CUTTER’S SNIPING & CARLSSON’S DOMINANCE | Anaheim Ducks Updates
The Anaheim Ducks are another team that has gone from the rebuilding stage to maybe contending for a wildcard spot this season. On today’s show, we’re going to break down the elite performances from players like Cutter Goceier and Leo Carlson and a whole lot more of the Anaheim Ducks. [Music] You are Locked On NHL Prospects, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Hello and welcome back to Locked On NHL Prospects, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Your team every day. On this show, we break down everything prospects related for you 5 days a week, Monday through Friday. I’m your host, Sebastian Hy, the USA scout at Elite Prospects. And on today’s episode, we’ll be talking about the Anaheim Ducks, who are off to a pretty solid start to the season here and just came off a really nice shootout victory over the defending Stanley Cup champions uh in Florida. And uh I thought that the young players played a really fantastic game in this one, especially the goal scorers Leo Carlson and Cutter Goier who are really really taking a step here this season. And uh this is an exciting young team. They play with speed. They play with some physicality. And even though they showed their youth in letting the Panthers claw their way back in the third period um losing a two nothing lead uh to sending the game into into overtime and the shootout, they were able to win it in the shootout and Lucas Doyle played a very big role in that as well. So, lots of different pieces coming up big for the Ducks here early in the season as they are uh hanging on to a a spot in the middle of the pack in the Pacific Division. They’re 53 and one here so far this season uh and have 11 points in nine games. So, they’re over 500, which is big news for this organization. And I hope to see them staying in this mix because when the Ducks are good, as they have been here recently, they play such an exciting brand of hockey. So that’s the outlook here for today’s show. First, we’ll talk about Leo Carlson and Cutter Goceier. Then we’ll move on to chatting about Mason McTavish and Becket Senica. And finally, we’ll wrap it up by talking about the four big young defenseman on the team in Jackson Lome, Pavl Mintikov, Olan Zelwagger, and Ian Moore to wrap up the show. But before we dive into it, today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. download the FanDuel app right now by visiting FanDuel.com and win 300 bucks in bonus bets if you win your first $5 bet. So, let’s kick things off because both Cutter Goier and Leo Carlson have been so much fun to watch here in the early going of the season. the sniper and the playmaker. And uh both these guys are really playing a physical middle-driven style of game. And uh I don’t think you can name me an NHLer right now who has more fun shooting the puck than Cutter Goce does right now. He is second in the league in shot attempts behind only Nathan McKinnon. And this kid is uh really coming into his own this campaign. He’s got six goals already through nine games alongside a pair of assists for eight points so far. I don’t think that that 55 goal pace will be sustainable over the course of a season, but uh certainly a guy I think that’s going to be scoring goal after goal here this year uh for the Ducks and and be one of their primary triggermen. He is uh their go-to shooter on the power play at this stage. It’s where he scored his goal at five on three off an absolutely beautiful one-time uh which beat Teras off just over the pad. Uh just a really heavy low shot that was very difficult to save. And uh yeah, Goautier played a great game there against the Florida Panthers in that uh gutsy 32 win. Uh scored the second goal there uh for the Ducks. And this is a player that’s grown on me so much since being a draft eligible. I had some question marks when he first came in through the draft. I wasn’t nearly as high on him as others were. I mean, obviously he went fifth overall. Had a lot of big fans out there. Uh for me, he was more of like a 20 to 25 range guy in the draft that I thought was solid enough, but perhaps not spectacular enough to really push his way up to contending for topline minutes. But, uh, he’s been proving me wrong time and time again. in that trait with Philadelphia Flyers is just looking like a bigger steel uh with every single passing day. Uh, I mean, Jamie Ddale has had a a tough going so far in his NHL career and Cutter Goier is off to a flying start. Really finding an edge here uh playing on the wing inside the top six and uh finding some real nice chemistry with guys like Leo Carlson and Mason McTavish depending on where he plays in the lineup and uh really showing those flashes of connectivity uh both at even strength and the power play. So Ducks fans, what are your impressions of Goce? What