Aaron Glenn Press Conference (12/12) | New York Jets

Good morning. Hey, it’s a small group uh in here today because before I get in this injury these injuries, um I think it’s a huge announcement that you guys should hear. At 53 years old, I’ll be making a comeback and I’ll be getting ready to play in a couple of weeks um against Diggs and against Shakir Buffalo. So, look up uh in 2008 that you played against Rivers. Yeah. Yeah, I did. That’s I think it’s outstanding. I think it’s outstanding. Uh but anyway, anyway, let me um let me get to these injuries. Um, and I’m going to talk about guys that are going to be out, and then I will elaborate more um on that. So, Tyrod will be out, Justin will be out, Mason Taylor will be out, AZ will be out, and Kiko will be out. So, that means that Brady will be our starting quarterback this week. He’s gotten all the reps with the ones, and uh and Adrian will be our backup uh who knows our system. Again, been here since uh when he was here in training camp. Um and he just came right in. he understands the flow of what we’re going to do as far as uh an offense when it comes to this game. Um man, we’ve been really focusing on there’s some similarities the way that um both team or both coaches think uh the way that you uh play offense, defense, and special teams. And we have to uh we have to overcome a lot of those things as far as running the ball, stopping the run, uh controlling the clock, um things like that. And those are some conversations that we’ve been having inhouse uh throughout the week. Um obviously today is a day of situations uh in red week of going to game. It was just a tough situation of him not getting a chance to get all the reps. Uh but now this week he’s had a chance to get all the reps, with the ones, get a chance to communicate uh with the O line, with the receivers, with the tight ends, um with the with the coaching staff on exactly how we want to go about playing this game. So um man, I have all the confidence in the world. That’s something I’ve stated, you know, from the very beginning. Uh he’ll be a good player in this league. Um and he have his opportunity again this week. He said the other day uh something interesting when we talked to him that um leadership if you show confidence. Yeah. Competence. Yeah. That guys around you believe. Yeah. And he said that he you know had that and the guys believed in what he was doing and he’s going to run with that. Is that rare for a guy who’s an undrafted rookie? No. No, it’s not rare. And and the reason I say that because there’s a number of um of young guys that come in this league um that lead in a number of different ways and that’s one of the ways you can lead. Um and I also think you can lead by just influence by the way that you carry yourself and I think um he’s doing a really good job of that too. So, it’s not the competence part, it’s the it’s the influence part on how he works, you know, the time he gets in the morning, when he leaves, um the way he goes into command the hu commands the huddle, um the way he gets the play call out, all those things um shows that he’s been studying his butt off uh for this moment. And to me, every quarterback, and I think every one of them do, um, every quarterback should prepare like they’re a starter because you just don’t know when it’s going to happen when you have to get in and be able to lead a group of men, um, to score touchdowns. So, um, again, he’s had a hell of a week. Again, we still have more work to do, right? But I’m looking forward to how he finish this week off. And it’s obviously an ideal situation with all these guys being here, but I’m I’m curious like do you do you enjoy um like giving an undrafted guy like him an opportunity like this? Like like getting to see him have his opportunity where a lot of undrafted quarterbacks don’t really get that opportunity. I really enjoy just watching um guys on this team get opportunity in general. Um, I don’t care draft pick, not a draft pick, where you come from. Um, because I know how hard it is in this business and sometimes you only have one shot and when you have that one shot, man, you have to you have to shine in that shot and cuz you never know if you’re going to get it again. So, um, he understands that along with any other guy that gets an opportunity, they understand that also. Um, I mean, I I am I am looking forward to to him, you know, going out just like any of our other guys that has gotten a shot and has shown up. So, um, this will be a good week for him. The um contract extension, Josh Myers, y was that a priority for the organization? Uh, he deserves it. He deserves it and again, he came to a team um where he knew there was going to be competition and stiff competition at that. You don’t you don’t get that too often. Um where you have a guy like Tip that’s um that’s started and then he’s a guy that was a start and he comes in and he wants to battle. Um and listen, I I feel