The Dallas Mavericks Are DOOMED by The Same Problems | Anthony Davis’ Return, Cooper Flagg Wall?

The Dallas Mavericks lost to the Philadelphia 76ers as ongoing issues with their roster remain unsolved. The Mavs continue to struggle with point guard depth, offensive efficiency, and defensive consistency, raising questions about their chances in the NBA playoff and lottery standings. Can Cooper Flagg shake off a potential rookie wall? Will Anthony Davis’s ramp-up change the Mavs’ season? Is the return of Kyrie Irving enough to turn things around for Dallas?

Nick Angstadt breaks down the Dallas Mavericks’ loss to the Sixers and dives into what’s going wrong for the Mavs this season. He discusses the impact of Cooper Flagg, Anthony Davis, and Kyrie Irving, along with performances by Max Christie, Naji Marshall, Brandon Williams, and not D’Angelo Russell. Listen as Nick analyzes coaching decisions by Jason Kidd, trade value situations involving Klay Thompson and Caleb Martin, and updates on Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II. This episode also looks at how the Mavs match up with teams like the Thunder, Spurs, Warriors, Grizzlies, Blazers, and more across the NBA.

  1. The issue is clear and I keep saying it. They have a 2 way rookie as their starting PG and another 2 way player as his backup. No offense but they need a Kyrie or you know as their PG. they also don’t have good offensive sets at all.

  2. I am not a fan of their half court offense. Too often there is Very little action, alot of standing and the ball not moving. A few times the ball moved and the results were good looks, clean drives. Cant rely on Nembhard, and B. will to be playing at an elite level each night. A lack of consistency, and Klay is taking some terrible shots. A positive is calling a 12 pt, 7 rb, 7 ast, for Coop a bad game shows he is ahead of schedule.

  3. I hate saying this but… Im glad to have a worse record than the Clippers. Every team needs to make sure they aren't a lottery team. On a more positive note i hope this experience being the main guy helps Coop make a successful playoff run next year.

  4. Hey Nick, is there a world where Risacher joins and is the starting 2. But more importantly he's the point of attack defender for the Mavs. He's got the length and athleticism. Also, I believe he's defensive upside was a reason he should have at least got top 10 in his draft class. Can he improve on that if he joins the Mavs or is defensive ability less trainable. I'm not that smart in basketball stuff so this is a legit question.

  5. When your team trades away the team engine (Luka) and also trades away its draft capital to fill the team with complimentary players that only work well with that engine, how do you recover?

Thinking about it, Cuban is really responsible for the mess, and that is just looking at the last few years starting when he decided to dump his knowledgeable GM Nelson.

First: he passed on local product Tyrese Maxie, who was one of the players slotted in at that pick pre-draft and reached for another player based on the advice of a sports gambler.

Second: he hired a GM with zero experience, Nico.

Third: either he or his new GM passed on offering an extension to Brunson, twice (before his last season with the Mavs and mid-season).

Fourth: he said the Mavs could offer more than any other team to keep Brunson, and then didn’t.

Fifth: he sold the team to an out of town group who had no clue when it came to basketball and totally relied on the GM Cuban hired. He should have sold to someone with local ties.

Sixth: his actions culminated in February of the historically bad trade of Luka, and the simply bad trade of Grimes.

Maybe Cuban forgot he was once a fan with limited resources and how his actions would destroy the enjoyment of ordinary fans he left behind?

  6. I told you last time VJ is going to be hyper motivated against Cooper. "You're not that guy". I guess he IS. And then you have the hometown guy showing out, you know, the MVP candidate Tyrese Maxey. Grimes revenge game, AD doesn't like playing against bigger stronger guys, etc, etc.. Yeah this is a bad match up.

  7. The Mavs could have kept Grimes and just not paid him like the Sixers or with 100% hindsight they could have given him PJ's money and traded PJ (i.e. before giving him the extension).
