What The Carey Price Trade ACTUALLY Means…
In the next few days, we’re going to be seeing a pretty massive NHL trade, but maybe not the one that you would have suspected. No, the fabled Macy McTavish or Marco Rossy trade isn’t going to happen, but we’re going to see Carrie Price for the Montreal Canadians going to a different team. And no, this isn’t some trade for a team trying to get a goalender. Carrie Price will be used as a cap dump by Montreal. But the implications of this deal, I think, are way more fascinating than the actual trade itself. So, what does this carry price trade actually mean at the end of the day? And what will this allow Montreal to do in the future? Well, make sure you guys watch till the end as we go through this entire trade and all the details of it. And make sure you hit that subscribe button if you’re new for more coverage on this deal and more trades in the future all throughout the next year because hopefully we’ll see a few more moves that we did this off season. Now, it would be very hilarious and on brand for the NHL that we’re waiting all this time for the next major NHL move, and it’s pretty much just a cap dump involving Carrie Price’s contract, but I’m honestly not that surprised. Still though, this is a necessary move for the Montreal Canadians to make with Carrie Price making $10.5 million. There’s a lot of cap shenanigans as to why the Havs can’t just have him as an LTR piece this next season and why they need to move him now. Regardless of that though, it is going to be very very strange to see Carrie Price mood. It’s going to be one of those Paval Datsuk type of Arizona Coyotes deals where it just feels wrong. And in Carrie Price’s case, he’s not likely to play a game at all after he gets traded. That’s not going to happen. But still, to have him on another team’s roster is going to be strange considering how much time and how much of a vital piece he’s been to this Montreal Canadians team, even if he hasn’t played a game in four years. One of the first people to cover it in Marco Demo talked about this situation in a latest article and went through some of the details on it saying, “I’ve heard the Canadians would move price to line up another trade. It’s simply a question of when.” With the signing bonus paid, sources expect the Habs to move Carrie Price’s contract, freeing cap space for potential inseason trades. And when it comes to the signing bonus on the deal, we get confirmation here from Puck Pedia saying that Carrie Price receives a $5.5 million signing bonus tomorrow. During the season, he has a $2 million salary with a cap it, of course, at 10.5 million. But that was a pretty big reason why we hadn’t seen that contract moved yet was because that’s a big signing bonus for a lot of teams to handle, especially as we get into the front rush for carry price. It makes sense why these teams, especially teams like San Jose for instance, wouldn’t want to take that on for really no reason. And Marco gives us some destinations to potentially look out for, saying that Carrie Pra’s contract should be traded this upcoming week with sources suggesting San Jose, Chicago or Pittsburgh as destinations. The Canadians are trading prices contract to open themselves to the possibility of another trade. And then even more details on the front runners saying that for the record, the most amount of smoke has been around San Jose and that we’ll see where it goes in the next few days. And we had this interesting exchange as well about the details of this with Yol saying that they could start the season with price on LT and be fine. But Marcos says they cannot use inseason LT right now. There’s $6 million over the cap. They need to use the offseason training camp formula which means zero roster flexibility. So that’s the thing. If the Habs kept Carrie Price, it really wouldn’t allow them much to go after anybody at the deadline, anybody in general or even change that much within the roster entirely. I mean, they would be pretty much stuck and locked in with what they have, which for Montreal can be fine, but I think there’s room still to grow with that roster. And let’s be honest, I still think unless Kirby Duck somehow explodes, that second line C spot will be an issue for the next couple years. And unless Michael Hayes is able to pop too, it could be an issue after that. So for Montreal, if something opens up and they have the opportunity to strike, they should. And hopefully this trade will give them a better opportunity to do that. And as Jean Francois says in a pretty candid tweet here, a trade will happen to Montreal no matter what. They are in the worst spot possible capwise. They’re unable to be below the cap before placing price in LTI, and they are not close to 106 million at all. The easiest and best move for Montreal is to dump price, of course. And it’s true. You look at the teams in the caps based out there and the Habs have the second least projected space in the league with minus $5.93 million. So something needs to budge. Something needs to change in the cap situation for Montreal to really even be compliant whether that is putting Kerry Press in LTI. But of course a trade being the most likely option even if it means for Montreal giving a little bit to make the deal happen. Now, I’ve seen some people out there just kind of expecting for teams to take on the contract because they need to get to the cap floor, obviously. But this next season, the cap floor is going to be 70 million, a little bit over that, but I think 70.5 million is the figure. And you see in terms of the projected space and the projected cap pit for all teams out there, every single team is above the cap floor right now. So, no team is necessarily in desperate need or anything to take on the carry price contract. No team needs it to actually get to the cap floor like some people might say. And that might make it for Montreal a little