GAMECHANGER: Astros Target Shane Baz in Aggressive PUSH For Rotation Upgrade—Are Trade Talks REAL?
As the winter meetings heat up, the Astros are hunting, starting pitching, and a new name is climbing the boards. Shane Bos, electric stuff, front line upside. And suddenly, Houston looks great to make a move right now. So, strap in. This off season just got interesting. Yel Diaz, this is Locked On Astros. So go ahead and join the community and go and have a conversation through the Discord, the subtext. There’s just so many different opportunities throughout that are available to you that are not available uh just throughout the podcast. But today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Um if you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit fanuel.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. And um we’re going to be talking in this episode, the winter meetings have started, officially started. And that means that you got a lot of rumors. You got all the agents, all the reporters, all the GMs, all the manager, all all in one place. Some players are out there. And so, you know, there’s going to be a lot of different things circulating. And so, right now, Shane Bos is going to be one of the biggest names that you’re going to be hearing that’s linked to the Houston Astros. Is he likely gonna be traded to Houston? Who knows? But we think that this is the type of player that the Astros are be targeting. Dana Brown and Joe Body give us the updates on injuries, playing time, and uh also um a medical update and the return to play update as well. We’ll talk about that a little bit later. And Jeff Kent made it to the Hall of Fame. Who did not make to to the Hall of Fame? We’ll go and talk about this on tonight’s Locked on Astros podcast. Yeah, that’s right. You know, and with the winter meetings, it’s all about speculation, Eric. It’s all about who they are talking to and apparently the Astros have phoned in about a lot of options and Shane Bos being one of them. I know that the reports say it’s funny like Rome reported it then he’s like but a deal isn’t close and it’s unlikely. But what you want to do is you want to look at what he did. You know, 166.1 innings, a 10-12 record, a 4.87 RA, and 176 strikeouts. That’s definitely a serviceable starter. Now, this is also a local kid, Eric. He’s from Houston. He went to Concordia Lutheran up in the Tombball area. So, he is a Houston kid. So, he’d be bringing we’d be bringing back home um one of Houston’s own. So, that’s kind of a cool storyline. Um, you know, we do know that their priority is pitching. A and Eric, if they’re looking to go via trade, then this is the type of pitcher that maybe a Jake Meyers can bring you back. I I know you and I have discussed other pitchers other than Cole Reagan’s with the Royals, like um like like Bubick, like um who is the other one that we talked about? Uh the third pitcher and his name is Kobe Rasmus. Um who? No, not Did you say Colobby Rasmus from the N? Wow. You had a long day, sir. No. Who? Yes, I have. I’ve been up since 4:30. So, yes, I’m tired. Who was that third pitcher we talked about from the from the Royals? And his name Oh, Seth Luggo. Um, sorry. Um, yeah. So, you know, the Lugos, the Bubixs, um maybe the Boss. I mean, you know, he might be someone that the Astros go after. And again, not that there’s a lot of, you know, fire there or action there, but where there’s smoke, there may be fire and this may be someone that’s right up their alley. Yeah. And if you look at what Baza offers, um he’s a ground ball pitcher. He’s in the 73rd percentile in terms of ground ball percentage. Kind of like a former Valdez. Um so he’s pretty close to around um 30 something percent in terms of um ground ball percentage. He’s um 88th percentile. In terms of fast ball velocity, I’m pretty close to 97%. His expected ERA is about league average. So it’s the 57th percentile. Uh he had some bad luck last year a little bit. His walks is below league average at 32nd percentile. The barrel percentage is 28th percentile. So he was up a little bit last year with target hit percentages uh at 59th percentile. So uh he kind of had some um issues last year, but his erra has never been super great. But I think if the Astros continue their ways of fixing pitchers, I think Shane Boss would be a good um project for the Houston Astros. And it the question is how much would it cost? It’s not going to be a matter of Jake Myers. Hey, here’s Jake Meyers for boss. You’re going to have to give up something else. And uh there’s like you did mention there’s