are your expectations for him here this season? And uh what what number of goals do you think he’ll be able to score this campaign because uh he’s been off to just such a hot start. But let’s move on to talk about uh the franchise cornerstone here among the forwards and that has got to be Leo Carlson. the big playmaking power forward who stands at 6’3″ 203 lbs is already among the smartest U25 players in the National Hockey League and he’s only 20 years of age. He will be turning 21 here in December. But a guy that’s just made such a fantastic debut to his NHL career going from half a point a game in his rookie season to scoring 20 goals and 45 points last campaign. And at this point this season, he leads the Anaheim Ducks as their assistant captain in just his third year with three goals and nine points through eight regular season games. And uh this is a player that I just love watching on the ice. The intelligence with which he plays. We saw it on his goal in this game. Uh that I think this is a player that’s going to earn himself a really big contract extension. think uh 8910 million plus. I think he will have earned that type of salary. Uh with the Ducks here moving forward, I hope they lock him up to an eight-year contract with the rising cap. You’re going to want to save some pennies here and there, especially down the line when you want to enter your competitive window. And Carlson’s going to be such an important piece. And uh just to learn from a team like the Montreal Canadiens who have established an entire internal salary cap structure based on that Nick Suzuki contract, I think the the Ducks could do a similar thing with Leo Carlson. And uh going back to that goal he scored against the Florida Panthers off the rush. Really intelligent rush patterns that this player has in terms of attacking with with pace up the wing. Uh really activating up the boards from the defensive zone. Uh entering the offensive zone as well. and then cutting towards the middle of the ice while hitting the brakes, slowing down, little uh um drop pass uh to his linemate and then just off puck uh driving the back post hard, swiveing to open up his body and make his uh shot a threat. And uh luckily for him and the Ducks, both uh Panthers defenseman decided to go uh towards the other player, leaving Carlson wide open as a one-time threat. And uh the Neil Terasov had no chance on that cross crease transition because uh Carlson’s one-time was just heavy and precise and uh yeah, left no uh chance for the net minder there. And it’s so easy to see why Carlson’s been earning so much trust here this season already. two-point night here uh in a 3-2 victory uh playing 20 plus minutes a night in both of the last two games and just very clearly a topline piece already here in Anaheim and uh certainly certainly vindicating the Anaheim Ducks for making that selection at second overall that maybe prompted a couple eyebrow raises for passing on the likes of Adam Fantelli and Matt Ve Mitchkov in that 2023 draft. But, uh, Leo Carlson’s looking like potentially the best of the bunch behind Conor Bard here so far in his young career. And, uh, definitely a player worth that draft selection. And especially playing against a team like the Florida Panthers who were missing Sasha Bararkov in this game. He has so many stylistic similarities to Bararkov, the back-to-back captain of the Stanley Cup champions uh in terms of the way he approaches the ice, the intelligence, the scanning habits, the ability to stay within space, support his linemates both offensively and defensively, stay so active on both sides of the puck. Leo Carlson’s got it all with a big frame, the power to drive the middle of the ice, the skill to make teams pay when they give him an inch of space. There’s nothing he cannot do. So, a player I have an immense amount of respect for and Ducks fans, you’ve got to be excited about the future built around this guy. And what are your expectations for him this season? Do you think he’ll be able to uh stay as a point per game producer here this campaign? I’d love to hear your thoughts down below if you are watching on YouTube. But that wraps up this second segment here for us today. In the next one, we’ll be breaking down the games of Mason McTavish and Becket Senica who’ve been combining with for some really nice chemistry here early on in the season. Uh two3 overall draft picks. But before we do that, a quick message from our sponsors here at Locked Dawn NHL Prospects. All right, let’s keep this show rolling, breaking down the Anaheim Ducks and their hot start to the season, led by Young Guns up and down the lineup. And let’s uh kick things off here with the player who uh scored the shootout winning goal in this game against the Florida Panthers. Really uh making his best Yani Ketsaw impression in terms of extremely slow shootout