SURPRISING HABS WIN-WIN TRADE: THE LEHKONEN TRADE NOW LOOKS GREAT FOR THE MONTREAL CANADIENS…

[Music] you know it’s not too often that we see ourselves a winwin trade and heck you could even debate that this is not a win-win trade you can say “Lego you are out to lunch the Montreal Canadians lost this trade.” And they lost it because the best player involved was sent away and he had a great run and now he’s much better than he was when he was with Montreal of course you can tell from the title and the thumbnail which trade it is we are referring to today we are heading over to March 21st 2021 when the Colorado Avalanche acquired forward Art Tur Lechinan from the Montreal Canadians for Justin Baron and a 2024 secondround pick now this was an interesting move at the time because a lot of Habs fans said “Hey this is a win huge win for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadians.” Because at that time Arttori Lechinan was 26 years old and his contract was set to expiring at the end of that season as an RFA he was making $2.3 million a year and in that season he had 29 points in 58 games played not bad a lot of Canadians fans will recognize that in 2019 and 2018 and 2020 and 2021 when the Canadians went to the finals Lechin was a very important player there was a lot of value that he brought not necessarily because he was a super high top point producer but because this guy worked his beehind off he was solid defensively he can just go and go and go and a lot of Habs fans respected the hell out of Lechinan because of it not to say that Lechinan was a bomb or anything but he just was not really the top guy and so with the Canadians acquiring Justin Baron a Dman who at that time was only 20 years old a right-handed top prospect out of the QMJHL a lot of Habs fans immediately saw that as a win because hey Kent Hughes is selling away assets whose contracts are expiring and he’s getting some really good young pieces in return now unfortunately for Justin Baron he didn’t really pan out with the Canadians in the way that you probably would have hoped he was okay to start things out 15 points 39 games played in his first season with Montreal but as his career continued he didn’t necessarily get any better in fact you could say that he might have gotten worse as the seasons continued which is why he eventually got traded to the Nashville Predators now this is why a lot of Canadians fans would immediately jump at the gun and say “Oh what a trade.” L Justin Baron is gone arturi Lechanin is in Colorado and guess what he’s been doing fantastically lechanin by the way he won a Stanley Cup with Colorado in his first year there shortly after getting traded to the Aves he had 14 points in 20 games in that playoff run the Avalanche were unstoppable and Lechinan inevitably panned out as a middle to top six caliber forward scoring 51 points in 64 games the next year he is almost a point per game guy lechin scored 27 goals this most recent season in only 69 games this guy is a 30goal winger and he was unfortunately never capable of doing anything remotely close to that in Montreal is that Montreal’s fault is that just an explosion of offensive prowess that was only unlockable in Colorado on Lechinan’s behalf or is it straight up just explainable by saying “Yeah the Habs are a much more inferior team than Colorado of course he’s going to get more numbers with the Avalanche.” Whether you subscribe to that idea or not the fact that Lechin got traded to Colorado for Justin Barrett and a second round pick can be seen as a lose trade for the Habs based off of what Lechin accomplished and what Baron accomplished but this is where we take a look at just the overall timeline and the trade tree as to how everything goes down because it’s true that Justin Baron is no longer with the Habs and it’s true that Artur Lechinan’s doing very well with the ABS but I wanted to refer to a post made on the RHAB sub by I can’t even imagine bro that talks about this Lechan and trade tree after selecting Artur Lechan in the second round of the 2013 draft the Habs traded Lechan into the Colorado Avalanche for Baron and a 2024 second while retaining 50% of his salary yeah the Habs traded for a 2024 pick back in 2022 it was a while ago justin Baron would then be traded to Nashville in exchange for Alexandre Kerier the 2024 second round pick that the Canadians acquired from the Lechan deal 57th overall would be traded to the LA Kings along with the Havs first round pick of 26th overall and their seventh round pick of 198th overall in exchange for LA’s first round pick at 21st overall that 21st overall pick would inevitably become Michael Hage too long didn’t read it was Artur Lechin for Kerier and Hage good or bad now just saying Lechanin Forier and H is actually inaccurate you would have to add on the extra picks that were sent away in that short LA Kings deal to make it accurate the real trade tree looks like this the Montreal Canadians sent away Artery Lechan a 2024 1st which was 26th overall and a 2024 7th which was 198th overall in exchange for a 2024 1st which was 21st overall Michael Ha and Alexandre Kerier essentially the Habs traded up in the draft from 26 to 21 using that seventh overall seventh round excuse me seventh round pick as the ammo to do so and honestly I think that’s a pretty reasonable thing to do move up five spots in the first round and it costs you a seventh to do so and you get Michael H in return pretty good this is why the trade could be seen as a win-win not because Arttorian isn’t as good as we think but because of the fact that the Habs actually did get some value here another post on the RHAB sub goes out there and says “What do you think of the fact that Lechan trade ended up bringing the Habs Kier and H many fans say it was one of the worst trades of the Gordon and Hughes era and while it’s true that Baron didn’t perform as well as he had expected I’m happy with how that trade turned out in the end also while I loved Lechinan I think it was for the best that they moved forward and I’m happy that he got his cup after the memories he brought us the top comment is the reason we are making this video big shout out over to Jane Key who went out there and said “This leanin when he was traded had his best season in the NHL of 31 points he was 27 years old and an RFA 26 I think but doesn’t matter which team holds on to this type of asset in year one of a rebuild especially when that asset could fetch a first round prospect and a second round pick the initial trade did not turn good because Baron failed and Linen is having his prime year in Colorado but disregard the outcome with the info the Canadians had at the 2022 trade deadline it’s a trade they make 10 times out of 10 this is a smart take actually while I agree with your view you could see that Lechinan was a good 2-way player that could move up and down the lineup and was capable of producing with better teammates still at the time a first which was a right-handed young D and a second round pick that was a good return and I guess even though Justin Baron did not end up performing well the fact that he turned into Alexandre Kerier I think is totally fine and the fact that Michael H is in the organization because the Habs spent away a seventh round pick to trade up to get that guy I think is also going to be very impactful for the Canadians longer term so I think it’s a win-win right the Habs got themselves some assets that are helping them today and in the future the Colorado Avalanche won a cup because Arturi Lechinan was an almost point-ame guy now he’s a staple of that middle to top six he’s very strong still very skilled and very speedy a lot of folks in Colorado love the way Lechan plays and it’s unfortunate because you can never really project him to having those same accomplishments in Montreal but I do think that it’s kind of a thing to note that yeah the trade probably was necessary based off the information the Habs had 3 years ago so with all that in mind let me know your thoughts in the comments section below how do you feel about the Canadians and the avalanche making this Lechanin for Baron for Kerier for Hage trade 3 years ago let me know in the comments all your opinions i hope you enjoyed this roll and bye [Music] [Music]