nothing close but the two sides have um met and there’s been some speculation that they have a framework of a deal laid out but um we don’t know how close they are. They’re probably um not going to trade him but this is the type of player that the Astros are looking for. They’re looking for somebody that’s controllable. He’s um Bos is under team control for the next two seasons. He’s a free agent in 2029. He’s due to make about what $3.1 million this next year. So, um this is exactly the type of player that the Astros would be looking for. Uh actually, I take that back. Um he’s got three years of Yeah. Yeah. I was about to say he’s got he’s got three years of control. He’s 26 years old. And I I think he’s got a high upside. he’s got potential to take on one of your your either number two or number three position. But look, the Astros are going to have to go there at some point. And I know there are a lot of comments on those um in our chat of of people that are watching us live saying, “Well, you know, here we go bargain men shopping. Are we going to go and try to get a discount?” It’s just one of those things. Um, you know what what you want to know though if you get this guy is is is how is he how is he going like you don’t have a crystal ball. You can’t say whether it’s going to work or not until you get him here. Is he going to be a guy, you know, is he going to have injury issues? Is he going to be able to decrease, you know, any walks that he has? Is he going to be able to to decrease um you know the runs he gives up? That will be decided by the Astros pitching staff. But Eric, I think they have the pitching staff to uh I mean the pitching coaches to um fix this. Um Shane Baz, you know, like you said, do 3.1 million. I I mean 3 years until he’s 30. It’s this is a bargain deal. And I think because of that reason, that structure of the trade is probably what will be the biggest hindrance because they’re going to want something more than Jake Meyers. And maybe this might be a deal where they do take on a prospect who is almost major league ready. I don’t know. Yeah. So, if you’re looking at his change up, he has a 96% active spin. It has a total movement of about 19.2 in. His cutter has a 49% active spin, which has a movement of about 7.4 in. The fast ball has a 94% active spin, 19.2. knuckle curve 72% spin for 16.9 um percent sorry 16.9 inches um change and then he has also has a slider which is 23% active spin and it has a 4.3 uh% uh inches movement. So a lot of this has to do with uh spin rate and what the Astros are looking for. They’re looking for this type of pitcher and he is the perfect candidate for a trade. But it’s just a matter of it doesn’t matter if the Astros want boss. It’s just a matter of how much will the Rays want. Are you going to have to give up Bryce Matthews? Are you going to have to give up Brito? I know this is a guy that the Rays are possibly looking at getting. So this is um what is it going to take to get boss and uh how much are you willing to give up? They already thin Astros farm system, but we already know that the Astros are not gonna sign any bigname free agents. But guys, we’ll go and continue this conversation. We got some updates from Dana Brown and Joe Spatada, but if you want to continue talking, Bos, we can go and continue talking this after the break. So um we’re going to go ahead and talk a little bit more about um uh boss a little bit later, but let’s go and talk about some winter update meetings updates. I know that this is kind of exciting when the GM and the manager kind of talk about things and say this is the state of the um Astros right now. And I saw I’m not going to name this website, but I thought it was hilarious. They were like, did you see the subtle hint about Esacho Parades and how they said that he should be ready to go by spring training? That means the Astros are keeping Esoch Parades. No, they’re just giving an update. Stop reading too much into it. Yes, they are keeping Bradies, but you don’t have to write a whole article about that. It’s just it’s just what they do. They give updates at the winter meetings. Hey, well, that’s what I’m a GM. That’s what you do at the winter meetings. Just saying. Yeah, exactly. But I I I think there were some significant things that they that they did talk about. Jo Espatada um did did talk about guys like Yordon Alvarez um and Dana Brown talked about Yordon Alvarez and how they plan on using him as mainly a designated hitter. Um that because of his health um the defensive positioning of José Altouve his defensive future