attempt. And that’s Mason McTavish who handled the puck really rapidly and slaughtered it into the five hole of the Neil Terasov the moment it opened up when he was just inches away from the blue paint. And this is a player that has just been thriving since signing his extension there at $7 million a season, which did go quite late into the process, but I think that the Ducks got him to a fantastic extension there for six seasons at 7 mil a year. Uh the 6’1 218 pound power forward is just so talented and versatile. He scored his first 22 goal or 20 goal campaign last season with 22 goals and 52 points in 76 games and this year is already up to a goal and seven points in nine appearances. Playing massive minutes night in night out. who played over 20 in this game against the Panthers and really showing his ability at playing down the middle lane at even strength and on the power play, winning his battles, gaining inside position, and just bullying guys at the net front. McTavish is such a an aggressive and and violent player at times. And he pairs that with a heavy shot, deaf hands, and a headup approach where he’s really able to elevate the players he plays with and see them coming. the scanning habits, the anticipation are really big areas of strength for this guy. And I think that that combination of toolkit with the physicality, the intelligence, the puck skills to make teams hurt, I think is such a lethal combination. And uh definitely another guy that I think is is showing uh the Ducks in the NHL as a whole why they took that early swing on him at third overall and a guy that definitely in my eyes is a core piece of this top six moving forward and a a real solidifying guy for the Ducks down the middle. I mean, Leo Carlson’s the number one piece here down the middle for the long term, but Mason McTavich is a fantastic second line center for years to come. And he’s only 22 years old. He’s still such a young player as a January 30th 03 birthday. And a guy that I would love to have on my team to build around. I mean, I think he’d be a fantastic two seat on the Montreal Canadians as my favorite team, but it is not to be. It is the Anaheim Ducks who have the luxury of employing Mason McTavish, a guy that is uh certainly I mean I think every single team in the National Hockey League wants a player like this in their lineup and uh uh the Ducks have him. So definitely lucky in that uh in that regard and player who’s been stepping up increasingly in big moments. uh really a clutch producer as well and uh just difficult to play against and you want to be hard to play against, especially as you’re preparing to make the leap from rebuilding squad to uh competing contender uh to maybe scratch buys or wildcard playoff slot here this season. And we move on to another hard to play against third overall pick who raised some eyebrows, especially his own when his name was called on draft day, and that’s Becket Senica, the 2024 third overall selection uh from the Ashawa Generals in the OHL, who was expected to be sent back to the Ontario Hockey League this season by many, myself included perhaps as well. But no, no, no. He’s got his spot not just in the lineup, but as a top six stalwart. He’s been averaging 17 18 minutes a night here so far this campaign is already up to five points in nine games including three goals and uh certainly had a very hot start with four points in his first three games of the season and cooled off a little bit after that in terms of production but the overall impact has just sustained in terms of being very effective in my eyes. He’s got the frame. Uh he’s definitely filled it out as well. probably stronger on his feet than he was in his draft year as a 6’4 194 lb right shot winger. He’s got all the tools in the book. Uh he’s got the the the elite level hands, the great playmaking vision, the uh heavy shot as well that can make teams pay. Really quick thinker, especially with the puck on a stick in the offensive zone, and just boundless creativity and uh and and and experimentality as a guy with the puck. And uh in terms of guys with high ceilings that could definitely still take multiple steps upwards in raising that headroom in the coming years within the Ducks organization, I think Beckett Senica is at the top of that list. The sky is the limit with where he can end up being because he’s got the power tools. He’s got the uh the strength, the aggression as a physical middle driven player on top of all the skills that make him so flashy and just a highlight reel wet regular. There’s so much to love with this guy and uh I don’t think that too many Ducks fans are are really pained by the fact that that they passed on Ivon Deitov even if he may be the better player long term here. Becket Synica is such a unique player who brings power forward elements together with a handling skill that matches Ivon