  1. Michael Hage pick was the 1st rounder from the Winnipeg Jets pick for Monahan

The 2nd rounder could have been any of the 2nd rounders Habs had…

But yes the Barron for Carrier was shrude

Too bad choosing to keep Barron out of camp and letting go of Kovacevic was the only real undisputed L in Hughes trades so far

    So basically

    Lekhonen for

    Alex Carrier
    &
    Michael Hage’s left leg

  2. At the time of that trade, Lehkonen, was basically playing 3rd/4th line minutes in MTL, mostly a PK specialist. In his top season (31pts in MTL) the top scorer on the team had 72 pts and Lehkonen was tied for 10th on the team in pts.

In Colorado, he was playing 2nd or even 1st line minutes during playoffs with the Avs. His best season was 51 pts and the top scorer had 111 pts. Lehkonen was 5th in pts that season with Colorado, but played with much more productive players.

Everyone in MTL was sad to see Lehkonen leave, but happy for him to get to play with these players in Colorado.

For MTL with that specific trade, time will tell for Hage, but he could potentially end up being as good or better than Lehkonen was in MTL.
So yeah, it could very well end up a win win trade, or even a win for MTL if Hage tops out at over 50pts at some point.

  3. Habs lost because Lehkhonen help Colorado Won the Cup, simple as that ! As long the guys involve in the trade don't bring back the cup to Montreal they lose the trade. In another words it's Stanley Cup or bust !

  4. Great way to see things. Cost you a 7th to move up in the draft.
Take it a level higher. It’s fantastic asset management. They missed on their first attempt but got it really good on the 2nd attempt. Carrier as a 4-5ish defence for leks after the year he had. Habs fan here but omg he missed so many many opportunities to get minimum 5-10 goals a year more. It was fair to think he wasn’t gonna evolve much more but very serviceable and respectable caliber player. To get a mid level dman that’s cost controled and hand handed. It fits a need we needed bad!
They hit a homerun of value on the 2nd go around after missing on Barron.

And finally so happy for leks. Brought his game to another level and cup champ! Sometimes it’s great all around and both teams hit homeruns! Took a risk and it payed off
