Dodgers postgame: Dave Roberts wants ‘urgency,’ reveals Mookie Betts volunteered to play right field
[Music] table first just with Yoshi. What were you seeing from him today? He said he just kind of felt like it was hard for him to get insane and just stuff wasn’t really there for him. Yeah, you know, I I I thought um he just like he like he had mentioned, I I don’t think that uh he had his best stuff tonight and I don’t think that he had his best command and it seemed like you know from the outset obviously they came out really aggressive swinging the bats early but uh he just couldn’t uh you know and you know when he did get count leverage you know left pitches elevated but again just didn’t have his best stuff tonight with How you all obviously how the game started it seemed like there was opportunities against Raniano but he just seemed to have his stuff tonight but later in the game whether it was the home run from Shane Max my guys hitting on base it felt like there was something kind of started to brew. How frustrating is it though just to kind of fall short especially when you’re coming off of a game like yesterday? Well, you know, yeah, I thought yesterday we we had uh some good things happen, you know, as far as team offense, and tonight we just didn’t have any answers for Sorano. Obviously, it’s a guy that puts the ball on the ground. Um I don’t think we got a guy to second base until uh he was out of the game, so we really didn’t threaten. And um built an inning against uh uh Garcia. Um obviously they they got it at the double play and um so then they you know bring in a lower leverage guy and then it was good to see us you know put an inning together my homer show’s homer and to get Kenley in the game so that’s a positive um but yeah obviously a loss is a loss but um you know we got to uh we got a young pitcher tomorrow in Maderos I just found out so um he’ll probably go shorter and it’ll be essentially a bullpen day and you know we got to put some at bats together and and try to win in the ball game. How deflating have the last 48 hours been, especially with how well you guys played at the start of that Toronto series. You’re trying to find some some traction here. Yeah, that’s that’s the thing is that, you know, we’re all looking for some traction here and and try to stack some wins and, you know, hate to say that yesterday’s loss carried over to to tonight. Um, you got to give credit on the way through the baseball and those guys caught a lead uh and didn’t look back. But yeah, I mean, you know, you win yesterday and you feel even better about coming into today, but now you’re looking at losing two games in a row. So, um, it’s baseball and, you know, we’re good at resetting coming back. Um, but it it was good to see Muki. It was good to see Teao and, uh, Muntz has been, you know, swinging hot bats. So, there are some good things and I thought Will looked better today. So, um, there were some good things, but yeah, obviously, you know, team-wise, it just wasn’t enough. Has it felt like it’s been difficult to sort of get on one of your typical runs, especially the last couple months? It it it it has been. Um, you know, outside of tonight, I think the last 7 to 10 days, we’ve been getting really good starting pitching and then to not build off that with the offense, um, to kind of, like I said, stack wins. Um but tonight, you know, Yoshi just wasn’t sharp and you know, obviously our offense couldn’t overcome the start tonight. Pulling Freddy, was that just because of the score? Yeah, I’m just I’ve been riding him a lot. Um you know, so to think that he’s going to be in there essentially every game, you know, I’ve got to find opportunities to get him off his feet. And you know, with what I saw for seven innings, um it just felt like a good time to get him off his feet and, you know, get ready to go for those next two. And it’s just like a complete mental day off. Well, Teao was going to hit um he was gonna he was going to potentially come in in a big spot if it uh the game was going to be in the balance. So, Teao was uh brewing. Um but then after the double play, then he was down and he would have hit in the ninth inning if he was going to be a tying run. We had recently talked about how just with Dton rushing, you weren’t really comfortable putting him in left field. Was putting Luki out to right just to kind of part of that conversation? Well, you know, that was that was on Loki. Um you know, I I just felt right there getting within three. I felt Rojos had a better chance to get on base um than than uh Dean did and uh so with that you had to give up some defense and Muki volunteered to to kick out to right field which which was which is just being a good teammate. Does it feel like it’s kind of getting to the point of the year where you guys need to get going on like one of your runs again? I mean are you guys kind of feeling that urgency especially with how long this rut has kind of gone on now going back to the start of July? Yeah, I I I do. Um there I there definitely uh has to be some urgency and and obviously I don’t think anyone’s blind to the fact that the standings are the standings and you know so it’s got a lot more interesting. Uh so we got to go out there and play good baseball. But I I I definitely feel that our guys are starting to feel that that urgency and it’s been you know long enough of middling baseball as far as overall team you know wins and losses. Do you almost, you know, need the urgency of the divisional league being down to one game to, I don’t know, almost wake you up and kind of get things going in the right direction? Um, well, uh, whether you like it or not, it is what it is, right? Um, I I would say wake up. I mean, it’s it’s not from from lack of of care or or work. It’s just not getting the job done in whatever fashion, whether it’s, you know, starting pitching, whether it’s situational hitting, whether it’s base running or anything. It’s just baseball. And I think that it’s uh, you know, ultimately, you know, everyone’s trying, everyone wants to, but it’s about, you know, getting it done and we all have to get the job done.