Deidovs in Montreal and so much creativity. There’s just so much upside here with Beckett Senica and he’s a player I always love watching every time I put on a Ducks game and he certainly stood out to me as well in this game against the Florida Panthers that I watched. Even though he didn’t find the score sheet, uh he made an impact in all three zones. I liked how active he kept his stick in the defensive zone, kept his feet moving, was working hard on both sides of the puck. Offensively, he was supporting his linemates off puck, getting into positions with a stick open uh to to be an outlet option when his linemates were pressured by uh by Florida’s like heavy and intense defenseman and and overall I think he’s he’s making a really smooth start to his National Hockey League career. But I’ll pass the question on to you Anaheim Ducks fans. What h what were your expectations for Becca Senica when he was drafted and how have those changed in the couple years since then now that you’re actually watching him play with the big leagues in the big leagues here with your team and he’s now nine games into his NHL career and there seems to be basically no discussion about sending him back to the Ontario Hockey League and how do you feel about that in terms of the impression he’s made here early on for your team? I’d love to hear your thoughts down below if you’re watching on YouTube. But that wraps things up here for the second segment in the final one. We’ll wrap things up with four big young defenseman in the lineup and are making some significant impacts here early in the season, including Jackson Lome, who of course is coming off of that massive 8-year extension that he penned just a couple weeks ago. But uh before we do that, we got a quick message here from our sponsor, Locked On NHL Prospects. Let’s be honest, most of us can’t even name all of our financial accounts, let alone what they’re worth. Between 401ks, savings, and investments, it’s so easy to lose track. All right, let’s wrap up this show focusing on the Anaheim Ducks and their ever improving rebuilding squad. And we’ll focus on the Blue Line here to finish up the show. And you got to kick things off with Jackson Lome, uh the big minute muncher from the Blue Line, who has just been so impressive with his blend of mobility, intelligence, and two-way impact since making his entry into the National Hockey League. guy that was perpetually underrated through his NCAA career, but that is no longer the case. Signing his big eight-year extension, paying him $9 million a year, bring all the way bring him all the way through to his age 33 season. Uh that’s this is his big NHL contract. He won’t be getting the massive extension likely after that at that point in his career. and he’s cashing in. And I can totally see why the Anaheim Ducks wanted to get that done early because he just brings so much to the table. That mobility is just fantastic. His ability to run the top power play, you know, be the quarterback alongside highskll players like Leo Carlson and Carter Goceier and the rest of the pack there is such an impressive feature as well. and he’s already an assistant captain here in just his third NHL campaign after putting up a tremendous 43 points in 75 games last season. He’s up to three assists here on the year already. And he’s been playing huge minutes here for the Anaheim Ducks. In this game against the Florida Panthers, he played 29 minutes. Sure, that game went to overtime, but uh still 29 minutes is wild. The game before that ended in regulation and he played 2730 before that 24. This guy is just perpetually playing over 23 minutes a night which is wild in terms of deployment. And uh overall he really does find himself at the towards the very top of uh of NHL ice time. He currently sits in fourth in time on ice a game ahead of guys like Kale Mar and Mirro Hiskin. He’s averaging 2537 a game. The only players that have played more than him a night are Zack Winsky, Quinn Hughes, and at the tippity top of the Philadelphia Flyers, Travis Sanheim. So, uh, Lome definitely among the biggest minute munchers leaguewide. And you have to respect his defensive impact night in night out. He’s just such a stud on both sides of the puck. That skating ability is a massive advantage in all three zones. allows him to keep a really tight neutral zone gap. Is really suffocating as a rush defender and uh is really able to to close that gap in the blink of an eye with the with the combination of his footwork and really strong defensive stick work. He’s not the most physical defenseman in the league, but he doesn’t have to be with the way he takes time and space away perpetually from uh from opposing forwards. And uh the breakout skill is fantastic in in really getting the puck out of the defense defensive zone with control, with pace to set up offensive opportunities. He’d