The Vancouver Canucks Have A QUINN HUGHES Problem..

The Vancouver Canucks have officially hit rock bottom. And I hate to say it, but I think this is just the beginning. It’s no secret how important of a season this is for the Vancouver Conucks. Not only did they resign some of their big players like Brock Besser and Thatcher Demco in the off season, but there was also the whole Person underplaying his contract noise, and most importantly, Quinn Hughes going on the record to say that he wants to play with his brothers at some point in his career. This sent a shock wave of worry not only through the fan base but also through the front office with essentially every report surrounding the Canucks having a small section dedicated to Quinn Hughes and his future uncertainty with the organization. Well, just a few days ago, reputable sources leaked that the Canucks and Devils have been in conversations about a potential trade to send Quinn Hughes to New Jersey. And when asked by reporters, his response may have guaranteed that he is all but gone. So today, let’s not only talk about the Vancouver Conucks and their very poor start to the season, but also talk about whether or not they still have a chance to keep Quinn Hughes in town. What’s up everyone? Welcome back to the channel yet again for another season. It’s feeling like the Vancouver Conucks are making headlines for all of the wrong reasons with the latest reports from Elliot Freriedman suggesting that the New Jersey Devils and Vancouver Conucks have gotten into at least a starting conversation about a potential Quinn Hughes trade. So today, not only did I want to talk about that report, but I also wanted to give you guys kind of a full breakdown of why this is all happening from when it started to how we got here today, as well as kind of talk about some of the situations that could lead to this trade and some of the situations that could prevent this trade from happening. So without further ado, if you guys have been enjoying the content lately, give this video a thumbs up, subscribe now, and let’s get into today’s breakdown. So, to better understand how we got into this position, we need to first go back to September when Jack Hughes was asked about potentially playing with his brother Quinn in the future. Quote, “This is a headline question. You know, honestly, I’m not afraid to say it. Yeah, I would love for Quinn to eventually I’d like to play with him. And whether that’s in New Jersey or what time that takes, at some point, I want to play with Quinn. But yeah, that’s the question going around. They talk about it all day in Vancouver, you know. But yeah, I’d like to play with Quinn at some point. Pretty powerful statement from Jack Hughes, but nothing too crazy. But then two days later, Quinn was asked to make a response on Jack Hugh’s statement, and this is what he had to say. Quote, I mean, he’s my brother. What’s he supposed to say? First of all, I don’t want to play with him. We have contracts and whatnot, and he’s on a different team, but would it be fun to play with my brothers at some point? Of course. I think if you guys have brothers, you would say the same thing. But we do have contracts. I’m excited to be in Vancouver and I feel like last year was a little bit of a failure. So, I feel like I got things to do there. And I know Jack, he loves Jersey and he’s got stuff to do also. End quote. On the surface, it seems harmless, right? Just two brothers talking about wanting to play hockey together. But hockey players, they don’t usually talk like this. When you’re happy with your current situation and you feel like your future is solidified, you don’t typically talk about wanting to play for a different organization or I don’t know, maybe playing with other players. You usually just say, “Yeah, it’s a funny quote from Jack. It’s a funny thing for him to say.” And you just move on. But again, nobody really looked too much into this because we all expected them to want to play with each other, but whether that happened or not, that was kind of always the question. So, fast forward a few months to December 5th, 2025. The Canucks sit very last in the league. And you can clearly see the frustration with Quinn Hughes during every post or pregame media conference. And naturally with losing comes speculation, and the rumors regarding Quinn Hughes being traded have started to pop up again since the organization has not yet signed him to a new future extension. Up to this point, pure speculation, right? But then Sportsnet’s Elliot Freriedman reported on his segment during hockey night in Canada that the Vancouver Conucks and New Jersey Devils have touched base on star defenseman Quinn Hughes, making a Hughes brother reunion a much more real conversation than it ever has been. And this was even further solidified because right after a huge 4-2 win against the Minnesota Wild, reporters approached Quinn Hughes to talk to him about this report from Freriedman. And his comments, “Yeah, they’re not exactly great if you’re a Vancouver Conucks fan.” It wasn’t like if there was a call that me, Jim, and Tom hopped on a call. I wasn’t a part of that. But obviously, I’m aware that things could happen. End quote. That last part, oh, it sticks out. But obviously, I’m aware that things like that could happen. That is not something you hear from players every day. And like I kind of alluded to a few moments ago, if you’re happy with your situation, you don’t entertain trade rumors. And this right here, that one little blip of his quote, that’s entertaining a trade rumor. And maybe all of us are overlooking this. Maybe we’re all putting too much stock into a few words. Maybe he was just frustrated like he has been for most of the season. But coming off a big win, you would think he would be like, “No, we’re finding our groove.” Which he did say a little bit of obviously he was like, “Young players are playing well, yada yada yada.” It wasn’t like he was fully entertaining the trade rumors, but that that definitely sticks out to me. And I think that it does entertain what Elliot Freriedman was saying that he is aware of the trade rumors and because he hasn’t signed, this is definitely something that’s on his radar. Well, now you have the backstory, everything that’s happened this season and how the Vancouver Canucks got themselves into this position with Quinn Hughes. And this is the challenging part of the video. What will the future look like? And I have three different scenarios