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts discussed losing to the Los Angeles Angels in the opener of the Freeway Series, wanting to see more urgency from the team amid a tight NL West race, and he revealed Mookie Betts volunteered to play right field.

Yo, Dave.
Remember how you punted the game in the 5th inning?
Also, Remember how the team could've used Freddie at the end there with those rallies in the 7th and 8th?
Good Job, buddy. How about some urgency from your management.
The team is in a division race and you are treating it like some walk in the park.
Was tonight a moral victory?
Gotta say it's pretty impressive to completely blow a 9-game division lead in a month. Gotta go down as one of the biggest choke jobs in modern baseball
Since when did hitters 6-9 all turned into Michael Conforto’s
This guys punts games more than little league managers….
I really hope this guy gets replaced if things go bad. Nvm he's Friedman's lapdog.
The team giving up on Doc Roberts?
This team is in free fall.
Roberts just playing with the toys Friedman gave him this deadline. A “heating up” Conforto, and bum Alex Call which the best thing he is known for is walks. Pen is taxed because of injuries and usage stemming to make up for the guys who went down. No real impact relievers acquired to help offset it in a meaningful way. Therefore Dave punts. Nice job Mr Friedman!
Wen we win no comments bout Doc! We lose u can't miss da haters. Doc has 2 WS chips and still doesn't get da respect. Pathetic !!! Doc Roberts is still my guy.
如果人員後面789棒次安排這樣下去…道奇真的會很慘…我不敢看了
Doc is a clown
When people cross their arms, they are feeling insecure or being defensive.
Here, Roberts is defending his incapability for managing the team, and trying to get away from the uncomfortable situation by spitting out bunch of BS as usual.
Who is Doc going to blame today. Conforto BAD PH yesterday. DAVE DOES NOT motivate. Why keep on praising Mook. YESTERD he lost us the game by getting out stealing before HR. Mookie mookie mok is Daves guy. AGAIN NO motivation from manager . He sounds down in dumps … i can see why Sho hasnt given him a car. LOVE SHOHEI TRYING everyday everygame to do something… walk, score runs pitch. I Really like Brew Manager and can see why Murphy won award last yr and likely this yr.
pulling Freeman early. He sure knows how to give up in record time.
Quintenseals… first time ive criticized manager.. but he deserves criticism because he protects mookie who for a fact lost yesterday game by getting out stealing before FReddie HR..would hv been one more run… then 😢bringing in Conforto sunday. Blaming Shohei And Not Motivating majority of players . Brew coach motivates his guys
Roberts has to go always full of excuses he has Muncie back from IL and the Dodgers are still losing, I think the guys have had it with Roberts, he is a terrible coach and was a terrible player
Mr Butterworth at it again. Keep running Comfarto out there day after day. Straight trash.