have a lot more points if you counted third assists. He’s so often at the core of what happens on the ice here for the Anaheim Ducks and certainly I believe a cornerstone for this team moving forward. But we move on to talking about a guy that hasn’t gotten as many minutes here this season and that’s Pavle Mintyov. Uh the big left shot defenseman who stands at 6’1 201 pounds. Um who also is a really nice skater to watch. uh the puck moving ability, the playmaking activations. There’s so much skill in this kid’s toolkit and uh he’s been playing about like 16 minutes a night uh on the second/3 pairing there for the Anaheim Ducks here so far this season. Log two assists through that span. And overall, I think he’s just quietly progressing as a really reliable force here for the Anaheim Ducks. I think he definitely has a lot more room to grow as an offensive creator than he’s shown so far in his young career, but he doesn’t need to be the like 50point guy that maybe was projected in his draft year to have a really big impact. He’s involved defensively. He has an active stick. He uses his mobility to take time and space away from opponents and uses that that combination of quick processing and anticipation to just spark really quick breakouts as well. He’s so comfortable as a puck carrier and a passer off the off the rush and in the offensive zone. I’m so excited to see that playmaking ability and activation game translate to some more production in the coming seasons. But what’s your impression been Anaheim Ducks fans of Pavl Mintukov so far through his career? I mean, you’ve watched him a good amount at this stage. He’s entering his third year with the team now. as his production has kind of just uh petered off since his rookie campaign where he got 28 in 63 games. Had 19 and 68 last season. He has 2 and nine so far this campaign. But uh what have you have had to say about his overall impact on the ice? I would love to hear your thoughts down below. But we move on to Olan Zelwagger. perhaps the best skater among the entire defensive core here in Anaheim, which is certainly saying something competing with the likes of Jackson Lome and Pavl Mentikov. But uh Zawaker is such a joy to watch from the blue line. He had some nice sequences walking the offensive blue line on the power play in that game I tuned in for against the Florida Panthers. and he only has one assist so far this campaign, but he’s playing bigger minutes than Mintikov to start the year, averaging around 19 to 20 minutes a night. And uh really a reliable force there on the second pairing for this team. And that skating ability, it’s almost more exaggerated with Zelwagger than it is with uh with um Jackson Lome in terms of it being the foundation that just makes every aspect of his game tick. His ability to take time and space away from opponents as an undersized 5- foot10 defenseman flows through his feet. That playmaking game also flows through his fluidity at walking the point and activating up the offensive zone and making a little fake here or shimmy there to shake off an opponent and uh and really like create some time and space to look for a playmaking option. But what I think he’s really improved at here in the past year or two of NHL experience is uh his ability to to be a connective player rather than just an offensive dynamo, which he certainly was in the WHL throughout his career there. He’s just such an adaptive piece that uh makes uh makes things work and and and creates advantages wherever he plays. He’s a plus six so far this campaign through nine games, which I think is also impressive on a team like the Anaheim Ducks. And uh overall he’s been an underrated part of their success here so far this season. He also only just turned 22 years of age in early September. Has so much runway as a mobile puck moving defenseman with offensive upside and uh a player that just gets me to the edge of my seat every time I tune in with the way he moves, the way he thinks, the pace of play he brings to the ice and the versatility he has on on both ends of the ring. But to wrap up the show here, I did want to give a nice little shout out here to Ian Moore uh who has gotten into three NHL games here so far this season playing on the third pairing in that game. I tuned in uh for against the Florida Panthers. Played uh just about 12 minutes in that game, but had some really nice defensive involvements and uh and and and overall I think was was nicely involved in that game when he was on the ice. He hasn’t logged a point here so far this season. had one assist in three appearances last year, zero points in three games here so far this campaign as a 6’3 194 lb right shot defenseman. But for him, it’s that it’s that comp it’s the combination of confidence on puck, making uh good decisions quickly in possession, not holding on to the puck for too long, and