Brady Martin SILENCES critics with stellar dev camp: Future captain in the making?

Emma, one of the best weeks of the year has just wrapped up. Nashville Predators fans have plenty to look forward to in the pipeline after a week of development camp. Today, we’re going to share some takeaways from dev camp and the future Stars game. We’re going to talk about how these young sprouts could potentially impact the Predators team that has much that needs improved on next season. A lot to get to when we talk about Dev Camp. But before we dive into all that, we do want to let you know today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new FanDuel customers can get $150 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. All right, Emma, as they say, as peaches and herbs sing so beautifully, reunited and it feels so good. I want to give a heartfelt shout out to you and also to our lovely guest, Robbie Stanley, coming back home. Um, and uh, for holding down the Ford, had to step away from hockey last week. Uh, and man, you guys, like it was all happening like, “Hey, free agency. Hey, DevCam. Hey, Ann’s MIA. But y’all killed it. So, shout out to you and Robbie. Well, yes. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you to Robbie for coming on and joining me uh Thursday and Friday. So, uh all of our listeners did not have to listen to me blather on for three straight days. Um, I was though fortunate that uh when I did do the show solo uh last Wednesday, thankfully it was the day after free agency, so I actually had plenty of things to talk about, plenty to blather about, but it was still good to get another voice uh on the show there uh for some variety. But yeah, got lots going on. We had free agency, we had trades, we had dev camp, and and even though it was a quieter uh free agency period for Nashville this year, which I think we can all agree is a good thing. Um, still plenty to talk about. Uh, and then, you know, as you mentioned, we had the we had the little sprouts coming in for development camp. So, all kinds of things to uh to talk about there.
Yeah, action-packed week. friends do want to thank publicly again Robbie Stanley and let me just tell you a little something about Robbie Stanley. You have not enjoyed a hockey game unless you have sat next to Robbie Stanley and heard him talk under his breath about either Tommy Novak or Luke Shen. Probably the greatest experience of my life is hearing Robbie Stanley talk about Luke Shen and uh nothing nothing has been the same since those two got traded and I sat next to Robbie Stanley. Yeah, quality. High quality. Got to have you back, Robbie.
High quality. Uh, you mentioned tons to talk about free agency. We’re going to kind of dial in on dev camp. You know, people say that Christmas to New Year’s is the best week of the year. This is my favorite week of the year. Uh, dev camp I love. And I wanted to kick it off by talking about Brady Martin. And I know that you and Robbie talked some about Brady Martin as well, but Saturday we had the future stars game. Um, and he got a chance to really show off to an even larger crowd his skill set, what he brings. Emma, I’m wondering, you know, look, we got to be honest, the fan reaction to the pick, not ideal. Uh, I think a lot of people felt like this was like a culture pick and not a talent pick. Do you think Brady Martin did enough this week and in the future Stars game to put some of that chatter to rest? Yeah, I think the biggest thing here is to remember that it doesn’t have to be one or the other. It doesn’t need to be a culture pick
or a talent pick. It can be both. And I think again, I said this last week when I was talking with Robbie about, you know, the more time I spend around Brady Martin and the more time I got to talk to him this week and not only talk to him as a person, you know, of course he seems lovely, but I mean, just watch him and watch his work ethic. I understand now. I understand what Barry Truss was talking about with that sort of intangible it factor. Now, Does he have the highest ceiling? Is his ceiling higher than say James Hagens’s? Maybe not. But I think he’s going to be reliable. And I think that this like in and I I said it before in Brady Martin, the Predators have selected their future captain. Yes. guy who again not just a good culture guy, a good like well he you know can’t score but you know by gosh he has heart and I think that’s what people are expect like that’s what people are thinking with this pick and you realize that’s that’s not it and when I say he has offensive upside don’t just mean that like he might chip in a point or two here and there I mean like he’s gonna he’s gonna help drive the offense and like Again, he may not be a Mitch Marner or an Austin Matthews, but he’s going to, you know, so he may not be like an 80 90 point game player, but he will be probably like a consistent 60 65 point player, but who brings so much more than just what he does on the ice. I mean, this is this is a culture pick, but it’s also a talent pick. And I think people were getting too hung up on one or the other, and it’s just not that with Brady Martin.