bit more difficult than it otherwise would have been to trade him. I don’t think it would take a first round pick or anything, but I think we’re looking at maybe a little even more than like a seventh rounder, maybe even like a fifth rounder or something to take on the contract just because for teams they’re not really desperate right now for that. For a team like San Jose, obviously it could be in their best interest to take on a contract like this with the space they have. But even then, if they were to take it on, they’d have about $9 million to work with, which sure is a lot to handle. But if San Jose unexpectedly is at the trade deadline in a really great spot and they want to start buying, that might limit their options just a little bit. So I I think for teams out there, there’s really nobody that’s a slam dunk to trade for him. No team that again is going to step up to the plate and just want to take him for free. Unfortunately for Montreal, it will have to cost a little bit. But I think in the end because of that, it makes the roster a lot more fluid and it’s just kind of a deal you have to make. The good thing about this though is that Curry Price’s contract is only for this next season. So after 2026, the contract is over, which is of course a lot more appealing for NHL teams. If they’re going to take a contract like this on for a pick, it’s much better to have it as only one year left, especially for a team like San Jose that’s going to want to start doing a lot better, especially in 2027. I do think it’ll end up being San Jose that ends up taking on the Carrie Price contract, just because especially Mike Greer’s early tenure in San Jose, they seem to be pretty savvy in terms of bringing on contracts and deals that other teams might not want to keep on the books. And it seems like San Jose has always been very active in that mindset. So bringing on a part like Carrie Price for a fifth round pick or something I think makes a lot of sense for them still. But when it comes to what this trade actually means for Montreal, I I think it means that we’re officially entering a new era. I mean we already have gotten the implications of that with last year’s playoff run and everything. But trading Kerry Price, having him off the books and having a situation where Montreal’s so tight to the cap, they need to trade him is kind of an interesting spot considering where they were just a few years ago trying to rebuild, trying to retool this roster. Now they have all the pieces in place. They’re expensive. They cost a lot, but at the end of the day, it’s a really good core and for Montreal, something that they’ll want to keep going forward, which is why a carry price trade is happening in the first place. And even though it’ll be strange and maybe even a little bit sad to see Carrie Price not on the Montreal Canadians roster anymore, at the end of the day, it was just $10.5 million in cap space, he wasn’t playing another game in Montreal, no matter the situation, and he’s not going to be playing a game for anybody else either. So, it’s not going to be a weird situation where he plays a couple games for San Jose to end off his career. That’s just not going to happen. And at the end of the day, it’s just kind of a casualty for the cap space. Unfortunately, the Arizona Coyotes aren’t around anymore to take on Carrie Price’s contract like they would have in the past, which that’s maybe the most sad thing to me. Now, getting into the article that we actually mentioned at the start of the video from Marco, it goes into a lot of interesting details around the trade market after the Halves make that carry price deal. Montreal was in the market for a centerman, but because they hadn’t traded carry price yet, the cab situation was a bit of a problem. Not a bit of a problem, it was the problem. And until that signing bonus was paid, there really wasn’t going to be any trade to feasibly happen yet. But with the car price trade happening, it seems a lot more likely that Montreal is actually going to be able to pull off a center trade. And it goes into some of the details here from TV Sports. Jean Carlo Deja Loa going into also what Montreal could be doing timelinewise, saying, “I haven’t heard anything is imminent with a top six center with training camp set to start in a few weeks, but I have heard they’re monitoring a few situations in case teams have a change at heart between now and the December roster freeze,” said a well-placed NHL source. And that makes a lot of sense considering for Montreal, we’ve also seen some trades midway throughout the season, not just at the trade deadline, but I think there could be a lot of shakeup around November, around December, even January, well before the trade deadline because of how disappointing some teams might end up being. It is such a competitive race in the NHL now. There’s so few teams actually wanting to be rebuilders, actually wanting to tank, and that could spur a few trades for disgruntled teams, and maybe Montreal could sweep up and take advantage of it. And Marco goes on to say, “The trade market has been bone dry for months now.” Yeah, preach to the choir. Which has made GMs halt their push for additions, hoping some of their peers will come around to accepting futures and prospects in exchange for their coveted roster players. And as Marco goes on to say, it’s worth noting prior to Logea’s tweet that Max Truman also highlighted the Canadians were looking for an immediate but long-term fix down the middle. The issue in trying to make a move right now is that the list of teams in the same situation as the Canadians is long, although some teams are in more desperate situations. Prices will be extremely high as the list of sellers is incredibly small in relation to the number of buyers. And as they go on to say, right now there are about five teams that would jump at the first bonafide top six center