Flyers Rookie Series Reactions, Fedotov Trade, Luchanko & Bonk Updates | PHLY Flyers Podcast

[Music] Hey everybody, how you doing? Well, that’s good. Welcome to PHLY Flyers presented by your local Ford store and Bet 365. My name is Bill Matz. I’m your director, Fun and Games for the evening. Joining me live in the Xfinity studio, it is Philly’s number one hockey beat writer, Charlie O’ Conor. What’s going on today, Chuck? Uh, not much given the fact that this weekend was just like a constant barrage of flyer stuff. They really remember how I said on Thursday I was like wasn’t really back to school. No, we’re we’re not just back to school. We got tons of homework from day two on. We have rookie camp, the rookie games. We ended up doing the live show from the rookie games Sunday morning. It’s like, “Oh, you’re not off. There’s a trade. Day to trade.” Uh, and now we’re back at rookie camp today. Tomorrow, Danny Brier will be meeting with the media. It is uh it is, as they say, we’re we’re back. We are so back. We are so very back. And so too were a couple of guys at uh on the ice today. Let’s talk about a couple other things first. Namely, Big Brothers Big Sisters. That’s right. It is Big Brothers Big Sisters month here at PHLY and all across the All City Network. And we are attempting to raise $50,000 to donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters. If you want to be a part of this cause, it’s very simple because we have the link for you right below the chat box right here on the YouTube page that you’re watching currently. right there it says donate now. It couldn’t be any easier. Uh and you can make a contribution to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Um it’s a worthy cause if you think about it. You are all very uh very gracious with all of the super chat money. Maybe for this week and the rest of this month, put that super chat money to Big Brothers Big Sisters and uh help out some people in need. All right, Chuck, Lucenko and Bon, they are back. Not only are we so back, they too are so back. Both on the ice today. Lucenko participating in the scrimmages, the informal veteran skates, the captain skates, scrimmages, whatever you want to call them. He’s out there. He’s out there and it’s basically the NHL guys, the veteran guys. He’s with them. And we had Oliver Bon uh back on the ice in rookie camp. Uh what can you tell us about either? Yeah. Well, Luchenko, I think, is the bigger story because based on what I heard last weekend about Bong. Like, look, I I have my my natural skepticism when they seem pretty confident he was going to play on Saturday and then they’re like, “No, no, no, never mind.” But I had some conversations during that game with people in the organization that were like, “Don’t worry, he’ll be on the ice tomorrow.” This was not tomorrow, on uh on Monday. That this really was no big deal. There was just no real need to throw him in there because whatever, this game’s going to be a wash anyway. Especially the second of the two games. We saw the second game. Yeah, it was pretty kind of turned into something else. Yeah. Why get him hurt in a exhibition? Yeah. So, Bonk, I was not at all surprised to see him on the ice. I was expecting it. I didn’t think the people I talked to on Saturday were going to be straight up lying to me about that. Luchenko was a surprise. was a very pleasant surprise because number one, he was on the roster for rookie camp and then suddenly they’re like, “Oh no, wait a minute. Sorry, he’s not out there. We haven’t seen him. Number two, like the fact that he’s skating with the vets, it does lend more credence to the theory that yeah, for him they just didn’t think rookie camp was that big of a deal.” Because until this you were like, “Yeah, they might say that, but we haven’t seen this guy on the ice since the Phantoms were out of the playoffs.” Like, that was the last time. That was back in April, wasn’t at Dev Camp, wasn’t he was at Dev Camp, he wasn’t on the ice. Not on the ice at the So, at some point, you’re like, if he’s still dealing with the same groin injury he was dealing with in July, that’s a concern. Him being on the ice with the vets doing just a normal scrimmage with them. And I wasn’t there to see this, but Jordan Hall was there early and he said that cuz I got there probably around like I don’t know like 10:30. Jordan’s always the first one there, which I I don’t really understand why he feels the need to get there an hour and a half early, but like sure, good job, Jordan. He was there and he said like, “Yeah, Luchenko was was looking fast. He was he was making moves out there in the scrimmage.” And so that’s good. Yeah. That that tells me that okay, we maybe can can pull back a little bit on the worry that he’s not going to be ready for main camp. Yeah. And that’s listen, we’ve we’ve talked about we we’re really looking forward to seeing if Jet Lucenko can push to make this team. But if he was unable to participate, if he’s got a nagging groin injury, I can’t imagine. They’d be like, “Oh, yeah. You maybe got into one preseason game, you couldn’t do most of camp.” Yeah, yeah, yeah. You’re on the team. Like, that just didn’t seem like something that was likely to happen. So, now at least he uh he has that chance. And it’s just good when they tell us something about an injury and it turns out to be true, right? I get very happy when I don’t feel lied to about the injury reporting because listen, I don’t need to know what an injury is, but if you tell me something isn’t serious and it’ll be fine and then, you know, Rasmusion isn’t seen again until the following fall, it’s like I come on, give me something here. I need to at least know if the players are going to be available. The Russo stuff over the last two years has been the I was we were talking about this in the press room today. It’s been the one remaining vestage of the Chuck Fletcher we’re going to tell you a guy’s dayto day and then his career’s over. Ryan Ellis did like did they ever even tell us or was it went from day to day to week to week to yeah you ain’t going to you ain’t going to see him ever again. Like it it just kind of happened if you remember. It was just like a report like they didn’t if you remember he showed up s was a surprise thing he showed up for because that was that first season he played the what four games and then then disappeared then he was gone he shows up for exit interviews randomly they were like do you want to talk to Ryan Ellis like Ryan Ellis he’s here and then he explains that we figured it out and we’re confident that we’ll be ready for next that I’ll be ready for next year everything’s going to be great it’s been a frustrating season but I feel like we’ve got it handled And then by midsummer they were making moves as if Ryan Ellis was not gonna be ready. And then you talked to people in the organization and the word was, “Yeah, he ain’t gonna be ready for camp.” And then within a month into the season, it was, “Yeah, he’s never going to play hockey again.” So those memories stick with you. And the Risto stuff has been over the last two seasons very similar to that. understandably