I love that. I think that is the biggest takeaway for me from uh Dev Camp, from the opportunity to talk with him and to see him a little bit uh up close in action on the ice against, you know, his peers. I think you have to understand that while what was highlighted with this pick from Barry Trotz was it factor, the IT factor, this, you know, intangibles. There are tangibles. And I think everybody in Nashville needs to hear that there are tangibles, high quality tangibles. And I agree with you. I don’t think that we’re gonna look at Brady Martin and I love your comparisons, Mitch Marner, you know, I don’t know that we’re gonna see him as that like flashy, unbelievable, dynamic guy, but we are going to see this player. I really feel like we are going to see this player elevate this franchise when he gets to the NHL level. That is who he is. And and I think it’s so important that people understand that while Barry Trotz talked about the IT factor, while the media focused on the farming and the hard work ethic that comes with that, this is a kid who is a talented hockey player on a number of levels. And we got a chance to see that at Dev Camp. And I think that that’s something that should make Predators fans feel better about it. What was highlighted about him is true. What wasn’t maybe talked about as much is also true. I can’t remember. You know, I’m not great on my Spanish, but you used to have a saying, why not both in Spanish? What was that? I can’t remember it.
Porquos do. That’s the uh from the old El Paso taco commercials. Um I can’t take credit for that. But yeah, no, it is both. And I agree with you. Definitely the narrative around him, you know, from the media and and everything was that like, oh, he’s farm tough and, you know, isn’t this neat? And like you talked about an like growing up on a farm was equivalent to growing up on Mars based on, you know, a lot of the media coverage. And it’s like, okay, yes, this is something that’s true about him. Um, but that doesn’t mean that it’s, you know, he’s not also a highly skilled player and and we got to see that a little bit this week.
We had a chance to talk with Brady Martin after the future stars game where he scored a goal. He he looked great in that future stars game. I’m just telling you all, if you didn’t get a chance to see the game, Brady Martin looked like the kid he picked at five overall. Uh, got a chance to talk to him. He talked about, you know, dev camp, what he was taking away from it, the challenges of dev camp. And then he also talked a little bit more about his relationship with Andrew Gibson. This is what Brady Martin had to say.
Got to come prepared. I think it’s it was a lot harder than I expected. So yeah, I know to come in here prepared and be ready to do all the fitness testing and stuff, I think, is a huge thing. And yeah, they take it very seriously here. So be ready.
Well, I think you’re coming out, you just finished your season, you’re coming into the summer. You don’t really start training yet. And I think that’s just a big thing for me. I hadn’t started training. I think then you jump into doing fitness testing and we’re running on the track and stuff. So, I think that was just a big part of it for me. I’ve known Gibby for a couple years now and I I love him. He’s uh he’s one of my best buddies. So, playing against him is always a lot of fun. We chirp each other and he was miked up today. So, hopefully I didn’t say anything too bad. Okay. I have to wonder if Brady Martin is one of those people whose like best curse word is gosh darn it. I don’t know. We’ll find this out if Gibson was miked up. But he just there is something and you know we’re talking about hey pay attention to his skill. Pay attention to what he can bring on the ice. There is an IT factor with Brady Martin. And I don’t know I I don’t agree with Barry Trotz on a lot. I know we have a lot of questions about Barry Trotz, but I get it. I get what he was saying. when you talk to this young man for 5 minutes, you walk away going, there’s something about this kid, and I agree with you. I think you look at Brady Martin, you talk to Brady Martin, and and you’re like, this is somebody who is going to become a a leader. He reminds me, and I hate to make this comparison, and I don’t make it lightly, and we’ve said it before, he is a young Ryan O’Reilly, you all. That is who he reminds me of, a young Ryan O’Reilly where like a couple of words and you would follow him into battle. So there there’s just something about him. I also love the fact that there’s like six degrees of Kevin Bacon happening with the prospects between Andrew Gibson and Cameron Reed and Brady Martin and all of this. So I just, you know, I think I walked away from watching Brady Martin on the ice feeling even better about this pick. Yeah, I think you know Ryan O’Reilly is a good Pred comparison. And I know Robbie and I talked a little bit last week how he could be like, you know, a a Jonathan Taves type too where it’s like really strong leader, you know, maybe not just that like point producing machine, but he’s going to be like a solid 60point guy
who’s going to lead your troops into battle and you would follow him to the ends of the earth and he’s going to make everyone around him better. So, like I said, the more I spend time around him, the more I get it. I still get why fans were maybe upset that that, you know, they they didn’t go with Hagens or Martone at number five. But when you’re thinking about it, if you’re Barry Trotz, you need to prepare for life after Roman Yosi, for life after Philip Forsber, Ryan O’Reilly, etc. Like, you need to be prepared for that. And it’s not just from a well who’s going to take his place on the ice like who who are you know who are going to replace them on the ice but it’s how do we build a new core. This is the kind of kid that you start with. Um and I think they’ve got a really good starting spot here.

