Jan 4th Update – Utah ranks 8th in offense (5v5), 6th in defense, 19th in goaltending, 14th in finishing, and goal differential of +5 is lower than expected
January 4, 2026
Interesting that Utah is one of 4 Western teams to have a positive goal differential, yet they sit 2 points behind the wildcard having played 2 more games.

Our analytics have been pretty darn great. Which just goes to show how little they matter if you can’t find a way to win
19th?!? But you told me our goaltending wasn’t AHL worthy!! /s
But seriously, something people don’t consider when they’re looking at the Mammoth record: most of Utah’s regulation losses come at only a 1 or 2 goal deficit; that’s to say, we don’t lose by big margins. So while we’re ~~16pts~~ 17pts behind a non-wildcard playoff position and now below NHL .500, our deeper stats show a team that might be competitive if they could win games more consistently.
We just aren’t the same club from game to game; sometimes we’re firing and doing well, and others we look dejected and disconnected. When Sergachev is on, he’s on fucking fire… but he hasn’t done that a lot this season. We send like half of our passes into players skates. Our line changes are abysmally slow. We need to stop the PP passing practice and shoot the fucking puck. I don’t disagree that Vitek needs work, but I’m not convinced yet that he’s incapable of doing the job as Utah’s backup.
I *will* say this: Tourigny is finally starting to look like he’s feeling the pressure of these losses. I hope he finds a way to get this club to win games and stay in the hunt.
Edited ~~for clarity, and math I guess.~~ for Reddit pedantry, since u/albertablood is incapable to deriving meaning from context apparently.
