Breaking down Alex Bump, Jett Luchanko and Day 1 of Flyers Rookie Camp | PHLY Flyers Podcast

Hey everybody, how you doing? Well, that’s good. Welcome to PHLY Flyers presented by your local Ford store and Bet 365. My name is Bill Matz. I’m your director of fun and games for the afternoon. Joining me in the Xfinity studio, it is Philly’s number one hockey beat writer, Charlie O’ Conor. What’s going on today, Chuck? It’s been a busy day. Was over in Vorhees. Got here in time for the show. Published an article. We’ll have a uh a post-practice notes, the first postpractice notes of the 2025 2026 season out later tonight. So, it’s been a busy day, but I’m ready to talk. Philadelphia Flyers day one rookie camp. I love it. Now, yesterday you said it was like back to school shopping, like preparing. Was today basically for all the jouos and analysts? Was this the first day of school? Yes, to a degree. Like that half day. It’s like syllabus day. Yeah, I feel like this was half day. The real first day is the first day of main camp because that starts at like 8:00 a.m. That’s when it feels like it’s really day one because that is a you get there at 8:00 a.m. You’re there until 4:00. It’s a long day. Today was more or less just a practice. They were on the ice at 11:00 and they got done around 12:30 and then we interviewed for three players and John Snowden and then it was just okay now I got to publish my content. But next Thursday or Wednesday, whenever the first on ice day of main camp is, that’s really going to feel like the first day of school. This was the the 11:30 dismissal day. Well, we got our first bit of news on this basically first day of school for the uh for the Flyers assembled media and the organization. Uh and that is our Shady Rays future is bright segment today. Um it’s not not super bright. Well, I’m choosing to look at it as if Jet Luchenko, although not participating in drills, he’s probably fine. I feel like I’m more concerned than you are. I am choosing. And I know this isn’t my typical, you know, I It’s very out of character because it’s day one. I’m not going to I’m not going to doubt them on day one. We’re gonna we are going to give them the benefit of the doubt and Jet Luchenko is all fine, but we did get the uh the news today that Jet Luchenko per Danny Brier uh Jet Luchenko’s absence from Oni’s work today is precautionary. They’re giving him a few extra days uh days off to be fully ready for main camp. So, we’ll take the wait and see approach regarding his availability. It doesn’t seem as if he’s going to be in the rookie games on Friday and Saturday. Uh Kevin Kurs just tweeted he’s definitely out for all of rookie camp and it’s all about getting him to main camp healthy. I’m choosing to say well we just don’t think he needs rookie camp and uh that’s that’s their that’s their idea. We need to see him against NHL competition or borderline NHL competition going out there against the Devin Kaplins of the world. I I don’t know man. I I’m remaining positive. The future is bright. When main camp opens next week, everything will be okay and we’ll be in route to Jet Lucenko making the team. And it very well could be. It very well could be the case that on Wednesday or Thursday, whenever main camp starts, Jet Luchenko is out there and he has a strong camp and he makes the team and everybody’s happy. I’m just saying that because your idea of well maybe they just didn’t want him to have to go through rookie camp. Well, then they could have just not had him go through rookie camp. They they didn’t have to have him on the attendee sheet. They didn’t have to have him show up early for rookie camp. He could be out there practicing with the veterans who were doing scrimmages. And when I say veterans, I’m not just talking about Owen Tippets and Shan Couturier. Like guys like Oscar Ecklan and Rodrigo Obles and Zade Wisdom. They’re out there with the vets because they’re not at rookie camp. They’re not on the rookie camp roster. The fact that he’s on the rookie camp roster and now is not out there on the ice tells me that when they went through their physicals, something that was at least a little bit concerning popped up that they want to take care of or they want to give him a little bit of extra time. Now, maybe it is truly precautionary and he will be fine for late next week and everything will be great, but the fact that he missed development camp also with a groin issue and now it’s two months later and he’s still feeling the effects of hey, maybe it’s a different injury, but my guess is it’s probably the same one. I’m just a little worried that that might not be 100% by next week if it wasn’t 100% in July or today. It’s a concern. I’m not I’m not, you know, sounding the alarm. It’s not an emergency. No, but it is to me it is more concerning than oh well, they said it was precautionary, so it’s precautionary. I’m very much taking a I’ll believe it when I see it when he’s out there for day one of main camp. We have previously been burned so many times when it’s like, “Ah, he’s all right. It’s just dayto day.” Yeah, he’s totally He’s totally dayto-day. We swear. Oh, no. You never never going to see him again. Never see him again. Don’t know where he is. I’m I am choosing to put on my orange tinted shady rays and say everything’s cool, but man, when I hear I don’t want to say it. When I hear a groin injury is lasting this long, it’s like Yeah, it’s a core muscle injury. I’m not saying it though. Um you you just said it. I know. I can’t help myself, Charlie. But no, I do believe the future is bright. Jet Luchenko, he’ll be fine. Megan making the team, but we should not expect him to play Friday or Saturday in the rookie games. And speaking of those rookie games, we’ve got tickets to give away. And I’m going to do this a little differently than usual because, as you know, it is Big Brothers Big Sisters month here all across the All City Network. And we are striving to raise 50 grand for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Uh if you don’t have uh maybe it’s not the money you want to donate, it’s your time. Well, go to bbbs.org, sign up, look at what it takes to be a big brother or big sister. Check that out. But I am soliciting some donations today. And here’s how we’re going to do it. If you want tickets to Friday’s rookie game in Allentown, we have two pairs to give away. I need you right below the chat box to donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Five dollar donation. Five bucks. Take a screenshot of whatever sort of receipt you get at the end of this and DM it to PHLY_flyers or the PHLY Flyers Blue Sky. That simple. The first ones to hit my DMs on Blue Sky or Twitter by timestamp, you’re going to get the tickets. That easy. If you can’t make it Friday, we’re going to be doing the same thing tomorrow. So, prepare for that. But I won’t be accepting any that happen like before the show tomorrow. So, you can’t trick me. Uh, but first ones, it’s going to be first come, first serve. Show me the $ five dollar donation and boom, you get the tickets to Friday’s game. PHLY_flyers on Twitter or PHLY Flyers Blue Sky. All right, that is that. Charlie, it was the first day of rookie camp. It was. I