The Sacramento Kings FINALLY Close Out a Win in Milwaukee! | Locked On Kings
Oh my god. The Sacramento Kings actually closed out a victory. It’s their first win in Milwaukee since 2015. A highscoring 135 to 133 affair. Is this the blueprint for how this roster realistically can win games? We’ll discuss right here on Locked on Kings. You are Locked on Kings, your daily Sacramento Kings podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is that time. I have the privilege of being your host here. I’m a Sacramento sports anchor reporter for ABC 10 News. Matt George said that the Sacramento Kings might not win another game for weeks and then they went and and won the very next game they play. That guy’s an idiot. I guess so. And I’m happy to be one. The Kings get a big victory in Milwaukee. A nightmare start that this team finally woke up from. Oh my god, the start of this game was brutal. The Kings go down 90 before they finally score a bucket. A handful of minutes into this game, Milwaukee is up 15-2 and they are unconscious unconscious from threepoint range. The Bucks scored 47 points in the first quarter alone. But the Sacramento Kings, the Sacramento Kings scored 36 in the first quarter. Now, 36 points in a quarter, that’s nothing out of the realm of possibility for the Sacramento Kings at all. And in the the modern NBA with offenses at a premium, 36 points is more standard than it used to be. That’s for sure. 47 points in a quarter is not standard whatsoever. And we are looking at that 47 points and it was hard to get past that 47 points because of how easy things were for Giannis and the Milwaukee Bucks and how the Kings defense was basically wet paper, right? They weren’t putting up any resistance whatsoever. And we were so hyperfocused on that that we didn’t pay attention to the fact that the Kings offense after a slow start really got rolling in that first quarter. But it didn’t matter. If they couldn’t generate any sort of stops, then didn’t matter how good their offense was, how could they get back into the game. Is this the blueprint for how this Kings roster can win games consistently? Not talking about giving up 47 points in the first quarter and and fighting back, but this Kings scoring 135 points. The Kings winning 135 to 133. Now, I don’t think Sacramento can score 135 points on a nightly basis. This was the first time this season that they had scored more than 120 points. They scored 120 when they lost to the Lakers in Sacramento 125 to 120. But what I mean by is is this the blueprint? I had Chris Beerman on on yesterday’s Locked on Kings podcast. If you missed that conversation on Halloween, go and check it out because it was a great conversation with Chris. And one of the things, one of the many great things that Chris said in that podcast was, he said, “I wonder when or if the Sacramento Kings are going to get to a point where they just say, “F it. Like, let’s just try and score as many points as we possibly can, focus on our offense, and just try and win a shootout on a nightly basis.” And that’s kind of how the Sacramento Kings won this game. Tell me with this roster, the way that this roster is built featuring Lavine and D Rozan and Schroeder and and Russ and Y and and and Sabonis and Malik Monk off the bench, although Malik didn’t play in this game. He was out for personal reasons. With the way that that just those names and knowing those skill sets, what sounds more realistic for that group? Becoming a out of nowhere good defensive team that clamps down on the defensive end and picks up 94 feet and wins games on the back of their defense and their offense gets going just enough to win basketball games. or outscoring your opponent as best as possible. Focusing on the offensive end, prioritizing getting buckets, getting out in transition, just scoring as much as you possibly can and getting key defensive stops when it matters. What sounds more realistic for this team? It’s the latter option. Now, I understand that’s also an oversimplification. Of course, Matt. It’s easy just to say, “Hey, we’re just going to go and score 130 points a night. Like, we’re not facing teams that are also playing defense.” I get it. I’m not I’m aware of the oper over oversimplification of that statement. The point is though, if the Sacramento Kings prioritize their offense and getting into their offense and scoring the basketball the same way Beam Team One did, becoming one of the most effective offenses in the league and then defensively hopefully just coming up with stops and and and making moments like the Kings made in the fourth quarter of this game to secure the victory. Is that more accomplishable, more achievable for this roster? It still might not work enough, but that seems to me like a more realistic route to success for this group and the way this roster is constructed right now than Doug Christiey’s vision. Even if I like Doug Christiey’s vision and what he’s trying to implement and what Scott Perry wants to implement, it all sounds great for building the future of the Sacramento Kings, but