SHOULD Carter Bryant be in Austin!?

Spurs rookie Carter Bryant has been stuck on the San Antonio bench, would a G League assignment to the Austin Spurs be better for his development?
In this video, I’ll break down: Carter Bryant’s rookie season so far — limited minutes and struggles adapting to the NBA. More playing time in the G League could help his confidence, decision-making, and skill growth.

  1. He definitely needs to go play in Austin. He’s not ready for the big stage yet. He can’t make a dunk is pretty wild. He probably gets nervous and loses his mechanics. Jumping way too far away or off the wrong foot. A simply layup or simple 2 handed dunk would work. He needs playing time and a lot of it. He needs to play in Austin this year

  3. Those calling him a bust need look no further than Sidy Cissoko who has carved out a real role in Portland and is now a part of their longterm plans.

Sidy also looked like he didn't belong on an NBA court and his stats are so-so, but there's no denying his length and athleticism, something Carter Bryant has even more than Cissoko.

  4. Carter needs to get serious playing time to improve his game on both ends and Austin is the best option. Spurs need players that can put the ball in the basket and that is DJG and Mangus. Send Waters to Austin also

  5. Yeah I think a couple games in Austin would help. It’s different though because we’re so deep and a major target for the rest of the league, so it’s not like a slight or anything. He can have a 20-30 pt game with some big defensive plays and build up some confidence. 🍻

  6. Someone on the NBASpurs subreddit said something that rings true though. The G league doesn't really feel like a development league in the past 5 or so seasons. It feels like it's become more of a group of poor defenders with iso-only offense trying to show off their individual skills. It has been sliding for a while but has really been hobbled by NIL and other global league trends. So it seems sending someone to G league isn't really as much of an option for development anymore, as they won't be playing against even fringe level NBA talent, so they can't actually hone their skills to that level.

Idk how much of that is true, but it does explain why it isn't being tried (yet) with him, as he has been quite bad offensively. I want to see him pick it up but he was always a project and wasn't supposed to be a plus contributor in his first year anyways.

  7. Great Stream TSR🩶..I agree with you on Carter and hate to go here but when the Spurs were on deck in Vegas supporting Summer league squad.Sochan with his 👠 wasn't a good look.Just my opinion

  8. …no i don't think he should go to the g league… he's getting experience by just watching real NBA game's…let him make mistakes in real game's that's how you learn…like tony parker and manu…i don't think lottery players should be in the g league…im good with him getting 5-7 mpg and getting experience by watching real NBA games…

  9. I don't care what we do with Carter for now just don't get rid of him continue to develop him! We need more solid young players like him for multiple playoff runs in the future.

  10. Yes he should be in the G league he's way too raw he looks awful out there keeps missing everything easy layups and dunks then next season see where he's at in his development and go from there if he never pans out then I wouldn't be surprise because it seems like Brian Wright can't draft outside the top 4 but Bryant can still develop and hopefully has a future with us

  11. Prior to the draft, Carter was seen as a very raw player but with a very good upside, a multi-year project. Even in NCAA, his playing time was very limited. His current performances are not a surprise at all. He is very good defensively in his appearances in NBA but without any offense (Offensively Spurs are playing 4 versus 5 when he is on court).
I think that young players should play and Austin could offer him at least 20/30 minutes per game to develop his offensive skills. Playing there for a month (such as Tidjane Salaün in november) should be surely very beneficial for him.
Garcia could make the opposite move to get more minutes in NBA for a month. The Spurs could then decide to sign him or not with a garanteed contract after this period.

  12. If the Spurs really trade Sochan I do not get the strategy of giving him no minutes and lower his value before a trade. He played well in the last couple of years – and now he is unplayable?

  13. Our Spurs are already outperforming most of our expectations this year. With that in mind, player development is best left to the professionals in the organization; not amateurs/fans like us.

  14. A strong argument could have been made that he should have been in Austin some time ago. Now, the picture is not as clear. Carter may be able to get more minutes if Sochan leaves, but that also depends on who SA brings in. I’d wait for the dust to settle before making a decision.

  15. The frustration about power forwards Sochan and Carter Bryant are in stark contrast to a Youtube video today by Hoops Reference about "Sneaky Home RUN Signings" this year. That video talks up Mamu and Dominick Barlow as diamonds in the rough. In another Youtube video by NBA INSIDE, Maxime Reynaud, one of your early draft favorites that the Spurs passed on, Rich, is touted as one of ten rookies who are already too good.

  16. Carter and Sochan should be getting healthy minutes in Austin. Both can practice their 3 pointer. Sochan can practice not hesitating his layup or dunks. Carter can practice dunking the ball or a simple layup.

  17. He's young and sometimes players start out slow adapting to NBA physicality and roles they're expected to fill. He needs to be on the court learning even if its only for 5 minutes at a time if we expect him to find his footing. I say this loosely with hopes that he can make a leap towards proving himself by the trade deadline. If no improvement by then we move him to Austin. GoSpursGo

  18. I don't disagree with anything you said, but we also have to remember that we've been really lucky with our top draft picks lately. They've all come out on fire, so when you compare Bryant to those other top picks, it shouldn't be a huge surprise that he is having a slow start. I think he comes in with a lot of energy, but he needs to tone down that energy on the offensive side of the ball and make smarter decisions. Bryant is needed to apply pressure late in games when the other team is gassed, but yeah, he needs to show more offensive value to keep his minutes.

  19. YES, BUT…. Sure, I wish he had been playing Austin G-League all this time; if he had, he might be ready for S.A. minutes against lesser opponents now. But, there's a part of me that just loves seeing him explode into the air only to lose the ball, or go flying over his matchup… the incredible potential / athleticism with zero control makes me smile (something between Will Smith in Hancock, and the "Greatest American Hero" early episodes). 😋