that I want to go through today. Let’s start with number one. What would a Quinn Hughes deal look like with New Jersey? and can they recoup enough to not enter a full rebuild if they make that happen? Well, let’s see what New Jersey has to offer first. The Devils are in a very good position asset-wise to make a trade like this. They have all of their first and second round picks for the next three seasons, and on the roster are young established NHL pieces like Sen Neck and Dawson Mercer. Both players with upside and potential to grow. Their pipeline is also in a good spot with top prospects like Antonv 6’7 Russian defenseman that was taken 10th overall in the 2024 draft and Sheamus Casey a smaller but highly talented offensive defenseman. They also have plenty of well-established players like Yesper brought and Niggoish but I would be very stunned if you see any of these players involved in a trade for Quinn Hughes. Many of you might be asking at this point Jimmy why didn’t you mention Douggee Hamilton? Wouldn’t he be the clear and obvious piece for the Devils to trade for New Jersey? Yes. But for Vancouver, honestly, I think that would be a mistake. Hamilton is 32 years old, and yes, he’s a good right shot defenseman, which is something that every team could use. But the Canucks are not one of them. They have Heronic, Willinder, and Tyler Meyers, which means that if the Devils really wanted to include Douggee Hamilton in a trade like this, they would have to attach even more assets to sweeten the pot for Vancouver. And even then, he’s leaving his prime and his injury prone. I just don’t think that that’s the type of trade that Vancouver is looking for here. So, in my opinion, it’s very likely that Douggee is not going to be involved in a trade like this. He has a 10 team no trade clause and I can’t imagine that he wants to go to Vancouver if they’re rebuilding. It doesn’t make any sense for Vancouver given the amount of right shot defenseman that they have and I’m sure they want to get a younger piece which means that it’s going to either be Dawson Mercer or Simone Demick. I don’t know which one Devils fans would prefer sending off, but realistically, if Douggee Hamilton is the biggest piece here, I think that New Jersey is going to get a fleece, but I just don’t see that happening. Moving on to point number two for their future. Is there a path for the Canucks to keep Quinn Hughes on this roster? Never say never, but given how their season has played out so far, I’m leaning more towards him going to New Jersey than resigning in Vancouver. Does that mean he won’t finish out this season and maybe he’ll still be on the Conucks roster next year? Who knows? But future- wise, I just don’t see him signing an extension given the current state of this Vancouver group. They are 22nd in goals for per game at 2.87. They have the 13th ranked power play in the league to go alongside their 30th ranked penalty kill. And their goalending, which they are paying a substantial amount of money towards, has been up and down. But following Thatcher Demco’s injury, it has dropped to last place in goals against average and 26th in save percentage. To make matters even worse, the Canucks do not have a single player at a point per game pace. And aside from Quinn Hughes and Elias Person, all of their players have fewer than 20 points. So, the path for the Canucks to keep Quinn Hughes start winning games. But I just don’t think that’s going to happen. Especially with how competitive their division has been this year and the rise of some of those younger rebuilding teams like Anaheim and San Jose. It’s starting to feel like Vancouver is the odd one out. And unfortunately, if they’re not winning games, I don’t see Quinn Hughes signing an extension. But hey, maybe they’ll turn it around. There are some good players on this team. Who knows? But it just seems very unlikely at this point. And lastly, the third point of this, should the Conucks be exploring other trade partners? And honestly, I think yeah, Quinn Hughes doesn’t have a no trade clause, so obviously they can send him wherever they want. But it does become complicated because if he really wants to play with his brothers in New Jersey, then why would younger teams like Chicago, San Jose, Philadelphia want to make that trade for 1 and a half years of Quinn Hughes? and if their futures a little bit further down the road, this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to give up that many assets. So, that leads to the next part of this. Should contenders be trading for Quinn Hughes? Like I said, he has no trade clause. He has a year and a half left on his deal. So, you do have a short window. And he’s making a very, very good contract right now. So, it’s not like he’s not affordable. Imagine a team like Colorado going out and trading for him. You pair Quinn Hughes and Kale Mar. That’s insane. Edmonton could use a guy like Quinn, but obviously I don’t see Vancouver sending him to one of their biggest division rivals, but other teams like Toronto who’s in desperate need for a defenseman. Those are the type of teams that may be calling the Canucks about Quinn Hughes, and I think that they should be. Whether you believe he’s going to resign or not, who knows? There is a chance that maybe he is willing to sign a four-year deal, say, with one of those teams. But even if he doesn’t, if you feel like your window is now like Colorado, I don’t see why maybe you wouldn’t at least call to see what they’re asking for with this. But yeah, that’s the whole Quinn Hughes situation. I think there’s a lot of paths that this is going to go down. Who knows where he’s going to end up or if he’s going to stay put. But let me know what you guys think in the comments below. How are you feeling about the Quinn Hughes situation? How are you feeling about the Vancouver Canucks and their current situation? The Vancouver Canucks have a Quinn Hughes problem.. For months speculation has been growing in regards to a potential Quinn Hughes trade to New Jersey, a deal that would reunite the three Hughes brothers. But with Quinn having another year on his contract and how important he is in Vancouver, the Canucks are not quite ready to let go of their captain and franchise defenseman. That is until recent reports show us that maybe the Canucks have hit rock bottom, and maybe that speculated Hughes brother reunion is more realistic now than it ever has been..Subscribe to Jimmy Hockey for more NHL News and Breakdowns.