when you hear Jet Luchenko and and it’s it’s not even just it wasn’t even just the fact that they missed it. It was that there were mixed signals and that’s what gave you memories of it because with with Luchenko it’s like well maybe they don’t care that much about rookie camp with him. Well, if that was true then why have him on the roster to begin with? Why have people be talking to Jackie Spiegel in the days leading up to rookie camp saying, “Yeah, we expect him to be ready and then he’s not ready and then well he’ll be ready for main camp.” Okay, so he’s now he’s not on the roster of rookie camp and Oliver Bon, oh, he’ll play Saturday. Ah, never mind. He’s not playing Saturday. They haven’t done the greatest job of managing these two situations in the public. Yeah, but it all will be forgiven if they both can play for first game of main first day of main camp. If they’re just out there in a preseason game, like that first preseason game, I think is the 21st. Like if they’re just out there like, okay, well, all is forgiven. But until then, until then, it’s like, well, what is it? Yeah. you know, which of these directions are we going here? But luckily, they’re both on the ice today, and that is good. Um, Jet Luchenko, and this is what I want to do, looking at uh your article uh recapping uh the rookie series. You kind of broke down who are the standouts and who were some disappointments and stuff. So, I want to go back to last week, the article that had the percentages to make the team for each guy, and I want to know if you would uh if you would change some of those. So, let’s start with the two guys who didn’t play, but we got injury news about them right now today. Would you still have Luchenko at 35 and Bonk at 10? Yeah. Well, Luchenko definitely Bon maybe not. The one thing that helps but that helped Bon about this weekend truthfully, it’s that none of the other defenseman looked that great. Like, yeah, it’s Hunter McDonald was average. Yeah. Um Ethan Samson Samson had some good plays, had some bad plays. Spencer Gil was never going to make the team, but he was nothing eyepopping. So, Bonk, if anything, stays at in that general range just because it’s not like anybody jumped him. It’s not like anybody who was on the ice, you know, it’s not like Hunter McDonald had the big game and you’re like, “Oh, wow. Hunter McDonald now I had to bump him up so that hurts.” Bonk. Lucheno is definitely the same because if he can play, if he’s healthy, he’s going to be in the mix. That’s a fact. My main concern was, is he actually going to be ready for main camp? Well, he was on the ice today. looks like he’s going to be ready for main camp. Bonk though, I think it would have helped him if he was able to impress in the rookie games and the fact that he wasn’t now he has to go out there and impress against NHL players rather than just prospects is going to be tougher. So, probably would lower his percentage a bit just because one of his most likely paths to getting a job would have been blow the doors off in the rookie games. Well, he didn’t play in the rookie games so he didn’t get that chance. with the guys in the rookie games. It’s like, well, Hunter McDonald and then Ethan Samson and there’s not a ton of like, oh yeah, man, these guys are ticketed for the NHL, at least any time in the near future. Spencer Gil they like, but he’s a while away. If he goes out and it’s, oh yeah, man, he’s head and shoulders better than Hunter McDonald. Suddenly he’s higher on the depth the organizational depth chart and that doesn’t happen. So, we’ll see how it goes. Yeah, I don’t think he hurt his chances, but it’s just like you could have helped and you didn’t. Yeah, I I don’t think this affects Lucenko negatively at all. I think Bonk It’s easier for me to imagine Lucenko impressing against NHL competition at main camp than it is for me to imagine Bon doing it. That’s not saying he can’t. And if he does, hey, maybe he puts himself in the mix. But this would have been easier. he would have been able to to get people thinking a week early of, man, Bonk, he looks real good. And then maybe if he has an an okay first preseason game, it wouldn’t be as big of a deal if he had the the two great rookie games to hang his hat on. Now he doesn’t have that. Now he really has to be great at main camp. And maybe he will be. And that was, listen, he’s a year older, but didn’t this happen with Bon last year where it’s like, well, hold on. Torch really likes this kid. and then they saw him play and it was yeah that’s not happening that he needs we’re not we’re not there yet. All right, so those are those guys. Before we get to the rest of the rookie game recaps and talking about those guys who played, we covered the Fedav trade in a little emergency show yesterday. You can check it right here on the PHLY YouTube. It’s like the next video down probably in the playlist. Um you’ll see it right there. Check it out. lots of people have. Has there anything come up like just thought in your head about this trade that we maybe didn’t talk about or you wanted to talk about more since then? Well, I think the one thing that I was thinking about more and more over the course of yesterday is why the heck Columbus did this. I don’t get it. Because here’s the thing. One of the reasons why, one of the stated reasons why they did this trade is because they want to know that they have a third goalie that they can send through waiverss who isn’t going to get claimed and they can have him in the in the in the minors and be like, “Okay, well, we can bring him up if one of our two guys gets hurt.” And that’s fair at first glance. But then you think about it, if that’s true, and it’s like, “Well, we’re getting a goalie because we know that we’re not going to lose him. Why didn’t you just wait until the end of camp? Yeah. Claim him when the Flyers inevitably waved him because you knew the Flyers are going to wave him. They more or less said that. Claim him then. Then yes, the week of that claim would be a little bit iffy because then you then they would have to wave him again to be able to send him down to the AHL, give the Flyers a chance to reclaim him. But, you know, the Flyers aren’t going to reclaim him. They don’t want him anymore. So, I don’t know why you give up a sixth round pick just to avoid having to do waiver gymnastics for like four days in October. It just seems like it just seems like Don Wedell just didn’t feel like going through the paperwork, so he gave up a sixth round pick just not to be bothered with it. And look, a sixth round pick isn’t that valuable, but it’s something. I just don’t know why he just lit a sixth round pick on fire so he wouldn’t have to go through waiverss for a little bit for like four days. Maybe just like thinking about it because I was like what? Why wouldn’t they just wait? Yeah. Like he’s going to get waved. Yeah. He gets to go through camp. That’s like the only benefit I can think of. And also Columbus was a lot better than they were probably supposed to be last year. Waiver order. Now he probably gets through, but there is a really good chance. I guess there is not