  3. Incredibly smart guy in general. Originally was going to go to Yale but switched to Cal and graduated in 3 years. He also interned at investment firms while at Cal. Smart guy who got to continue his football dream but had backup plans in place. I like him.

  13. All these people worried about the last time we picked a QB #1 should be required to watch his entire interview. He may not pan out as a franchise QB (no guarantees in life but death and taxes) but it won’t be for a lack of trying, unlike the previous #1 pick…

  18. Do not make the same mistake the Colts did: address and solve the Offensive Line issues elaborately as soon as possible after you draft this guy. Years of significant investment need to go into protecting Mendoza right from the start.

    That doesn’t only mean get good starters – you need to get high-quality depth. Really solve the problem thoroughly. The Patriots kept drafting Offensive Linemen while they won Super Bowls and the OL kept Brady clean.

    Be aware that you’re dealing with another hyper-smart person. If that Offensive Line doesn’t constantly stay good and reliable they’ll choose to retire before the game retires them.

    If you want to see a great video of how much tape he watches and how well he knows how to read defenses, watch this interview towards the last few minutes around the 51:00 mark on. Talks about Tom Brady and Peyton Manning being prepared mentally in terms of Football IQ.

    Also talks earlier about reading defenses and how much teams try to constantly disguise what they’re doing so he is constantly processing what the defense is trying to do pre-snap.

    Mind you this was before his first full season at Cal as a starter.

    This guy might really be a Football savant. Also a lot more funny than I thought.