An incompetent manager who blames the players
l.a. dodgers had same issues of lacking team chemistry, non-stop injuries, lazyness due to over bloated contracts in '24 but pulled it out. not getting away with that this yr and roberts facing reality, needs to do dodger fans a favor and fold b4 certain postseason embarassment
ロバーツ監督とコンフォートはDFAですな。足をひっぱるだけ。
Sick of dave and his excuses
Time to move on from dave
The Dodgers are in major trouble San Diego will take over first place and stay there.
Dave Roberts bunted the game when the team were still fighting. He will not hold himself accountable for anything and is more than willing to throw his players under the bus to save his own skin. After he scapegoated Ohtani yesterday, wondering who will be the next.
Shohei Ohtani 6.4 WAR (including 0.8 pitching WAR)
Will Smith 3.8 WAR
Andy Pages 3.2 WAR
Max Muncy 2.9 WAR
Freddie Freeman 2.4 WAR
Mookie Betts 1.5 WAR
Tommy Edman 1.3 WAR
Teoscar Hernández 0.5 WAR
Michael Conforto -0.4 WAR
Who’s the female reporter, I like her.
Is it me or does Roberts seem still mad at Ohtani? If so, that's ridiculous. The bullpen lost the game yesterday. And without Ohtani, Dodgers are nowhere.
Clueless Dave wants urgency now, urgency was needed before the All Star break. The Dodgers were going through the motions since July. This team has no emotion and that starts with clueless Dave.At this point the Dodgers will not make the post season. Clueless Dave will put a spin on it and will say i like where we are and guys are coming around and well put a couple of wins together and be wright there. Maybe we can send Dave down to OKC to figure it out
If it’s either the FO’s fault for not building a better roster for Dave Roberts to manage or the players’ fault for not performing to their maximum ability, what is Roberts accountability as the highest paid manager (8MM+/year) in the league?
Starting pitchers strive for seven innings if possible. 5 innings or pitch count is hurting pitchers.
Move Ohtani to the 3 spot between Freddy and Smith. Too many RBI’s left on the table with Ohtani following the 7,8, and 9 spots.
Hey Doc,, time to send your resume to some Little League teams
Rumar comment guy… does manager sound motivating?to players Is this the Tone he talks to players to get then going. Im was a counselor and He sounds depressed. This is first time i criticized dave. Listen to brewers coach.. he is a motivater.. thats what i
THE REAL LOS ANGELES TEAM CONTINUE TO SPANK THE ORIGINAL TEAM FROM BROOKLYN
Oh, didn’t you hear….There’s a new reality show. It’s called Who Is Doc Going To Blame Today ?
The buck stops with you Dave.
No one is ever going to confuse you for Joe Torre as a manager when it comes to baseball IQ but that’s okay.
But, your throwing players under the bus to the press and not taking any responsibility for your own bad decision making in these games …. disgraceful
Dave should watch videos of Tommy how to motivate the players, maybe he’ll learn something
We’ll see! Still have 44 games left! Win each series at home and don’t get swept on road! If they end up as wild card the Dodgers
won’t have a week off to lose their timing! Urgency without panic!
What makes yoshi a great pitcher is that when he has command, he has lots of pitches to overwhelm the batters. Unfortunately, when he doesn’t have his command, he is helpless out there. He’s not a pitcher that can fall back to their 100mph fastballs and just bully the opposing team.
I don’t think Yama will be the number 1 pitcher come playoff. It’s either going to be Ohtani or Snell. I can imagine that in the playoffs, if Yamamoto gives up two runs in 1st inning, they’ll take him out because they know which version they’re getting that day. He is either really good or really bad. No in between.
I have said this for years. Even after last year. We win in spite of Roberts. And it's finally catching up to him and it's costing us. Yeah it took years. But it's finally showing. He is an average manager that has an absolutely loaded team.
And here I thought cutting AB and Ct3 was to boost the offense in a way. Yet they're still here struggling.
Dodgers seem to me to be poorly managed. Im not sure whether thats Dave Roberts or the whole staff in general…
