Cleveland Browns Training Camp Preview: Shedeur Sanders, Quarterback Battle + Injury News
Rookies report to Cleveland Browns training camp tomorrow, Friday, July 18th. So, let’s run through some of the big storylines to get you guys ready for training camp. Just things to keep an eye on as we get closer and closer to football coming back. Once again, football’s not back until NFL week one kicks off. But I’ve got a few storylines, three to be exact, that I just want to remind you all because I feel that during that lull between the end of mandatory mini camp and the start of training camp, that like four to six weekish period, we kind of forget about, hey, what’s going on with this team? Not that the Browns make it easy to forget about what’s going on with this team. So with that, we’ll talk about rookies reporting first. They come on Friday the 18th. Veterans Report July 22nd, so just four days later. I don’t believe Quinn Sean Judkins is going to be reporting. He hasn’t signed his contract yet. Most second round draft picks have not signed theirs. And I don’t think the Browns have a contract in front of him to sign. I’m guessing after his arrest for domestic violence and the details that came out with it, they’re not really rushing him to sign that contract. So, that’s a story in of itself, but we’ll put that to the side because there are 89 other players on this team that I want to talk about a little bit. So, let’s run through three things to keep an eye on during training camp at the beginning stages. Starting with the quarterback battle. Obviously, have to lead off with this one. I’m gonna say that it is my favorite quarterback battle across the NFL because it is truly the most up in the air one. It feels like I’m going to put the edge to Joe Flacco. He’s just got the most experience. I mean, he’s got more experience than the other three guys combined. And then even if you combine their experience and times it by infinity almost, it feels like Joe Flacco still has more experience. So, it’s my favorite quarterback battle because even though you do have a veteran, four names to watch for, and then there’s Deshaawn Watson, who we just hardly even talk about. Um, you know, still lurking in the background a little bit. There’s a lot of moving pieces here. Here is my I wouldn’t say prediction, but more of a here’s my um stab at what’s going to happen early on because prediction makes it sound like, hey, this is going to be the end result. I think at the beginning we’re going to see a lot of Kenny Picket. I think the Browns want to see if Picket can be their long-term quarterback. Can he be this year’s Sam Darnold, right? The revival project. Same thing we saw with Baker in Tampa, Gino in Seattle. They are going to give him the opportunity to prove himself as a long-term starting quarterback that was taken first round by the Steelers for a good reason, because he’s got first round talent. If that doesn’t work out with the first team offense and defense, they’ll sprinkle in Dylan Gabriel and Shador Sanders. Probably not going to see a ton of them wi-i with the first team offense and defense. a run here or there, but it’s just not very common for rookie quarterbacks taken beyond round one to get a lot of looks with a first team offense because there are other players on the team that need to be addressed and reviewed. And if the offense can’t get anything going because the rookie quarterback is in way over his head, then you’re doing a disservice to the offensive line, to the wide receivers that can’t properly run a two-minute drill because there’s a puppy at quarterback who just isn’t ready for that yet. Is not ready for Denzel Ward and Miles Garrett to be breathing down his neck. Every so often we see a shocker of a later to mid-round pick quarterback blow us away. Dak Prescott, Russell Wilson, that’s about it. And those are two examples in a 15ish year span. So it’s not common. So I’m not going to put a ton of, you know, ton of uh stock into that. But keep an eye on the quarterbacks. I’m gonna expect a lot of Kenny Picket early on. And I think the Browns do this because they know they’ve got old reliable Joe Flacco that they can always go to if Picket isn’t, you know, living up to their expectations. All right, moving on to the second thing to watch for. It’s kind of a combo of my second and third thing. It’s mostly centered around health because we know the Browns the last few years have really struggled with this. But I want to zero in on one player specifically, Cedric Tilman. How does Cedar Tilman look as a wide receiver, too? He looked really good in a small sample size last year after Amari Cooper was traded until he got concussed and missed the last third of the season. So, how does he bounce back from that, right? Is he 100% healthy? Is that concussion lingering a little bit? And if he is 100% healthy, is he cut out to be a number two in the NFL? Can