asked you already if it was like the first day of school. So, now just one thing I just didn’t see. Who’s running rookie camp? What coaches are out there? It is John Snowden. Okay, that’s who is the new Lehigh Valley Phantom’s head coach. They announced that earlier this summer. It’s usually I can’t really remember the way it was in like the Hexaw regime, but for the last half decade plus, it’s been the Phantom’s coach who runs rookie camp. Ian Leier ran rookie camp for years. Obviously, Le Perier uh no longer the Phantom coach now apparently no longer with the Flyers organization. He’s with a he got picked up as I think a pro scout or some type of scout. Pro scout, I believe. Yeah. So, it is usually the Phantom’s head coach, and it is the Phantom’s head coach this time. John Snowden is the new Phantom’s head coach. He’s running rookie camp. He will be the headman behind the bench for Friday and Saturday’s rookie games against the New York Rangers. Um, but then there’s just other coaches out there. Few development coaches. I saw Sam Moran out there. Uh, Terrence Wallen, the new assistant uh for uh for Snowden is out there. Uh Nick Schultz, who’s also an assistant, he’s out there as well. And there’s a couple others. We’re not talking about the the NHL guys. They’re not there yet. I did not see Tocket on the ice. Didn’t see any of the assistants on the ice or at least I didn’t take notice. I don’t really know what a lot of them look like at this point. Yeah, you probably haven’t met these guys. Yeah, I mean, I’ve seen their pictures, but I don’t really know what they look like. Oh, I have a 0% chance of committing that to memory. I’ll get I’ll get the hang of it once the season starts. Once definitely once the season starts. Probably once camp starts, I’ll start to pick up. But, uh, but yeah, Moran was out there. He’s kind of hard to miss. He’s like seven foot. Uh and then uh then Terrence Wallen and Nick Schultz and obviously John Snowden was running the practice. And I think uh I think we’re going to enjoy John Snowden at least in in our capacity as as journalists and content creators because he’s a good talker. Oh, that’s great. Good quote. Good interview. That’s awesome to hear. And what else is awesome to hear? Well, Saturday we’re going to be at the rookie game. Uh so we’re going to get a chance. We’re doing a show live on Saturday. So take note. That’s why there wasn’t a show Monday because our fifth show this week is going to be Saturday at 2 PM. Yep. We’re going to be at the PPL Center. We’re doing a live show. We’re hoping to get some really great guests. So, make sure you take note of that. Tune in. Yeah. We’ll be we’ll be able to recap Friday’s game because I’m going to be there. I’m going to be covering that obviously up in Allentown. And then we’ll be able to preview Saturday’s game and get direct feedback from people in the organization about what they saw Friday night. Well, there you go. It’s that it’s going to be a great show. I’m really looking forward to it. All right, Charlie. Uh, we are finally, we are now almost totally caught up on the articles you wrote while you weren’t here. The ones you published while you weren’t here. Uh, I was we have your rookie camp articles now, and I really liked what you did uh for a number of reasons. We’ll get to them as we get deeper into the percent chance each guy has to make the team, but you gave a numerical value to the chance of each player at rookie camp. People love numbers. Their chances of making the actual NHL team. And I really like this exercise because it’s just kind of all right, this is the expectation going in. This is what we uh this is what we can expect from these guys. And I’m going to get into uh as many as we can today. We have actually a decent amount of time left. These are the ones who didn’t have zero. I wrote down all the ones who didn’t have 0% chance. Now, some of them low, but not absolute zero. Not absolute zero. So, let’s start with the player with the best chance of making this team. It is, of course, Alex Bump. We kind of have, at least I have in my mind, penciled him in. Now, we’ve said it’s not going to be given to him. If he doesn’t have a very good camp, he could easily start the year in the A. I have him below 50%. You have him below 50%. But just based on what we’ve seen to this point, you’ve said, you know, he was definitely too good for development camp. They really liked what they saw out of him last year. They love the idea of him taking that try out with the Phantoms rather than just play two NHL games. He seems to have checked every box today. Day one, I realize they’re doing drills. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to evaluate, but this is the conversation today. Damn it. Um, back at development camp, you pointed at Alex Bump and you’re like, this is the this is the read I got on like Ivan Prover. He’s just too good to be here. Yeah. Alex Bump today at rookie camp. Did that trend continue? Yeah, and I put this in my article that it’s kind of hard to really get a good read from day one of rookie camp. I I equate it to day one of development camp. You never really get a good read from day one of development camp. It’s not until you get to like day two, day three, day four where you start to really get a handle on who’s actually standing out because hey, this is the first day back from summer vacation. A lot of these guys, it’s the first time they’ve really been in a formal group setting. So, I don’t put too much stock into what I see from day one of rookie camp, the games are really the the centerpiece of rookie camp in terms of who’s standing out and who’s disappointing. I will say that in the limited time I got to see the players out there, Bump looked good. He he still looks I wouldn’t necessarily say head and shoulders to the degree that he was at development camp, but he looks really good. He was flashing that shot. He finished on a number of chances, beaten goalies clean. Uh the passing I thought was maybe the most impressive part. He threaded the needle on quite a few chances um when they were doing uh blue line in uh battle drills. It was basically like I think it was like a fouron three essentially. Yeah, I saw some game situation stuff. So it wasn’t just like skating the circles. They did some things. Exactly. And he he had a couple really nice passes where he was fine and he found Sam to Amal a couple times. That could be a preview of what we might see in the rookie games because it looks like they might be grouped together along with uh first round pick Jack Nesbbit. Possibly could be a fun first line for the rookie games. Uh he was doing everything he did at development camp. He still looks like an NHL caliber skater. He’s still going to the dirty areas, carrying the puck into the slot, going to the net front area. You still see that plus shot. So, I would say that it wasn’t as if he was making people’s jaws drop out there, but he still looks like the guy from development camp. Would you would you just say it’s like a polished game whereas like we’ve talked about Jack Nesbbit and their view of him how it’s probably going to be a little bit of a project like he is a guy who you just go and like