Dan Campbell on his performance this season

  1. Obviously this is coach speak, but he did really screw up some games by going for it on 4th all the time like we still had our 2024 offense. To his credit he learned from that and corrected it.

  2. I just want to understand how morton bamboozled MCDC and our front office into thinking he was fucking competent to run an offense of this calibre

  3. This right here is why Dan Campbell is a true leader. ACCOUNTABILITY. Notice how Morton gave a very different response when asked a similar question… that dude better be gone

  4. No one will ever admit to it. But it may be a good thing that Campbell and this front office had the season they did.

  5. I would say C- but he did seem to wise up towards the end of the year in terms of game management and got some plays overturned.

  6. A true leader gives credit and accepts blame (paraphrasing a John Wooden quote). MCDC is a true leader in a world full of fake leadership.

  7. I love the accountability. Hopefully we see evidence of learning and growth in how games are managed moving forward.

  8. Getting on my soapbox to say stop following or posting the Detroit Times. Just a slop aggregator.

    Unless… you are Detroit Times.

  9. You see so many coaches throwing all the blame on their players and totally losing the locker room because of it. Not my fucking coach!!

  10. He’s a leader, and the best one I’ve ever seen coach our team. He’s one for three on OCs now though, and while some may disagree, I don’t think he’s done much better at DC. The miss(es) at coordinator killed us this year, along with misses/neglect in the trenches, but that’s not on him.

Don’t ever forget that he took us from a perennial laughing stock to a division/playoff contender. No other coach in my lifetime has done that, with the possible exception of Wayne Fontes, and he had Barry.

  11. Its hard to have your hands in everything and I think that was one of the main factors on why we struggled. With new coordinators, he couldnt focus on one thing, there were too many distractions.

  12. I’d be terrified if he gave himself a good grade. This level of accountability gives me real hope for the future. They know things need to change.

  13. I love this man. Gives himself an F after a winning season that presented a bunch of challenges that can’t really be planned for.

  14. Brad and Dan need to spend the off season shoring up the O-line and the D-line. Make some good draft picks and maybe catch a couple of good trades as well. Let’s Go Lions!

  15. 6 years ago I’d have killed for 9-8. Expectations are different now obviously with a loaded roster but it could be wayyy worse. I love Dans accountability.

  16. We haven’t had four straight winning seasons (heck, even four straight .500 or better seasons) since 1950-1954.

That along says a lot when we feel like we had missed opportunities but were still over .500 for the season. Every other time in my lifetime I’ve felt this way after a season, it was us going 6-10 and saying, “if only for these few bounces/calls that should have gone our way…”

Even though its a cliche, its still true: its tough to win in professional sports, and now that the standard is set at playoffs as the minimum for success, that alone is a major accomplishment. I’d rather finish out the decade like this than go back to we were before.

    Onward and upward, fellas.

  17. The team still had a winning record with Beavis and Butthead as the two coordinators. Honestly not bad

  18. I mean, I would say C. Dude had to take over playcalling, breaking in two coordinators, broken O and D lines, a nuked DB room, and various other drama, and they still finished above .500. That’s the mark of a *great* Head Coach because it’s a testament to everything they built.

The issues are fixable, but there needs to be some changes. But In MCDC We Trust.

  19. We are 1 catch away from the playoffs, and 1 non catch away from the nfc north championship. I love his accountability and hunger. I love that we have our guy

  20. Fire Morton or demote him and find a quality offensive coordianator, then all will be forgiven. Don’t hire retread head coaches to ruin your offense. I have seen this name on the board before, and his pedigree intrigues me. His name is Nate Scheelhaase and he is the passing game coordianator for the Rams. Scheelhaase gives me Ben Johnson vibes, and the McVay coaching tree is a good one to prune from.

  21. I just wanna know why they come out in the third quarter and always look like shit

  22. The analysis of this season is simple: Ben Johnson is a bad motherfucker. That said, this is the guy who put him on. Lions can rekindle the fire, with some slight retooling and better OC.

  23. This is why you need to hire the right coordinators. Dan is a great coach but this season wasn’t it.

  24. Great leader. Great coach. My analogy is to the 49ers. They had a three year run, made the Super Bowl, then dropped like a stone last year due to injuries. Recovering from injuries, 12-5 and in the playoffs.

Our 2 year run was just as impressive as their three year run. And we had a worse injury year, but didn’t drop as much. Keep the core together, get healthy, focus draft and trades on both lines, and we are good to go.

NOTE: Not sure what’s going on with Amik. But if he’s gone, get another CB. Although with Terrion, Reed, Ya-Sin and the others, we are pretty OK there.

  25. Good on Dan

Hopefully he fixes things up during the off-season to be ready to bite kneecaps next year

  26. Too much going for it on 4th down without an offensive line that can give Goff enough time to actually make a good throw. Could’ve won a few more games just by taking field goals but we didn’t adjust to the reality of this year’s team.

  27. Obviously adjustments need to be made and I respect DC for taking accountability. His biggest error on the season was hiring John Morton.

I would say Brad likely has more to prove this off-season than anyone. There are glaring holes in the roster that need addressing. Many players will be leaving in FA that need to be replaced. Our last 2 drafts have yielded little and most of the project players that cost multiple picks either haven’t been used/got injured/released from the team entirely.

We absolutely need a competent OC to reinvegerate the offense, but it will be interesting seeing the moves (or lack thereof) this off season. If we enter next season with the same caliber of talent in the trenches on both sides, it won’t make any difference.

  28. Don’t get me wrong, I love grit and biting kneecaps. But next year from the coaching staff I want adaptation. If your oline is looking shaky 1 quarter into the game quit trying to be the tough physical team

  29. That mindset is why im glad hes coach. Hed torch himself before he shat on his guys. Atleast to the media.