is yet to be determined. So, there were some key things that they talked about that I think are significant going into the 2026 season. I do like the fact that they did say that Paradis will be full go, will be ready to rock and roll once opening day gets here. Um, I was kind of disappointed they didn’t mention bringing in Julie Guriel for a spring training try out. I’m joking. I saw today that he’s going to try to revamp his his career at 41 years old and try to get on with the team. Good for Julie Gurio. We could we could see we we could stand some Lapignia back in baseball. But with this talk about Yordon Alvarez not playing left field a whole lot and mainly playing DH, you hope that his run production increases and you hope that he doesn’t have this chasm between the batting average and results and the OPS and everything when he’s in the field versus when he’s just dhing Eric. And that’s my only concern there. I do understand and I do know that Yordon Alvarez, his health is top priority for this team. But I thought that was pretty interesting that they came out and that was one of the things that they did say. Yordon, he’s basically going to be our DH. Uh yeah. Um Alt did have the minor um offseason foot procedure, but Dana Brown did say that he’s back to workouts. Uh he should be good. Um I like you I mentioned Isach Parades and Alvarez should be full go for spring training and uh the Astros should be entering spring training healthier than expected. So uh I don’t think that injuries are going to linger into next year but we never know what can happen. So uh we’ll see what happens. But the Astros also I speak while we’re speaking of injuries, the Astros promoted Eric Velasquez to the head athletic trainer. So he’s somebody that worked with the head athletic trainer last year. So now he’s going to be the head honcho. So now I I’ve loved all the messages, not messages, but all the stuff on X I’ve seen all day. You saw last year how not to do things. Now let’s do it the correct way. And I know Dana Brown said that they re they went ahead and evaluated the return to play procedures and they did a full audit of it. Uh they he didn’t really elaborate on what they found and what they’re going to do about it. But I’m sure they have some idea about hey this ain’t working. We got to have a better return to play pol uh procedure. And this is something that James Click suggested before he got fired. And so this is something that has cost the Astros on many occasions, whether it’s a pitcher coming back too soon or a hitter coming back too soon, whatever it is. But, uh, they’ve got to fix this. And if Velasquez is that guy who’s going to get that, uh, done. Sure. Yeah, definitely. And you never know until things happen. And I’m pretty sure he’s under pretty specific orders of what to do, what not to do, what the expectations are. I mean, two seasons in a row with just a injury riddled lineup. Surely the law of average is in the is in the Astros favor, you know. Um, Eric, another thing that we’ve that we’ve talked that that was that was talked about today by both Job Spot and um Dana Brown is their lavishing of compliments towards Zack Cole. Okay. Um Dana Brown said that he’s one of he’s he’s one of the exciting ones to watch this spring to see if that month of service time has really prepared him for another year at the big league level. Brown said we’ll definitely have our eyes on him and we’re excited about his future. Um you know they like young players. Jo Espatada loves giving young players um playing time and so him and Melton will definitely um have an opportunity to have it show for you know for them if Jake Meyers is traded because you’re going to have to have Altuve in the outfield. I know that um they haven’t really specified how much playing time or who’s playing where if Altuve is going to be playing a lot of second base. I mean, if Al if Alvarez is going to be the maj playing majority at DH, but then where are you going to put Parades? That’s the problem. There’s just some disconnect here. Like I would think that, hey, you have a DH spot, you could put Parades there. But if um if Alvarez is going to play majority at the DH spot, then where you could put Parades? Yes, you can move them around between first base and third base, maybe some second base, but still that’s not enough playing time for your best hitter on the team. So, something’s got to give. And I know you can move Korea to shortstop and you can kind of have a evolving revolving door in on the infield, but something’s got to uh happen. Um there’s a log jam