he complement Jerry Judy on the other side? I’m excited to see this and hopefully the Browns have some positivity in the momentum category going at receiver beyond Jerry Judy who was fantastic last year. So, let’s keep an eye on Tilman from a health perspective and also just from a pure football perspective. Does this guy look the part of a number two for an offense? Right. If the Browns run into Patan or Sauce Gardner or Derek Stingley, right, one of those lockdown corners and Judy at halftime’s got one reception for 12 yards. Is there someone on the other side of the field stepping up? And I hope that someone is said. All right, moving on to the third thing I want to put on your radar for training camp. Health. Similar to Tilman, but more specific to some other players. Starting with the offensive line, Andrew Barry learned his lesson last off season about not jinxing the progress of offensive linemen coming back from injuries. So, I’m keeping an eye on Dewan Jones. How much availability do we get from him early on? Right. Last year had some good moments at left tackle until yet another season ending injury. So, does Dwan Jones come in with his weight under better control? Because you got to think that you don’t have to be a scientist to know, hey, when you’re 400 pounds, you’re putting a lot of stress on your joints, on your knee, on your ankle. So maybe getting some of the bad weight off of you and getting it down to a more manageable weight, 375, right? Lose 25, 30 pounds of just, let’s call it fat, and you’re going to be in a better spot conditioning wise and, you know, long-term healthwise. So, how does Don Jones look if he is still shaky because he did get a second surgery? No, Mike Hall got the second surgery or got Yeah. Anywh who, um, if Dwan Jones is still a little bit shaky, watch for Kevin Jenkins. He was a second round pick by the Bears four, five years ago. And when healthy, he was the best player on Chicago’s offensive line. He is when healthy. He missed a lot of time and he also missed a lot of snaps, meaning he would start a game but not finish the game. So, he played tackle at Oklahoma State. He was a stud in college, had a back injury towards the end of his time in Still Water and that caused him to slip into round two and since playing for the Bears, he’s had a variety of issues with his uh health. And then Mike Hall, he got that knee injury and then got another surgery on it. I I think we all kind of forgot about it, but I’m curious to see what his health is going into training camp. Does he begin the summer on the pup list, right? Do they shut him down for the first couple of weeks? Remember last year when the Browns reported to Greenbryer? We were all shocked when the Browns said, “Hey, Greg Newsome and Dalvin Tomlinson, they’re on the pup list.” Like, oh, did not know they suffered injuries. Yep. Newsome with a hamstring and uh Tomlinson with a knee injury. So be ready for pupilist overload the next few days as teams start reporting to training camp. Guys who we just thought and hoped would get 100% over the off season need some more time and teams aren’t going to rush them in mid to late July when games aren’t played until September. All right, that will do it for us on today’s episode. Thank you guys so much for tuning in. I look forward to seeing you all towards the start of next week. [Music]

So ready for NFL season, it’s coming!!!
Is it true that Jimmy H that he wants Sheduer Sanders to start??? Judkins is not going to be with the Browns with have a one year contract with restrictions.
Breaking TJ Watt 3 year – $123 million deal
I agree: Judquins wont be at camp. Browns will suspend him for his bad behavior. They wont sign him either. They will wait until after the trial and the verdict or after the settlement. The contract will be small, compared to what it would have been, if he wasnt a domestic abuser. As a Browns fan, I think he is toxic and of low moral character. I want the Browns to trade him. We should trade an RB that everyone likes. Its stupid to hold onto a guy that everyone hates.
I can’t stand hearing non players talk about players not being ready with conviction as of their ego and fandom gives them some sort of credibility. Report like a fan if that what you are otherwise put substance to the why and why not rather than a history or of rookies Qb stigma that you’re to young to understand.
Dude what are you talking about
Dude Kenny Pickett will be traded
Just a little consistency at the QB position would be nice. Build around someone.
Shouldn’t the Browns sign him before the season starts as games before he’s signed wouldn’t count towards his suspension?
I couldn’t be more disappointed with Judkins. He needs to go, like out of the league. There is no way I’m cheering for a woman beater. So he will be a waste of a second round pick to go along with out wasted 3rd and 5th round picks. What a disaster
Brock Purdy?