the present doesn’t fit that future outlook. It just doesn’t. So, are you trying to build towards the future or are you trying to win basketball games right now? The answer is they’re trying to do both. But I don’t know if this roster is capable of doing both. If you’re building towards the future, you should be prioritizing playing guys like Keon Ellis, like Nick Clifford, some of the younger guys that potentially fit more of that mold and identity over the offensive pieces that that don’t. But if you’re pri prioritizing winning games and you’re throwing these veterans who have a rich history of scoring the basketball out there on a nightly basis, you should probably prioritize scoring the basketball more. Again, it’s an oversimplification. I’m completely aware of that. But I think you you get my point. Change the approach. Focus on an offensive first mindset for this group and emphasize the strengths of the roster as an offensive first group. The Kings defensively did come up with some huge plays down the stretch of this game. I thought Deonta Sabonis, we’ll talk a lot more about Domomas in a little bit. I thought Dom absolutely answered the challenge of guarding Giannis Giannis Hoten Takmpo. Even at one point, the Kings put Russ on Giannis to battle with him in the post and just make things physical and try and deny him the basketball. Domomas then stepped out on I think it was Gary Trent Jr. that he was guarding forced a turnover. Like Dom made some really really good defensive plays in the fourth quarter including when Giannis was attacking the basket like Miles Turner hit a three and cut the game to one and then I think I can’t remember the the specifics of of what the score was or or the order of the plays but when first off Kyle Kosma got going in the fourth quarter I was like okay here we go again. and Kyle Kousma cooking the Kings cuz for some reason he’s been auditioning to play for the Kings his entire career. Miles Turner hit that three to cut the lead down to one. I was like, “Oh god, here we go. The Kings are going to fight so hard and then just not be able to close this one out. The Bucks get a stop. They get out in transition. Giannis full head of steam going downhill is one of the most dangerous players in the league in that situation. And Sabonis just does the only thing he can do. cuts off the lane, puts his body in front of Giannis, and forces Giannis to either make a tough shot or make a tough decision. Giannis takes the bump, tries to kick out to the corner three. The ball, the pass ends up hitting the bottom of the rim, and it results in a turnover that essentially allowed the Kings to win that game. Like, that’s all you can ask for from Domas in that spot. Then, uh, and by the way, Giannis had 26 points, eight of 13 from the field. Like I’ll take that stat line from Giannis against the Sacramento Kings any day of the week. Giannis only taking 13 shots. Like that doesn’t say Giannis dominated the game. Eight of 13 with 26 points. That’s very efficient, but that’s that’s you can beat that like the Kings did tonight. And then on the final possession, Dennis Shruder, Russell Westbrook, Zack Lavine. The three of them work together with some excellent perimeter defense to make life as difficult as possible on the Bucks to not get um a good look for AJ Green to to tie that game up on the final possession. And then a really really smart veteran foul to send the Bucks to the line with one second remaining down three. They force themselves to miss the second free throw. Giannis looks like he’s going to have a chance potentially at a putback and Zack Lavine rips the ball out of his hands to not even give him that chance. like some just key defensive moments for the Kings down the stretch. Very similar to how Zack uh Dennis Shruder stepped up defensively uh and and uh got the big stop on Keonte George in the Kings win over the Utah Jazz on the final possession in Sacramento earlier in the season. Right. Two big defensive stops to ultimately secure wins. this roster is capable of one or two or three big defensive plays down the stretch, but expecting them to be a good defensive team for 48 minutes or close to it and picking up 94 feet, it just that doesn’t seem realistic. But big timely stops when it matters after or that are fueled by offensively driven showcase games, that’s very possible for this group. Really quickly, let’s talk about the offense for the starters. I’m going to just kind of run through their numbers really quickly and we’ll talk about some of them in more detail later on. Zack Lavine tonight, 31 points, six of 13 from three-point range. Here in here are his six games to start this season. 30 points, 31 points, 32 points, 23 points. 