on the infield and I don’t know if it’s going to be a trade, but uh we’ll have to go and continue this conversation. But before we do, um Dana Brown did something that we’ve been talking about about trading, sorry, signing a player with a qualifying offer attached. He said, “We don’t like losing draft picks. That’s the bloodline of the organization. Uh if we have to, we will, but we don’t like doing it.” And so this is why the Astros have not gone after the top um pitchers out there. So just keep that in mind while you’re thinking about Michael Keane and players like that. And guys, next we’ll go and talk about somebody that made it to the Hall of Fame. It wasn’t Roger Clemens. And unfortunately, he’s not going to be going to Hall of Fame anytime soon. So thank you for making the Lockdown Astros podcast your first listen every day. Hey y’all. Thank you’all for tuning in. This was way back in 2019. Uh, we’ve come a long way. So, thank you all the everydayers have made us your first listen every day. But right now, sometimes you have to patiently wait for good things to happen. That’s what happened to Roger Clemens. Wait, sorry, it did not happen. Roger Clemens, unfortunately, uh, one of the best pitchers in the game, somebody that has proven success with the Sions, with the MVP. I believe he got an MVP, but he there’s he just has all this like resume and because I know of the controversy and everything, but still like you would think that with like with Carlos Beltran getting um like I know Beltran didn’t really have the same type of issues, but with all these players that uh used peeds in the past or maybe are have the gambling issues in the past like Pete Rose possibly people can’t get over the fact of this like but players like Roger Clemens Barry Bonds they did not get elected and because they did not get elected by the the uh veterans committee or committee or whatever it’s called uh they were they will not get another chance until 2031. Okay. So, let’s so so let’s address the um 800 lb elephant in the room. Um the fact that Roger Clemens literally tested positive with his DNA of using steroids, that’s why he’s not in there. Balo and everything, that’s why Barry Bonds now. Barry Bonds probably one of the best hitters of all time, if not the best hitter of all time. But wouldn’t he be the best hitter? He was the best hitter before all this. before all this and clear was the best a good pitcher before. Well, look well look here’s the deal. Here’s the deal and this is this is a stance that I’ve always had. A lot of these guys were using and this isn’t about steroids this whole show, but a lot of these guys were using steroids when it was not against league rules. It may have been against the law, which was a whole different discussion, right? But it was against league rules. The league had no problems with it. I know for a fact that they were handing out steroids in the minor leagues. I had friends in the minor leagues at the time and I know for a fact that they were popping them like tic tacs, okay? But they don’t you never concentrate on the guy that hit 180 and three home runs with steroids. You still have to be able to hit the ball far. But look, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds at this point probably will never get in. Their next candidacy, they’re not eligible for 2030 or 2032 on the contemporary ballot. Gary Sheffield, excellent player, not eligible. Donnie Baseball, Dale Murphy, it sucks that they’re not in that those guys should be in. But hey, get this. Jeff Kent, one of four now Astros from the 2003 Houston Astros team on that roster. Four of them Hall of Famers. Beio, Bagwell, Wagner, now Jeff Kent. Now, Jeff Kent’s not going in obviously as an Astro, but that was a pretty good team back then back in 03. I pulled up I pulled up some of the um you know, I pulled up the roster. Do you know besides Brad Osmus who the Do you know who one of the other two catchers were in 03? Do you do Eric, do you remember these guys? Mitch Mlesky or No, that’s 2000. No, Mitch Mleski is good. No, it wasn’t. No, Sid Bring was a first baseman. I’ll give you I’ll give you a hint. One of the catchers last names started with the letter Z. Do you remember Greg Zhan? Greg Ronald Chavez. And there was one ann one announcer that was on this team as an infielder for the Houston Astros. Uh Jeff Blum. Jeff Blum. Very good. Um Adam Everett. Some say one of the best defensive shorts stops that we’ve had. Um Morgan Endsberg was on that team, right? Morgan Insburg was Yes. Yes. Yes, he was on this team. And actually Mitch