plan in in a way i think ultimately the goal for Metsu dash is I want Shenans and then from there if I can’t get shenans because I can’t move into the top 10 or whatever then I will use whatever assets I can to improve the club and this is a way to do it it’s just I I worry about creating that amount of value i I just don’t know if we got it you’re right the the first round pick next year from Colorado is fodder for us use it to do make these acquisitions if you can i just don’t know if Buffalo is really like salivating at the mouth to try to pick that up and that and that’s fair right like we we don’t know off the top of our heads like we don’t know what they’re what they’re interested in they might want a player but my thought here is I know the 26 draft is supposed to be better than this year’s draft class right like that’s a big talking point right now yeah i don’t know if like Colorado more than likely is picking somewhere between 25 and 32 next year would be or let’s even go even to 20 to 32 we’ll bring it way down like what if they get bounced in the first round i think they’re an obvious playoff team point being I know it’s a better class are you going to get someone who’s potentially as good as what Purka already is at that range now if it’s the Islanders pick which unfortunately I think is probably going to be closer to top 10 I would argue maybe not it might be worthwhile to hold on to that pick and take your gamble but with the bonus one that you do have even if that player were to hit like it took Brock Nelson who was taken what 30th 32nd what I forget it was like the last pick in that draft I don’t know it was 30 or 31 whichever i think it was 30 at that time but point being took him a few years simon Holford took a few years purka is going to come in is young right now you have to pay him which obviously that takes away the value of having a guy on his ELC but I think this is an ascending player who’s I think eventually going to be a 30 goal scorer um and again like that I I would like to add that if the Schaefer Hagens duo is not on the table which we we’ve talked about we both would like that and I think it’s intriguing but that’s that’s hard to pull off this feels like it’s there wouldn’t be as many moving pieces to pull this off as a Schaefer Hagen’s duo yeah yeah because we we were talking the other day about specifically on the pod um if you sign up to our patre and get the podcast patron.com/tonurbike um on how many moves it might take to pick up let specifically Higgins we we’ve already got Schaefer locked up it seems um and I’m only saying that because maybe for some odd reason they they take Misa which would be great but like anyways um to get back into the top 10 might require like two moves right they might have to trade up to like maybe Montreal’s pick at number 16 or or 17 whichever one they want and then from there move get back into the top 10 or maybe they get Anyways there’s more moving pieces you’re right to get Hagens than there is to get someone like uh like Purka i just think by the time we get around to it by the time we we were ready for our plan B there’s going to be so many other teams in there that can offer more that we’re just not going to be able to to give Buffalo what they’re looking for i think and that’s fair team other teams might have more NHL ready guys that they’re move willing to move off like Chicago as a team like would they be willing to trade Frank Nazar right like a hockey trade can be made where I don’t think we can make a hockey trade we’re we’re just trying to fill up the fill up the NHLA value and like is this enough for you Buffalo and they be like fine i I think that’s when when it comes to to Purka but ultimately this is the right thing to be doing we should be one of the teams at the table for JJ Purka whether we get him or not I’m at least happy that we’re we’re at the table declared at the table and then we we’ll see how close we get when the time comes correct and to me this is more intriguing than shelling out you know eight plus million dollars a year for like a Brock Besser type in free agency i I would personally rather go this route 1,000% right this is why we were happy when we picked up uh Alex Romanov because you’re going 22-year-old only going to be getting better this kid as you said going to be a 30 goal scorer like probably could have even been one this year on on a different team even because he was so goddamn close um he’s only going to be get better and as you said he’s only turning 24 mid-season so like there’s so many more years where he’s going to be more productive than the almost 70 point player he was already absolutely this is the type acquisitions we need to be making if we can make it absolutely so just wanted to come on here quick get our thoughts on JJ Purka let us know in the comments if you’re interested in JJ Purka number one and then number two what you would think it would take to get a guy like JJ Purka yeah I I who knows first god I I can’t even think of a dec decent package that Buffalo would want they they’ve we would need to give him like Simon Holmstrom it would have to be a hockey trade like that here’s another young forward that’s only going to get better and like a second maybe we’ll see that’ll do it for us on this one make sure to subscribe if you’re new to the channel leave a like before you head out of here and we will catch you guys next time

  1. Buffalo is desperate for a top 4 RD; could you convince Ryan Pulock to drop his no trade clause. He would be ideal for a younger Buffalo D group and even if you had to add a couple of mid round draft picks, I think this could work for both.
