Texans Trade John Metchie for Harrison Bryant | Smart Roster Move?

So, the Mete trade, you like it. Well, we’ll find out whether or not Harrison Bryant can play, right? Yeah. Well, what’s up with Harrison Bryant? I listen, I kind of like Irv Smith, but we’ll see. Uh, he is guy’s got got some experience. Smith’s been But Irv was with the team last year. Yeah, been with the team. He doesn’t really do a whole lot. Well, he Well, when he’s in there, it seems like he’s catching passes. Uh, he had a nice day the other day. you know, was nice. He he they were they were looking for him and Irv did a nice job and he’s been in the league now for a little while and he’s been okay. I don’t know. What do you know about Harrison Bryant? Uh Harrison Bryant came out of Florida Atlantic. I loved him coming out. Absolutely loved him. He is he’s got short arms, but he’s got a really He had this great game against Ohio State that I couldn’t stop, you know, that it was I hung my hat on it pretty good. I think he’s been he was okay in Cleveland. I think a lot of that was because Cleveland wasn’t very good. He is not the biggest guy. He’s more of a, you know, he’ll get after it as a blocker, but he’s really going to be more of a kind of a move tight end type for you, which, you know, Brevin Jordan handled some of that as well. But he’s a guy with pro experience. I like this a lot. I think he’s a solid player who does his job. And to me, this is the kind of player that Mechie wasn’t going to make the team potentially. I mean, you have enough wide receivers that Mechie was probably not going to be a factor on this team. So now you’re able to move off of an area where it’s a surplus and go get a a former NFL starter, a guy with NFL experience, um, to stepped into a position where you lost a guy with NFL experience. So I like it a lot. I And I like Harrison Bryant. I think Harrison Bryant really maybe should have done more in Cleveland, but it was not a a great situation over there. Yeah. So Mechie’s got, you know, he’s in a nice spot. Mechi probably I don’t know. He was on the bubble. How much was he going to with Jaylen Noel? How much is he going to play and he was expendable? You picked up a fifth round pick that you had lost before. So that’s nice. Um you got four you got uh four picks in the first three rounds next year and then you grabbed your fifth rounder that you had traded away already. So um you know next next year’s draft is looking pretty good. Neither here nor there though. I don’t know that John Metchi was going to be part of this. Um it was it was getting awfully difficult. I think that they were they were showcasing John Mete this preseason the first couple of games. Yeah, I think this may have been a this may have been a plan. Yeah, because you have Hutchinson, you have the two Iowa the two uh Iowa State kids. You got Nico Collins. What do you mean three? Hutchinson, too. Well, that’s right. I forget Hutchinson was. Yeah, I meant the two rookies, but yeah, you got the two rookies, you got Nico Collins, you got Christian Kirk. You’re now already at four. Hutchinson’s had a good camp. Um Well, he’s been okay. They like him. Yeah. Yeah, they like him. They say he’s really taken a step forward. So, that will be five. So, now you’re already at five. Yeah. So, even if you go with the sixth, like Meti would have been sixth, eh, I’d rather get I’d rather get a third tight end uh than a sixth, a wide receiver. And your hatred for Braxton Barios is uh is palpable. So, Braxton’s fine. I mean, he’s another And then you got Justin Watson, too. So, you’re Yeah, Justin’s got NFL experience. He’s a special teams player. Braxton Barios is got special he can return. You can either basically you just mentioned it, John. That’s actually what it is. Watson and Berios can play special teams. Menchi’s not a special teams guy. If you’re going to be a six wide receiver, you you need to have that extra something. Absolutely. Absolutely. And so, you know, um you know, with John Matchi has been a really good story. I mean, you hate to do that. I’m glad they did it the way they did. You know, after after battling the leukemia, he came back and, you know, they actually kept a spot for him all of this time and he really hasn’t contributed. And, you know, that’s that is just you just can’t have that. But, they did that for the kid. They did that. It was nice. And, uh, I think, you know, he gave him a shot. He just isn’t he’s not going to be on this thing. Maybe he’ll be something for Philadelphia. He might. You know, you give him a shot. you give him a chance to go elsewhere and play and we’ll see whether or not he can. I don’t know that he ever was going to be anything here, but I love the way that they went about it the last couple of years with John Mchi after after what he went through his rookie season. Yeah. No, it was it was, you know, that the organization was good to him. He came back, he worked, he got back like he did what he had to do. Good opportunity for him maybe to I mean, it’s not like they don’t have some wide receivers over there, but maybe it’s a better situation. I just saw ESPN was listing their wide receivers and it looks like, you know, if we’re talking fourth, fifth wide receiver, he’s got a better chance over there than he does in Houston. Yeah, I mean, they’re topheavy um with their wide receivers, but they could they could use that depth, which is nice. Good on them. Good. Good. And I hope John Mchi makes it because But, you know, the guys love him. The guys love Everybody was rooting for him. Everybody wanted to see everybody on that team wanted to see him uh succeed and including CJ. I imagine it was uh it was difficult for CJ because he’s been a big matchy guy ever since ever since he got here. Yeah. But you know Harrison Bryan is not he’s never had more than in Cleveland he never had more. His his first three years in Cleveland 238 yards 233 yards 239 yards. Kind of the same guy every year. Three touchdowns, three touchdowns, one touchdown. Last year three touchdowns on only 20 catches. Um he’s played in every game. He he only missed one. I guess there was one game he missed as a rookie. Well, I take it back. Last year with the Raiders, 12 catches for 96. So, I don’t think he’s going to, you know, he’s not going to light the world on fire. Obviously, he’s been in the league for five year five years now. But, uh and he only had a one-year deal with the Raiders before he went to the uh Eagles and then of course now with the Texans. But um what he is is a player with with some pro experience and that’s what you need because because Brevin Jordan is is out and so you need another guy in here that can compete for some playing time. He does he does something that Stover doesn’t really do and it he’s kind of he’s kind of does what Daltton Schulz does. So he’s kind of a backup to Daltton Schulz. Yeah. Well, he’s going to be a backup to Stover and Schultz. Yeah. I mean, Stove will get after it as a blocker better than Schultz is what I mean. Oh, yeah. And Harrison Bryant, uh, he’ll give effort as a blocker. He’s only 243 pounds, so he’s a little smaller. Um, yeah. I mean, we’ll see. We’ll see if this is not Look, it’s I I like this trade. It’s from a roster standpoint and filling out your roster with your depth chart. I like it. Is he going to set the world on fire? No. Matchi wasn’t going to either. So, it’s just basically you just tightened up your roster on an area of surplus and an area of need. You just flopped it out. Nick did a good job there. Yeah, that’s how I see it. That’s all. I mean, again, you did you did right by the kid, you know? I don’t know. It would have been Let’s not go bleeping each other’s bleeps. This is just a basic trade of an extra wide receiver for an extra tight end, right? They’re good. I wonder if you if you did right. Would he rather go be DFA and find a team that’s best for him or Well, I don’t really care. I mean, well, at least trying to get a tight end. Oh, no. I know. But at least you know if you’re him that they want you, right? Yeah. They they traded away a guy. I mean, maybe some excess baggage for them, uh, for you, but still, whenever you’re traded, you know that that team wanted

