Dodgers postgame: Dave Roberts criticizes Shohei Ohtani, frustrated by loss, Michael Conforto
[Music] Dave, you look at just the offense. I know we’ve talked about kind of just the at bats, but when you see so many walks, hits, things like that, and different opportunities that you guys gave yourself, how frustrating would it be just knowing that you’re giving yourself a chance, ultimately unable to turn this into a run into a win? Um it’s yeah I mean I I thought there was a lot of good um some things that were not so good. Um but yeah we we gave ourselves opportunities I thought you know taking walks and and creating stress building innings but we just couldn’t get that um hit different opportunities that we had to kind of put this game out of reach. Blake said just with those two home runs today location. What have you been seeing from him since he’s come off the um I I I think it’s just the command. I I think um you know you get Vlatty 02 and then you hang a sweeper and obviously a lot of power and then you try to go I think with the back bling ball to larger and it was middle middle and um so that’s just kind of the command and you know the stuff can be good but you still got to make good pitches and certainly when you get count leverage you got to be able to uh you know try to get soft count contact or swing and miss and um you know right now I think that, you know, in times she’s getting behind, but yeah, I think the stuff is good, but I think it’s just more so just kind of tightening up the command. Is that one of those things that just byproducts of time? I think so. I I think so. Um, you know, obviously he’s in a good place as far as physically, healthwise, but then, you know, I think he’s had probably what, four or five outings. So, just kind of getting that dialed in, get to rhythm, and and getting kind of the ball where it needs to be. of so many choices in the bullpen, but you know, could he maybe be a candidate to get some lower leverage spots trying it until he’s looking a little sharper? Um, yeah. Yeah. I mean, I I think that, you know, he’s got a, you know, he has some right-handers and so it’s kind of he’s the guy and but yeah, I mean, we got other guys, too. I mean, you got to look at sort of the options and who pitched prior and um kind of then make decisions. Um but yeah, I mean, it it’s kind of but we still needed to be good. Yeah. Is it more frustrating when you have a game like this where you have all those chances and you don’t cash them in or is it more frustrating when nobody’s on base? This was frustrating. Um this is frustrating because I just felt there’s no way we should lose this game today. um given the pitching performance that we got from glass and um you know they expended everyone in the pen and we had them on the ropes numerous times and for us not to win today is uh just a frustrating one and showing a bat and the bases lost felt really good. Yeah, we felt good. We felt good and and you know the last thing I was thinking you know he was going to strike out but in that situation you know a guy doesn’t have a big fast ball and you got to stay in the middle of the field and and that’s just we got to come up with one right there and you know chasing the ball down below is something that we can’t that you know that you know we can’t have happen with that do you think how do you feel about sort of his approach that obviously got a good pitch but off I mean you can’t ask for a better pitch uh you you get into account 3-1. Um where 3-2 then we’re out to you know throw something softer but 3-1 you get a pitch that’s you couldn’t put it on the team better and we got him moving forward to steering six is that his young that was his decision not a good baseball player. What have you seen out of Anthony Don in the second half where he’s been able to really turn things around and be more of a bright spot for the bull? Yeah, Anony’s been good. He’s thrown the baseball well. um you know getting on some left-handers and I think the the slider the stuff is really good and he’s doing a really nice job for us. Uh you know call it fun. Thanks guys.
Manager Dave Roberts was frustrated by the Los Angeles Dodgers losing to the Toronto Blue Jays, Michael Conforto’s at-bat, Shohei Ohtani being caught stealing and Blake Treinen’s struggles.

Roberts, you always publicly criticize Ohtani, but you never criticize Mookie or Freddie. We lost today because of a sloppy relief pitcher! It's all Roberts' fault for making mistakes, so instead of defending the players, you criticize Ohtani in front of the press. Ohtani is the reason the Dodgers are still in first place!
Your poor coaching decisions lost the game again you dumba$$. Conforto batting in the 8 th, WTF
It was a mild criticism, no big deal.
Shohei is lucky that the Dodgers got 3 aces to cushion his limited outings and enable a 6 men rotation (the dodgers might not be doing that now). The Angels couldn't do this. Not many other teams in baseball could do this. The Dodgers probably should not have traded May.
Ohtani must own up on this lost … he did choke up when playing for the Angels as well … just get stronger in impact batting performance in preparation for the post season … no blame game here .. get ready for the real game
As long as Roberts' been with the Dodgers, I've never heard him said ONCE that "this one is on ME"! Own it, you cost us the game with at least 3-4 idiotic mistakes, you moRon!!! Fire his ass, he didn't deserve the new contract signed during the off season period.