  1. Paying demko and treating him like Bobrovsky
When he's a. 500 goaltender at best when he sits out most half seasons while Quinn playes the most minutes per game in the NHL. He's the best defenseman in the NHL one of the top players. I'll probably take a break from the canucks like I did in the messier keener days.
I can't watch a team dump players over greed.

  2. Some people think that if the Canucks throw enough money at Quinn he'll stay, it's not about money. There isn't enough money in the world that the Vancouver Canucks can throw at Quinn Hughes that would put his name on the cup and him holding it up.
Winners want to win, little kids playing right now who are going to play in the NHL aren't thinking about a big payday. They want to be on a winning team and they want to hold up the Stanley cup and there name on it. That's just a fact.
Players who stay on a losing team and are content there collecting a cheque are the real losers. Not going to name names but you know. They are the ones who should be traded. Too bad there is no machine too measure how much heart a player has.

  3. It's so hard to ne a canuck fan right now. Your talking injury prone, take a deep dive into goaltending. It's bad. Makes you wonder what is demko holding over canucks ownership. Makes no sense. Canucks can turn things around by just dumping demko use his salary and the 2 mill extra on one forward. Fuck bring Crosby here to play with Hughes

  4. a team like the canes would gladly take quinn for 2 playoff runs. same for dallas and the capitals. imo the canucks won't move quinn unless there is a young top 6 centre in the deal plus plus plus.