overall just being really involved, I think, on both ends of the ice, using his size and his range to take time and space away from the opposition. He’s a guy that I’ve really been enjoying watching here as of late and I scouted him in the off season as we were doing our um uh prospect pool rankings at Elite Prospects. But uh my colleague Daniel G is the one who wrote his report as he finished number four in our prospect rankings behind only Becket Senica, Roger McQueen, and Steon Soulberg. But ahead of guys like Terren Smith and Tyson Hines, like this kid is going to be a a a stalwart as a big right shot blue line blueliner here in an organization that mostly has has left shots. He certainly sets himself apart with both that frame and that shot. And uh and Daniel G wrote in in this uh ranking, Ian Moore’s metamorphosis from an offensive puck rusher to a mobile shutdown defender is one of the best development stories to come out of the prep circuit. Years later, Moore finally signed his entry- level contract after captaining captaining Harvard University for the past two years, stepping into the AHL for a small nine-game sample. He was excellent, flashing sense, disruption, and transitional value. He’s a dogged place topper already, a smooth four-way mover who operates with a deep mental map. He’s disruptive, stuff secondary threats, pushing an a aggressive brand of defending, and under pressure. He’s such a battler. While Moore is already showing positive results both in his AHL and NHL debuts, he’s also older for a prospect. He’s closer to a finished product than the other defensive quantities in the Ducks prospect pool. Opportunities will be limited and he must continue to perform. Still, a 6’3 right defender with more profile is so hard to ignore. And we’ve seen that on the ice here so far this campaign. Even in limited minutes, he’s very visible on the ice. He takes time and space away. very aggressive and comfortable at defending big, speedy, aggressive forwards as he was against the Panthers when he was facing guys like Sam Bennett. I thought he did a great job at protecting the middle lane, pushing them towards the boards, and really protecting the net there for Lucas Dot. And overall, this is an exciting blue line here for the the Anaheim Ducks. So much youth on this side, and overall, a team that is becoming more exciting and more fun to watch with every passing season. But that wraps things up here for us today. And I’d love to hear your thoughts of the show down below in the comments if you’re watching on YouTube. And if you’re listening on your favorite podcasting platform, please do make sure to make us your first listen of the day. It’s always so greatly appreciated. And for your second listen, going to head on over to Lockdown Fantasy Hockey where Flip and Steel break down everything you need to know to build yourself a competitive and sustainable fantasy roster. But that is it here for us today. I’m your host, Sebastian Hy, the USA scout at Elite Prospects, and I hope to catch you tuning in again very, very soon.

Carlsson can be an elite playmaker scoring 100 points a year, Gauthier can be an excellent scorer scoring 50 goals a season and sennecke is one if the best rookies this season with an excellent future ahead. He has unlimited potential like Michael Misa with San Jose.
Leo our Lord and Savior
Season Predictions:
Cutter scores 40 goals this season.
Leo tallies 79 points.
McTavish gets 65 points.
Ian Moore becomes our best defensive defenseman. (he might be already)
Dostal finishes top 3 in Vezina voting.
One young player on the roster who I’m concerned about is Mintyukov. He has been inconsistent with his skating output, puck retrievals & zone exits, turnovers, and decision making lapses. I think Cronin stalled his development a bit. Hopefully he gets back on track with the new coaching staff this season.
Beckett has consistently shown flashes offensive creativity, speed, tenacity at the net front, and puck skill. That being said, he struggles mightily along the boards (gets knocked over with ease) and is very turnover prone. While he’s gotten heavier, he still has a lot of strength to build. He seems aggressive at times and tentative at others. He has this annoying habit, when nearing a puck (being passed) or a puck carrier, to stop skating and reach for it/them. Also when entering the offensive zone he feathers his passes too softly and often the opposition will pick it off. I’m not concerned with him long term, but right now I think he’s more of a liability in the top six than an asset. Hopefully he learns quickly.
Leo still has a lot of room for growth both offensively and defensively. I think he has the potential to be the best player in franchise history.
Quenville has to undo the two years of what Cronin did to this team.
Great show. I wish he was a Ducks fan…
Let’s go boys!!!