This dude is not the brightest bulb on the tree. This organization will gladly replace you 100 times over rather than throwing Ohtani under the bus.
Why Conforto? Have a very bad performance, terrible ‼️⚠️❌
Fire Roberts! Couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag. Almost blew the trade for Sho' and now disses him. Roberts always deflects to protect himself. Better win the WS ring or your….is grass. And Im 50+ year Dodger fan. Firing Mattingly was the start to this.
Blew it at the trade deadline!
The pitching sucked. The end.
I'm wondering if this game and this presser is the beginning of the end for Dave Roberts. Only time will tell I know .. Don't jump my ass for simply posing this question. It just seems like he is not taking very much accountability for these loses that seem preventable and we are now almost half way through August. I thought for sure we were going to win today and 2 bases loaded situations with not shit to show for it is a hard pill to swallow my fellow Dodger fans. So frustrated in today's game and I have serious Roberts fatigue . I hope I didn't offend any of you because in the end we all want our team to win and win big .
OHTANI is a good PLAYER and the DODGERS premiere player, and my favorite player but he's not a CLUTCH athlete, he virtually never has a walk-off, just like in the WORLD SERIES where he basically was non-existent
Fire an idiot Roberts ..Freedman can't .Ohtani 41HR. Betts+Freeman+Smith together 40 HR and being protected by Roberts🥸Ohtani should leave Dodgers !
Dave Roberts is the problem, has been for years. Dodgers front office is clueless. Spending billions of dollars on rosters over the years and idiot Roberts just wastes talent. Mookie is washed up, he's afraid to get hit, never hustles. Conforto is absolute trash and Roberts leaves him in there.
All this over just one day’s results. Some noble Dodgers fans treat Ohtani like trash and even bring up nonsense about him not speaking English. Don’t forget he leads the team in batting stats and leads all of MLB in WPA and high leverage. You would never dare treat other proud players that way, but with Ohtani you do.
Roberts is still coaching the Dodgers? How and why?
🐘 in the room..,no one cares to notice nor address once in fact noticed? "Flinging Of Sunflower Seeds" whilst folks are starving, right outside Chavez Ravine..,in "Skid Row" (Why am I so concerned? I sincerely want Success for Dodgers..,no hate here!)
Coach Roberts does not criticize American star players Freeman, Betts, or Smith. He only strongly criticizes Japanese player Shohei Ohtani in front of the media when he makes a poor play.
It's too greedy to ask Shohei Otani for 41 home runs, SP、clutches, and stealing bases. Don't forget that it's your responsibility to gave to him green light permission.
Sometimes you should mention your own responsibility
Ohtani is the best fucking baseball player on the planet, especially when he's basically able to pitch and hit in the same day and same season.
Take this coming from a Yankee fan.
It’s almost impressive how many close games you’ve lost with your amazing calls. Of course, he’s back to publicly shaming the Asian players who never dare to complain
Fire roberts
This was a strange mix of comments from Roberts. He seems to blame Ohtani, when numerous players failed to deliver with RISP and Betts followed Ohtani with a ground-out. The last two relievers blew the lead. Further, I thought Glasnow was erratic–very good at times but also inconsistent, allowing two runs and some walks. Strikeouts alone are not the only measure of a pitcher's success.
Those words will come back to haunt him. Ohtani is the most consistent out there for a while now, regardless of him happening to be the best player in the sport of the history. Clearly, we’re seeing on display why some of his other players stay at a lower performance because he doesn’t hold them accountable. Ohtani Gods will be upset.
It is Robers who is to blame. It is evident to everyone.
Cmon people! Ohtani strikes out entirely too much! Its the managers job to call everyone out – especially his brightest child! Ohtani must understand that to whom much is given, much is expected. Stop swinging at trash with a driver, when all you need is to do nothing, or chip!! (See FFreeman)
Ohtani is great, but he can be bettet! Thats the hope, and that is the point!
3 for 10 RISP is not any managers fault.
You're fired!
Roberts sent a pinch runner for Theo in the 7th whil he needed Theo's bat at the end of the game.
The JN DH chokes when it matters most.
How many homeruns did Dodgers relief pitchers give up??
DH under the bus. Ego shattered. Well done, Dave.
Are you kidding me the blame should beon Ohtani was it Betts that made the last out at 3rd he was already in scoring position. Bases loaded need one run to tie everyone in the stadium new there was no way he was going to throw him a strike but he swings anyway at pich 2 feet outside and low. He's the best player I've seen in my lifetime but his late inning mistakes cost the Dodgers the game.