very fortunate that he chose us, this team, and and me to be uh to be his coach to come in and battle for that spot. and he’s done everything uh that you would want to be done as a player um going out there playing and practicing and um the way he’s carried himself in the building, outside the building. So um he deserved it. He deserved it and I’m happy for him. You talk about the the challenge with the injuries in the defensive backfield, especially the juggling that you guys are doing uh back there and then also with Kiko being out. Uh, can you speak about how Walker’s come in and acclimated himself? Uh, well, welcome to the NFL and, you know, these things happen and we have a number of guys that’s going g going in and out of the lineup and that’s that’s never going to change in this league. Um, injuries happen and listen, you you don’t sit back and you worry about them. I think most of the coaches that that that they practice a certain way and they go in games a certain way not worry about injury are the ones that really can get over the hump in those situations. So we have Clark, we have um J, we have all these guys in the end of the secondary that has filled in has done a good job for us and I don’t expect anything different from any guy, you know, offense, defense or special teams that comes in and play for us. Do you worry about the the interception thing getting heads and maybe they’re they try to do too much trying to make a play at all? That that’s that’s a good question because that can happen because you hear it so much, you know, from the outside. Um from the inside is always preached about, man, this and we’re trying to attack the football, but um we just try to get our guys to just man play ball and and and let those things come. And this has been very unfortunate they haven’t came, you know, um in bunches like we would want them to. Um, but listen, we have uh we have four games and we’re still going to attack and we’re still going to coach and we’re still going to emphasize and you know at some point, you know, we we’ll get it. We’ll get it and hopefully at that point, you know, they will come in bunches for us. So, I just want our guys to go out there and play um and just be ball aware and when the opportunity presents itself, let’s make uh take advantage of those opportunities. Take a couple more. We um we talked to you a lot about the penalties and training and that priority. How do you feel like you’ve done overall in that regard and getting the penalties now? Penalties. I think the guys have done a good job. Um like I said, when when you uh when you’ve been a high penalty team for two straight years, like what leading the league in penalties and uh at one point we was half. I think we dipped a little bit on that. Um the thing is we’re we’re definitely not as bad as we we start the season off that way and we kind of calm that down. So, uh, I think the the players were, um, like they understood that and they want to make sure that that wasn’t a part of of of who we were as a team. They’ve done a good job of, um, of taking those things down. So, we still have some a ways to go to get exactly where we want to be. Um, we’re working our ass off to do that along with everything else as far as executing what we do on offense, coaches, making sure we prepare the team, the prepare the team like we should, um, and make sure we go out there and execute as a unit. What’s it been like? What’s it been like watching this offensive line gel together? This is going to be the 14th time where you start the same. No doubt. That’s um man that is huge. Uh continuity with the offensive line. I think every team, you know, wants to have that and for us to be able to have that, you know, going to this this week um is huge for us. Um and now not only do we want to have now we want to make sure the execution is also at a high level. I’m not saying that it hasn’t been uh but there’s a a huge standard when it comes to our officer line and um and those men are doing a hell of a job, you know, and they want to improve. Um but continuity, man, is huge for us to continue to have those guys work together like that. Thanks everybody. I’m back.

  1. This coach is completely lost; can someone name one player who was on the team last year, and has improved? Can someone explain how Fields is having the worst year of his career when provided with a solid offensive line, and for the most part a good WR1, TE1 and RB1. It’s coaching, isn’t it?

  2. Also, Aaron needs to bring up Wayne when he gets questions on undrafted players. They played together and Aaron knows it's possible to be a great player with the best hands ever. 😊

  3. Yes! finally! The best QB on the roster gets a shot. I watched this guy play out his career at Missouri. Each year he got better and better. Even some of his team mates said last week he went into the huddles and took charge, the game wasn't too big for him, we just need to catch the ball.
