Feinsand: Pirates unlikely to get Okamoto, Padres could be the favorite

Basically what every Pirates beat/insider has said. The minute they signed O Hearn was the minute Okamoto was out of their price range. They dont wanna increase payroll much more. They just wanted to reallocate money and maybe increase it slightly which they have. Its over. Hopefully we use the money and extend Griffin now.
Padres or Mariners makes the most sense to me, but was still holding a little bit of hope
I’m curious as to what party leaks this and to what end. Like maybe Boras is trying to get the Pirates to step up more?
Sounds like the issue is that Boras wants an opt out clause every year. The Pirates do not want to pay the posting fee plus the contract for what will essentially be a 1 year deal if he is any good at all and wants to go back on the market for more money.
I hope that if they don’t add another bat and increase payroll over last year the fans keep the pressure on Nutting. They started running the off-season acquisitions like a REAL ballclub would which is long overdue, but they still have that Schwarber money they haven’t touched.
If they don’t sign another real bat, I’m gonna feel like Charlie Brown after Lucy pulls the football away YET AGAIN.
Everyone is referencing the same source that was just giving his insider opinion. It’s not new information, who cares. Unlikely was always the wheelhouse
My guess is the pirates have the best offer but they’re not offering opt outs, which is dumb. I’d rather have 1 year of Okamoto at 30 than 3 years of Suarez at 35-37 tbh
It’s a lot of opinions, but yeah, I’m in the camp he just doesn’t want to play in Pittsburgh.
I trust no insider when it comes to the Pirates.
Welp if that’s the case I hope it doesn’t go well and Boras regrets not getting his client long term security
If I’m Okamoto, the Pirates would be my frontrunner, simply because they are the only team offering me the everyday opportunity at my best position.
The other teams will either have him bouncing around or possibly even being a primary DH.
It’s already going to be a difficult task, learning the pitchers and adjusting to life in a new country, so why would I want to complicate it even more, by signing with a team that would have me also trying to play 2-4 different positions?
We know
Hard to say, but I’m enthusiastic (mildly) about them. I like the additions they have made so far and if they miss out here, maybe they can get someone else, at least they are putting forth real effort this time.
Here “lies” the conundrum…. This may all very well be the case, as Boras is a known impossible agent to deal with (and no fan of the Pirates, I suspect) but how do the pirates convince their fans that they did everything they could to secure this player
And it’s not all lip service? We don’t trust them. Plain and simple. They lie to us and obfuscate important details always in their favor (or woe is me mentality…we’re small market… waa.) Sewing so much distrust over the years falls into our inevitable doubting everything (and players making decisions here, I’d suspect, too.)
So… I will really want to see the details of what he signs for.
If there are opt out clauses, then they’re absolved.
If the contract isn’t all that wild, then we will
Be right back to where we started; Pirates are
Cheapskates.
I suspect they’ve already worked something out with Moncada and are just waiting to announce it until Okamoto officially slams the door on them.
I just want new information good or bad. We’ve been reading the same “updates” for a week now.
The only people who really know what is going on with Okamoto, are Okamoto and Boras. Not that I believe they are going to get him at this point but, this could just be Boras leaking stuff to try and get them to up their offer.