30 points and then 31 points tonight. He had his 31 in the third quarter. He actually didn’t score in the fourth quarter, but still four or five out of six games, Zack Lavine is scoring 30 plus points. Dude’s a walking bucket. Demard Rozan, he and Lavine really got the Kings out of that nightmare start offensively. D Rozan 29 points, 10 of 19 from the field, four rebounds, three assists. Demard Rozan had one of the best dimes I have seen in a long time. It is a pass that looks more routine than it actually is. Demar late in the second quarter, Kings are on a run trying to get this game back. Dear attacks the basket, the defense collapses. The paint is clogged. It’s muddy. Sabonis is there. Three different bucks are there. They cut off Demar’s uh lane to the rim. Dear somehow sees Zack Lavine through a sea of bodies and puts this pass on an absolute plate for him wide open for the wing three. Lavine hits it. Ties the game at 70 right before halftime. The Kings managed to get the game back to tied after that nightmare start. That dime from D Rozan was sensational. Then you have Dennis Rutder having his absolute best game as a king. This is what you were waiting for from the point guard, 24 points, eight of 13 from the field, three of five from three-point range, seven assists. Also had five rebounds. Deont Sabon is 24 points, eight of 13 from the field, 13 rebounds, six assists. The Kings 30 assists in this game to just 10 turnovers. The Kings got to the foul line 40 times in this game. Now, that’s too much for me because the Bucks also got to the line like 35 times or something like that. So, almost 80 free throws in a game is way too much. But the Kings have really been struggling getting to the foul line this season. They have not been doing a good job at it. They got to the foul line 40 times and when they got there, they hit their free throws. D Rozan nine of 10 from the line. Lavine nine of 10 from the line. Doas 8 of 10 from the line. Russ four of four from the line. Really, really good offensive numbers primarily from the Sacramento Kings starting four. But I want to talk about the start of the second half. I want to talk about Demandis Sabonis’ effort in the fourth quarter. Specifically, I want to talk about the bench guys stepping up. And I also want to talk about Doc Rivers complaining about a Russell Westbrook wrap-up foul. He wanted a flagrant. It’s super soft and it really irritated me. I’ll explain why. I am going to probably overemphasize and overexaggerate the importance of the start of the third quarter for the Sacramento Kings. Just so my point hits home, think about how this game started. The Bucks come out, the Kings are flat. The Bucks explode on this 15-2 start, dominating the Sacramento Kings, hitting hitting shot after shot. The defense doesn’t look good for Sacramento. Eerily similar to how the Bulls started the third quarter against Sacramento earlier this week after the Kings had a really good second quarter to they built a double- digit lead, gave it back over the final couple minutes, but still had a one-point lead going into halftime. The Bulls came out in the second half, dominated from start to finish. The Sacramento Kings never had a chance in that game. And we’ve been talking about this all season long to this point. The Kings struggle to close, right? It’s not just closing the game, it’s closing quarters. Well, the Kings did a really nice job closing the second quarter to get themselves back into the game. They did to the Bucks what the Bulls did to Sacramento the game before, but none of that matters if you come out of the halftime break the same way you started this game and the Bucks get momentum back. They build a big lead back and all that work you did in that first quarter or first half is now kaput. It’s gone. So I was watching the first six to eight minutes of this third quarter intently. I thought this is what was going to decide the game. And I I I think I was right. I know this game came down to the wire, but over the first eight minutes of the third quarter, Doug Christie let his starters rock. He changed his starting lineup from the start of the first quarter to the start of the third quarter, taking Dylan Cardwell out, putting Russell Westbrook in. It was the right call. We’ll talk about Dylan Cardwell in just a second. But over that first 8minute stretch of the third quarter, the Kings won 28 to6. And over that 8-minute stretch, it was some of the best ball that this team has played, period. This starting unit, they looked as cohesive as they’ve ever looked. The ball movement was sensational. the shot uh the the the looks that the Kings were generating phenomenal the assists perfect getting to the paint drawing the defensive in paint touches out to spray threes for guys like Zack Lavine who we know are automatic from three-point range Demar D Rozan getting good looks in his spots without completely disrupting the offense good two-man game in pick and roll action between Dennis Shruder and Deam Sabonis Russell Westbrook tallying up the assists even though he technically came in off the bench Sacramento looked so sharp in those first eight minutes of the third quarter. Dominated the start of the quarter, helped build their first lead of the game. Got it up to as many as I think nine points. I can’t remember if it got to double digits. It might have, but the Kings look really, really good. Carry over the