Mlesky was on this team. Mike Lamb was not on this team. Um you had Orlando Merrced. You had um Kirk Slos, Eric’s favorite pitcher. Um, Royalt, Greg Maddox, right? Roy Oswalt, Pete Monroe. I mean, look, this this goes back, right? Brad Lig, Scott Linbrink, Octoio Dotel, Bruce Chin. Look, this team, four Hall of Famers on it. That’s really cool. Um, so Jeff Kent, whether people think you deserve it or not, you’re in. So nobody can argue once you’re in. It doesn’t matter what people say, you’re in. And so I think that’s great. Um he will go in as a San Francisco Giant I believe. Um because that is really really um where where he did most of his damage and there are a lot of people who say he’s kind of on the bubble but you know what he’s in. So you can’t really argue it now. He had the most home runs ever as a primary second baseman with 377. He was a 2000 um NL MVP, five star, fivetime all-star. He was pretty good defensive player when he was not washing cars or his motorcycle, whatever the situation was there. But uh he did get 14 out of the 16 v votes. He needed 12 to get in to the contemporary era committee. So um Carl Delgado was the next highest with nine votes. Don Manly and Dale Murphy each re received six votes. They are still eligible, but Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Gary Sheffield, Fernando Valenuela, um, all got fewer than five. That means they would not be considered again till 2031, right? So, this so Valenuela, I believe, had 102 or 105 complete games. Yeah, that was unreal. like that dude. I think if his career would have been longer, um I I I think that’s a knock on a lot of guys like they don’t have enough. I mean, there’s there’s a lot of people that think Lance Burkeman should be in the Hall of Fame. Um you know, Roy Oswalt, I mean, Roy Oswalt had a hell of a career. Astros Hall of Fame for sure, but yeah, exact. Well, no, I’m just saying. I mean, I’m just saying these are names that people bring up that are that are kind of like on that bubble. And um when I talk about this with other players with former players, they say, “Look, that’s why it’s like the best of the best.” And and you know, there there are there are a lot of guys that are on the ballot this year that I’m like that’s I don’t I don’t think they’re Hall of Fame material, but you know, they get their shot. Yeah. So, uh, we’ll see, um, what happens in the future in terms of the actual Hall of Fame vote this year. That won’t be until, uh, January, but congratulations, Jeff Kent. I know that Vigio moved to the outfield so he could play second base for Houston Astros for two seasons. Um, and so that was a that’s how it ties into the Lockdown Astros podcast. What would it take to get Shane Baz
Y’all are doing a good job of keeping us up to date and entertained.
He had such a problem finding a center fielder after what's his name went to Toronto and now you have one and now you're fixing to get rid of him
I really think they need to move Myers’s and with a bevy of teams chomping at the bit for a piece that could help his value go up even more
Let’s trade Meyers and Jacob Melton for him!😂
Dana Brown needs to tell Jim Crane that some of the Prospects they have are better players than these MLB players in trades. Don't get scammed.
MLB player for MLB player in trade. Don't trade prospects in trades. Astros must keep talent in the Farm System.
Anderson Brito and Miguel Ullola must be given a chance for a starting spot in the rotation. Anderson Brito I think is a Star Pitcher, he can become a #2,#3 Starter.
How attached are we all to Jeremy Pena? He's great and all, but what are the chances that the Astros extend him? Is ZERO too low? Moving Pena gets us BIG consideration in return and frees up that infield logjam. I'm not terribly smitten with Yanier Diaz anymore either, and would not at all be opposed to moving him and re-signing Caratini to be our starting catcher, perhaps? I think we're stuck with Walker, unfortunately, so we just have to cross our fingers and look at the defensive brightside. If we can get the value that it seems we can get from Meyers, then ok, that's great too. I think they have a chance to bring in big time frontline guys to address the glaring issues. Even with a penny-pinching, uncreative billionaire at the helm, they should be able to address what ails 'em!
Love you guys but the ads are BRUTAL!
Isaac Paredes for Payton Tolle or Connelly Early.
Dana Brown should ask for both Pitchers.
Payton Tolle has Tarik Skubal vibes.
97-99 mph Fastball, nasty slider.
Payton Tolle must be in the Isaac Paredes trade.