  5. There's a lot of reasons he would bounce for a US Market. Less Taxes, better team, closer to family etc. The way the management has imploded the team from first overall at Christmas 2 years ago to last overall now with a myriad of terrible decisions in succession.. is a logical reason for anyone to want out. The issue I have is these modern athletes being soft and having no emotional control, sulking when things don't go their way. He's the captain, and a terrible choice at that. It's like they Gave him the C and picked his favorite D coach as the new coach in hopes that pandering to him will sway him to stay, instead of simply creating an environment of excellence around him that he can fit into in his lead by example, introvert style. He's not a vocal leader, and he looks 12 years old, and wears his feeling on his face, so he's in most ways a very poor choice to lead a team. No 5'10, 178lb nonphysical offensive defenseman has ever lead a team to a cup as the best player. If he's your best player, and his style doesn't scale well in tight checking, physical playoff situations.. you ain't winning anything. Trade him this year, the sooner the better. The more time left on his deal, the more you can get a kings randsom for him and begin to undo the damage that has been done by all those poor managerial decisions.

  6. The Canucks should rebuild. Nothing wrong with that. Every team goes through it eventually. It is odd the Hughes wants out though. Some captains stick by their team through thick and thin.

  7. I think Hughes will play with his brothers at the Olympics and after that back to the Canucks and stay with the Canucks! He's going to get a huge contract and if he wins a Stanley Cup with a team who had never won he'll always be known as a GOD in Vancouver. Jersey had done it already. Vancouver is a chance to make history! It would be 1st Stanley Cup for both! Why leave a city that loves you!?? Where you have a chance to make history?

  8. Bye Hughes thanks for everything we will always love you, however we suck and it's clear you're unhappy. So we have trade you and let you be happy with another team

  9. No it isnt. We have needed a rebuild for over a decade. Now Aquilini might be forced to see the error of his ways and allow an actual rebuild. Giving away value to remain mediocre ain't it. The one playoff run was just a smoke screen, this team was never good enough. Quinn is the only player we have left of immense value.

  10. the Canucks like any other team devastated by injury is going to lose. What team in NHL history has lost every one of their bonafide centermen at the same time.EP 40 ,Chytil,Blueger etc -out .Last game against Detroit they had an AHL center on the 1st and 2nd lines and a 4th line center at 3rd line and a winger as the 4th line center.Newsflash! you are going to lose 4 out of 5 games .Throw in that your #1 goalie is ALWAYS injured and guess what—you continue to lose. You have Quinn Hughes to build around and EP40 is fighting to maintain a level commensurate to his massive contract.BUT those AHL PLAYERS ARE ONLY GONNA IMPROVE.

  11. Q. Hughes in toronto would be such a great fit. They're bleeding without that marner puck movement. They have plenty of finishers. Quinn can skate and move the puck.

  12. The last 2 years of the Canucks have made more jaded than ever. Rebuild or not, I think I am kind of done with this team and possibly hockey as a whole. I've been a fan for almost 40 years. Been to hundreds of games. If they do finish last and go rebuild, I expect them to somehow drop to the 10th pick over all despite the current rules making that impossible. The Canucks have never moved up in the draft, only down. Maybe I am being defeatist, but after 40 years with only 2 cup finals to show for it and complete trash for most of the other 38 years, it would be foolish to think it will ever change.

  13. The time for panic has come and gone lol.
The time of apathy has arrived.
Vancouver fans are fucking done. This Hughes stuff wasn't a thing until the hostile ass media started pushing it.

It has been manifested into reality by shitass media and content creators.
Hughes said an incredibly vague "yeah, I would love to play with my brothers"
And the media took off and started proclaiming HUGHES WANTS OUT OF VANCOUVER!!!
Despite the fact that Hughes himself sated the EXACT opposite. "I am a Canuck, I want to be the captain here"

Now yeah, he has been chased the fuck out the door by hostile media.

My bet is he WILL not end up in NJ.
Let me know what the Devil's have to offer that the Canucks need? Not much.
The devil's could not give what Hughes is valued