momentum from the end of the first half into that third quarter. It’s their first time they’ve won a quarter, meaning they’ve outscored their opponent in a quarter in the second half this season to this point, which is crazy to say. And what I really really love is in addition to how well they were moving the basketball, the Kings brought the physicality to the Bucks. They punched first. They punched first. And Milwaukee, even though that’s a physical team, Milwaukee looked stunned. They look They’re like, “Whoa, this Kings team is punching first.” The Kings set the tone and carried that tone throughout the remainder of the game. That’s Doug Christie basketball. That’s what Doug Christie wants. So, while the picking up 94 ft and the defensive first mindset and things like that, while those aren’t necessarily day in and day out, I think realistically achievable for this roster. Being the team that establishes themselves with the physicality, plays a little bit mean and takes it to their opponents, doesn’t wait to get hit, but does the hitting themselves like that this roster can do. Of course, when you have guys like Russell Westbrook and Dennis Shruder on this team, they can do that. And even Damont Sabonis embracing the physicality. Zack Lavine, Demato Rosen embracing the physicality. That was really encouraging. But I want to talk about Damont Sabonis, man, because we’ve been super critical of Domas and I was critical of Domas in this first half because once again, I like I made a note of it. You can go and see the tweet. Dom just has not looked comfortable with the ball in his hands. He hasn’t. He has not looked like he’s been able to secure the ball. I don’t know if we can blame the hamstring for that. I also know the defenses are really blitzing when he gets the ball, especially when he’s rolling to the basket. But Dom is like he’s had multiple rebounds ripped out of his hands. He’s rolled to the basket and pick and rolls, which is normally his game. And as soon as he receives the pass, he’s just not able to secure the basketball. Just gets a little wild with it. Did have three turnovers in this game, but did a good job from really the point that I made that note. Noticed him turning the basketball over. did a good job of taking care of the basketball for the rest of the game. It didn’t stand out to me. Again, 24 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, five fouls for Domos. And the reason I’m pointing out the five fouls is because he had five fouls late in this game and did not back down on the physicality. Made those big defensive stops against Giannis and against the Bucks down the stretch with five fouls. Did what he had to do. Defended with his chest, with his arms up, didn’t reach, didn’t do anything egregious. just made the right play and forced the Bucks to either make a big shot or make a tough pass and it worked out in the King’s favor. I mean, it is not easy to guard Giannis, period. There are very few teams in this league that can say we have a guy that we’re confident guarding Giannis Antubo. The Kings don’t have any of them. And as Chris Beerman noted on yesterday’s podcast because we were talking about this matchup, the Kings have tried having Sabonis guard Giannis before and Giannis looked at him like food. And Domas, I’m not going to call it a perfect job. Dom did about as well as anyone could expect guarding Giannis in this game. Brought the physicality to Giannis. Didn’t back down. And then on the other end of the floor, Giannis wasn’t guarding Domas very much, but Domas was bringing the physicality on to to whoever was guarding him on the offensive end. Just a really solid game. A really good fourth quarter in particular from Sabonis who is making the right decisions time and time and time and time again. His twoman game with uh Dennis Shruder is getting a lot sharper. You can see the two of them getting a lot more comfortable together. That’s something that I’m encouraged by, something that I hope and can uh can continue throughout the the remainder of this season, of course, as those two get more and more comfortable together. And the biggest thing that I can say about this game from Domomas, he didn’t have a triple double. Wasn’t one of his massive numbers performances that we’ve seen him put up in in a Sacramento Kings uniform before. But everything that Domos did right, he played within himself. And what I mean by that is it wasn’t like a oh my god, Domos scoring 36 points like you better win games when he does something like that because he’s not going to be able to do that very often. Sometimes guys have games where it just it’s not who they normally are. Keegan Murray when he dropped 40 whatever it was 47 49 I don’t even remember went absolutely crazy from three-point range. We know Keegan’s capable of knocking down threes but Keegan’s not a guy that is going to score 40 plus points very often. So that was a game where I was like you better win that game because look at what Keon did or Keegan did. Everything that Sabonis did in this game was playing within