Certainly a pleasant surprise uh I think for everybody. There were a couple of other I think surprises for me watching some of these young players and the first one that pops into my mind is Riker Lee. Uh, of course he was drafted 26th overall just over a week ago. He was ranked as high as 23rd as low as 67th in a lot of mock drafts. Kind of averaged, you know, expected to be picked around 36. So, this was a pick that I think a lot of Predators fans who had seen Mox, who had sort of seen rankings were like, I’m sorry, what 26 like what are what are we doing? Is Barry Trotz going off in the jinge for a player with like a motor or something and everybody else around him is drafting for pure talent. This again, I come back to Riker Lee. This is a talent pick. He knocked my socks off this week. Um Brady Martin said uh he was talking about Riker Lee and he said he has never seen anyone with better hands. Um and I think anybody who saw the Future Stars game had to have been very surprised pleasantly about what he can do with the puck. His puck handling skills, his his stick handling skills, the way that he navigates the ice offensively. I was really surprised by this because there have been a lot of questions about Riker Lee through, you know, leading up to the draft and even after Nashville selected him. So, for me, this was a huge and very pleasant surprise. Yeah, I mean, this is a player that I don’t think we knew much about uh in general beforehand. So, uh, really good to see him and and I think he looked comfortable out there like especially in the the future stars game. You know, sometimes you see the firstear players uh up against, you know, guys like Matthew Wood who’ve done this quite a few times and they like sometimes you can tell they look a little out of their element and that’s okay. You know, it’s their first time. But, I mean, he was one that stood out to me as looking very confident, very comfortable, like he belonged there. Yeah, some of the criticisms going into the draft for him, you know, people talked about like he’s probably not super fast. Like he’s great at puck handling, great at kind of uh going down the middle, which is not easy to do in the NHL when you get to that level. It’s not easy to play the game exactly the way Riker does. Also, people talked about his size. First of all, friends, let’s hear it for Riker Lee, who grew five inches last year. Remember, they’re not done growing. They are children.
They are baby sprouts. Um, so I think there was concern about like, okay, if the NHL is going towards this bigger, more physical style of play, how is, you know, Riker Lee going to fit in? Well, give him time. The other thing that, you know, like I said, people have kind of been mindful of as as they’ve evaluated him going into the draft is like, this is a kid who’s probably not super fast. And again, the league is getting bigger. The league is getting faster. But one of the things that I thought was really interesting is that Riker talked about his biggest takeaway from Dev Camp was the skating sessions and talking about like working with the state skating coach, working on his stride. And I think that when that is a criticism of a player, you have to be mindful of it, but you also have to realize that that is something that you can teach or you can, you know, improve over the course of his development in the pipeline. And so, you know, hearing those criticisms and then seeing him perform and then talking with him, I thought, okay, this is a kid who reminds me in some ways of the puck handling Jenna Sequa of Philip Forsber. Like he reminded me a lot of like, you know, Philip Forsber does those things and you’re like, I’m sorry, what? I see some of that in Riker Lee and I think that’s really exciting. I was so pleasantly surprised by what we saw from him. Yeah, I think you know talking about the skating and um things like that and again still not fully grown. These kids are not coming in fully cooked yet in any regard. So like that’s one of those things where it’s like just give it time. I mean of course there’s so many things that are not that can’t be taught, right? But like that that sort of puck handling that he’s already doing at such a high level. He’s also I will say for someone who is maybe not the fastest guy right now um there are ways that you can sort of not make up for it but like there there are things you can do that can sort of help offset uh if you have a lack of speed. like he was very I would say slippery. Um he he was a guy who was really really good at like just at the last minute at the perfect moment just diving right out of the way or you know changing directions really quickly and just avoiding those hits at the last minute. So it’s like again maybe he’s not the fastest skater but he has you know like what he can do well is read the game. he can see what’s happening around him and he can make those quick decisions to get out of the way and you know avoid putting himself in a position where he’s going to get caught out of place. So, I think that um yeah, like to me I’m watching him I would it wasn’t like it stuck out to me immediately like, oh, who’s the slow guy? Like I I just don’t think that, you know, it’s it’s as bad. Of course, a lot of this stuff gets exaggerated, you know, throughout the the draft process and the scouting process. And people hear things and they run with it, right? It’s like, oh, Riker Lee is the guy who can’t skate. And it’s like, no, that’s not all he is. Like, and also, he looked pretty good.