developmentwise yeah he needs to adjust to each level he plays at but just the way he looks out there is what an NHL player looks like. Yeah, it’s an interesting it’s an interesting way to to to kind of look at it because if anything, you know, Nesbbit’s game actually is surprisingly polished, his details for him, it’s just the skating. Like that’s the part of his game that he needs to clean up because the skating is nowhere near NHL caliber. Bump, you know, Luchenko is probably a more polished player. Bump is a little rough around the edges in terms of the way he plays, but that’s what makes it exciting kind of his playing style. He makes plays and some of the plays he’s going to try to make aren’t going to work. And you might look at and be like, “Well, that’s not super polished.” But then he makes plays that no one else is even trying to make and that’s what makes him exciting. Were there we we’ve talked about all right um maybe he’s going to have to learn a little like Emil Andre like we love that you’re trying to make plays but keep your head up kid. Yeah. Um was there any like and then Hunter McDonald stepped into him moments anything like that for Bump today? He did not get crushed, at least to my eyes. I missed the beginning of the second half of the session because I was getting some work done on my laptop when they moved over to the secondary rink. I did not see him get crushed, but I did see him make some maneuvers to the middle of the slot where Yeah. In rookie camp, you’re not going to get crushed in game 10 of the NHL season. Probably will. Yeah. Victor Hedmond is not going to let that stand. No. Yeah. when it’s when it’s Arbor Jackie and not like a dude who doesn’t want to hurt his buddy like it’s probably a little different. So, all right. Just something to keep an eye on. I am really really hoping to see Alex Bump make this team just because it’ll be fun. It sounds like he is a really really cool player to watch. Just a little bit of an element this team needs like that north south kind of he’s trying to make plays. He’s trying to score, but get in on the for check, be disruptive, be a little chaotic. I think Taketta’s going to like that. So, I think I think I think the rookie games are big for Alex Bump because right now, you get the sense that he’s just been so impressive that it almost feels inevitable. It’s like, well, we can’t not put him on this team. Like, he’s been great. He’s done everything. He was impressive in the AHL. He was great at development camp. He’s off to a pretty good start here in rookie camp. if he goes out there and scores a few goals and looks like one of the best players on the ice in these rookie games, he’s going to hit main camp with just the narrative around him, and I’m not even just talking about the media. I’m talking about upstairs. The narrative around him will be like, “We got to find a place for this guy on the team. He’s just too good.” Whereas, if he goes out there in the rookie games and is just okay, it’s not going to kill his chances, but suddenly he just doesn’t have that same momentum. So I think the rookie games for him are maybe even bigger than they are for somebody like Luchenko or Gurbankin where they have, you know, Luchenko was on the team to start last year. They clearly want him to uh to to play to to play his way on the team. Obviously, he’s not going to get the opportunity to be in the rookie games, but point being is that and and somebody like Rebankin is pro ready and he’s a little bit more bottom sixer type where if he doesn’t score a ton of points in the rookie games, no big deal. bump is kind of riding the wave and I think it might hurt him a little bit if that wave crashes a little bit in these rookie games. Yeah, it’ll it’ll be the first like evidence of like okay well maybe there is a little something and while Danny Breier is going to make a lot of the like the coach does make a lot of these decisions it’s not just the GM going well we want him like oh can he play a role on my team he has to show it. So that’s Alex Bump. Uh, next guy you have on the list. Alex Bump was at 45. Now we start with a couple of 35s. The first being Nikita Grabankin. You said pro ready. He’s played in the KHL. He has plenty of AHL experience. He got a little try out with the Leafs last year. I think he played like seven games. He got called up after a really hot scoring start in the A. How’s his progress? Like are we is he one of these guys who it’s Yeah. standing out. We are We kind of know what he is right now. I wouldn’t say that he was eyepopping, but the big thing that jumped out to me with him at rookie camp on day one was just his strength. Like he looks he looks like an NHL player in terms of not just physically, you know, you can look like an NHL player. Hunter McDonald looks like an NHL player physically, but then you watch him, you’re like, ah, probably needs a little bit more work. It was the way he was playing. you know, he’s getting down low, you know, along the boards and people are having trouble getting the puck off him. He’s using his shoulder, using his leverage to protect the puck. He’s going to the the the high danger areas, going to the front of the net, and not having any trouble holding on to his place once he sets up shop there. In that way, he looks like an NHL player. And I think the big reason why he has a good chance of making the team, it’s because he can play a bottom six role. I don’t think they’re going to put I know you had him on your forward line. I don’t think they’re gonna put Alex Bump on this team if he’s a fourthline winner. Like I just I just don’t see it. I don’t see a world where they’re like, “Yeah, he’ll push Nick Deloreier to the press box.” I don’t think they do that. If he’s making the scene, it’s going to be in a top nine role. Gerbank could make the team as fourth line left wing and that maybe ups his likelihood a bit because it’s not like top n or bust with him. It’s yeah, he’s got pro experience. He’s physically ready. he could play a fourthline role for us at least to start the year, especially if maybe a couple guys go down in camp via injury and whatnot. So, I think that’s the big thing that helps Gerbankin is that he’s not a a scorer or bust type of guy at this camp. It’s also what helps Lucenko and we’ll get him get to him in a second, but I think Gerbankin could make this team as a fourthline winger whereas Bump has to make this team in something of a in the top nine. Okay. And it’s it’s not as if like Nikita Gerbank, okay, fourthline left wing, but he’s a guy you can find a role for, like we talked about the last couple of times, like maybe he’s netfront power play, too. There’s different ways you could utilize him. So, it’s not just, yeah, he played seven minutes, you know, like he might actually be able to contribute in other ways. And we know that this power play is a huge problem. If he can help it in any way, you have to try to find a way to get him in the lineup. So, I am uh he’s another one I’m looking forward to. Um yeah, so he’s still rookie. I I always struggle with who actually comes to rookie camp and I’m like it’s they have to be rookie eligible, right? Because he seems in my head too old, but