himself. It’s stuff that he can do on a nightly basis. I was just really really encouraged by that second half in particular from Demand Sabonis. Russell Westbrook stepping up with the absence of Malik Monk captaining that second unit. Played a lot with the starters as well, but Russ 12 points. Not his most efficient shooting game, but still 12 points, 10 assists for Russ. Five rebounds, two steals. Russ did a really good job of holding down the minutes when either Deamar or Zack or both at times were out of the game. Russ did a really good job getting his teammates involved, especially there was a stretch where Russ and Drew Eubanks just kept finding each other. Well, Russ kept finding Drew and Drew was converting at the rim. Drew Eubanks 10 points, five of six from the field in 11 minutes. I’ll take that every day of the week. And a lot of those buckets came in that third quarter push that the Sacramento Kings had. Really, really encouraging game from Drew Eubanks, too. Nice to see him make a positive offensive impact in this game when the Kings needed it. I want to talk about Dylan Cardwell and Maxim Reno really quick. Both of them got opportunity to play early in this game. Dylan Cardwell started at the five with Sabonis moving to the four. A lot of people have wanted to see what it looks like for Sabonis to start at the four. Max was the first center off the bench for the Kings. Dylan Cardwell played five minutes. Maxim Reno played four minutes. It was a disaster. That horrendous start. Now, it’s completely completely unfair and untrue to say it’s because of Dylan Cardwell and Maxim Reno that the Kings got off to that bad of a start. Nobody was playing well to start this game, but Doug experimented with an undrafted rookie at center and then bringing in his second round pick rookie to back him up, giving them opportunities. It could not have gone worse for the Kings during that stretch. So, the two of them don’t play for the rest of the game. Why do I bring this up? Because while the Kings are making these big pushes, when they’re on that stretch in the third quarter where they are just playing the best offense that they’ve played all season, shots are falling, the ball is moving, everything looks crisp, everything looks sharp, everything looks great. The camera pans to the Kings bench like two or three different times. And who is front and center on that bench with the biggest smiles on their faces, jumping up and down, arms wrapped around each other, celebrating every play and every moment, front and center. Maximo and Dylan Cardwell. I don’t know like that. It sounds so silly. It sounds so trivial. I loved seeing that because here are two guys that had an opportunity. It did not go well. Got yanked. never got back into the game and they knew they weren’t going back in the game and yet they were up and active and cheering and being the energy on the bench that this Kings team needed. I respect both of them so much for that. You got your shot. It didn’t go well. How can I still impact this game? I can communicate. I can cheer. I can provide energy for my guys on the bench. My vets are balling out right now. I’m going to support them any way I can and I’m also going to enjoy it like the fans are enjoying it at home. I have so a tremendous amount of respect for both of those guys for handling things that well. Like that’s what a pro does. So I wanted to make sure I give them love and a shout out for that. There was a moment in this game, I think it was in the second quarter, Jiannis Tenskumpo, full head of steam attacking the basket and he’s in one of those moments where really all you can do is put a body in front of him and fall and Russell Westbrook being the veteran that he is. Picture perfect wrap-up grabs Giannis around the arms, pins his arms to his body. No contact anywhere near the head. Does not pull him to the ground. wraps him up, holds him firm. You are not getting a shot off. I’m sending you to the line cuz you’re going to get a layup or a dunk if I don’t. You’re going to go have to earn it the hard way. And there is no chance in hell that you’re going to get this shot off to have a potential three-point play. Nuh-uh. Not happening. A veteran textbook wrapup from Russell Westbrook. Giannis, of course, takes, I guess, issue with it. some Jon back and forth. It’s Russell Westbrook being Russ. The NBA wastes all of our time taking a look at it for a flagrant foul potentially. Thank god it took them way longer than they need to, but thank God they watch it and go, “Yeah, there was it was a clean wrap-up. There’s no dirty contact or anything like that. It’s it’s not a flagrant. Giannis goes to the line for two free throws.” Camera pans to Doc Rivers who’s What? What do you mean? What? How is that not a flagrant? He’s attacking my guy. And you have stupid accounts on Twitter going, “Russell Westbrook just tackled Giannis.” All this ridiculousness. Doc Rivers belonged to the era of NBA players that have called the NBA soft for years. Back in my day, back in my day, if I were to attack the rim like