Yeah, he did. And of course, there is a big jump from the USHL where he played last season. He’s headed off to Michigan State as a Penn State person. I’m just going to go with it, but whatever. Um, so there’s going to be a leap there for him. And, you know, there’s always, you know, just adjustments to be made as you move to a different level. And of course the NCAA is not the same as the AHL and NHL. So of course again hard to predict but what we saw from him made me feel better again about okay Barry Trotz is not off in the jing weeds just picking guys he likes you know again friends talent pick. This was a talent pick and I think it’s important when you look at you know the future stars game dev camp Emma what was a surprise to you? Was there a player that stood out to you positively or negatively that you were like, “Okay, something I noticed or something I didn’t notice.” Um, well, I know this is going to sound like a Homer pick because I talk about him a lot, but Andrew Gibson I thought looked fantastic.
Come on.
I thought he looked fantastic all week. He looks NHL sized. Like he’s gotten cut. He’s gotten bigger. Um, and you know, he’s got that he can score, he can block shots, he can do it all. So, he he was one that really um stood out to me in a positive way. Um, in a also in a positive way, I would say the goalender specifically um Jack Ivan Kovic and then Jacob or Yakob Melada Meloda. Um I thought in the future Stars game especially both looked really really strong in net. Um and and those were guys that you know we don’t see as much I guess especially uh you know Meloda playing over like not obviously hasn’t been you know in the minor league system yet. So we haven’t really gotten to see or hear a lot about him. So I thought that was that was really positive. Um, interesting. And I I hate to pick on him because, you know, it it doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but I remember a guy who really stood out to me at last year’s development camp where I was like, whoa. And then same thing during rookie camp, I was like, whoa. And then this year, didn’t really notice him that much. Uh, Joey Willis. Joey Willis, not
I didn’t like he kind of disappeared for me out there a little bit.
Yeah. Um, again, could be nothing. I’m I’m not really concerned about it. I don’t think he’s suddenly, you know, forgotten how to play hockey. I just from it was a noticeable drop off from being one of the guys who like really sort of made a, you know, a lasting impression to one guy that was kind of like, “Oh, yeah. I kind of forgot he was here. I think I just didn’t really see him.” Yeah. No, I would agree with that. And he’s coming off of a great season. And I agree with you. it, you know, it may mean nothing, but it was just of note. I felt that way about David Edstrom. This is a player that they got through the Yuruslav Ascarov. Nailed it. Uh, trade and somebody that I think there’s a lot of hope for. And he was somebody that I felt like maybe disappeared a little bit in the background at at Dev Camp when I think this is somebody that they’re really wanting to see kind of take some steps. Now, he did not have a ton of time in the AHL last season. So, it’s still very early on and certainly not writing any of these players off, but just players that you were like, “Hey, was kind of hoping we were going to see something and and maybe this was a year that we didn’t notice as much.” Not speaking anything over it, just of note. Coming up, I want to talk about one other player that I think stood out and then Emma and I are going to discuss could any of these guys actually crack the NHL roster. All right, Emma, just have to talk about Igor Surin for for just a minute because if you want to talk about um players that I think stood out, of course, he came in last year. He was the first round pick last year and this is one of those charisma guys where you just instantly like him. You instantly connect to him. This is somebody that you know this fan base is going to adore him. Came back this year and there was so much more I sir in there. I do not know how to say built like a brick poop house in Russian, but I would say that about Igor Surin. It was like and he was not small last year, but he came back and it just he is a large man. What is so funny is that when he was asked about it, he’s like, “No, you haven’t seen any Russian players.” Yeah. He was like, “You think I’m big and strong?” Really? Well, you haven’t seen Russian players. It’s like, well, I think the year playing with and against those big Russian players has done him some good because I agree like I would say I don’t know if this makes any sense. I would say last year when we first met him, when we first saw him,
he looked like a big kid. Just a big husky kid. This year he came in, he looks like a man. if that makes sense. Like he’s grown into his frame some more. He’s not just like an oversized boy. Like now he looks like a man.
