On December 21, 2025, the Boston Red Sox acquired three-time All-Star Willson Contreras — a veteran right-handed hitting first baseman (formerly a catcher) — along with $8 million in cash from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for right-handed pitchers Hunter Dobbins (a major league-ready starter coming off a solid rookie season before an ACL injury), Yhoiker Fajardo (a promising 19-year-old prospect), and Blake Aita (a recent draft pick with minor league experience). Contreras, aged 33, waived his full no-trade clause after a contract restructure that added a $1 million bonus for him, leaving Boston responsible for approximately $34-36 million over 2026 ($18M) and 2027 ($17-18.5M), plus a reworked club option for 2028. The move addresses Boston’s need for a reliable right-handed bat to balance their lefty-heavy lineup and upgrade first base production/defense after missing out on free agents like Pete Alonso, while the rebuilding Cardinals continue shedding veterans (following their earlier Sonny Gray trade to Boston) to acquire young pitching depth.📝

  16. You could make a strong argument that Contreras had his best year yet in 2025. As a Sox fan that's a lot to give up but I think he'll be good for the Sox

  21. btw i saw a report that was saying the red sox might be out of the ketel marte trade after the cards trade and that the ketel marte trade talks may be over now entirely
