Pray for Wheeler who “is slated to have thoracic outlet decompression surgery Sept. 23”

  1. Listen, I’m not religious… but I’m willing to fake it so the Big Guy *thinks* I am until Wheeler’s recovered

  2. Thank god we have him, and not the Yankees.

Given their recent track record, they would have covered up the injury, and forced him to pitch until he collapsed on the mound.

  3. Honestly if Wheels retires I completely understand. This is much bigger than baseball and he will always be one of the best Phillies I’ve seen pitch. Win it all for Wheeler 🙏

  4. Has any pitcher had the same injury and came back to pitch again? So far everyone I know who had this didn’t pitch again.

  5. Folks, this is a very recoverable surgery.

In a 2024 study of 52 players, 46 of which were pitchers, 79% went on to play again at the same or higher level 9-1/2 months later. Yes, Strasburg *is* on that list. However, as u/Miravek has stated, Wheeler has the venous version of TOS. *NOT* the neurologic version. Meaning his issues do not affect the nerves and he should be able to come back and pitch.

You’re right to be worried about what degree he can come back to. But, Merrill Kelly had this same surgery in 2020 and he was still throwing very well as of 2023 as we are aware, as he was pitching in Game 2, and Game 6 of the 2023 NLCS.

Wheeler will likely have no issues finishing his contract as promised. And likely still at an elite level.