he’s not. He’s not even the oldest guy at camp. Yeah, it’s generally speaking you have to be be rookie eligible, but it’s also an age thing. Like for example, Zade Wisdom, while he is no longer on NHL contract, he’s still rookie eligible, but he’s not at rookie camp. Like, so there’s a little bit of not fudging, but a little bit of discretion on the Flyers part of who we’re going to invite, who we’re not going to invite. Theoretically, they could invite whoever they want. They could invite anybody. They invited like Carson Dorward, who’s a little on the older side, obviously. But I would say that yes, you certainly have you certainly have to be rookie eligible. They’re not going to have a guy who played they’re not going to throw a Andre in a rookie camp. That’s just not what they’re going to do. But there’s a little bit of discretion on their part as to the the older rookie eligible guys. All right. Um before we move on with the list of guys with a chance to make this team, let’s take that first commercial break. We all have that friend, the guy who is set up, you know, he wants to be the place where everybody watches the games every week. You go over every Sunday for football, big playoff baseball games. He wants to host maybe that hockey opener coming up. But he’s got almost everything. got the great setup, got the bar, always orders the best food, claims to be a huge fan, but because he doesn’t have Xfinity, the actual game watching experience, less than ideal because if you call yourself a sports fan of every kind, you got to have Xfinity. Now for more information, visit your local Ford store. Built for families, ready for adventure. A true doit all SUV. All right, Chuck. Time for Jet Lucenko. Also, before we we get on this, 73 likes. Come on, guys. Got to get to at least triple digits. At least triple digits. I’m expecting much more than just 100. But we’re only at 73 likes 24 minutes into the show. We need to hit 100 at the very least. Come on, fam. There were pucks on the ice today. That means it’s hockey season. We need to get you going. We got to get you ready for the regular season. Do it now. Hit the like button. All right. Jet Luchenko. Charlie, you also gave Jet a 35% chance. Same. And in in fairness, I did this before I knew that he wasn’t going to be in the ice for rookie. Well, that’s what I wanted to ask. One, does the lack of let’s let’s live in the world where he is fine. This is precautionary and day one of main camp he is out there. Okay. Will h having missed rookie camp and that chance to get in the games, build some momentum hurt that percentage? It’s a good question. My first instinct is no because I know how much they like him. I don’t think Luchenko is in the position where he has to change anyone in the organization’s mind on him. I think everyone in the organization thinks he’s great and I don’t believe that him missing the rookie games and rookie camp is going to lower him in the estimation of anyone in the organization. I still think he’s going to get a very very long look at main camp assuming that he’s healthy. Now, there are two ways that it could hurt him, though. Number one, and this is the most obvious, if he’s just not ready for main camp, then that number goes way down because then you think, is he even going to participate in main camp? Is he just going to be dealing with this groin or whatever it is issue throughout the entirety of camp and he never even really gets a chance to show what he’s got. That lowers the number dramatically. Number two, and this is a mild concern, one of the reasons why they have rookie camp is to sort of give the rookies, the prospects, a chance to practice and get themselves into more active game mode with the training wheels on. He’s not going to have that benefit. He’s going to have to jump in. He’s going they’re going to throw him right into the deep end day one of main camp up against Shanqurier, up against Cam York, up against Travis Sanheim, up against Travis Kney. Now, maybe it won’t matter, but it’s probably a little harder because he doesn’t have the benefit of a week of getting his feet wet against players that he should be more capable of not dominating, but at least thriving against. It’s no warm-up, no like just confidence building situation where it’s guys your own age or guys with the same amount of experience as you, guys in the same uh level of development, and then you go. Now it’s just all right, man. Here you go. John Coutier, take a face off against you. Let’s see how you do. Um, he’s just going to have to jump right in. I like it. I like that test for him, but I do wish we were gonna get and I think everybody does. Like, I mean, just for the quality of the the rookie game. I want to see him play. It’s one of the guys I really want to go see out there. He was really impressive in the rookie game last year. It’s a bummer we’re not going to get. When we were all kind of like, “Okay, I don’t really know about this pick.” And listen, we’ll we’ll see how it works out. We’ve all been yelling about the reddrafts and everything. No one knows. No one knows a damn thing. But when he got out there on the ice in that rookie game, I suddenly went, maybe I need to rethink my take here. You know, he looked good. I would have liked to see how he looks a year later now. Uh almost uh what now? He’s 19 years old. Like I would like to see that. We’re not going to get it. But we are going to get to see him unless he actually is injured and he can’t play at all. We’re going to get to see him in NHL NHL preseason games. And sink or swim. I I kind of like this. I I don’t I don’t hate it as long as he’s actually healthy. Yeah. As I’ve said though, that’s my big concern and it’s going to be a little bit tougher to be sure. We’ll see where they place him. But just thinking about it, you know, let’s say he was, this is my point when I say that they’re just so high on Jelichchenko. I think that if let’s say he was on the ice for day one of rookie camp and in both rookie games he plays both rookie games and he finishes with one assist and isn’t super offensively assertive. I am confident that if we interviewed Danny and Brent Flair and John Stone after those games, they would be like, “No, he was great. He just didn’t pay close enough attention to all the little details. Like he’s so good. He’s so good.” Like I don’t think there is a world where they were going to come out of those rookie games even if he wasn’t doing much without thinking that he did great because they just love him. I want to use a Steph driver Driverism here. It feels as if almost Jet Luchenko is Danny Brriier’s large adult son like like he really he just really believes in this guy. Like this is his dude. I remember when they drafted him, it was like we were actually at one point he was playing so well in GE before the draft. We were rooting against him because we’re like we thought we were going to get this diamond in the rough and now he might go in the top 10 and like that’s how much they really like this guy. So I wonder like thinking about Alex Bump and how it’s a top ner bust role and we’ve said like yeah man he’s going to have to score a little bit to have a chance to make this team. Do