available, especially the Vancouver Conucks, which makes sense, said a source out of the Western Conference. The Canadians are putting a lot of hope in Doc to see how he starts the season and if he starts the season and should it not work, they’ll reassess it as they did last December. And that makes a ton of sense. I think a lot of the start of the season is riding on Kirby Doc and what he’s able to do because I think at this point, especially considering the center options out there, there’s very few that are even better than a Kirby Doc. Even if he has the injury issues and the lack of consistency, at the end of the day, he’s one of the better options. And even a team like Vancouver might be a team that would jump on him if available. That’s how thin the center market is right now. And that’s why I agree that it’s been actually good for Montreal to wait and see. Put some patience here. And if the start of the season doesn’t go the way you want, still you have a very young core and a core that is building together. And I don’t think it’s the end of the world if that were to happen. I’d much rather Montreal struggle a bit at the start of the season, maybe do a bit better in the second half, then just bet on somebody that isn’t a fit for them, pay a ton of assets, a ton of money, and have it not work out long term. That’s the last thing you want with this team. The reason why the No Doson trade, for example, was such a great fit is because he came along and was pretty much perfect for what Montreal needed. Plus, the cap hit wasn’t too crazy as well for a long-term contract, and it all worked out. That’s why Montreal made the move and they made a lot of moves they made over the last couple of seasons because they’ve had players come around that fit exactly what they needed and there just wasn’t that many guys that even fit that description center-wise this off seasonason. You could have said players like Mason McTavish, but I doubt he was really available for a price that Montreal would have even been able to stomach. I think it would have been a gargantuan trade package going back to Anaheim. And I just don’t think for Montreal they were in a position to really give that up. So, I I think in a lot of ways it’s kind of going to be a wait and see first couple months of the NHL season for Montreal. I don’t know how well they’re going to do. They’re a team that I’m still kind of debating whether they’re actually a playoff team next year or not because there’s so many different factors that could come into play here, but if they were to trade for a second line center, if they were to really go and be aggressive, I wouldn’t mind that whatsoever. We just don’t know who’s even available right now or who will be available in December. All I know is that I am going to need Kirby Doc to actually start playing. Well, man, I have been dying on this hill for so long and I’m just at this point just just give me what I need at this point. I I’m not even going to put too much confidence. I’m not going to put too much faith. I’m going to keep my expectations low and if he is able to get past that, I will be pleasantly surprised. It’s a shame, man, because again, those two games at the start of 2024 were so good. I swear to God, I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. He was so good in those two games. got injured a lot of 2025 I felt like was kind of recovering from the injury and it showed only 22 points in 57 games but man I know he’s not going to be fully healthy to start out training camps and everything but dear god we just need something here man I don’t care if you’re not 100% if you’re just like 90% or something just start putting up points man start looking actually a little bit faster looking a little bit more flashy because jeez the Habs need Kirby Doc to not just break out but to establish himself and at least a middle six role. It felt like that was kind of all over the place last season. But here’s hoping that there will be a little bit of change because I think in a lot of ways Kirby Doc could be emblematic of how this next season goes for the Haps. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him though because if I do, one of his bones might break and we obviously don’t want to see that happen again. But I do think ultimately Doc will be fine. I don’t think he’ll be as bad as he was last year, but I don’t think he’s going to make a huge impression as the second line center for Montreal, which makes it even stranger long term for what the Habs need to do because I think in that place, you’re kind of debating is Doc going to be able to get better. He’s just 25 years old. Maybe he’ll get a little bit better over the next couple of seasons. And it’ll put Montreal in a tough place, especially when they try to evaluate who is going to be a definitive improvement in that second line center role. But we’ll just have to wait and see. Again, I’m hoping Kirby Doc proves me wrong, I guess, and it actually is able to truly break out because again, dear Lord, this Habs team needs it. But that is my video today on the carry price negotiations, the trade rumors, and what it could mean for the Habs afterwards when it’s all said and done. Thank you guys so much for tuning in. Y'all even if he doesn't play a game it is going to be SO WEIRD seeing him on a different team… What are YOUR thoughts on the latest Carey Price rumors? And what moves do YOU think MTL should make after it's complete? #GravGang
I genuinely think the Habs should've got Rossi this offseason and avoided Dobson I still don't think Dobson is what they needed with Hutson and Matheson fine for their PP units Dobson is almost redundant but Rossi over Dach is a huge improvement as well as costing a fraction likely 1 of Montreals 1sts would've got Rossi and a 2nd or 3rd round pick
Huge Montreal fan here. Who cares? Take your $5.5 million “bonus” money and your Coke and good riddance.