that, Ben Wallace would have punched me in the throat and ripped my head off and set my arms to the bench and my knees up to the upper level. I would have been massacred going to the paint. Oh, in the NBA today, man, Steph Curry can dance his way in the lane. If he gets touched, oh, it’s a foul call. And he gets sent to the foul line. Man, the NBA is so soft today. How many players from Doc Rivers generation have we heard say things like that? And yet Doc is gonna cry for a flagrant foul when Russell Westbrook wraps up Giannis in the most textbook safe clean way possible. Russ didn’t do anything to put Giannis at risk. Anything. If anything, when things got taken to another level, it’s when Giannis kind of started flailing, doing this get off me macho man attitude and Russ kept holding on to him like, “No, I’m not getting off you. You’re not getting this shot off. I’m tying you up. I’m doing my job. I don’t know, man. Come on, Doc. I know you’re just being a coach, standing up for a guy or whatever, but your generation can’t be calling people soft for foul calls and then you’re begging for a flagrant after a clean wrap-up. I just It’s my podcast, so I can get on that soap box and talk about that if I want to. All right. Now, I want to hear from you. You’ve heard enough of me. I want to hear from you. Your thoughts on this game. Has it reignited your flame for this team? Hey, maybe maybe we can go two and two on this road trip. Maybe they can go up and win in Denver. Are you feeling better? Kings are two and four. The record’s not great, but it’s it’s a win. What do you think about this blueprint for winning games and offensive focus? Your thoughts on how Sabon has played, all these starters played, Russ, anything. Let me know. Matt George Sack on Twitter. Email me [email protected] or leave your thoughts in the YouTube comment section down below. Look forward to having you join me on the next episode of Locked on Kings. Of course, we will have a Kings postgame episode after Kings and Nuggets on uh Monday. Also, got a little bit of news. The Kings will have a five-game home stand after the Nuggets game on Wednesday. The final game of that home stand on November 12th, I believe. The Kings play the Hawks. Well, the Hawks will be without Trey Young in that game. He’s out for the next four weeks with an injury, apparently. I don’t know if that makes you feel better or worse based off of how the Kings fare against teams when their star is out, but game got a lot more getable if Trey Young’s not playing. So, just an important note to keep an eye on for that game, too. But appreciate your support. Can’t wait to have you join me on the next episode of Locked On Kings. Until then, my name is Matt George. You’ve been listening to the Locked On podcast, part of the Lockdown Onet.
Matt George reacts to the Sacramento Kings’ bounce back victory after a horrible start against the Milwaukee Bucks. Is this the blueprint for realistic success for this roster?

I’ll be damned! Thank the lord they WON🟣🟣🟣
Beautiful game
Why not a scream of joy to start this!
Let’s go!!!
Russell Westbrook player of the game did all the Lil things to help 🥇 🎉🐐🐐
Best game! All around team effort!
Dennis 🎉
Good win I'm happy but still need to make some moves
Warriors lost to Indy … time to catch those Dubs
I love Dennis and always said. Dennis is the real leader. DOUGH AND DENNIS.
Without Monk and without Russel in the starting 5.
Based on that podcast from yesterday, it sounded like the Kings were no better than a high school team.
Hopefully they can do this again. These next four games are against west juggernauts
I can't believe it! Somebody pinch me so I know I'm not dreaming. I credit you, Matt. Seriously, brilliant reverse juju.
We still need to trade some old men on this roster we need help
Yay. I loved the ball movement & adjustments on defense. I just worry about which 5 we are going to start as we were already down by 12 when Russ came off the bench.
🔦🟣
They looked like a completely different team. Doug needs to keep that starting line up until Murray gets back. I liked the size but also, I still need them to do a better job rotating & not give up so many open 3s
thankful we got the win.
Hey I felt like you Mat, going into this game and after the first quarter I just assumed it was over but being a fan I continued to watch. I am glad I did. But now no excuses you showed everyone what can be done.
Brooo, we caaaannn beat Denver tho!! That’s how you win a fight
I agree Sabonis was the key to how the team played in the second half. I think we need to get some wins before worrying about giving young players floor time. We need wins to get our team and fans some hope. There will be time for team development but not in a close game. Hope this is the start of a solid King rotation!!
Gamez lyke THIZ make me proud LIGHT THA BEAM
I like that clean wrap. Good job by Russ, and our young guys needs to learn that. 🤗
They sold the game. Let’s see how next game goes.
Never knew Giannis was a Fanduel agent. Throwing the 🏀 to the rim to sell the game MFer