you think it could be once we get to NHL camp in the NHL preseason games if he does all the little things but maybe not showing the offense quite yet? It’s still well in the fourth line role we’re going to use him in. We think it’s fine. Yes. Like you think he could make this team without putting up real good numbers in the preseason? Yes, I do. I I think they ideally wanted to put up really good numbers and then it’s just an easy decision. Exactly. But based on my conversation with Brent Flair a few weeks ago, it seems like they are open to the idea of him being a bottom sixer to start his NHL career. At the very least, a bottom sixer to get a trial, to get another nine game trial or however many games it ends up being. I don’t think they are going to say to themselves, yeah, he needs to be 2C or 3C to make this team. I think that they would be okay giving him fourth line minutes as long as he’s still getting 10, 11, 12 minutes. If he’s getting four or five, no. But if he’s getting four or five, they’re going to send him back real quick. All right. Uh the next guy on the list is Hunter McDonald. And I want to talk about him because I just I’m I’m a fan. But first, I got to tell you about the supporters club. That’s right. We’re launching the supporters club for people to support PHLY directly. All you got to do is sign up right here on our YouTube channel page for just five bucks a month. You’ll get a badge next to your name in the live chat and comments. We’re going to be having fun with this throughout the season. Um, you know, I’m here every night for every game. I’m sure we’re going to have some fun, me and Kelly, me and Charlie, who’s ever here for pre and postgame, watching along and uh recording some stuff. This is just a fun way to support PHLY. It’s not a payroll. You’re payw wall. You’re not gonna miss any essential content, just a little something extra for people who want to show us a little extra support. We appreciate all the people who support us and keep us going. Here’s another way for you to do it. Thank you in advance. All right. Hunter McDonald. Hunter McDonald. You gave him a 15% chance to make the team. I did. And this is maybe the only one where I was like, seems high. really. I just We know they were at least really high on him at one point. Uh but now he’s the oldest guy in camp. He’s 23 years old. He’s only entering his second full pro season. I thought he’d played two, but it’s only one. So maybe it’s just in my head that he’s older than he is, or at least has more experience than he does. But like, how far away do you get the sense when we talked about Spencer Gil yesterday? Here’s how I want to word this question. When we talked about Spencer Gil yesterday, you were like, in their heads, they have him penciled into the future blue line. That was definitely the case with McDonald at one point. Do you think it still is? Yeah, I do. I think they’re still very high on him. I think they like the way he finished last season. They like the way he played in the playoffs for the Phantoms. I think they were hoping he was going to move a little bit quicker, but I do think they liked what they saw overall last season. They like the progression. The big thing that helps him in this camp, and it’s not perfect. He’s a lefty shot. Yeah. Wrist line’s a righty, but there probably is a feeling that they could stand to have a little nastiness on the back end to start the season if wrist Lion is not going to be ready. Wrist Lion was apparently, I missed this, he was apparently on the ice today. He was skating. That said, his injury is a tricep tendon. He can skate. He can skate. So, it makes sense that he’s skating. I still don’t think he’s going to be ready to start the year, but what I will say with McDonald is I do believe they’re high on him still. I I know what you’re getting at in that he has more competition now. He’s got Carter Amo. He’s got Ty Merchesen, who we’ll get into a little bit later, but I think they still like him a lot. And I think that if, let me put it this way, he’s a guy where if he has a good camp, like an objectively good camp, not a we’re trying to convince ourselves he had a good camp because we really like him, and an actually good camp where he scores some points, he’s throwing big hits, he’s being very noticeable in preseason games. I think that they will look for reasons to put him on this team because they still like him as much as they do. That’s why I have him in double digits because I think that he is he’s respected enough by the front office that they will if he obviously impresses they impresses they are going to look for reasons to put him on the team. It just maybe it’s just that we haven’t talked to them in a while especially like you got they had the press conference yesterday but Danny wasn’t there. It just feels like the the hype train has slowed a little from what we had heard previously. It’s not crazy to me that he’s going to take a little bit of time. you know, he was a sixthround pick. He is a stay-at-home defenseman type. He’s going to have to learn to defend the best players in the world. If he’s going to have a shot at them and be able to cut down the angles of guys who are better players than him, but he has the smarts to be able to do it, he needs to bring that nastiness. So, it’s not nuts like, okay, he’s 23 and for a lot of prospects, that’s like we need to see something here. But the fact that he finished the year strong, I can see how I can see how you would have him in the double digits. The big reason why I have him as low as I do, I don’t have him in the 20s, is because if you if you ask me to guess which defenseman is most likely to earn a job out of camp, who counts as a prospect, it’s a prospect who is not at this rookie camp. Patel Grants. I think he is the most likely. He’s no longer waiver exempt, so he’d have to pass through waiverss. They’re very happy with how he played last year, and I do think he is more obviously ready for the jump. That said, he’s not at rookie camp. He will certainly be at main camp. He was on the ice uh the last couple days with the other vets in their informal session. So, he’s here. He I think is above Hunter McDonald on the pecking order. But if he slips a little bit, Hunter McDonald stands out, I think Hunter McDonald could jump him. And regardless of like what you think either’s guy sealing it, I feel like it’s Helg Gr’s. Maybe he’s not a differencemaker, but he’s ready for the NHL at least to be out there and he’s big and he’s big. brings a size and he’s a righty shot and the right hand. But I do think McDonald is mean and it’s like McDonald physically like we want this but Gr’s can probably just be better cuz he’s further along in his development. Yeah, I think that’s true. All right, next guy on the list you also have at 15%. I think this is why I thought maybe McDonald was a little high. cuz like well we saw Carson Carson Dor in the NHL like yeah it was only it was only a little bit but we saw him at here actually now he’s going to be 23 in six days he is pretty old for this camp he got the five games at the end of last season he played 11 minutes a game can’t say he really stood out but he was there it just kind of