a good chance. there is some chance that he doesn’t get to Columbus because they are not like one of the three worst teams in the league. They’re kind of in the middle. So, they don’t just get whoever they claim. Someone else could have claimed him. I guess that’s true. But but but the but the flip side of that is if that is going to happen, they’re going to lose him anyway when they invariably send him through waiverss at the end of the camp themselves. I’m not saying it makes a ton of sense. I’m just trying to figure it out because like he’s expensive. He’s not very good. He’s old. I I don’t know. I don’t really know the reasoning for it at all. The only argument that makes some sense to me, and to me, it’s still not worth a six round pick, but sure, is the camp argument is that you get him to go through camp, you get him to familiarize himself with the Columbus organization. Your goalie coach is going to get a few extra weeks to talk to him. Maybe they can make some tweaks to his game that they feel like the Flyers didn’t make last year. Like, that’s the only thing that comes to mind. But other than that, I just don’t understand why they paid a sixth round pick to get a guy who they could have gotten for free in the beginning of October when the Flyers waved him. Just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. But hey, hey, as someone who covers the Flyers, I’m like, good move, Danny Brier. And maybe there’s some sort of I’m trying to think like, okay, so he’s going to count 2.125 when he’s buried against their cap. I know last year they got an exemption for being like below the floor when the season started because it’s like well yeah one of your highest paid players passing away you had a 10 million player who’s no longer with us maybe there’s something to that but like I don’t know I feel like the prover contract alone makes up the difference I I don’t think they’re going to be I don’t believe I don’t think they were below the floor they definitely have a lot of cap space which is why it wasn’t a big deal for them to pick off Fido, but I believe they are comfortably above the floor this year. Yeah. Uh they are spending they’re at like 82 mil. Yeah, they’re like I believe they’re comfortably above. Yeah, they’re well above the floor. So, it just it it it just the more I thought about the trade from the Flyers perspective, it makes perfect sense. You’re getting out from under the Fedo contract. Now, you’re no longer in a you know, in in a tough cap situation for the start of the season. And he was in a log jam. Now, you don’t have a goalie log jam at the AHL level. So, made perfect sense for the Flyers. Good job, Danny. I just don’t understand why Don Wedell wasn’t willing to wait until October to get this guy for free as opposed to giving up a six round pick for him. Just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me the more I thought about it. Maybe he’s just trying to find some of that Columbus trading for Russian Flyers goalie magic. He just thought he could pull it off. Maybe. All right, I want to tell you about a really cool new piece of merch we have here. Hey, all phy.com. Oh, is this the Jayen Herz one? The Jayen Herz. It’s a good one. It’s good. They win on Friday night 43 over the Rangers in overtime. Come from behind win. Grabben wins it in OT. Saturday doesn’t go quite as well. A 52 loss. Sounds like the game got real chippy and there wasn’t a ton to talk about from Saturday. It sounds like Saturday was kind of a forgettable effort for most of the players on the ice. That is what I would say as well. It seems like, and this is actually something that Riley Armstrong, director of player development, we interviewed him on Saturday. Check that interview out if you have not. Uh he was the uh person we got in availability today after practice. Totally. And he said something that makes a lot of sense, which is just thinks a lot of the guys were tired. You know, you had you played a 700 p.m. game, then the next day you play a 5:00 p. p.m. game. They had a hard practice on Thursday. It just seemed like they were a little gassed. And also the Rangers changed up their style in game one. It seemed like the Rangers were trying to outskill the Flyers. Flyers prospect pool is pretty skilled. It is. It’s not They don’t have everybody. obviously didn’t have Porter Porter Martone, a few other guys, guys like guys like Mertag, Amo, uh, Vanagi, guys in college, but I would say the Flyers prospect pool at the game and overall is more skilled than the Rangers prospect pool. But the Rangers prospects have one thing over the Flyers. They’re a lot bigger. And the Flyers prospect pool is not small anymore. The Rangers prospect pool though, like might be the biggest prospect pool in hockey. I think what they do after the fourth round is they’re like, “Okay, just like sort by height and let’s take anybody over six foot four.” Now, I remember them saying that last year and uh the first game we were like behind the net a few rows up. The second game I had seats right on the glass and it was like everyone’s up here. They’re huge. And the Flyers, their decor this year, I think you wrote nobody is big. Nobody under 6200 I think was at rookie camp. Correct. That said, you just named like all the college guys and stuff that aren’t there. Those are all the Flyers big prospects. Yeah. Like like we’re talking about Mertag, we’re talking about Amo, like these guys are big Vanagi. Like these are the bigger Flyers prospects. So it makes sense that they were able to bully them a little bit. Bolton can’t beat up everyone, I guess. Exactly. And they definitely in game two played more to that where it was, okay, let’s just try to out physical them. And they did. And I think part of that too was that the uh the Flyers process were a little tired. So they didn’t necessarily have the same energy that they had on Friday to avoid the checks and avoid the chippiness. It just was a choppy game. It was not a particularly aesthetically pleasing game to watch. I did think though the one guy who and this maybe shouldn’t shock you given his style of play, given the fact that he is a bigger guy who plays big. I thought Nikita Gerbankin was very well suited for Saturday style and he was good on Friday too, but I thought Saturday he was one of the few Flyers prospects who still looked really good and I think it’s because he is he’s made for that kind of game. Like Greben is absolutely got some offensive upside. He’s got good hands. He can shoot. But what separates him and why we think he might be suited for a bottom six role and could make this team is he can play that style. In fact, he kind of thrives on it. And when you have that skill and are willing to do that, like that does make you valuable. That’s why we think Rick Tocket could end up liking this guy quite a bit. Um I was really happy to read in your piece that like, oh yeah, he was there to answer that. In fact, he thrived. He looked better than he did the night before when he still looked pretty good. Um, and I that that excites me about Nikita Grabbankin because I’m not exactly sure like, okay, he’s got skill, he can