Dodgers postgame: Clayton Kershaw filled with ‘gratitude’ after final start in regular season

[Music] Well, Clayton, can you just take us through what it was like going out on that mound, having this moment today, and closing out the regular season on a really high note? Yeah, it was a great day. I mean, it was uh, you know, obviously the game didn’t matter for either team, so just to be able to go out there and um, try to enjoy it as best you can and obviously pitching well helps. So, um, but honestly, I just have a lot of gratitude for the last 10 days or so, or however long it’s been, it’s been, um, it’s been super special to me. Um, from the way the teammate, my teammates have handled it, coaching staff, everybody to, um, the fans honestly has been has been just amazingly special. So, I’m just uh very grateful for it all and um now excited to um have everybody’s focus towards uh winning the last game of the season, which will be great. Were you surprised to see Freddy coming out there for the pitching change? Yeah, you know, Doc told me I had the last hitter there and uh no one was coming, so I was Hey guys, I’m kind of cashed out at this point. I wasn’t expecting to be done or uh to keep going. So, yeah, it was weird to see Freddy come out, but obviously a great gesture. um you know that’s you know playing the game um with teammates that’s what’s that’s what makes it special. So that was that was cool. How big of a challenge was it when you went onto the field and being able to enjoy the moment but yet still keep your focus to pitch well? Yeah, it was hard. I mean I think um you know I hadn’t seen my family in a minute. Nell and the older two kids uh flew in today um just to see this game and so to see them over there and um AJ and Honey were there too. So, um, just the people that I, you know, kind of grew up with here and, um, have them here was was really special. And so, that was hard, you know, that was hard to see them. And, um, hard in a good way, you know, just emotional. But, um, you know, after that, you you don’t want to embarrass yourself. You want to get people out. So, try to compete as best you can. And thankfully it worked out

During a postgame interview on SportsNet LA, Clayton Kershaw discussed emotions from making the final regular-season start of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Freddie Freeman being who did the pitching change.

  1. Kershaw started his career with 6 consecutive strikeouts, so very fitting that his final regular season start ended with 3 consecutive strikeouts 🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯

  2. For you stat nerds:
Ohtani's 146 runs is 2nd most in Dodger's history, record is 148. Career high in runs for Ohtani.
For 2025, Ohtani has new career highs in home runs (55) and walks (109)(walks he is 8th all-time for L.A.).
Ohtani also set a new career high for triples with 9.
Ohtani was only hit 3 times all season.
The numbers indicate his ability to see the ball has improved.
His OBP (.392) was high again, which was 4th in MLB, which is incredible for a leadoff.
With fewer chances for RBI's, he had like 104, still 14th in MLB. This was a reflection more of the bottom of the order struggling most of the season.
On a side note, the Dodger's franchise record for most times hit by a pitch in a season is a bean bag who was named Hughie Jennings. Way back in 1900, he was drilled 20 times in a single season. Doubtful that record will ever be broken.
The most Ohtani has ever been hit was 6 times in 2024.
A man named Dave Roberts holds the Dodger's franchise record for highest stolen base %. In 2004, Dave stole 33, was safe 97.06% of the time. So Dave is the smartest base runner in Dodger's history. It's his only franchise record, I think, as a player 😂

  3. The best pitcher I'll ever see in my life. I am eternally grateful for everything you've given us. And then some. Let's win this last game of the season and put our King on his horse and let him, his Queen and his royal family ride off into the Sunset. Words won't ever be enough for what you meant to me. Thank you King CK from the bottom of my once cold dead heart that you filled back up again and made it overflow now. "I will always love you."