seems like Dorart is tagged for bottom six call up for life like maybe that’s kind of just what He is. But listen, it’s not as if this team is stocked with centers. Now, they’ve addressed the position, but one injury and we’re looking for guys again. Uh, three years at Michigan State, he put up 27, 34, 31 points. Kind of stagnant, uh, production-wise, but 15% isn’t nothing for this guy. Now, what I can tell you about Durart is that, and this is something I’ve heard dating back to development camp, the organization, there are people in the organization that are very high on him. And that’s why in an article you said they recruited him hard. That’s why I have him as high as I do because I think and I share this to be clear. I find myself mostly underwhelmed by Carson Dor when I’ve watched him in practices at development camp in games. I don’t see a guy who’s terrible. I just more or less see just a guy. He just to me looks like just a guy. But I can tell you that there are people in the organization pretty high up who think much higher of him. So, I think he will get every chance to make the team. Now, if it was my choice and maybe he could change my mind if he has a really good camp, if he’s really good in preseason games, he could change my mind. Right now, I’m looking at him as a guy who I would have pegged for the AHL. I just don’t know if they share that opinion. They might be looking at him and be like, “Yeah, he’s battling with Rodrigo Obulls to have that 4C spot and maybe he’s a little bit the favor because we really like him.” Personally, I don’t see a guy that I would race to put on the NHL roster, at least not yet. But I think there are people in the organization that are very favorably predisposed towards Carson Dor, and that helps his chances. I feel like with Dorart and the guy we’re going to talk about next, Devin Kaplan, like I could see them having a role in a bottom on a bottom six team, but this one specifically where it’s like I don’t know, we got like two guys who can score. Maybe this isn’t that sort of team, but down the line maybe when Yeah, man. We don’t need that much production from our fourth uh from our fourth line because Matthew Mishkov’s a 100point player. Like TK is still putting up 30 goals a season. We we’re starting to get 30 goals from Forester. Zegrist worked out. It’s all good. Like when that happens, sure. It just feels like the role that these guys are going to be, that’s not what the Flyers need right now. Yeah. Yeah. I I agree with you, but I don’t know if they agree with you because they might look at it. They just hired Rick Tocket. I don’t think Rick Tocket is going to have a problem with Grinders in his lineup. You’re probably right. I agree with you, but I’m not sure the Flyers share our agreement. The organizational view is different and makes sense. They might be perfectly fine winning games two to one. If this team wins a bunch of games two to one, Sam Harrison’s going to win the VZA like he’s gonna get like a they’re going to reinvent like a comeback player of the year trophy. He’s going to get like three different trophies if this team is like the best defensive team in hockey. All right, the next guy is Devin Kaplan and you have him a little bit under Carson Dor at 10%. He got into one game last year after three season defeating. It was the the the carrot for signing. Yes. The game that the game that Alex Bump decided he didn’t want cuz he wanted to be NHL ready. Devin Cap was like, “No, I want that NHL debut.” Yes. The we sure we will let you burn your game. Thanks for signing. Appreciate it. He got into that last game against the Isisles. Biggest game of the year. Greatest loss in franchise history. Um third round pick in 2022. He’s going to be 22 in January. What the hell was that word? January. I know. I thought you only didn’t know how to say February. I can say the first one. It’s the second one I can’t say, but that one just went aai. Um, like Dorart, uh, his college production pretty stagnant across his three years, 23 23, 18 points. Is he kind of in that same boat of organization likes him, but not sure what the upside is from an outside perspective? That’s where I’m at with him. And I’ll be honest, when they drafted Kevin Kaplan and even into his first year at BEu, I liked him. I like the upside. To me, he just never took a step. He just stagnated at BU, never really asserted himself offensively, and now I think they’re looking at him more as a a bottom sixer who can use his size. He does have a mean streak. He’s a big guy. He has good hands around the net. I think if anything his direct competition is somebody like Rebankin where they are kind of battling for a similar role where they they both theoretically have the skill to be a middle sixer but they both might end up if they make it as bottom sixers they both bring size to the table they both could be nefrron guys. I just think Gerbankin is better. So, I think Gerbankin is more likely to outplay Kaplan in a head-to-head matchup because I’ve never come away terribly impressed with Kaplan in especially in in these practice settings, but also when I’ve seen him in games, I thought he had some flashes in that final game 82. He had some plays, but overall, I don’t look at him as like a guy I would prioritize. I know they like him. I didn’t know if they were going to sign him to an ELC and they did. So, clearly they’re higher on what he is now than I am on him. So maybe he is able to use that as a springboard to earn a spot. When they talked about guys who had chances when they were talking on the record over the last maybe five, six months, they always mentioned Kaplan. So I got to keep him in the mix because they keep telling me he’s in the mix. You can only go by what they tell you cuz it it’s them. They’re the ones making the decision. Now we have had a bunch of ch, you know, times where, you know, John Torella is like, “Well, I just he just couldn’t get the ice time.” It’s like, well, he could have. You you choose, you know, but you they are the ones telling us, so we we have to listen. All right, let’s hit that second commercial break. We got 15 minutes. Let’s get to 200, gang. All right, so that was Hit that like button. That was Kaplan. Now, we go to a defenseman. We’re all interested in seeing Oliver Bonk. Uh I really I liked uh I liked what you were saying about Bon yesterday where it’s it’s not zero, you know, like it’s not zero. I know we’ve kind of it’s unlikely, you know, we need we need to see him in the AHL at least a little bit, but it seems as if they’re at least presenting to him the idea like we know you want to make it and you have a shot. We’re going to give you a shot. I like what I’m hearing about Oliver Bon and uh you actually had a tweet uh earlier today saying Bon says he put on 15 pounds of muscle this summer. He can feel the extra strength and battles. Uh he’s at 200 pounds now and the just eat until you get sick and then go to the gym thing made me laugh. But is he is he looking bigger? Just No, no, he looks more ready for pro hockey. He looks more built and you could see it on the ice. You could tell that there were there was one play and it was a it was a small play. Probably didn’t