score a little, maybe he’s net front or bumper on the power play, but really what’s his offensive upside, but if you can have that element, too, now you’re going to be an effective player. And I am looking forward to asking, you had Grabbankin at 35% to make the team uh when you wrote the article a week or two ago. um outlining each of the guys at rookie camp and if they could possibly make it out of camp. Gbankin at 35, he had two really good rookie games. He was physical. He scored a game-winning goal. Would you raise that 35%. Yeah, I’m not going to give you an exact number. What I would raise it to chances are better than the weekend. Yes, I I believe he helped his chances over the weekend because he played exactly the way that he’s going to have to play if he’s going to make this team. He played a physical game. He’s really good below the goal line. That’s where his playmaking ability shows the most. He goes to the net. He’s chippy. He’s physical. He threw a couple really big hits. But he also showed puck skills. I thought his playmaking in game one was more limited to what he did below the goal line behind the net. I thought his playmaking in game two was more wide ranging. He had a really good play because he had two primary assists in um in Saturday’s game. the second primary assist he had, he like basically went through like two guys in the neutral zone and sort of just like pushed the puck ahead to let one of his guys get it and that’s how the goal happens. But that showed number one the drive that he has. But number two, that’s in the middle of the ice. That’s not below the goal line. That’s not along the boards. I mean, he was fighting through contact in the middle of the ice to push the puck forward. That to me looked like an NHL caliber play. And that was exciting to me that he’s making plays not just in his preferred zone, but in the entire ice surface. That was exciting. When I first saw the highlight of that play, I was like, “Oh, well, he must be the one.” Cuz it was like a zoomed out like screen grab. So, I wasn’t exactly positive what was happening. I was like, “Oh, well, he must be the one collecting the puck and then he’s going to get it over to the other guy.” And then that guy just took it and scored. I was like, “Oh, Grabben made that happen in the middle of the ice and got the puck to that spot.” Okay, that was impressive. And I did really like from your piece, I pulled this one quote out, Charlie. Um, Gbankin has one clear aim in the offensive zone. Get the puck down low and then go to work. It was highly effective over the weekend. And this is just one of those things when I’m watching some of these. When I watched Alex Bump, and we’ll talk about him, when I watched Gbankin, what I saw out of Mishkov last year, I don’t think it’s crazy. like yes, this is going to be an adjustment for the Flyers to go from the last two years of block a shot and run your ass through the neutral zone. We are trying to get a twoon-one. That is our entire offensive philosophy is twoon ones. Uh but it’s not crazy to me that they could actually maybe excel at this possession game a little bit. Now, we’re talking about young guys. We’re talking about guys who are going to have to adjust to the NHL, become everyday players, but like I think they have dudes who can do it. Yeah. Yeah. I I I would agree with you. I just I think with Gurbankin, it’s like the big question for him from a is he going to make the team standway. Number one is is is going to be is there space? Yeah. Because if Jet Luchenko is on the team and Alex Bump shines, you’re like how many of these guys can you throw on the roster? Who gets pushed out? Unless people get injured, I don’t know if they can fit everybody. The other question though, and this is important, is what are they going to do with Nick Deloreier? Like under John Tordella, Nick Delore very clearly became a 13th, 14th forward. He was a guy who was a specialist, he would come in in a game here or there. If they felt like they needed a physical presence if they felt like a team might try to rough up one of their young guys, try to rough up Mishkoff. If there was a team with a fighter, like a Matt Remp type, okay, yeah, we’re throwing Nick in there. But it was very clear that John Terrell did not think that Nick Deloreier could play the pace that Tors wanted his teams to play. I’m not sure what Rick Taka is going to think of Nick Deloreier. If Rick Tocket looks at Deloreier and looks at his roster and is like, I want him in the lineup for 65 games. That’s kind of the spot that I’m thinking Gerbankin would fill. That fourthline leftwing spot. Y. So while I think Gerbankin very much has a chance and I personally would like if he ends up being the game one for left wing, this is very much also dependent upon what it views what his view of Nick of uh of Nick Deloreier’s daily role is going to be because if he thinks the lure is gonna play every day maybe there isn’t a spot for Gender. know that’s like I know we’re excited about a lot of these guys right now and I think some of them do have a real chance to make the team but really the only spot that I see is like wide open is 4C. Yeah. Now maybe for left wing but I’m not sure. And maybe even 4C isn’t open because D’Vorah could have that spot. I just feel like they have to play him in the top nine. Like maybe not. Maybe I’m wrong here. It’s just like I don’t know. I didn’t pay a guy $5 million to play eight minutes. Like I think that’s insane. But but it might end up being Oh yeah, Trevor Zaggers is fine down the middle. Sean Coutureier and the only spot we have for D’vorak is on is on that is is at 4C. But right now I feel like it’s you know what there’s just one spot on the fourth line open. Whether it’s at wing or center that’s kind of what it is. Now other things can happen. There could be trades. There could be injuries. But I am starting to realize I’m gonna have to temper my expectations of how many dudes can make this team because yeah, there’s only so many roster spots. like there’s a rule and and I think that’s one thing that works in Jet Luchenko’s benefit because there is a world where we get to the end of camp and like Alex Bump and Nikita Gbankin are both still here and they end up sending them both down and the explanation is look they played well enough to make this team and they’re going to be up probably in the next few weeks but honestly there just isn’t room like all the spots are filled and they didn’t play so well that they absolutely have to be here. So, they’re not going to hurt be hurt by playing a couple weeks down in the minors. Whereas with Luchenko, it’s an either or. So, he might get on the lot get on the roster. He could be one of the reasons why they send down Gerbankin or bump because it’s like, well, with those guys, we could bring them up by October 20th. With Luchenko, if he doesn’t make the team, he’s gone for the rest of the season until his junior year is done. And maybe not even then, if they actually get to the playoffs and go on a run or if he gets traded to a team that’s good. So that could end up working in Luchenko’s favor that with