[MLB] Japanese 1B/3B star Okamoto agrees to deal with Blue Jays (source)
January 3, 2026
Also, the Red Sox have made an aggressive offer to Bregman.
I got a bad case of Ricketts and there doesn’t appear to be a cure. 😢
I guess we’ll just sign another pen arm and limp along from there. 🤷🏻♂️

At this point I’m just trying to figure out what the fucking hold up is. Snip snap Jed and Carter
Just another billionaire worried more about his money than anything else.
Rickets won’t commit to any long term deals due to the cba expiring next year and a lockout looming. Biblical loses and all that.
4 yr $60mil seems pretty cheap honestly
what sucks is that we all want to see our Cubbies be good and make the playoffs and contend, but a season like last year just gives them their excuse; eventually someone will ask why they didn’t spend on this guy or that guy, and the answer will be ‘well look at what we did last year and we didn’t make any long term free agent splashes’
Are going to do this for every FA that signs? Okamoto is someone there was never any interest in. There’s zero need for him and yet people just want to spend money for the hell of it
you guys seriously couldn’t have expected them to go grab a 1b/3b from japan when we have shaw at 3rd and busch at 1st. yes shaw needs to improve more offensively but i mean come on lol
I am not upset at this because where does he play on this team?
I am pretty sure they are going to tell us again that we were seriously in play but only got outbid by a small margin in the last minute.
Do we really need a post on this sub every time one of the other 29 teams sign somebody? Where would Okamoto even fit our roster?
Cubbies don’t need this guy honestly. We’ve got Busch who’s earned the right to be the everyday 1b. I’m not high on Shaw but the front office isn’t going to spend the money. He’s a young guy who hit at every level on his way to the show and he was the best defensive third basemen in the league. Lastly, FUCK TOM RICKETTS!
Made a post in a different thread that I guess I *could* maybe see the logic in the Cubs being interested in Okamoto and finding a fit for him, but he was obviously a stretch to fit this roster and I doubt we could pitch him on a role he wanted.
Trust me, I’m a huge Imanaga and Seiya fan, but I think people are getting a little too obsessive about Japanese players.
I wanted Imai because I think he could have top of the rotation upside at a good price, but the front office wants controllable arms and a deal with a 1 year opt out isn’t controllable. It puts us back to square one rebuilding this rotation after 2026 when basically the entire roster hits free agency.
Something, something, something, fuck the Ricketts.
Something, something, something, fuck Shaw.
Horton, and Steele are not bad top of the rotation and playoff starters with some upside. We have 3 young potential stars in Shaw, Caissie, and Ballesteros. I have liked a mid level lefty for a few yrs at KC, and he’s avaliable. I don’t know numbers, but this has potential. Not that our front office could do it…let’s say Suzuki for Bubic, but that’s probably not completely fair coming off injuries etc, so throw in Cameron. Those 2 starters potential is too high, so make it fit with Taillon or Boyd, and mid level prospect. (I have no idea how much kc values either pitcher but both rumored to be available. Have Assad fight Shota for 5th and we have 3 playoff arms completely and 3 more fighting fir 4th starter plus Boyd or Taillon and Rae. Not horrible. Cassie, Shaw Ballesteros all get time. Not much depth behind, so we would need to sign Bregman or Suarez.
But we could also choose 2 of the 3 young ones, couple the odd one with Cameron, and some minor league talent, and now we can move for Marte or Alcantara (my choice if I had the checkbook, with Bregman and trading Shaw and Cameron + for Alcantara) nice rotation, nice coverage in the lineup for the 2 kids playing. I think Caissie needs time and not at dh. Ballesteros needs to develop a position but can help with the bat, so dh for him works.