catch most people’s attention, but he it was it was when they were doing the blue line in drills and he was up at the point and puck goes back to him. He goes to pick up the puck. I don’t remember which forward it was, but a forward comes in to try to check him and try to knock him off the puck and the forward just bounced off of him. And that’s exactly what you want to see, especially in a rookie camp where a lot of these forwards are small. They’re prospects, too. But you want your defenseman to just be able to stand tall at that blue line under pressure and just have guys falling off of him because he’s that sturdy and he’s that strong. I was impressed by uh by Bon on the ice. One thing too, and this is, you know, maybe I’m letting my my journalism side come out a little bit too much here because obviously I want guys that give good quotes. Makes my job easier. I’ve interviewed Oliver Bon more than a few times since he’s been drafted. And while he’s never he’s never came off to me as a bad kid, he’s always come off as not a great quote. And sometimes you’re like, “Okay, is that a lack of confidence or is that just that, you know, he just doesn’t like to talk to the media or he’s just not a particularly loquacious guy?” Well, today for the first time, we had a really good interview with Oliver Buck. He was he was cracking jokes. This his big thing today was um explaining I had that quote in there about him saying like, “Yeah, I just ate a ton.” And then he was talking about how it’s Jersey Mike’s. Jersey Mike’s is has been his way of gaining weight this summer. And he was cuz he he says that he’s just like just eat all the time. And we all start laughing. He’s like, “No, I’m serious. That’s what I was doing. I’ve just been inhaling Jersey Mike’s subs all summer.” He explained that. And I’m not even just talking about lunch and dinner. I would eat lunch, eat a Jersey Mike sub, and then go and eat dinner. That’s Man, that’s some good for him. Yep. If If I’m just They don’t tell you about those bonuses of being a I know, right? I miss those days, man. Nine meals. I I miss I miss the days of of age 20, Charlie, when I could eat a 20piece McNugget and gain zero pounds. Yeah. Was the best. It’s freaking Adam Sandler and Big Daddy had it right. Now I drink a milkshake and my ass jiggles for a week. Um but uh but that’s Oliver Bon. But anyway, so uh so I thought Bon looked good and I like the fact that he’s starting to open up a little bit because look, it might just be a, you know, good thing for us journalists. But it also could mean that he’s just feeling a little bit more comfortable in his skin. He’s feeling more comfortable when he’s here in Philadelphia because he’s feeling like, “Hey, I should be here and I should be able to uh to make some jokes and make the reporter smile because I belong.” To me, maybe it just shows he’s getting a little bit more confident in himself and in his ability to show his personality. And that to me was a good thing. All right. Uh the last of the double digit odds to make the team out of the camp, Jacob Gocha comes in at 10%. Uh he got that little fourame call up last year when there were some injuries and I think that was right after the uh the trades from it was early early February. He got his uh he’s worked his way through the system. He’s played in the ECHL. He ended up scoring 20 goals for the Phantoms last year. I believe he’s one of the oldest guys at camp. Maybe the oldest him or Hunter McDonald. I think I think he is the oldest. I think Gocha is the oldest. Uh 10% that’s again not nothing. It’s We’ve seen him play some pro hockey. We’ve seen him in the NHL. He had a good year for the Phantoms. Is this Yeah, if there’s some injuries, he could find his way here into a fourthline role. What are you thinking about Gocha? Look, they they like him as well. They do like him. They obviously gave him the entry level contract, so they must like him. I thought he was pretty good today. Honestly, I didn’t put him in my article. I didn’t put him in the uh the breakdown uh on my postpractice notes video, which will be out later tonight. But I thought he showed some flashes. He had some good shots. He hit the post a couple times where it looked like he basically beat the goalie clean. He wasn’t bad and there’s something there. He’s got size. He can skate a bit. He’s right in that realm with Dorward. I think him and Dorward are in direct competition with each other if not to make the team to be the first guy that gets called up if a center goes down and you could plug him in at 4C. So, I think that’s more where he is. But hey, there’s a world where if he goes full John Sim and finishes with eight points in preseason, he can make the team. All right. Uh, coming in with 5% is our pal Samu Charlie. Um, Samu Tamalo. We have spent a decent amount of time talking about him this off season. Two AHL seasons under the belt. He was a second rounder all the way back in 2021. He’s going to be 23 in January. Does he seem right now like a guy poised to take a next step and finally show this organization like I belong? Well, he kind of has to because he’s on the last year of his contract and there are a lot of good prospects coming. There’s good prospects coming this year. I mean, Alex Bum if he doesn’t make the team could push to them all down the down the depth chart in Lehigh Valley. Denver Barky almost certainly will push him down the depth chart in Lehigh Valley. Yeah, Tuamal needs to make an impression of this camp with a new coaching staff that is forming their opinion of Samu Tuamala. One thing that Tuamala always had in his back pocket was that Tors liked him. Tors was impressed by him, by what he saw at main camps, at rookie camps. Now Torrs is gone. He’s got to impress a whole new coaching staff to Amala. I was I was enthused to see him today on the top line with Nesbit and Bump. That tells me that they’re going to give him a real shot to impress in these rookie games. And frankly, Tuasal should impress in these rookie games. He’s an older guy. He’s got pro experience, multiple years of AHL experience and pro experience over in Europe. He should be one of the best players in these rookie games. He should be scoring a couple goals at least in these games. If he doesn’t, yeah, he could get passed by. I don’t necessarily think they’re going to like not sign him. I don’t think they’re going to like do the the LA Noa thing. Need players, too. He needs to have a good camp and he needs to have a good year. But I’ve watched him have good camps before. That’s why I put him on this list as guys that could do it because hey, let’s say a couple uh couple top six forwards go down to injury. They don’t maybe Bump gets on the team, but there’s still another spot available. They don’t think Bark’s physically ready yet. Yeah, Tu could make this team because of injuries or he can make this team because he just has a great camp because we’ve seen him do it before. We talked about this a little the other day and just the idea of like where he fits in and you talked about that with Brent Flair. Is the thing holding him back right now like he has to be in the top six? Like we can’t trust him in a bottom six role. Well, I