guys like Rebank and Bump, not that big of a deal if we set him down for, you know, five or six games. Whereas with Luchenko, he’s got to make the team or else he’s out of the picture for the rest of the season. That’s one or two of those AHL eligible guys affects not only themselves, but like Luchenko as well, whereas Luchenko, it’s just you’re here. Yeah. The other guys, if they make it, well, now we have to make a decision we don’t want to make. So if it’s a tie, I do think Yeah, Luchenko has the leg up just because we can always get them again. Exactly. Exactly. We can bring them up tomorrow. It’s just we need to figure this out today. I’m just thinking back to Joel Farby. Joel Farby didn’t make the team out of camp. He was up within like two and a half weeks. It was like, why just send him down? You know, did you do this to mess with him? I feel like you did. Maybe a little. Yeah, I think so. Is that where it started? Like you think it started right there? Oh, no. Oh, they liked Joel Farabby for a really long time. Not not the front office. Okay. The coach. Oh. Uh, but but that was No, you’re you’re going back. That was AV. That was Elena. I’m thinking about some other situ. That was the Elen situation. Yes. Yes, that was AV. Um, all right. Let’s hit on another guy you thought was awesome. Uh he only played in Friday’s game and when we spoke to uh members of the Flyers organization, they’re like, “Yeah, we saw what we need to see.” Yeah. Denver Barky, he was great. Denver Barky was really good on uh on Friday and on Friday there was a lot of standouts and it was maybe because it’s like we’re hoping for him to be so good, but also there’s that all right, we’ll see. I’m hoping. And then he comes out and once again it’s yeah man every time Denver Barky touches the ice he’s good doesn’t matter what level and he does it again like he did this two years ago in the uh rookie game when he’s you know 18 years old at the time and now last year he missed it because of mono he comes back out this year after missing development camp the on ice stuff being banged up long memorial cup run got hurt in the OHL playoffs he was maybe the best player on the ice Friday night he was really good um what I’ll say about Barky and about Barky’s chance because I get it. I get especially for the fans that were at the game or watched the game on a surprisingly solid stream from what I heard heard wasn’t bad. Much better than last year. So, people were actually able to see what was going on. I get why people are excited and why they’re thinking, “Oo, maybe he could surprise and maybe he could.” But I will say that the the vibe I was getting from the people I talked to on Saturday was let’s take a step back here that look if he goes out there in the NHL preseason games and not just the first one but like guess has a real good first game and earns a second game and then he has a real good second game and earns a third game and then we’re down to the final couple games when it’s basically NHL rosters and he’s still killing it. He would have to play so well that it would look bad to the rest of the team that he got sent down for him to make this team. They are still expecting him to eventually hit a wall and eventually have a just okay or a slightly below average game in preeason and then they’re going to send him down which is where they expect him to be. Barky basically has to make it so they can’t not put him on this roster of rim to have a shot because they believe that he needs what I what I had heard um talking with with people with the Flyers. It’s not that they don’t think he is working hard in the gym. is that they believe that he just like he needs to be stronger than the average player from a pound-for-pound standpoint to really be able to do what they think he will eventually be able to do at the NHL level, particularly in the lower body. Like, he needs to get a lot stronger in his legs. Not that he’s weak in his legs, but just that like I think back to, you know, you ever seen that that the the image of Marty St. Louis legs? Yeah. Like I don’t think he’s ever going to get to that point. No, that dude’s quadzilla. But my point is is that he was a small guy who realized that if I’m going to thrive at the NHL level, my lower body has to be ridiculously strong. And I don’t think they think Barky’s there yet. It’s going to take some time. Like you can’t just like Oliver Bon has a bigger frame to begin with, but I can’t I don’t think like just eating nine drenched Yeah. uh Jersey Mike subs is going to do it for Barky. like it is going to be a project, not just, oh yeah, I put on 20 pounds in a summer and I’m ready to go. Like it’s going to have to be a thing that comes along. He’s a very fit guy, but unfortunately because of his inherent physical limitations, he has to be more than just in good shape. He has to be very, very strong in certain areas of his body to be able to play the style he wants to play at the NHL level. Yeah. And it’s it’s just going to take some time. And it was when we were talking to Snowden and Riley Armstrong, especially on Saturday, it was like, “No, we we do the same thing. We have to temper our own expectations because we see him and he’s so good.” And it’s like, I know. I know. Like, I know it’s not going to be this easy for him and he’s going to hit a wall and he’s going to have to figure out how to play at this size. But yeah, man, we’re excited, too. Like, we watch this dude play and it’s like, this is great. But if if you’re asking, would I raise the percentage from 3%? Sure, I would raise it from 3%. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, no. If we’re raising the percentages, yes, but it is still still single digits. Single digits. Yes. Definitely still single digits. That’s because it’s just not about like, okay, you look good against rookies. What happens when it’s Jacob Troop? Yep. You know, like that’s that’s what it happens. And listen, I would love for Denver Barkley to make this team. I would love for Denver Barkley to be the outlier. like, oh yeah, he’s just awesome. Doesn’t matter. He’ll put on the weight eventually, but he’s good enough right now. It’s just like, all right, take a step back. Take a quick step back. Also, one thing I do want to point out at Denver Bari, I I respect the Flyers organization’s commitment to pretending that he’s actually 5 foot 10. Like, they actually put that on their rookie camp, like their rookie camp roster. There’s no way that man is 5 foot 10. Not a chance in hell. He’s like 5’8. I Well, he I I looked at his combine measurements. He measured into the combine at 58.75. So, you round up to 5’9. I do not think he is now 5’10. Seems unlikely. He was under 5’9 at 18. Yeah. Like I don’t know. I stopped growing in the sixth grade. Like this is how tall I was almost six feet tall like in the sixth or seventh grade and I haven’t grown a centimeter since. Like I don’t know about uh like guys who have growth spurts at 18. I guess it happens. Joel Embiid grew like another two inches after they drafted him they said. But like I I doubt the dude who’s this high is like oh yeah and then at 19 he grew like seems unlikely. It seems unlikely to me. It just seems unlikely. But I do appreciate the flyers trying to give him the little like no he’s actually 5 foot 10. We swear. Really? It’s like really It’s like the Allen Iverson listed as 6 foot and it’s like you meet him and it’s like Yeah. Yeah. Really? Like I let me put it this way. I am somewhere between 5’7 and 5’8 and me and Denver Barky ain’t that dissimilar in terms of height. It’s not that dissimilar. I’m willing to acknowledge. All right. All right, let’s talk about Alex Bump Charlie because you gave him the best chance to make the team in your article. 