That's a pretty big contract to take on and the Canadians dont have much leverage. Whatever team takes it on, should ask for a high pick and a decent prospect.
Pittsburg is gonna trade for Carey Price contract……..there's only $ 800 000 dollars remaining to be paid to Carey Price after september 1
Allowing pittsburgh to drop below the salary floor buy 10.5 million dollars
That will give pittsburgh room to trade
Evgeni Malkin
Sidney Crosby
Bryan Rust
Erik Karlsson
without going under the floor
This is simple economics……I don't understand why nobody else sees this….
The center market is so thin right now that Jesperi Kotkaniemi's contract isn't nearly as bad as people think that it is. He's only slightly overpaid, but teams are so desperate for a 3C right now that he'd probably still get 4M AAV if he was a free agent this offseason.
I'm not a believer in Kirby Dach, but Montreal is stuck with him because there aren't other options for them at 2C or 3C. Carolina's in the same situation with Kotkaniemi.
San Jose is near the contract limit which could be a problem for them, so sending a 2-3 contracts back to Montreal (who have plenty of contracts space to accommodate) would be the only stipulation to make this make sense for them IMHO
Me as a habs fan I don't want carey price to get traded I want him to retire as a montreal canadien after his contract I will be upset and crying if he's traded 😢
Two things not really mentioned as to why SJ is motivated to do this: They're near the contract limit (49 out of 50) and don't currently have room for both Sam Dickinson and Michael Misa contracts without getting rid of other contracts – so there would probably be a couple AHL-level players going back to MTL. Also, the Sharks have a number of contracts expiring at the end of the season, so if they want to dump multiple players at the trade deadline, there's a possibility they'd be at risk at dipping below the floor – having Price's contract would ensure they don't need to worry about that.
So much money for a guy who doesn't even play.
Future sharks legend Carey Price! But fr tho if he wants to go to the scouting/coaching/exec route he would be in pretty good company with Ryan Miller and Evgeni Nabokov in the org
Like the channel, the content you deliver on a regular basis. I have one very minor critique. I know I'm going to be in the minority on this one, but I have light colored eyes and as a result I'm very light sensitive. When you put a white screen up in the video, it just absolutely blasts me. It hurts. What I do, is start the video and open another tab. I end up listening to it, but not really watching it. Like this video, had A LOT of white in it. I know, because I would click back to the open tab every once in a while, to see if you changed the white background.
I don't want to complain, cause I love the content. It's just I wish I could actually "watch" it. 🙂
When you go full screen with your cam, everything is fine. It's the white web pages that are rough. And I know the hockey stats are important so I'm not saying you should stop presenting those. We need to see the season stats and the website just uses white unfortunately as a background. But this video, had some quotes that were just on a white background for a while. And because I view these YT videos on a large monitor, it turns it in to a situation similar to being hit with high beams when you're driving.
Anyways, sorry to bring it up. Everything else is great about the channel, just wishing I could view the videos more. 🙂
MTL fan here, and I know Carey said ''what ever is best for the team'' but I don't want him going away. Please do not let him, he's a HABS for ever.
As a former Coyotes fan, taking on a cap dump has one mitigating factor. Management is telling you not to expect much anytime soon. So relax and enjoy the suck.
Montreal considering the season dubson just had should not have gave him that contract… Plus now they might have salary cap issues dobson better be good for them!
Kirby dach was never good FFS 😂
Great Video, as usual, Nathan
Because of scarcity in teams Willing to accept prices contract, it will take minimum 2nd round pick
im just saying that if the Habs trade Price's contract, they could trade Dach and Struble or Mike Matheson and they could fit 8.7M in cap. And they need a center. And there happens to be a really good center on a really bad team who makes 8.7M dollars. Just saying. Throwing it out there.
It’s gonna cost a high pick like 2nd or 1st no team is gonna give favour to Montreal they took a 1st for monahan from the flames they set the bar
So help me understand. I haven't had the time to watch hockey much since the salary cap was introduced, and I've started following hockey more closely again in the last few years (now that I'm retired). Why would a team take over the Price contract? What do they get out of it? Reaching the cap floor is one thing, but if they're all above the cap floor already, what's in it for them? What am I missing? (Or are you saying that they would do this for a 5th round pick?)
I feel like either way price will sign a 1 day contract with the habs to retire as a hab
Can someone explain why his contract can't be ltir
What if every team refused to trade? It would not happen but legitimately what would happen?
Habs making room for Sid Crosby
Too bad he might not be able to play again