think that is part of it, but a lot of it is they believe that he needs to recalibrate to become a bottom six type if he wants to have a long-term role with this team and he hasn’t done that yet. So either he does that or he just hopes to God a top six role opens up and then performs well when he gets it. All right, we now go to Ethan Samson. And I want Samson to make the team, Charlie, simply because the name. Yeah. When you when you go to Flyers PR, whoever it is, and you know, someone has a great game and you ask for them after, I want you to say, “I want to talk to Samson. I really, really want that for you and for me.” Okay. Um, you put him at 4% to make this team out of camp and, uh, he’s a percentage point ahead of the guy we’re going to talk about next, Denver Barky, who I think just a lot of us have ranked a lot higher in our heads. Explain, uh, his his path to the NHL, at least out of this camp. Well, I think it’s worth noting he had a good year last year. Not a lot of people pay attention to Ethan Samson. He scored 12 goals in 24 points in 69 games. led all Phantom’s uh defenseman in goals. He’s a big right-handed shooting defenseman and they have a big right-handed shooting defenseman who probably is going to be ready for the start of the year. Now, I’m not expecting Samson to make this team. He’s at 4%. Yeah, I’m not expecting him to, but I do think that he’s in a position where he’s probably physically ready enough that if he has a strong camp that they might put him on the team that like if in a perfect world for him, he outplays Helg Grimes, he outplays Hunter McDonald, you know, he outplays Noah Jules and Dennis Gilbert, the two vets they brought in to be like seventh defenseman types. I don’t think they will be scared to put him on this team. He’s got two years pro experience in the AHL. He had a good year with the Phantoms last year. He shoots right. He’s he’s tall. He’s big. He’s getting more built. I don’t think you can rule out entirely the possibility that he makes a team. Even if I don’t think he’s going to make this team. All right. Below him, Denver Barky at 3%. And we all know what the deal is with Barky. We talked about his London teammate. He’s just housing Jersey Mike. Is Denver Barky looking like a starting to look like a grown-up? He looks a little bit more grown up. He definitely did not put on as much weight as Oliver Bond did, but he’s one of the frame like he’s going to have to bulk up slowly otherwise he’s just going to like kill himself, you know? Exactly. So, but he is starting to look a little He looks a little bit more like an adult. Yes, he does. To me, I I put him at nonzero for this just because he’s got a lot of talent. He’s really good. And there’s a world where he Bobby brinks this where you’re like, “Yeah, there’s no chance.” And then he’s, you know, there’s a world where he goes back to the AHL real quick. But if he kills it in rookie games and then they give him a preseason game and he scores a goal or two, hey, sometimes a runaway train just starts going downhill and you can’t stop it. I don’t think it’s going to happen. I think their plan is to have him spend at least most of the season in the AHL learning the pro game, making sure he’s physically ready, making sure he’s not going to get killed out there just in terms of getting blown up. But hey, he’s a real talented player who scored a ton of points in juniors, and if he has a monster preseason, maybe they give him a game or two and see what he can do. I love the guys you have a four, a three, and a 2%. And I like that you it’s just the most Charlie thing like well I’m not going to make it zero because there is the possibility. There’s a world there is the world. Um but I I it’s it’s a real real low percentage chance. Um I Denver Barky if nothing else looking forward to seeing him in the rookie game because we didn’t get to see him last year. Now he’s a year older and I maybe he’s the outlier. Like that’s what I just keep thinking about Denver Barky is that these dudes do happen. Yeah, they do. Maybe it’s him. There’s nothing about his production that suggests it couldn’t be. Like, oh yeah, you know, he’s Well, no, he’s awesome. Like, he was at two points a game in the playoffs. You know, the Memorial Cup, he was tearing it up. Maybe he’s the outlier. Finally, Tai Merchesen at 2% 2021 fifth rounder. He’s going to be 23 in the uh second month of 2026. Um I don’t even know. I I honestly can’t remember who Ty Merchesen is. So, I was glad that you put him on the list to remind me he exists. Went to Arizona State, got a contract um a few months back at the end of his college season. He’s never been a guy I’ve been super high on, but they like him. They do like Ty Merchesen. He’s in the Hunter McDonald vein. He’s a bigger physical mean shot blocking defenseman. I don’t think he makes this team even with a strong camp because he just signed. He just turned pro. That said, I know they liked what they saw from him in his brief stint at the AHL level at the end of last season. They were impressed. They were like, hm, he might have something there. So, I don’t want to put it at zero because I don’t think if I think Hunter McDonald has a chance to make this team, and I think there’s a world where Tai Merches outplays Hunter McDonald. Okay. If that happens, maybe the door gets open to crack for him. All right. Uh, just a little bit of time left. You had other guys on the list. There’s plenty of other players who are at zero like Jack Nesbbit. We said he’s going to be a project. Of any of the prospects or under the radar guys who are at zero, is there anyone who just like stood out maybe you’re going to be having an eye on tomorrow uh or Saturday at the rookie games that okay, they popped a little. Well, I think Carson Bejian is the big one just because there’s two goalies at this camp. The one goalie is an invite. He’s the only goalie that really matters. And it’s easy to pay attention to a goalie. As hard as it is to pay attention to a goalie in practice, it’s extremely easy to pay attention to a goalie in game situations. And we’re going to get two of them. My guess is that I’m curious if it’s going to be gets the first game, the other guy gets the second, or if they’re going to split time both. Unsure, but Bejian is going to get more time, I imagine, than the other guy. Um, and I’m curious to see how he does because he was really good in last year’s rookie games. All right, I think we’re going to do it, Charlie. We’re going to get out of here. A I was going to wrap it. I was going to try to get out of here, but go to allphy.com to finish watching. Um, all right. That’s that’s pretty much it. Yeah. The the only big piece of news that came out during the show, uh, the NHL did announce that the uh the Hockey Canada players um are suspended until December 1st, then they will be eligible to play. They can sign a contract as soon as October 15th. All right. Well, that’s uh that’s the update of that situation and we will all continue following it as uh as it unfolds. But that is all the time we have for you on PHLY Flyers today. Thank you all for listening. Thank you for hanging out if you haven’t already. Got to hit that subscribe button.