45% uh a couple of weeks ago. We thought he looked pretty damn good on Friday. Didn’t cash in, but was creating opportunities. The line with Nesbit and Tuo was really freaking good. I thought uh held pucks in the offensive zone. I swear their first shift was like three and a half minutes long. They were out there and there’s an offensive zone faceoff and I’m like trying to look. I was like and then uh Martitus and they’re on the stream and they’re like, “Oh yeah, it’s two. still out there. They were out there for like three minutes. Uh and they had the puck basically the entire time. Whenever they were out there, good stuff happened, but Bump doesn’t cash in Friday. Um not a ton of anything happened on Saturday. So, what do we think about Alex Bump and the uh the impression he made following his awesome development camp and the AHL experience he got at the end of last season? I would say he was good, but not overwhelmingly so. Friday, he was better. Saturday, I thought like a lot of the players, he looked a little tired. He wasn’t as effective. He still made some plays. He easily could have finished with two assists. He had one really really nice pass to uh to Matthew Guard. It was a it was a rush play. And uh he he basically, the more I watch the replay, at first I’m like, “Oh, maybe he just missed guard.” Cuz Guard all guard really would have needed to do was have his stick down and redirected and would have went in. And at first I’m like, “Oh, maybe Bump just missed that pass.” It really looks like on the replay guard just didn’t have a stick down. Yeah. If Guard would have just had his stick on the ice, that’s a goal. And then there was another pass he made to Ty Merchesen that Merchen rang off the post. So even in a game where Bump I thought was okay, he could have easily finished with two assists had his teammates actually finished on their chances and he was better on Friday. So I think he was good, but it wasn’t to the degree of, oh man, he definitely has to make this team good. It was he’s a well-rounded player. He’s clearly an NHL caliber player. He’s going to play in this league and he’ll probably play in this league this season. But it wasn’t he needs to be on this roster for game one. If he’s not in there, if he’s not in there game one, it’s a travesty. Like it wasn’t that sort of level. I did say Saturday, like just having watched him Friday, I need to see him at some point play with Ma Mishkov because I’ve never seen two guys where it’s the whole reason we’re out here is we get pucks to the dangerous areas. like they just whether they skate it, whether they pass it, whether they elect to shoot, like their whole reason for being on the ice is to simply take the puck to the net or figure out a way to get the puck into the net. And that’s really exciting just having that mindset. We go back to Gbankin there. This is kind of why I think they could potentially be a better possession team than they were the last couple years in which, you know, they never had the puck. Basically, they either were on a rush or defending. Um, I I think they have it and it’s because they have guys who one strong on the puck and two know what to do with it once they get it. I actually thought the the part of Bump’s game that impressed me the most in ter I maybe not even impressed but surprised. It surprised me how good he was along the boards. Yes, he was really good at winning battles along the boards and then bringing the puck off the boards to get it not even necessarily into dangerous areas, but at least to get it into a position where then he can get the puck to a dangerous area. He was very elusive, but he was also strong enough physically that if he had to go through someone along the boards to win a puck back, he could. And he did that a lot. That was one of those like, oh yeah, he’s going to be in the NHL soon. And look, I might lower his percentage a little bit, but not dramatically. If he goes out there at main camp and in the preseason games and looks good, I still think he makes this team. It just wasn’t, and I know this is a hard person to compare him to. It wasn’t Mishkov in the first rookie game last year where you watch him, you’re like, “Oh, yeah, this guy might be one of the best players on the NHL team right off the jump.” Not just like, “Is he going to make the team?” He Mishkov was out there last year and you were immediately like uh oh yeah this dude this is an NHL player this dude is this dude is not just an NHL player he’s an above average NHL player right now so much better than everyone out there like it was very very obvious bump was making stuff happen and that didn’t press me um just yeah he’s you know making plays with the puck carrying the puck passing it but when he didn’t have it he was relentless and winning a lot of those battles And he did do one of the things that I was hoping to see. Uh because we’ve talked like, you know, man, he likes to carry the puck into the middle of the ice a lot and that’s all well and good, but what happens when some behemoth steps up on him? Um they’re just bigger and stronger in the NHL than they are in college. He did make one of those plays where he stepped off of the wall with the puck, is carrying it to the middle, defenseman steps up, and he is smart enough to dish it to an open man who the defenseman left. And I was like, okay, there you go. Didn’t get elbowed in the head, uh, didn’t get knocked out. You made the smart pass and didn’t just try to bulldoze your way through. Cool. Good to see. Nice decision. And just those little things that get me quite excited about uh the prospect of bumping, you know, a few of these guys. I got the sense talking to Riley Armstrong on our show on Saturday and then talking to Riley again today after practice that they maybe they didn’t come away with their minds blown by Alex Bump, but they came away impressed. And I don’t think he hurt his chances dramatically of making the team by what he did in these rookie games last this past weekend despite the fact that he finished with a big old goose egg on the score sheet. Maybe not the yeah like blow everyone away screw camp, he’s on the team sort of performance, but they confirmation of all right, we know what this guy’s good at and we saw him do all of Exactly. All right. Uh next guy I want to talk to you about is someone who I and I said this on Saturday, he should have impressed us. He’s got two full years at the AHL. Samo Tuamalo though was very good on the opposite wing with Alex Bump with Jack Nesbbit in