The Houston Texans have traded wide receiver John Metchie III to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for tight end Harrison Bryant. On today’s show, we break down why this move makes sense for both sides, what Bryant brings to Houston’s TE room, and why Metchie was the odd man out in a crowded WR group.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Texans are also receiving a 2026 fifth-round pick in the deal, while sending a 2026 sixth-round pick to Philadelphia as part of the trade.

We also talk about:
🔹 Bryant’s NFL experience and potential fit behind Dalton Schultz
🔹 Why Metchie never quite carved out a role in Houston
🔹 How this trade impacts the Texans’ depth chart going forward

  1. Not the biggest guy? Dude is 6'5" 245lbs. He fits the height and size of the average TE in the NFL. Behind Schultz you have Brewer, Smith, and Bryant. I think under Caley's offense, they will be just fine.

  2. I think the texans had enough at wide out to trade metchie. The interesting thing about getting Bryant, I wonder if this is more of indictment on Schultz more than anything.

  3. Had Metchie not got cancer I’m sure he would have flourished sooner. Coming back from cancer has to be harder than any other injury a football player would typically get. Wish him the best in Philly.

  4. Smith poor blocker, Schultz sux period and Stover could be good but we don’t know. So Bryant may be a sleeper. Gotta let go of the just ok players just because you met them and they are nice guys. Smith ain’t winner us a SB.
