Every report about Okamoto is conflicting
Isn’t this guy a writer for fansided? As in rumbunter which is banned here for being trash?
I bet Boston or San Diego
People forget who owns this team. Pirates were never adding a lot more payroll. It was all the money they cut last year by getting rid of Hayes and Bednar etc. Great moves but they havent really increased payroll much nor do I expect them too. So no Suarez either.
They said Ohtani was on a plane to Toronto right before he signed with the Dodgers. Calma.
As long as it isn’t the cubs that swoop in, losing him would be a little easier to stomach. Not giving up hope until he signs somewhere though.
Eh…not the most likely doesn’t mean the same as they will not.
Not saying that it is any more likely, but I’m not giving up on F5 Friday/Saturday until I see a report of who he does choose to sign with.
FUCK triolo i’ll actually cry

I watched the snippet of the podcast that the tweet is summing up. He’s not basing that on any actual info, it’s just his guess
This isn’t exactly any breaking news. As much as I want Okamoto to sign here, I never thought we were the favorites. If the money is close, I’d imagine a team on the West Coast is where he’ll pick. I think our best shot would be trying to sell him that he’d be “the guy” in our lineup instead of just a piece somewhere like the Padres.

This is a real nothing burger
If they don’t land Okamoto, I bet they go hard after Moncada and use him in a platoon role with Triolo getting the short side.
It won’t have as much power potential as Okamoto, but it would have far more offense than they had at 3B last year.
Of course, Moncada at third would be a defensive adventure.
Not the end of the world if Okamoto doesn’t land in Pittsburgh.
Although you obviously can’t count on him doing it over a full season (not yet anyway), Triolo has shown considerable improvement at the plate when he gets regular playing time. If he “played to the back of his baseball card” over a full season, he’d hit around .240 with 15-plus home runs. Not great, but coupled to his glovework—which IS great—that would be serviceable. Meanwhile we have more money to spend on a veteran starting pitcher, which if his last name is spelled “Scherzer” would be a significant add, even at this stage of his career.
West coast (much closer to Japan) with a much larger Asian community. Money can’t buy those things for him in Pittsburgh. They would have to overpay to get him *unless* he is a special “character” for whom the above perks do not matter.
Crazy thing is Triolo was not too bad when he fixed his swing although it might just be a fluke
I don’t think we get him bc of the west coast factor.
That’s incredibly depressing and this is legit since it’s Robert Murray
I hope they have a legit backup plan that isn’t Triolo and Moncada because if that’s the plan my hype going into next season is definitely not as high as it was prior to thinking they were getting Okamoto
If the issue is opt outs, I don’t get why they don’t just give him them
I get the vibe this will be used as an example for next year’s lockout. When a small market team aggressively tries and fails every time.
Goddamnit. It was fun to dream for a few days, I guess.
Even if he doesn’t sign, I’m still happy with Triolo. He’s much more valuable than people give him credit for
The Pirates rumored offer is 4 year $70M. If the Padres sign him for that it will cost them north of $100M because of a repeat offender of the Luxury tax. Boras hates the Pirates so he’s probably shopping our offer to find a team that may come out of nowhere. I think that’s more likely than the Padres spending $100M for him. Until he signs somewhere else I still like our chances.