the middle. I really like that line. And I was impressed with Tuamala, much like Bump. Like it wasn’t just Bump winning those battles on the other wing. We saw Tua pick a guy’s pocket uh with a good stick lift uh to keep a possession alive. We saw him mixing up down low a little bit getting into scrums. He looked like uh he’s getting the message that we need a little more out of you. Yeah. Well, we talked a lot about this on on our show Saturday. First, I mentioned it, then Maddie echoed it when she came on the show, that he was much more physical and much chippier than we’ve really ever seen him play before, both over in Europe and at the AHL level. I would say one thing that impressed me, aside from that, which it plays into it, he had a good game on Friday. Okay, he had a good game. He was making plays. He was noticeable. He was physical. He didn’t score, but I would thought he was impressive. He was not playing as well on Saturday. And that’s where you’re like, there’s the inconsistency. Maybe he’s a little tired, whatever. They move him off the top line. They move him down. He’s on a third line. They moved uh Alexi Gendron up to that uh that Nesbit bump line because he was looking very good. and rather than pout to Amala then if anything amped up the chippiness and eventually drops the gloves and gets into a fight and then comes out of the penalty box and immediately sets up Carson Dor for a quality chance. I like the fact that he didn’t have his agame on Saturday, but he was still bringing the energy. He pulled himself out of his comfort zone. This is not a fighter we’re talking about. He is not a guy who’s going to drop the gloves much at all. I never even I don’t even know if he’s ever fought before in a in a in a pro game. It would surprise me, but he did it. And you know what? I guarantee you the guys watching up in the press box, you know, the the Flyers brass, they appreciated that even after getting pulled off the first line, he didn’t sulk. He was just like, you know what, I need to make an impression somehow. I’m going to do something that is not something I’m usually asked to do, but it’s going to get me noticed. I like that out of Tamala. I do. I do. I like that as well. And you know, Brent Flair said to you like, “We got to figure out a way because he’s not gonna play over Mishkov. He’s not gonna play over Kenkne.” So, we have to figure out a way to get him in a right-wing bottom six role. Can he be trusted with it? And it seems as if he is working towards that. My question though is like just based on you had him at 5% to make the team based on organizational depth chart and available roster spots. Maybe he was impressive, but would you really raise his percentages that much? No. Even though it was like, oh yeah, he was good. He was definitely good and we were all impressed. It’s just like still he’s below other guys in the depth chart. No, I I think his he doesn’t have much of a path to making this team out of camp, but his path basically is outplay Alex Bump for a top nine role, hope that Luchenko isn’t that impressive, and then be really, really good in the preseason games. He was good in the rookie games. He wasn’t really really good. And Alex Bump was still better than Samu Duamala in the rookie games. So, it’s still very low, but hey, if he goes out there in the preseason games and kills it, maybe he changes the uh he changes the direction of this whole thing. All right, the last guy I really wanted to talk about is Hunter McDonald. So, I want to get to him. You had him at 15% to make the team. And uh I don’t think anyone was blown away by Hunter McDonald’s performance over the weekend. Yeah, I didn’t love it. I I don’t think it was bad. And I do think that on Saturday you saw more of the nastiness that is, you know, a huge part of his game. It’s one of the big reasons why they love him as much as they do. It was a nastier game. It makes sense that he was more physical. He was mixing it up more. So, I like that it’s not gone. Friday, he was okay. Wasn’t great. I didn’t see much progression year-over-year from where he was in the rookie game last year with the puck versus where he was with the puck in these sets of rookie games. I don’t think he was awful, but I wanted to see more from him. If he’s going to make a darkhorse case to make this club out of camp, I feel like I I should have seen more. I didn’t see enough to make me think Hunter McDonald maybe should be in the mix here. It just feels like if and we talked like maybe I still think they’re high on him, but maybe they’ve taken a couple of guys who do some of the same things as him recently and it’s like, yeah, we’re not as crazy about the idea. We don’t need this guy to be in the NHL the way we did a couple of years ago when he was our favorite defensive prospect. You know, we’ve had a couple of drafts since then and now it’s maybe the organizational attitude is changing a little. Uh, that’s just me guessing based on how he’s progressed and what they have spent some draft capital on lately. Uh, but I was hoping he would be further along by now based on what I’ve seen. He just kind of seems like I don’t want to say this is what he is because he has more runway, but it is a guy he is older. I think he’s the oldest guy at rookie camp. Well, it’s because the reason why he’s older and why it’s surprising how old he is. So, he was passed over twice in the draft. He went four years of college. He was drafted, I believe, as a 20-year-old. Okay. So, that’s why he’s older, even though he wasn’t drafted that long ago. Yeah, that’s that sounds familiar. Okay. Uh yeah, I just I’m I’m hoping there’s more there with him just because I like him. But like I I’m starting to think maybe when you’re like, “Oh yeah, not a ton of progression year over year. Maybe this is what he is.” and maybe he could hold his own in a bottom, you know, like a bottom payer NHL role, but it just feels like guys are moving ahead of him. I’m just starting to think that when he, because I do believe he will play in the NHL, that when he makes his NHL debut, it’s going to be because guys got hurt and they had to make a call up rather than him banging down the door at camp where uh did he play any on the right on Saturday? Uh no, he was pretty much exclusive on the left. He was he was mostly with uh with uh Luke Fluzwick I believe again and uh and that was pretty much left side. Okay. I just I noticed him have a couple of shifts where he was on the right point on Friday and I wanted to see if maybe it was just a thing that happened like he was the first one out the door the left guy was still out there or maybe they were trying to cross train him a little because listen we have no idea what’s going on with Risto. Yeah. The the thing with that that makes it tough is the guys who can usually play their offside on defense tend to be the really good puck handlers because they’re the ones who can make more plays on their back end because you have to do that if you’re playing your offside. And I just don’t know if you can trust Hunter McDonald to have those kinds of puck skills to be able to thrive when he’s not on his strong