Um and I think that again he he may not think he’s big and strong compared to the Russian players. And and he was telling us too how, you know, like grueling that schedule has been for him because, you know, he finished the KHL season. He went, I think he said he was training in Florida. Um came up here for camp. he left. He went back to Russia over the weekend and then July 19th is when training camp starts for the KHL. So, he’s just been non-stop training, which I’m sure that has been, you know, definitely we’re we’re seeing the results of that. But again, he’s not just a guy who’s barreling through people and just knocking them over. I mean, he does that and he does it very well, but another guy who’s actually like he’s got some scoring touch, too. like he it’s not just going to be like fourthline bruiser I don’t think like he’s he’s got some more you know some more skill there as well. I loved what we saw from him this season and this is my favorite thing about dev camp is you see them unfortunately we don’t see a lot of these players through the season they come back and so you have this more black and white comparison of growth and with Igor Surin you could tell I felt like especially in the future stars game this is a player who has played with men in the KHL who knows how aggressive you have to be who who is picked up on the smaller parts of the game at a top level that you have to have to compete in eventually the NHL. You know, everything from, you know, his stick work, from his defense, you know, I just felt like everything was elevated from him. And also, this young man is delight such a delight. He was talking about and and credit to him, his English I thought was fabulous, but was talking about coming in and he loves to be here and he’s meeting all these friends and connecting with people, but then he was talking about how in Russia they don’t all talk all the time. There’s just always talking going on and he was like, I have to go in a room by myself sometimes because everybody’s talking all the time. But I just he was talking about like lunch breaks in particular where it’s like the team here the guys are like oh this is social hour you know it’s lunchtime we talk whatever and that’s when he was like I’m not used to that like I had to go like sit by myself for a minute cuz I’m just not used to that and I just I thought it was I do think his English has gotten better since last year as well. Um, I do I love it though because he always calls it he did this last year too where he talks about his uh you know the fellow prospects is all my friends. I get to see all my friends. I’m like oh so sweet.
Somebody make him a bracelet.
I know. I’m like you just we walked out from you know talking to him on Saturday and we’re like do you not just want to bake him cookies?
100%. 100%.
Yeah. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with him next season because again, you’re talking about the off seasonason. This is a very different off seasonason for a player like Igor Surin who played all the way through the postseason to the championship who then immediately came here, come to dev camp going back right back at it very different off season than a lot of players have. Brady Martin talked about this, Riker Lee talked about this. You know, you’re doing the combine, you’re doing all of the things, you’re doing the draft. And while that may not be physical, it is mental. It is emotional and then you come right to development camp and then you’re moving on to the next thing. So, a very different offseason for a lot of these players. It’s going to be interesting to watch them moving forward. Emma, we’ve seen some of these young sprouts over the course of the week. You know, Barry Trotz has talked about Brady Martin’s going to have a chance to crack the roster. Who do you think has the best chance of getting NHL time, whether it is right out of the gate, out of training camp, or eventually? Who is the player that you’re like, “This is somebody I want to see in Predators Gold this season?” You know, as far as I I’m not going to say that this is someone who will necessarily crack the roster out of camp just because of the current roster construction, but I think a guy will absolutely see at some point is Tanner Mullandike. Um, but after watching this week in particular,
I am I am itching to see Andrew Gibson. I really want to see him now. Yes. Now, I again, another guy I don’t think should be rushed to the NHL because again,
defenseman typically defenseman and goalenders take a little bit longer to develop and that’s fine. And he hasn’t, you know, Gibson just, you know, finished his junior career. He hasn’t played in the AHL yet. I think playing in the American League with Milwaukee will be really, really good for him. But he’s one that I could see kind of like Mullandike last year. You know, they kept him around for a while after all the other players in junior had been cut and gone back to their respective teams. Tanner Mullandike was still here. And I think if Andrew Gibson looks anything like he did this week, you know, when he comes back for rookie camp and training camp, I would I would really like to see him stick around for longer because I think that he looks like he looks ready. I mean, I I’m not saying that he is. I think that again, I still would like to see him get a little bit of time in the AHL first. Um, but he just he looks really good. It was like, you know, you watch these different levels of prospects and he just seemed kind of head and shoulders above everyone else. And not not just in his size, but I mean like the the way he played as well. And so he’s one that that I think has made a very marketked improvement from last year to this year. um and would fill quite the uh need on the Predators roster as a right shot defenseman because goodness knows
those one of those.