side. I always I was a lefty that played the right side and my thing was well I suck on the left side too. I’m no good on my forehand or my backhand. So, I think that’s what Hunter McDonald is thinking, William. I just think like, all right, well, if he’s not going to be good any good with the puck on his forehand, what’s the difference? But I don’t I don’t think that that is the way you run an NHL team, though. He’s okay. He’s not It’s not like he handles the puck like a hand grenade. It’s just that he was okay with the puck in last year’s rookie games, and he continues to look okay, but not great with the puck. Now, this just might be his level of acumen with the puck and it might not get any better than it already is. Now, like point play and everything is one thing and like leading the rush or whatever, but Matty said he was pretty active. Uh he activated No, no, he jumps up in the play. He he’ll activate down lower in the offensive zone. He’ll carry the puck through the neutral zone on occasion. So, yeah, he’s not purely a stay at home, stay in one spot type of defenseman. He’s got some aggressiveness to his game, and I like that about his game. It’s just that he’s also not making big old plays with the puck either. We only got five minutes left, but we’re at 190 likes. So close to 200. Get that to 200. Let’s go. All right, five minutes left. I think we have one super chat. Uh, is there anyone left on the list you wanted to talk about? I mean, there’s a lot of guys I could talk about. You have Ethan Samson on the list. I actually thought he was the most impressive of all the defenseman. Now, it helped that Oliver Bon didn’t play. I’m sure Bon probably would have been number one on my list had he played. Samson made a lot of mistakes, but he probably was the most noticeable in terms of making good plays. He had a spinama breakout on Saturday. He had a snipe of a goal as well. He made some plays. He was was showing some skills carrying the puck. There’s something there with Ethan Samson. I’m paying closer attention to him now after watching him in these two games because he showed something to me. I feel like everything I’ve read about Ethan Samson, he’s just one of the guys where it’s like, yeah, the a little talked about Ethan Samson and then it’s, oh yeah, he looked okay actually. So maybe there’s something there. Um, what’ you think of uh Bjorn? Bjorn, he looked rusty. He looked rusty, especially in the beginning of game one. Beginning of game one was rough. The numbers don’t look good for Saturday, but I really don’t think he was bad. I think it was just he got hung out dry a couple times. Well, there was one where it was a tap in goal and a five on three. Like, I’m not gonna pin that on him. What are you gonna do? Um, he was okay. He looked rusty. He looked rusty. Hopefully, he’ll look better as camp progresses. Uh, Alexi Xen scored a short-handed goal the one night. He was impressive. Two goals in in the series, actually. Had a snipe of a goal on Saturday. It’s interesting that he was the one who replaced TuL on that top line because he played a style. They had him on the penalty kill obviously had the short-handed goal. What they’re asking TuL to become from a mentality standpoint. Feel like Jendra might be closer to embracing that than Tual is. Now I think Tual is more skilled probably, especially in terms of puck handling because Gendin has a great shot and he’s very quick. Tumal is probably a more skilled player, but Jendren might be closer to embracing that bottom sixer roll guy. It might just be more natural to him. Might be more natural to him than it is a tool. Uh, you love Spencer Gil. What did you think of uh what did you think of Gilly? He was okay. He was okay. I I don’t think he was amazing, but he made some plays. He he was maybe the the most consistently effective puck moving passer on the back end in the games. I think Ethan Samson was a better puck moving puck carrier on the back end, but Spencer Gil initiated a lot of breakouts. I wouldn’t say he was incredible, but he was fine. All right. And finally, my guy Sawyer Bolton. Is he going to be our next heavyweight champ? He doesn’t even have an NHL contract, will he? He was on an AHL only deal. I will say for now, I was impressed that he made a point to very clearly get a revenge fight in against Vaughn, uh, the the Rangers guy, cuz Vaughn beat up Gocha and then later in that period, Bolton went after him, beat him up, and from what I heard, Vaughn broke his hand in the fight. Believe somebody in our our press room mentioned that. So, I don’t think he even got a shot. So, Bolton really took a took a took a number out on him. I didn’t even see him land a punch and he broke his hand. Um, and F. Yeah, Jack Nesbbit is the only other one I just from your article I wrote you wrote in the offensive zone, Nesbbit’s work uh was a bit Shan Couttoriier adjacent and that should speak to the level of hockey IQ he showed. I think if you are if you are a pro- Nesbit person, you should probably like Couturier is a good best case scenario uh like potential upside. He is meaner than Couturier, but he was mixing it up when I was Couturier is and nobody’s going to confuse Sean Couturier for a burner. Couturier is a much better skater than Nesbbit is now. Maybe Nesbbit gets better, but Couturier is a much better skater than Nesbbit. And that’s and that says yeah. All right. Uh let’s hit overtime and then we’ll do the super chat and get out of here. All right. Uh for more of the show, keep watching at allphy.com. All right. Uh our one super chat today is once Hart signs with another team, what are the chances that the Flyers can lobby for a compensatory draft pick? He was a restricted free agent. Well, so they all all of the teams that lost the rights to these guys, they purposely did not issue qualifying offers. Now, it is an interesting point though, Doug, because it’s pretty clear that that was done at the behest of the NHL. The NHL told these teams, you got to make all these guys free agents. This is how we’re we’re approaching it so that these these guys are not tied to any NHL teams as they’re getting tried for a pretty terrible thing. So the the Flyers and the other teams probably have a case to lobby. I am skeptical the NHL will give them one, but they can try. I suppose it’s just like he wasn’t an RFA because there was no Qo. Exactly. And since there was no qualifying offer, he’s just out there and I I very much doubt the league would be like, “Oh yeah, we told you to do that, so here you go.” And draw even more attention to the whole thing. Exactly. I just think it’s those five guys are going to sign with new teams and that’s going to be that. Some of them I some of them might not get signed at all, but Carter Hart will almost certainly get signed by somebody. I heard there’s interest in at least one more, but I you know, it does seem like Carter Hart is the one with getting the most attention, which makes sense. He was he’s an NHL number one goalender. All of the other guys were bottom half of the lineup players. Carter Hart was at very least a starting caliber NHL goalie. Yeah. All right.