No.
Yeah,
I agree with you and I know everybody’s talking about Tanner Mullandike and rightly so. Look friends, this is what’s real and I know we’ve said it and I hate to even say it again, but the truth is when you watch Tanner Mullandike skate, it is like watching Monae paint in a room full of kindergarteners fingerpainting. It is astounding the amount of ice he covers and the way that he does it in his efficiency. I mean, he is it is really incredible to watch Mullandike. But when I walked away from this week, I was like, Andrew Gibson, Andrew Gibson. And you know, the the tricky thing about Dev Camp is that in some ways this is more peer-to-peer. You know, they’re all in different parts of their development. Some are in juniors, some are in NCAA, you know, so they’re in different parts of their development. I really think Andrew Gibson is going to look even better in training camp. I’m very curious to see him against a Philip Forsber, a Ryan O’Reilly, a Steven Stamos, because it was such a market difference from last year where he was very good and made a huge impression to this year. I mean, it really was this is a next level player and you know, I we knew he was going to be good. I really feel like you I’m like, you know, let’s you know, Tanner Mullandike agree with that. Andrew Gibson is going to give somebody a run for their money in this lineup. And I am very excited to see him at training camp against NHL experienced players because I just I he looks so good. So good.
Yeah. You know, it looked like he had outgrown the prospect showcase game.
Perfect way to describe it. Yeah.
It looked like he had outgrown it. Now, don’t know for sure that he’s ready to play with the big boys in the NHL. We won’t know until like you said training camp, but it’s clear that he is like graduated to some sort of next level. Um because again it it was kind of a man among boys. Um and Mullandike as well, but again Mullandike was kind of already at that level and he still looks to be at that level. Gibson was just I think he stood out to me more because the improvement just yearover-year was so great. Um, and we almost maybe didn’t expect it. We’ve kind of come to expect it from Mullandike, but um, you know, like I don’t know, Gibson was just one that really stood out and I love talking to him, too.
I was just going to say, you know, we we talk about like, you know, these are talent picks. We’re talking about talent. We’re talking about talent.
Andrew Gibson is high quality human. I I am with you. He knocked my socks off last year in talking with him and just the maturity that he has, the the just comfortability in himself, just person. I don’t know. There is something about him. There is something about Andrew Gibson off the ice that I think is is high value as well. Delightful. Delightful young man. Delightful young man. So I I agree with you. You know, you go in and you’re like, “Of course it’s going to be Tanner Mullandike.” And it very well may be Tanner Mullandike, but Andrew Gibson, he showed up this week and uh it was exciting to see. So, a lot going on with the Predators young ones. Still a lot that needs to happen with some of the Predators veterans. That’s something we’re going to talk about also this week. What do we need to see from the Nashville Predators moving forward to Oh my gosh, please not have a repeat of the last 84 years. Emma and I cannot take it. So, we’re going to be talking about that as this week moves on as well. Emma, before we wrap up our talk about these prospects and devamp, will you let everyone know where they can find you and your work?
Yes, you can find me on social media at Emma Lingan and you can find my work at the hockey news. You can find me on social media at ank_mama on ice. You can find my work with penalty radio as well. Welcome back, Ann! It’s cool to see all these young dudes getting to play. I gotta say, O’Hara’s goal was a thing of beauty! I really wanna see Molendyk and Gibson in gold this season!
Picking Martin was definitely a bit of whiplash at first but I pretty quickly came around, i might be nashvilles biggest Martin Stan now. I cannot wait for this kid to "crack the roster"
